Then it can snow and get cold, just in time for Santa to come! We all know how that works in Nebraska tho! Speaking of Santa - It’s that time of year when all the girls and boys write letters to Santa telling them their wants and needs! You may have found a letter in your mailbox from me! It’s the end of the year and I have sent out our annual membership letters, letting you know the benefits of being a chamber member. Please join us Friday, December 5th at the Municipal Building at 5:30 for “After Hours” hosted by the Schuyler Chamber of Commerce, the City of Schuyler and SCD. Our annual Parade of Trees will be on display for all to enjoy! A $1 admission fee and $1 raffle ticket purchase will be collected at the door. Your raffle ticket is for our Wreath of Gifts which will be drawn for on Saturday, December 6th. The Parade of Trees will be open from 10-1 on Saturday for all to see! The children may visit with Santa on Saturday also, from 101, at the Colfax Theatre. Santa will be arriving on the Fire Truck and will listen to the children one by one on the stage. A movie will be shown on the screen while they wait. We hope to see everyone there! Thank you to those who are contributing to our Parade of Trees & to those who have donated to the Wreath of Gifts! Focusing on Retention Expansion - Recruitment, the Schuyler Community Development (SCD) is committed to supporting the expansion and development of Schuyler’s capacity to compete successfully for new opportunities by expanding its housing supply, strengthening its collaborative partnerships, growing the local tax base and enhancing Schuyler's quality of place. Formed in 1985, the Schuyler Community Development is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and is comprised of twelve volunteer Directors and two fulltime employees – an Eco- nomic Development Coordinator and a Community Housing Specialist. In partnership with the City of Schuyler, the SCD functions in an advisory role to the City Council on matters pertaining to economic and community development. SCD has no governing authority. Funding for the SCD provided by voter approval in 2007 and again in 2011 via the Schuyler Economic Development Plan (SEDPlan). PAGE 2 DECEMBER NEWSLETTER Schuyler Chamber of Commerce & Schuyler Community Schools Foundation OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD The Schuyler Area Outstanding Teacher and Para-Educator Awards are designed to recognize the efforts of all Teachers and Para-educators and to honor those educators who have made significant contributions to the Schuyler area school education systems. These include any Teachers or Para-educators in the following schools: Schuyler Central High School, Schuyler Elementary and Middle School, Richland Elementary School, Rogers Elementary School, Fisher Elementary School, & Schuyler Preschool. The Chamber with the School Foundation will honor three teachers and three Para-educators throughout the year. This year nominations will be received during the first 3 quarters of school. After each quarter is completed one Teacher and one Para-educator will be recognized for their hard work. After the third quarter Teacher and Para-educator is chosen, the Chamber and the Foundation will then pick one of the three to be the Educator of the Year. The Foundation will award $250 in Chamber Bucks to be awarded to the one Teacher and to the one Para year. The hopes of both organizations are that everyone will take the time to nominate that special educator that is deserving of being recognized and rewarded for their hard work. Anyone (students, parents, fellow teachers, administrators, school board, etc.) is welcome to nominate a Teacher or Para-educator for this award. The nominee should be someone that you feel has made an outstanding contribution to education. Please complete this form and compose a letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation could include items about the nominee such as schools attended, degrees, family life, and extra-curricular and community activities. The letter should include what they teach and why you feel they are deserving of this award. Please return by December 19, 2014. ISSUE 59 PAGE 3 Keep Schuyler Beautiful RECYCLINGNEWSBITS Holiday Recycling Hours The Colfax County Recycling Facility will be closed on Wednesday, December 24th and Thursday, December 25th for Christmas, but will be open on Saturday, December 27th to recycle all your holiday trimmings. The facility will also be closed on Thursday, January 1st. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s household waste increases by more than 25% which adds up to an additional 1 million tons a week to our landfills. Bring that additional 25% to the recycling facility. We can recycle your boxes and wrapping paper, except for foil wrapping. Please also remember to remove the bows and ribbons which cannot be recycled. The Colfax County Recycling Facility is open Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. America Recycles Day Winners Keep Schuyler Beautiful and the Colfax County Recycling Facility celebrated America Recycles Day with a drawing for three sets of 3 stackable recycling containers. Winners were Jaidy Lopez, Renee Brabec and Annette Pycha. Promotional items were also given away on Saturday, November 15th.
