2 JOURNAL PIONEER, Thursday, December 18, 2014
Hi, Ronald. I know
what you mean about
some of those pigeons.
They do seem to really
get around! This hint
works well, whether it’s to keep birds from
roosting or from flying into windows, like
our big picture ones. Hang some decorations or ribbon (I even taped a few pieces of
ribbon on the glass door), and it’s usually
just enough movement to ward off the
birds.

SNAKES IN THE GARDEN
Dear Heloise: My mother-in-law found a
few garden snakes in her small garden. She
moved into a townhome, but she must
have her garden to stay busy and happy.
What should she do?
-- Hannah in Texas
Most folks don’t care for snakes, especially if you are tending a garden or a flower
bed. I live in the “semicountry” in San Antonio, and we do have some of the slithering
critters around. Several have found their
way into our home through the years. I was
NOT happy!
Many times, snakes find warmth in and
around houses during the winter. Sometimes they are out sunning themselves, but
oh how I wish they would do that in someone else’s yard!
First, seal all cracks between the house
and patio, foundation and basement windows, if you have them. Snakes like to hang
out in tall grass, overgrown shrubs, piles of
wood, etc., so DON’T stack wood against
the house or outbuilding, and keep it off the
ground, if possible. Don’t give them a place
to make a home. Don’t leave pet food out,
which brings mice, which in turn brings
snakes looking for a meal.
Live and let live, I say, but don’t come
into my house uninvited!
-- Heloise
E CAPSULE FOR HANDS
Dear Heloise: As I walk every morning, I
take a vitamin E capsule along. I stick a pin
into it and rub the oil into my hands, nails
and cuticles. By the time I get home, the oil
is absorbed, and my hands are soft.
-- Valerie, via email
FURNITURE POLISH
Dear Heloise: My mother is frustrated.
She had used a furniture polish on her
antiques that she made from one of your
recipes. She has misplaced the recipe. She
does not remember the amounts, only that
an ingredient had to be bought at a pharmacy. Could you reprint the recipe?
-- Julie D., via email
Absolutely! Don’t fret -- it’s as simple as
a look in your pantry (for olive oil) or a stop
at the pharmacy to pick up "sweet oil,"
which is olive oil without any scent, etc.
Simply mix 2 parts sweet oil or olive oil
with 1 part apple-cider vinegar. Pour it into
a spray bottle and label with the contents
and the date. Give the bottle a few good
shakes to mix up, spray on a CLOTH -- not
the table directly -- and make that piece of
furniture shine. This polish is great for
most furniture. Just DO NOT use on raw or
unfinished wood.

Care comes in
many packages
Dear Heloise: My daughter is in her first year of college out of state. I want to send her CARE PACKAGES, but there are too many choices. Do you have
any hints?
-- Rachel, via email
Sure do, and I can tell you, when I was in college
and saw a package from my mother or daddy, I knew
it was going to make me happy!
There is a difference between
want and need! What are
favourite candies, snacks, magazines, etc.? College students often
live on takeout or microwave
meals. Homemade goodies are
just the best, even if they do arrive
in less-than-perfect shape. Who
cares? They still taste the same!
A themed care package can be
fun to put together and fun to
open up. For a cheap night in,
make a box full of movies, popcorn and candy. A “need” (but
maybe not “want”) gift box is one full of tissues,
cough drops, medicine, tea and instant soup. Do put
in a treat, too!
When packing, put items that might leak in a zipper-top plastic bag. For cookies, wrap in plastic
wrap, then put in a hard, plastic leftover container.
Use softer items to cushion things needing a little
more care. Don’t waste space on unusable packing
materials.
No matter what, your college student will love getting a piece of home. If it is packed with love, it is perfect!

BROWN GROCERY BAG
Dear Heloise: My grocery store uses brown paper
bags with sturdy handles. When going to a friend’s
house, they make carrying food dishes easier than
plastic bags. During the holidays, I use them to carry
gifts in from the car and back out on the way home.

PET PAL
Dear Readers: Melba and Bud Carter in Montalba,
Texas, sent in a picture of their gray toy poodle,
Tufer, sitting in the middle of a field of bluebonnets.
Melba and Bud say that Tufer loves to travel with
them in their motor home and play with the rabbits
that live on their property. To see Tufer’s picture, go

Dear Readers: As promised, here are more
KITCHEN MISHAP stories, and boy, are
some of them a hoot:
* Connie F. in Texas wrote: “I made tuna
casserole many times.
One day, we sat down
to eat, and the casserole was horrible. I
checked the tuna can
and discovered that I
had used cat food -- one
of the smelliest-fish cat
foods ever. P.S.: Even
the cat wouldn't eat it.”
* Stephanie R., via
email, said: “I was married only two weeks
and cooking my first
Thanksgiving dinner. I
had many dishes to prepare. When it came
time for dessert, I cut the pecan pie. It
seemed very oozy, but my husband said it
was wonderful anyway. Later that day, I
realized I had forgotten to bake the pie! It
looked done, since I had prebaked the
crust!”

Vinegar takes on winter windows
Dear Heloise: In the wintertime, I spray the
outside glass on my vehicle with VINEGAR.
In case it gets below freezing and snows,
the ice and snow won’t stick to the windows. When the other cars’ windows are
covered with ice and snow, mine are clear.
-- Marvin O. in Montana
This is an old, classic Heloise hint. You
want to mix either white or cider vinegar
with water (a ratio of 3 parts vinegar to 1
part water) before using on car windows.
This hint is one of many in my Heloise’s
Fantabulous Vinegar Hints and More pamphlet.
To order one, which includes some
favourite recipes and other money-saving
hints, please send $5 and a long, selfaddressed, stamped (70 cents) envelope to:

Hints
From Heloise
FAMILY TREE
Dear Heloise: I have the
solution for familyphotograph Christmas cards. I now have
two trees -- one traditional and the other
with lights and only photographs cut to
size. Florist wire makes quick hangers, and
you can put on enough lights so you can
call it your "family tree." It’s one-of-a-kind. I
have been doing this for years, and during
our open house, people spend more time
looking at all the pictures than at my Nativity sets.
-- Catherine T., Conroe, Texas
MOVING HINT
Dear Heloise: With our children off to college, my husband and I decided to sell our
home and downsize. Everything we wanted to keep would not fit in our new house.
So we rented a storage unit.
To keep boxes and furniture organized,
we used different-colour packing tape -red to storage and blue to the new home.
We tagged furniture with sticky notes of
red or blue.
We also organized the boxes in two separate areas.
The movers were grateful for our foresight, making their job easier. Also, it lessened the time to load and unload, so we
had a lower-than-anticipated bill.
-- Theresa C., via email
BICYCLISTS BEWARE
Dear Heloise: In your column on bicycle
basics, you omitted what I feel is the most
important safety aspect of bicycle safety:
notifying other bicyclists when passing
them. When approaching another bicyclist
when you are about to pass, always clearly
call out “Passing!” or “Passing on your left!”
-- J.H. in Ohio
Thanks for a good addition to bicycle
safety hints! Of course, this is in a situation
where one is assuming that it is safe and
legal to pass another bicyclist. That said, in
my mind, the most important safety aspect
is wearing a helmet.
-- Heloise
LAUNDRY ROOM
Dear Heloise: I keep a pair of reading glasses in the laundry room for reading washing
instructions on garments. Some of those
labels have very small print.
-- Jodi, via email
SAVE MONEY
Dear Heloise: I like to have a few plain
almonds, walnuts or pecans each day
because it is healthy. The ones from the
produce section of the grocery store are
much cheaper than ones in the baking
aisle. With Christmas baking season coming up, this could be a way for all those bakers to save a little dough.
-- Jeanette M., via email
Yes it is! Remember this all year long,
too!
