their children the precious gift of faith.
HOLY FATHER'S INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY
Peace: That those from diverse religious traditions and all people
of good will may work together for peace.

religious men and women may rediscover the joy of following
Christ and strive to serve the poor with zeal.

clutter of everyday life, to make room for God to work in you,
or to stop and listen? Do you long to strengthen your
relationship with God? Then a Silent Directed Retreat may be
what you are seeking. The silence helps you hear God’s
invitation to open your heart and surrender your soul in a
deeper way. It helps you to untangle yourself from the many
responsibilities, tasks, and even relationships that can keep

you from being free enough to respond to God. Along with
the silence, meeting with a Spiritual Director each day of the
retreat will help you discern God’s invitation and offer
suggestions to help guide you during your silence. God
invites us, “Come and rest in me.” No matter how hectic our
lives have gotten, the invitation is always open.

Catholic Charities has initiated a support group for people
with mental health challenges to know that they are valued
and genuinely welcome.
The group is called the St.
Dymphna Society. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of each
month in Fletcher Hall, at St. John Center, at 6:00 p.m. Mass
is held, and meetings follow. To learn more contact Rebecca
Cargile, 664-0340 x 355. No reservations are necessary, and
all are welcome!
Focus on Mental Illness - Justice Issues: In 1963, when the
de-institutionalization of mental institutions, asylums, and
hospitals was mandated, the local communities that were to
provide services never received the necessary and promised
funding, resulting in hundreds of thousands of patients with
no place to go. This dilemma still exists today: many families
are ill equipped to handle the needs of family members with
mental illness, and many small-scale institutions have
precisely the same terrible conditions decried in 1963.
Community based services are often underfunded, access to
health care may be a continual challenge, and far too many
people with mental illness are on their own— often homeless
or in prison. What action steps can our parish take to advocate
for better systems of care for people with mental illness and
their families?
We will have our “Come and See” Diocesan Priesthood
Discernment Retreat on January 2-3, 2015 here at St. John
Catholic Center, 2500 N. Tyler Street, Little Rock, AR. For
more information, visit us at dolr.org, contact the Vocations
office at (501) 664-0340 or by email at [email protected].
Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. in Fletcher Hall on Friday,
January 2nd. This retreat is FREE. The “Come and See”
Diocesan Priesthood Discernment Retreat is given by the
seminarians of our diocese. This 24 hour retreat is rooted in
prayer and consists of talks (including a vocation to the
religious life), discussion panels, vocational videos, and
personal testimonies by seminarians. The goal is to provide
the participant (men age 16 and up) with an opportunity to
explore more deeply a possible calling to the Diocesan
priesthood or religious life.
