Christmas is Christ’s Mass
In the spirit of Christmas, we pause and ask, “What is the connection between Christmas and the Holy
Mass (which has been our topic since we started this column)?”
Christmas is a compound word of two English words: Christ’s Mass. And what do we celebrate in
the Holy Mass? Christ’s Paschal Mystery. The term “Paschal” derives from the Hebrew Pesach which
means “the passing over.” It is applied to the three essentially related events: the Passover meal, the annual
feast of the Passover, and the historical Passover of deliverance of the Israelites from death. Before the
Israelites left Egypt, the Lord had prescribed the Passover meal (Ex 12:1-20), establishing it as an annual
“memorial feast” (cf. Ex 12:14) to commemorate God’s “passing over” the houses of the Israelites whose
doorposts and lintel were smeared with the blood of the sacrificed lamb which saved them from death.
In the New Testament, Jesus fulfilled the Jewish “memorial feast” (cf. Ex 12:14) at the Last Supper in
which he commanded his disciples to “do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19). Christ himself is the Paschal
Lamb, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn 1:29). “For our paschal lamb, Christ, has
been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast” (1 Cor 5:7-8). For us Christians, the Jewish celebration
of “the LORD’s Passover” (Ex 12:11) prefigures our celebration of “the Lord’s Supper” (1 Cor 11:20), the
oldest name for the Holy Mass.
The Hebrew Pesach was translated into Greek and Latin as Pascha and Spanish Pascua which is the
origin of the Filipino Pasko. Interestingly, Filipinos refer to Christmas as Pasko ng Pagsilang and Easter as
Pasko ng Pagkabuhay. This is significant because the Paschal Mystery, which is the theological content of
the Holy Mass, is already prefigured at the birth of Jesus. His rejection (“there was no room for them in the
inn”) already points to his Death and his birth to his Resurrection. The Holy Mass or Holy Communion is
already foreshadowed by the location of his birth. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which means “house of
bread”. The Virgin Mary “wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger” (Lk 2:7). A manger is
a feeder usually of wood construction used to hold food for animals.
Christ continues to give us his Body and Blood at our celebration of the Holy Mass, which consists of
two major parts, namely, “the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, these being so closely
interconnected that they form but one single act of worship. For in the Mass is spread the table both of God’s
Word and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be instructed and refreshed” (General
Instruction on the Roman Missal 28). Merry Christ’s Mass!

There was this story years ago in a small midwestern town about one man’s job was to watch the railroad crossing. When a train would approach at night
he was to wave a lantern to warn those driving on
the narrow road that a train was approaching and to
stop until it passed by.
One particular night the train was coming down the
tracks as usual and the man took his place to warn
any oncoming cars. He could see a car in the distance approaching the railroad tracks so he began
to wave his lantern in the moonlit sky. The car continued to come so the man waved the lantern even
more briskly. The train was only seconds away from
the crossing. The car was not even slowing down.
The man could not believe it so he waved the
lantern even harder. Still the car came. The car was
almost to the track and the train was about to pass. Again he frantically waved his lantern and the
car continued to come at full speed. Finally the man jumped out of the way as the car sped by and
was hit by the train on the tracks. Everyone in the car was killed.
At the investigation the grief-stricken man explained to the authorities how he tried to warn the
oncoming car but it would not stop. The officer in charge said to the man at the crossing, “Sir, you
waved your lantern, but you forgot to light it.”
God called us to be the lights to the world. As Christians it is our mission to take the Gospel to
everyone we can. But it does not good to tell people about Jesus if the light within us is not shining.
Without the light of Christ, we will have little impact.
The Light of the World - Jesus - will celebrate his birthday, what is the best gift
you can give to him?

We need to give thanks to
God for the role we play in His
plan for the world. God has a
plan for the salvation of the
world, which works out in various generations over the centuries. Throughout
today’s’ readings, we see Nathan, Paul , Elizabeth
and Mary responding to God’s call to them. We, too,
are called to participate in His plan. Let us be open
to God in our lives and give Him thanksgiving and
praise.
Daily Advent Prayer:
Father, all powerful and ever-living God,
we do well always and everywhere
to give you thanks
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
When he humbled himself to come among us,
he fulfilled the plan you formed long ago
and opened for us the way to salvation.
Now we watch for the day,
hoping that the salvation promised us will be ours
when Christ will come again in his glory.
And so, with all the choirs of angels in heaven
we proclaim your glory
and join in their unending hymn of praise:

Help Those In Need
During the Season of Advent, we as Christians
are asked to help those who are less fortunate
than ourselves. During Advent we will be collecting items for the homeless, and those in
need of assistance for Christmas.
Many homeless people and needy families in
the area come to the rectory for temporary
help. The items most needed to assist them
are: gift cards for gasoline, grocery stores, and
fast food restaurants. Dry food goods may be
dropped in the containers outside the entries of
the Church.

Santa’s helper: When your child is with
Santa’s helper, consider encouraging him
or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the
floor between his feet rather than sitting
on his lap. Let your child know that it’s
okay to tell Santa what he or she wants
for Christmas but that he or she should
also tell mom and dad because they are
also Santa’s helpers… Secret surprises
are special but no adult should ask a child
to keep secrets from the child’s parents.
Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or

Christmas celebrates the birth of mankind’s one and only hope for future happiness. He is called,
“Wonderful, the Prince of Peace, the Mighty Father. The entire audience stood to sing “Alleluia” to this
Child born in poverty–but born to save all mankind. Spending eternity with this Child is our ultimate
goal–yours and mine. This will be the complete fulfillment of our life. We are called to spread the good
news, the gospel, day in and day out. When the Christmas Child grew up He told His disciples, “Go
and teach.” We are those disciples, and those are our marching orders. So let’s do it.

in downtown LA promoting the beauty and dignity of
every human life from conception to natural death. Beginning at 10:00 at La
Placita Olvera, we will walk through LA ending in Grand Park with a familyfriendly picnic with music, entertainment, speakers, food trucks, and exhibits
from local organizations serving those in need. Book parish buses now!

OneLife LA invites all people to join us in declaring a commitment to valuing and protecting all

The event will begin with a walk up Temple Street, across Grand Avenue and down 1st Street, culminating in a family-friendly picnic in Grand Park with music, entertainment, food trucks, and
exhibits from community organizations.

privileged people coming to our church. Suggested
foods to be placed in a clear plastic bags are sandwiches, cookies, fruits and soda or water.
