It is a hard thing not to celebrate your enemy’s fall. With so many enemies around
us, Muslim terrorists, extreme right wing groups, hate groups of all kinds throughout the world, and so forth, when they fall – as they inevitably do – how can we not
rejoice? It is in that ques on and that answer that we find what Jews are made of.
We do not celebrate because celebra ng the death of even our enemies takes away
whatever remnants of humanity may s ll reside in us. Yes, during war we are called
to do terrible things, to defend ourselves, our families and our country, and it brings
out the very worse in us. Jews aren’t pacifists by any means. But neither are we
animals. The Torah contains rules of war and though some mes we do terrible things
to stay alive, our tradi on commands us to keep the small eternal light of humanity
burning in our hearts. It is easy to snuff it out. Too easy. But the Jew’s task is to keep
it burning, always.
The parallels with the Hannukah story are astounding. Maybe the rabbis were telling us that the light that was kept burning for eight days was really the small flame of
Jewish humanity that s ll survived a er years of a terrible war with great losses but,
ul mately, a Jewish victory. It was a light that would be used for the altar at the Temple from whence, our Sages tell us, peace between God and humanity and humanity
with others would happen. It is a flame that has survived for thousands of years and
will con nue to burn for thousands more.
There are plenty of others who have lost their humanity and they prove it every day.
Hannukah teaches us never to lose ours. Now that’s a Hannukah gi I can really
unwrap!

A Word from Michael Gross,
Our Temple President
This is my last column as President and I would like to thank
the Execu ve Board, the Board of Trustees, Commi ees, the
Rabbi, Cantor, Administrator and office staff. We have accomplished a lot since I became President in February.
We are pleased to announce that Shari Nigh ngale is our
new part- me Temple Administrator. Many of you know her since she has been our
Administra ve Assistant. We wish the best to Marje Richter, our former Administrator, and thank her for her many years of devoted service to the Temple. Transi ons
are always difficult, however, we are trying to make this one as smooth as possible.
Please be understanding and if you have any ques ons about this transi on, please
don’t hesitate to contact me.
The driveway has been completely repaved and because there was a drainage issue.
The contractor placed a patch in the driveway in the affected area so that water would
not pond.
We hired two new custodians and I hope that all of you have had a chance to meet
Shamar and Byron Campbell.
Thanks to Cantor Camhi, we have sold numerous copies of her Frozen Purim Spiel
and the proceeds will be divided between the Conn Music Fund and a fund to purchase new children’s prayer books.
Due to the un mely death of our accompanist, John Shaffer, we have a new
accompanist, Andy McDonough. I hope that all of you introduce yourselves to him
when you are at services.
We hope to have a balanced budget star ng in 2015 since we have made the
custodian and the administrator’s job part- me instead of full- me.
The Rabbi will hold a class to teach how to lead a Minyan at a Shiva. The class will
be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at noon. Please RSVP to the Temple since food
will be served. This is a mitzvah that is a real service to the mourners.
Lastly, I would like to wish all the best to our incoming President, Harry Silverman. I
am sure that he will do a great job as President.

Happy New Year!
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!
STARTING IN JANUARY, SHABBAT SERVICES
WILL BEGIN AT 7:30 PM WEEKLY.
The Religious Prac ces Commi ee and the Board of Trustees of Beth Miriam have
approved a change of Kabbalat Shabbat Friday night services to 7:30 PM beginning in
January, 2015. We will be announcing this at all events, in all E-lijahs, at services and
in the bulle n un l then. This will be a permanent me change to keep service mes
consistent throughout the year (with the excep on of the 6:30 July-August Shabbat
services). Please make a note of this me change.
Yahrzeits are a very special moment in the service especially for those who are remembering a deceased loved one. The Religious Prac ces Commi ee would like to
add even more meaning to this ritual.
When a name is read for the Yahrzeit, you may send us (tbmoffi[email protected])
a two sentence descrip on of the person you are remembering (eg. Joe Horowitz, a
wonderful father and avid Jets fan who loved his grandchildren so much and is fondly
remembered). If the descrip on is more than 2 sentences, the office will edit it down
to two sentences so as not to unduly lengthen the service.
You are also invited to bring a picture of a loved one on the night of the Yahrzeit with
a paragraph about the person and their rela onship to you, etc. Those pictures will
be put out in the foyer for that Friday night service.
Friday, January 9, 2015 at 7:30 PM
Join us at Shabbat services for the Board Installa on.
We hope to see you as we start the new year.

A Note from our Cantor
We have some exci ng musical opportuni es coming up at TBM! Our Youth Choir
started rehearsing last month for our Shabbat Hannukah Service on Friday, December
19 and our performance at the Congrega onal Mee ng on Sunday, December 14. If
your child in grades 3-12 is interested in par cipa ng, there is s ll me to join! There
are 2 rehearsals remaining on Sundays, December 7 and 14 immediately following
religious school. Please contact me to let me know your child will be par cipa ng and
send them with a light lunch (no pork or shellfish please).
Our "Frozen" Purim Spiel cas ng has begun! All the lead roles have been filled, but
there is s ll plenty of room in the chorus! We are looking for adults (members in good
standing) and religious school students in grades 2 and up! Rehearsals begin on Sunday, January 4 immediately following religious school. The Spiel will be performed on
Sunday, March 8.
Speaking of Purim, on Wednesday, March 4, we will be having a special Purim service
and song session. We are looking for parents and students to chant from Megillat Esther! I will provide a recording and the text for you to prac ce at home. Please email
me: [email protected] to par cipate in Youth Choir and/or the Frozen Purim
Spiel or Megillah reading.
Thank you!

Temple Beth Miriam’s New Administrator
I would like to introduce myself as your new temple administrator.
Many of you know me as the former administra ve assistant or as
your child’s religious school librarian. I am honored to announce
that I have accepted this important new role here at TBM.
My professional experience working in the Jewish community began at Temple Beth Miriam a few years ago, then at Jewish Federa on of Monmouth County, where I worked for a
year, before returning to the temple last year. I have learned a great deal about the needs
of the Jewish community at large, and specifically how I can help your congrega on grow.
I have witnessed first-hand how generous and vibrant you all are (from the smallest child
to the eldest members), how passionate Rabbi Cy and Cantor Marnie are about every
Shabbat and life cycle event, and how innova ve and crea ve Stella and her teachers are
in crea ng a dynamic religious school. Quite frankly, there is no place I’d rather work than
at TBM.
My goal is clear: I want to do whatever I can to make sure your needs are met, so that
you’re happy when you step out of my office or hang up the phone a er speaking to me.
I encourage you all to stop by and say hello any me. I am eager to hear your sugges ons
about how I can provide the best experience for you at the temple.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Michael Gross and Harry Silverman, and
all of the board members, for their confidence in me! I would also like to thank Marje
Richter for being my mentor and friend.
While I am sure we will have a few bumps in the road during this transi on, I am op mis c
that with everyone’s support, we will succeed in becoming the best we can be at Temple
Beth Miriam.

One of the great mitzvot is bringing
comfort to the mourner. One way we
do this is by bringing the temple to
them in mes of sorrow during shiva
for a loved one who has died. The
minyan is an important part of that
process and Beth Miriam needs more
minyan leaders.
Rabbi Stanway is happy to announce

lead a minyan. The training will take
place on Sunday, December 7th at

There is no charge.
Anyone who is Jewish and over the
age of bar or bat mitzvah can par cipate. Younger minyan leaders will

Mazel Tov to Olivia Gill as she becomes
Bat Mitzvah on December 13, 2014
My name is Olivia Gill, but I prefer to be called Liv. This year
I will be turning thirteen on my Bat Mitzvah date, 12-13-14.
My favorite things to do are play sports, read, direct music
videos, play with my dog and sister, and hang out with my
friends.
My volunteer project was based on making meals for the
parents staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Long
Branch. I took my friend and my mom to go and cook the
day a er Thanksgiving to make two nights' worth of food. The first night was Shakeand-Bake chicken with potatoes. The second night was chili with rice with side toppings. I really enjoyed this experience because I felt that I was taking some of the
things I own for granted, to see that these people needed others to help them cook
dinner. I have homemade meals, a shelter, and I’m not in the hospital, which was
more heartbreaking. This was a great life lesson to use what you have and don’t take
others for granted.
I’m excited to have my Bat Mitzvah coming up.
Thank you,
Liv
Thank you to TBM Sisterhood for a Successful Rummage Sale
Thank you to all our volunteers and donors. A special thank you to Rabbi Cy and temple

Some of you worked an hour or two and some came in over several days. If we missed
you in the lis ng please let us know.
We also want to thank those of you who “schlepped” extra tables, chairs and racks! Thank
you to Karen Hodes for the great signs and Andrea Phox for sisterhood e-mails and Valenna Li on for making up our street signs all over town. Thank you so much for making our

The Midnight Run
The Midnight Run is a social ac on based tradi on that SALTY
has been conduc ng nearly every year for the past decade.
On one cold winter night, typically in January, a group of teen
volunteers and several gracious chaperones from our temple
travel by bus into New York City, along with as much food and clothing as the bus can
fit. Once in the city, we begin to search for any of the many homeless of New York.
They are given whatever clothing they need to outlast the cold weather, along with a
sandwich and a bag of hygiene products. The amount of gra tude is truly heartwarming, and it is definitely a life-changing experience for anyone who a ends.
SALTY is happy to announce that the date for this year’s Midnight Run has already
been confirmed! It will be taking place on January 17. This Midnight Run is going to be
a li le different, though. We will be traveling with several other temple youth groups.
Hopefully, it will be a great bonding experience for all of the teens involved, although
this also means that there will be limited available transporta on. Thus, we ask that
any interested teenagers stay in touch with the youth group so that they are able to
sign up as soon as they can, seeing that we will be accep ng kids on a first come, first
served basis.
We would like to thank the Sisterhood for their generous dona ons, and would like
to ask for any lightly used coats, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, jeans, hats, gloves,
scarves, shoes and long underwear that the congrega on has to offer, along with hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, soap, and deodorant.
If you have any ques ons, or would like to know more about the Midnight Run, feel
free to contact Stella Stanway or me.

Volunteers Needed to Shop for Onegs
To Our TBM Family,
As many of you know, Frank re red this summer. He is a one-of-a-kind friend who will be greatly missed
by everyone in our TBM family.
The Sisterhood has set up a volunteer sign up for oneg shopping each week. This is NOT a request for
set up or break down of the oneg, just shopping for some food items and bringing them to the temple
prior to that week's service. Volunteers are only needed to shop for onegs that are not being sponsored
by a bar/bat mitzvah family, religious school class, or other special event. This should mean that each
temple family should only have to shop once every 2-3 years! A new list of dates, along with the guidelines below, will be posted every 3-4 months. Please go to this link to sign up for a week to volunteer:
h p://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0E4CACAC29A20-tbmoneg. (If the link does not work, please type
or copy this address into your web browser).
Items can be dropped off in the TBM kitchen on Wednesday 9-6, Thursday 9-4, or Friday 9-12. Please
use the labeled areas in the refrigerator, freezer, and on the counter for the purchased items. Although
we ask you to pick items from the list below, please feel free to put your own flair on the foods for that
week. You can get more items from any of the lists if you like, add an interes ng item not listed, or
maybe bring things made at home. Variety is always nice! No Shellfish or Pork Please.
List A - Pick at least 2: Berries, Pineapple, Grapes, or Melon
List B - Pick at least 2: Cookies, Brownies, Cupcakes, Other Small Por on Cakes
List C - Pick at least 1: Cheese and Crackers, Dips (Hummus, Spinach, Veggie, etc.) and Chips/Bread, Frozen Appe zer, Small Veggie Pla er, etc.
Items do not need to be cut up or pla ered, but if you have the me it would be greatly appreciated.
Receipts with your name and "Oneg Shopping" wri en at the top can be le in the office or in the white
mailbox outside the office for reimbursement. Total to be reimbursed should be a maximum of $40.
Thank you again for your help in making our weekly worship an even more wonderful experience. If you
have any ques ons, feel free to contact me. Have a wonderful day!
