Fourth Sunday of Advent
Do Not Be Afraid!
Open Wide the Doors to Christ!
Dear People and Friends of St. Joseph’s,
Faithful discipleship has guided us on our journey
through Advent, so that we might be prepared for the Lord
Jesus when he comes, no matter what day or hour. Now
we stand at the threshold of Christmas. The words of the
angel to the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage us as well, “Do
not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”
Faithful disciples are so focused on the Master that they do
not let fear deter them.
As we enter the final days before Christmas, entering
becomes a key action. The Hispanic custom of Aguinaldos
or Posadas uses nine days to recall the journey and effort
of Mary and Joseph to enter a proper place for the Child
to be born. Through hymns, prayers, Scriptures and
sometimes the celebration of the Mass, the Aguinaldos or
Posadas serve as the final efforts to be open to receive the
Lord. As each successive family opens their home so that
their praying guests may enter to receive a hospitable welcome, we are reminded to open our hearts hospitably for
Christ to enter in.
This entering of Christ into our hearts is another
kind of entering that is key at this time of year. Yet, busyness, sin or selfishness can be our way of saying to the
Lord “No room in the inn.” The Sacrament of Confession
assists us in opening our hearts and allowing Christ to enter in. Receiving the Eucharist properly prepared is clearly
another powerful way that we allow Christ to enter our
hearts. However, if we are aware of serious sin, we need
confession first to prepare our hearts to receive him properly. Even if we have not committed any serious sin, confession still helps us root out sin and selfishness so that we
might permit Christ to enter our hearts more deeply than
before.
The monastic tradition provides another avenue by
which to understand this ENTERING. Derived from the ‘O
antiphons of Vespers, the verses of the well-known hymn
“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” celebrate different titles of
Christ who comes with all his graces to make us Whole
and Holy. If we are praying for Christ to come to us, then
we must be willing and ready for him to ENTER.
17th - O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all
creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show
your people the way to salvation.
18th - O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed
yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the
holy law on Sinai mountain: come, stretch out your mighty
hand to set us free.
19th - O Flower of Jesses stem, you have been raised
up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come,
let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.
20th - O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of Heaven: Come, break down the
prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and
the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into
freedom.
21st - O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of
justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and
the shadow of death.
22nd - O King of all the nations, the only joy of every
human heart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come
and save the creature you fashioned from the dust.
23rd - O Emmanuel, king and lawgiver, desire of the
nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord
our God.
Hearing in the Gospel today that Christ is Emmanuel,
meaning “God with us,” we are encouraged to open wide
the doors of our hearts to receive him. May we all gather at
Christmas Mass with the doors of our hearts wide open
that Christ may find a loving, welcoming place to abide. Be
not afraid, for we have Good News.
In the Joy of our Lord’s Coming,
Fr. Allan F. Wolfe
