Wish Upon a Wedding offers couples
in need the wedding of their dreams
F
or most couples, the cold October rain would have been a deterrent for an
outdoor wedding ceremony, but Lindsay and Johann were committed to
exchanging vows on a wide-open expanse of family land in Jamaica, Vermont no matter what the weather. In fact, they had been looking forward
to being married amongst family and friends in this setting for months,
however Lindsay’s battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) continued to make planning a wedding an insurmountable challenge. It was
by mere coincidence that, only five weeks before their planned wedding
date, Johann learned about Wish Upon a Wedding, a nonprofit organization that provides
weddings to couples facing a serious or terminal illness. Once Johann applied for a Wedding Wish, a team of volunteers, called Wish Granters, from the Vermont wedding industry
sprung into action to create a unique and personal wedding for Lindsay and Johann, including a ceremony on their cherished family land.
For Lindsay and Johann, and for more than 60 other couples across the United States,
Wish Upon a Wedding has activated its strong network of volunteers to gift an entire wedding for up to 50 guests, including everything from a professional wedding planner and photographer to food, music and a wedding gown for the bride. “I never thought I would be able
to have a real wedding dress, let alone a dream dress from Nicole Miller,” remarked Lindsay.
“Brides like Lindsay, after being diagnosed with a devastating terminal illness, begin to
think that they cannot have the magical wedding they’ve always dreamed of,” says National
President Alison Phillips. “It is our mission to bring the joyful experience of having a wedding and marrying a great love within arm’s reach.”
Wish Upon a Wedding was founded in 2010 in San Jose, California by wedding planner
Liz Guthrie, who now serves as the Executive Director of the organization. There are 13 local
chapter hubs around the country, however the charity grants wishes in all 50 states, regardless
of whether or not there is a chapter hub nearby. “Our well-connected and dedicated local
and national board members are able to link Wish applicants with Wish Granters in every
state across the country so that we can help couples everywhere have a dream wedding,” says
Guthrie. The New York chapter facilitated the Wish for Lindsay and Johann in Vermont as
well as another recent Wish for a New Hampshire couple in July 2013.
Along with granting Wedding Wishes, Wish Upon a Wedding on occasion grants Vow
Renewal Wishes for couples facing extreme medical circumstances. Sarah and Colin of
Portsmouth, New Hampshire were planning to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary
with their families and two young children when they learned about Wish Upon a Wedding.
Sarah had been fighting stage IV breast cancer for more than 3 years and news of extensive
spreading to her spine and brain gave her and Colin motivation to create a special, joyful day
to celebrate their love and their family. Wentworth by the Sea Country Club hosted the vow
renewal and many New Hampshire and Massachusetts-based wedding vendors contributed
their services.
“Planning this vow renewal for a kind and beautiful family going through a terribly difficult time was a life-changing experience,” says Boston-based wedding planner Tammy
Golson. “I gained great perspective on the value of celebrating life’s most important moments
with those you love.”

In addition to Classic Wishes for up to 50 guests like those granted for Lindsay and
Johann and Sarah and Colin, Wish Upon a Wedding also grants Urgent Wishes for those
applicants who are imminently ill. Urgent Wishes can take place in a hospital, hospice or
private home for a small number of guests.
“Our goal is to reach as many couples as we can in any way we can,” says Phillips. “Wish
Upon a Wedding can be a great resource for hospitals and hospices as well as other nonprofits
looking to provide support and services to people with serious medical challenges.”
More information, volunteer opportunities and Wish applications for couples in need can
be found at www.WishUponAWedding.org. Wish Upon a Wedding is a national 501(c)3
organization and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, disability or
sexual orientation. Applicants must be 18 years of age and US Citizens in order to qualify
for a Wish.

or brides who aren’t tied to tradition, designers are offering their gowns in
a range of pink hues, from the palest pastel to the boldest magenta. Think a
pink wedding gown is, well, shocking? Celebrity brides have been selecting
the girly shade for their wedding dresses for years. John Galliano created a
custom Dior ombre gown for Gwen Stefani in 2005. Reese Witherspoon
picked out a Monique Lhuillier strapless, pale pink A-line gown for her
second wedding to agent Jim Toth in 2011, and Jessica Biel wore a pink floral ball gown
by Giambattista Valli for her 2012 wedding to Justin Timberlake.
Brides who want more than just a pop of color for their wedding-day look won’t have
trouble finding the right shade for their skin tone and silhouette to flatter their figure.
For example, to complement a romantic or vintage wedding, try on gowns in soft blushes
and peaches made from layers of tulle and adorned with a sprinkle of sparkly crystals.
Fashion-forward brides, like newlywed Kaley Cuoco who said “I do” on New Year’s
Eve 2013 in a petal pink ball gown by Vera Wang, can opt for something more daring in
a dark coral or fuchsia shade, which is sure to make a grand statement.
Here are some of my favorite pink-hued gowns hitting bridal salons this spring!

How to create a stylish and functional wedding website for your big day
L

Avoid creating a virtual ‘guestbook,’ because your guests are
more likely to wish you well on your Facebook page than on
your wedding website.
A blog format can be a great way for an engaged couple
to record their experiences for friends and family, as well as
themselves in the future, but there’s nothing sadder than a
blog with one entry. If you can’t commit to it, then don’t
bother starting one.
ong gone are the days when you needed to call
or email all of your wedding guests with the
exciting news of your engagement. Today’s
brides and grooms can create a wedding website, also known as a wedsite, which includes
all the important information friends and
family need to know, such as the date, venue and where you’re
registered for gifts.
There are dozens of wedding website programs – with
costs ranging from free to a few hundred dollars – couples
can use to create a stylish wedsite filled with all the pertinent
information related to the big day. Follow these expert tips
from two of the industry’s most well-known wedsite creators
to design the ultimate site for your wedding:
TECH TIPS by Squarespace’s

Do a bit of shopping around and make sure to read the
fine print, especially when a website platform is described as
“free” since the free version might not be able to do or look
like what you actually want.
Look for a company that offers a mobile version or responsive design, because the site should load quickly and be easy

appreciate having the information at their fingertips, and it’s also a fun way for them to learn
more about you as a couple and what you enjoy doing.
Avoid information overload by sharing only the most important details, such as transportation and accommodation options. If you include too much information, the critical details
may get lost, so scan through your content and decide what is critical and what can be eliminated. Try to keep your primary navigation to five pages maximum.
Don’t be afraid to resize the images your photographer sends you. The dimensions you

Apple’s Preview application to crop and resize each of the images you are planning to upload.
Remember that your website is one of the few details your guests get to see before the wedding, so have fun with it! Let your personalities shine through by including silly photos of the

Go
Green!
How to have an eco-chic
wedding on any budget
Long gone are the days when a green wedding meant that
a bride wore a hemp wedding dress and the invitation suite
was made from recycled paper. Today, couples can decrease
their carbon footprint in a variety of creative, and even stylish,
ways. We asked Kate Harrison, Editor of The Green Bride
Guide, to share her top ten tips on how couples can plan an
eco-friendly wedding without sacrificing style. Here’s what
she had to say:
Eco-Invites
Invitations are one of the easiest wedding details to green,
and include 100% digital designs as well as eco-couture letterpress designs on recycled industrial cotton paper. Have
your guests RSVP online to save the printing and the postage of reply cards.
Location, Location, Location
By selecting a venue that is central to the majority of
your guests you can significantly decrease the environmental footprint of your wedding. If the reception site is already
committed to going green (e.g. they offer local, seasonal or
organic food or flowers) even better!
The Gown
There are many designers who offer wedding gowns made
from eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton or peace
silk. If you can’t find a new “green” gown, opt for a “nearly”
new one at a bridal consignment store. Online retailer
NearlyNewlywed.com sells used designer gowns and sample
Page 14 | Lakes Region Weddings | Laconiadailysun.com
Bridal Beauty
Despite their eco-looking packaging, even mineral makeups can contain toxic chemicals. Look at the Environmental
Working Group’s Skin Deep Database to find options that
are safe for both you and the environment.
Beautiful Blooms
Since most flowers, especially roses, are grown overseas,
they are covered in chemical pesticides and fertilizers. (Some
even have chemical scents!) Work with your florist to use
local, seasonal and organic blooms, and avoid the cost and
carbon footprint of shipping your wedding flowers in from
abroad.
dresses in excellent condition at a fraction of the retail price.
A once-worn gown or a sample is eco-friendly due to the
fact that nothing new has to be created. After your wedding, consider donating your gown to Brides Against Breast
Cancer.
Wedding Rings
Vintage rings are always eco-friendly, as are ones made
from recycled metals. Canadian Diamonds and certified
conflict-free gemstones are other good options for your
engagement ring and wedding bands.
Food Glorious Food
Work with your caterer to create a local, seasonal and delicious meal for your reception. Ask potential vendors where
they source their produce and meat from to ensure they are
purchased from local farms. If you get push back from your
folks who may be nervous about an eco-menu, remind them
that local food is fresher and tastes better too.
Fabulous Favors
Send your guests home with an eco-wedding favor to
remember your big day. Great choices include seeds, locally
made sweets or a donation to a charity close to your heart.

working with photographers for your wedding, and you’re
sure to find your perfect match!
SHOOTING STYLE GUIDE
Before you start meeting with prospective photographers
browse online portfolios and galleries of real weddings, and
take note of the images that draw you in. Do the traditional, straight-on photos grab your attention, or do you
find yourself pinning the more creative photographs with
interesting backdrops and angles? Once you have a general
sense of the style you want, make appointments with photographers whose work is similar.
VIEW MORE THAN A GREATEST HITS ALBUM
At your first meeting, make sure you view a complete
wedding album, which includes images of the couple getting ready, formal portraits, the ceremony and reception.
You want to know that the photographer can consistently
capture special moments and wedding-day details beautifully. You should also ask to see photos taken at a similar

DRAW UP A LIMITED SHOT LIST
Trust your wedding photographer to capture the special
moments of your big day. With years of experience, he or
she is sure to know where to be and when so nothing is
missed. If you’re nervous that an important picture will
be forgotten, draft a short list of the must-take formal portraits, including the names of key relatives, and other photographs that you definitely want for your wedding album.

wedding venue, so if you are getting married indoors make
sure you review wedding photos taken in ballrooms, restaurants, catering halls and other interior shots.
SCHEDULE AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION
Plan to take romantic and fun engagement photos soon
after hiring a photographer to get comfortable both in front
of the camera and with the vendor. The photos you take can

enough time on the day of your wedding to take all the
photographs you hope to capture. Scout out the venue and
grounds of where you are getting ready as well as your ceremony and reception sites in advance so you can find the
best places for bridal party and family portraits and won’t
waste time looking for them on the big day.
CONSIDER A FIRST LOOK
While it’s a tradition that the groom does not see his
bride before the ceremony, you may want to schedule a “first

look” before the vows where the photographer can capture this very special and romantic
moment between the two of you. You’ll be able to take a number of your formal portraits
before the ceremony, allowing you more time to celebrate with friends and family at the
reception.
BLACK & WHITE VS COLOR
Since your photographer will most likely be shooting your wedding with a digital
camera, images can be easily changed from color to black and white, but not every photograph will translate visually from one format to the other. Let your photographer know
your color preference so he or she can guarantee the lighting and camera settings will
capture the image in the best way.

What would Emily Post say?
The answers to some of the most common wedding predicaments
Can you cut costs by having a cash bar? Do you have to invite
the future in-laws to join the bridal party? Should you expect
wedding gifts up to a year after you say “I do?” These are just a
few of the sticky situations brides and grooms find themselves
in throughout their engagement, and for decades couples have
turned to Emily Post for the answers.
To help modern couples with all of their pressing etiquette
dilemmas, The Emily Post Institute recently released Emily
Post’s Wedding Etiquette, 6th Edition. Written by Emily’s
great-great-granddaughters, etiquette experts Anna Post and
Lizzie Post, the book provides brides, grooms, moms and other
member of the wedding, with everything they need to know
from the timeless wedding traditions to modern issues couples
are facing.
Below are a few of the frequently asked wedding etiquette
questions, and the 21st-century solutions, excerpted from Emily
Post’s Wedding Etiquette, 6th Edition, to help ease some of the
stress of wedding planning.
Should I ask My Fiancé’s Sister to be My Bridesmaid?
Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, 6th Edition,
(William Morrow; on-sale Jan. 7. 2014; ISBN: 9780062326102;
$29.99), available wherever books are sold.
Q: My fiancé has a sister whom I don’t know well. Do I have
to ask her to be one of my bridesmaids?
A: If you are considering skipping your future sister-in-law as
a bridesmaid purely because you don’t feel close to her, recon-
sider. She is about to become part of your family, and you of
hers. Your invitation to be a member of the bridal party may
open the door to a closer relationship.
Your future in-laws would likely welcome such an inclusive
gesture toward their daughter. While you are not obligated to
include her, the long-term benefits to family harmony may
outweigh the potential harm and hurt feelings you might
cause by not asking. Plus it’s a chance to get to know her
better before the wedding.
Q: My wife and I have been married for three months. A
handful of guests, mostly my friends, have not given us gifts
yet. Is it still the case that you have one year to give a gift? If
we do not receive a gift, what is a proper way to remind them?
A: There is a world of difference between what a guest
should do and what you are owed (or can “remind” about).
While it’s customary for a wedding guest to give a gift to
the bride and groom, the couple shouldn’t view the custom
as an entitlement. (Incidentally, the one-year time frame has
always been a loose myth. Ideally, a gift is sent sometime
close to the date of the wedding.)
The answer: Be kind. Be patient. Give the benefit of the
doubt. If a gift never arrives, let it go. It’s far better to focus

The Gift of Friendship
on appreciating the gifts you did receive than to head down the awkward path of confronting guests who didn’t pony up. You’ll only end up embarrassing and shaming those
guests rather than engendering feelings of generosity and affection. To stay mad about
not receiving a gift suggests you care more about the gift than the friend. Chalk it up to
their forgetfulness, cluelessness, or hard times. Friendships are fundamentally based on
much more than gifts.
Are Cash Bars Acceptable?
Q: My fiancé really wants to serve alcohol at our wedding reception, but it would put a
big crimp on our budget. Someone suggested a cash bar. What are your thoughts?
A: You wouldn’t think of asking someone to pay for a cocktail in your home, so don’t
have a cash bar at your reception. When you invite guests to your reception, they are just
that—your guests. If a full bar is not in your budget, serve soft drinks, a signature cocktail,
wine, beer, or just Champagne for toasting instead. Perhaps you’ll cut back on the size of
your guest list and serve a full array of drinks. Just don’t let a hotel, club, or reception-site
manager talk you into selling tickets for drinks or having guests pay their way!
Can I See My Fiancé Before the Wedding on the Big Day?
Q: My mother insists that I not see my husband-to-be on the day of the wedding until
the ceremony. Is this still customary in today’s weddings?
A: Most couples today disregard the old superstition of the bridegroom not seeing his
bride before the ceremony on their wedding day. The custom stems from the days when
marriages were arranged and the groom might never have seen the bride. There was the
chance that he might take one look at her and bolt—so it was often safer for them to meet
for the first time at the altar!
This custom certainly doesn’t need to be followed these days unless it’s something you
both feel strongly about. It’s also fallen victim to practicality. To avoid leaving guests in
limbo while posed wedding pictures of the couple, attendants, and family members are
being taken before or during the reception, many couples schedule this photo session a
few hours before the ceremony. It’s also an opportunity to get a really great “first look”
photo, when the groom first sees his bride in all her glory.

our invitation is the
first glimpse your
guests will have
into your wedding,
and is an important
indicator as to what
the ceremony and
reception will entail. When selecting
yours, pick a style that reflects both
the theme and color palette.
As long as the key details are listed
-- the who, what, when and where -you can have fun personalizing your
stationery suite, including the design
and copy of the invitation, and enclosure cards.
We’ve assorted some of the biggest
and most versatile trends for 2014 to
help guide you through the process
of selecting an invitation design that
will best convey the look and feel of
your wedding.
Sparkle & Shine
Foil-pressed or pearlescent paper
adds just enough glitz and glamour to your invitations, while maintaining a polished look. There are
a myriad of metallic-accented wedding invite designs available today,
including Minted’s Foxtrot Frame by
Olivia Kanaley, Vera Wang Papers’
gold bordered design, and Wedding
Paper Divas’ Perfectly Lovely.
Bold & Painterly
Showcase your love, and love for
art, with a modern and casual suite.
Big Mod by Snow and Ivy, available
at Minted, makes a bold yet laidback statement.
Creative Copy
Invitations may get all the attention, but reply card sets, direction
and enclosure cards can be just as fun
to design! Instead of the traditional
accepts and regrets, include a blank
card with a reply date to encourage family and friends to write well
wishes to the happy couple. You can
also include unexpected, but entertaining, enclosures like the Play My
Jam or Words of Advice cards available at Wedding Paper Divas.

For an outdoor wedding, a fresh

the perfect way to help guests envision the setting for your ceremony

Playful Type
Don’t feel restricted by traditional
fonts and let your personalities shine
through by picking an unexpected
typeface for your invitation. There are
many options from calligraphed-style
scripts to embellished and whimsical
lettering, and even mix-and-match
options. Can’t visualize an invite
