Eastland CUSD #308
With winter approaching, Eastland administrators are preparing in the event that cancellations and postponements
are necessary. Decisions on whether to cancel school will be made by Superintendent Hansen, in consult with
neighboring districts, the Director of Operations, and various township road commissioners. These decisions will
be made either the night before, or the morning of the cancellation. If a decision is made to cancel school due
to inclement weather, a Skylert automated phone call distribution will be made. Calls will go to the primary and
secondary phone numbers listed for all students enrolled in the school. If you would like to change these numbers, or
add additional numbers, this can be done through the Skyward link on the district homepage.
Cancellations will also be communicated to the following radio and television stations: WFPS/WRFL (92 FM),
WCCI (100.3 FM), WSDR (1240 FM), WLLT (107.7 FM), and WXXQ/WZOK/WROK (98.6 FM), KWQC TV6, Newschannel

or postponements will be communicated in the same ways.
As a reminder to students using in-town bus stops, winter weather often means that buses will travel slower
than normal. Sometimes we have had buses stopped due to having a wheel in a bank, or not being able to climb
a grade on an icy section of road. This can result in delays for buses getting to their destinations. If your student
typically waits at an in-town bus stop, parents should prepare for the possibility that the bus would be late in
arriving. On particularly cold days, some suggestions would be to drive the student to the stop and wait in the car,
or to drive the student directly to the school where he/she can wait inside the building until the shuttle buses arrive.
Please use caution when driving this winter, particularly in school zones where students may be walking on foot.
If you have any questions or want to make a change to your phone contacts, feel free to contact the school offices.

The week of October 27-31st
Eastland Elementary School
celebrated
Red Ribbon Week.
Red Ribbon Week is a campaign observed annually to
promote healthy living and the commitment to a drug-free
lifestyle. Ms. Engelkens 3rd grade

This
year
Eastland
Elementary School participated
in activities to promote and
celebrate healthy living and making healthy choices. School
Social Worker, Cory Walters made presentations to classes on
how to live a healthy life and make healthy choices. Other
activities included Show Your School Spirit- Drug Free - All
students were encouraged to dress in school colors to show
their unity in making healthy choices. Students also helped
with the event by decorating the school, handing out red
ribbons, and “planting the promise” to live a drug free life as
they planted red tulip bulbs in front of the school.
Fourth Grade News
Math Memos:
We have been learning to use place value to multiply and
divide multi-digit numbers.
Students have been extending their understanding of place
value to multiply and divide numbers.
Students have discovered that division is the inverse of
multiplication
Students have been using estimation to check the
reasonableness of an answer.
We have begun our chapter on Tables and Line Graphs and
will soon begin Data and Probability.
Big Idea: Information can be analyzed to find a typical value
for a data set. Data can be analyzed to predict the likelihood of
an event happening.
**Please continue to check the “Planner” and folder nightly
for homework assignments
Reading class:
This year, EES has been implementing a school-wide
guided reading program where students receive more reading
instruction at their appropriate level, and in a small group
setting. Those small group lessons give the teacher a greater
opportunity to get to know each individual child’s reading
strengths and weaknesses, which will be tracked over time to
determine proficiency.
Teachers have been spending time assessing students and
listening to them read, as well as reviewing skills and strategies
that good readers use.
The following are some basic things that we are looking for
to show proficiency in guided reading:
Proficient readers:
• search for connections between what they know and the
new information they encounter in texts they read
• ask questions while they read
• draw inferences during and after reading
• distinguish important from less important ideas in text
• monitor their thinking as they read
Social Studies:
We finished studying the East coast and enjoyed presenting
those FANTASTIC dioramas! They were so creative!!! We hope
you have time to see them all in the media center before they
go home.
Lately, we have been studying the Southern Region of
the United States. Students have been learning some of the
many ways people earn a living in the South, and we began
discussing Civil Rights.
Melinda Charbonneau, from the University of IL Extension,
was our guest speaker last month. She spoke to us about our
Hungry Planet. Students worked in groups to discover how and
what people in other parts of the world eat.
Science:
Fourth graders get so excited about science! We’ve been
studying Energy; most currently Light and Sound Energy.
We’ve done many experiments and demonstrations to help
make some of these abstract concepts more concrete for our
students. Class favorites were watching black marker become
all of the colors of the rainbow, and creating “Soda Straw
Oboes” to demonstrate the concept that vibrations create
sounds! Students also use their reading, writing, speaking and
listening skills daily as they learn about important concepts
through written texts.
F.Y.I Mr. Walter’s Jump Start Character Ed program:
“Thankfulness & Generosity”
The Thanksgiving holiday is a great time to discuss with your
children the importance of being thankful and developing their
awareness of giving thanks.
RELAX! Sometimes our family schedule gets too busy
with errands, practices, work, and school events. We forget
to schedule a time to just stay home with our children and
relax. Planning a family game night or just having popcorn and
watching a movie as a family creates great childhood memories
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Second Grade Spotlights
The second grade students at Eastland were busy learning
about wheat and how it is milled into flour which is used to
make bread. So, they rolled up their sleeves and tried their
hand at making a loaf of bread. While working with a partner,
they measured and leveled the ingredients, then squeezed
and kneaded the dough, let it rise, baked it, and ended up
with a tasty loaf!
Mixing and Measuring — Jordan Day and Olivia Klinefelter;
Caylie Schubert and Ella Dampman; Austin Warner and
Corey Garrett.
My favorite Christmas tradition is going to my grandma’s
house to give presents to all the relatives. We also like to have
a giant feast at her house. My favorite part is getting to see
my cousin, Emery. ~Ava Miller
My favorite tradition is going
down to open on Christmas
morning. This Christmas I might
get an Ipod. I’m going to ask
Santa for one. ~Ava Parker
My favorite tradition is when my family comes over. I love
that because my Grandma gives me presents. I get to eat
really good food, too. ~Austin Warner
My favorite memory is getting presents. When I opened my
present I got an Ipod. I was my favorite present at Christmas.
My favorite tradition is putting up my tree. I get to put the star
up. It is fun. ~Jordan Day
Abi Parker and Trinity
Carroll getting their bread
ready.
Alexander Salins and
Jonathan Spoerlein adding
their ingredients.
My favorite Christmas memory is when I got my electric
scooter. I really liked it because it came with spikes. It also
came with designs for it. Sometimes I have it off because I
want to practice with my scooter and sometimes I have it on.
When it’s on I like to ride it. I really like my scooter. –Alex
My favorite Christmas memory is last Christmas. I liked
that Christmas because I got this big horse toy that I could sit
on. I also got to watch the new movie Barbie and the Sister
and the Ponytail. My favorite part was the horse with the strike
of pink in it’s hair. That was my favorite Christmas memory. –
Madison
My favorite holiday memory is hometown Christmas.
During hometown Christmas, I like to look at the stuff that we
put out. We put out wooden lights and snowmen with three
parts that you can put things in. There are little stuffed animals
that smell when you put a pack in them and I like those. I get
to spend time with my family when we are doing hometown
Christmas. That is my favorite holiday memory. – Jameson
My favorite Christmas memory was when I got a big hippo.
That morning, I really like it because it was big and I could lay
on him. I got him from my cousin Jessa. He had purple hair
and curls. I like his curls because they are cute. That is why I
like my big hippo. –Molly
My favorite holiday memory is when I got see my grandma
in the morning, my other grandma’s house, and my cousin’s
house. I played with one of my cousins and I unwrapped
presents that morning. I also like the memory of doing my
Christmas play in Kindergarten. It was a play about Jesus and
when he was born. My favorite holiday is Christmas. –Dylan
My favorite holiday memory is meeting Santa Claus at my
church. We tell him what we want for Christmas and he says,
“I’ll see what I can do.” Then, he give us candy in candy canes
and we can pick out a book. Last year I picked out Slobber
Monsters. That is my favorite Christmas memory. – Jon
My favorite Christmas memory is when we went to pick out
our Christmas tree last year. We brought it to the house and it
couldn’t fit in the house. It was too tall so it made a mark on
the ceiling. We decorated the tree next and my dad had to get
a ladder to reach the top. It was too tall that we couldn’t put
a star on it. It was fun! – Ella
My favorite Christmas memory is going to the farm. I like
to get greens in the field for the wreaths. I help make the
wreaths. I stomp on the pedal to snap the medal down. I
also like to cut down trees and get wood for the fire. Making
apple cider is also very good. I like Santa to come because I
sleep downstairs to see Santa until I get really tired. Last year,
I heard something really loud on our roof. I went downstairs
and hid so that I could see him. I like all of those things to do
around my house and the farm. – Cooper
PTO
The Eastland PTO would like to thank all the PreK – 6th
grade students and their families who participated in our
Fall Fundraiser. The students sold gifts and food items and
raised a whopping $5,159.50!! These funds will go toward
items and services needed for our district that may not have
been planned for. They include annual $25 teacher requests,
scholarships for graduating seniors, computer programs for
Eastland students and much more. We would like to thank you
ALL for your continued support. Great job Eastland students!
