To All VGM Fall Series Attendees:
Here is (via link) a large Excel file which includes the current master listing of ALL DMEPOS suppliers
with an active Medicare PTAN number. https://data.medicare.gov/data/supplier-directory
(Also, you may reference your power point for additional instructions.)
I will detail the contents of each column below, but, in a short version, the file allows you to view every
location (by NPI) of every company/entity in the U.S. that is eligible to bill Medicare for at least one (of
80) product categories. In addition, the file lists every competitive bid contract currently in effect per
each location/NPI, by product category.
This spreadsheet may be copied/edited and is easily manipulated via the Data/Sort function.
For example, you may wish to copy a certain state or region and obtain a listing of all suppliers in the
area by city for member prospecting, insurance, referrals, advocacy, and many other potential
reasons.
You can also sort these locations as to which suppliers offer certain products…for example CPAP.
There are 80 product categories in which the NSC recognizes and updates via the 855S format.
Many full line suppliers offer dozens of products. Some niche suppliers (think opticians who offer
cataract sunglasses) may only be in one or two categories. You will be able to sort these out by a tool I
reference below.
In the meantime, here is a key to the spreadsheet column…
The first 21 (A to X) identify the supplier by location/contact detail and to whether the supplier has
any competitive bid contracts. It also includes a column (X) as to whether the entity is a participating
Medicare supplier. See below.

Is Supplier Participating?
Beginning with Column K (this is Oxygen Supplies and Equipment) the data option is either NO or
YES. If NO this supplier has no competitive bid contract. If YES then the supplier (in this location) has
a competitive bid contract for that product category. Both Round 1 recompete and Round 2 product
categories follow in columns K through W. Remember there were differences in categories between
these two rounds. At column X the competitive bid data set ends and, as noted, column X is a YES or
NO as to whether the supplier is participating.
The next series of columns include all 80 product categories included within the 855S enrollment
data. If the supplier location is accredited/credentialed to bill Medicare for the category, the indication
is YES. If not NO.

Now, I recognize that much data may be difficult to comprehend.
What you could do is select just a state or region, and copy it into another blank spreadsheet. Then,
using the find and replace function, highlight from Column Y and all through the 80 other product
columns and “find” all the “NO” cells. Replace it with a blank (insert nothing). Now there are many
cells with nothing in them and will be ignored. Do the same thing with the YES “find” but replace it
with a 1 (one).
Then highlight all of the product category columns, and, in the next one to the right of all of them, use
the “count” function. I will show you an example below, but it is merely @count(row number cell
number..row number cell number) and copied all the way down. This will give you how many
categories this supplier location is eligible to bill. Then you can resort the entire list of suppliers from
top to bottom by number of categories. Those suppliers “on top” (with the most categories) are likely
your competitors or HMEs of interest. The ones at the bottom (with just a few) are likely opticians or
niche suppliers.
As an example, I copied all of the Iowa DMEPOS suppliers from the master spreadsheet. (I would
attach it but it is 30 MB!!). I then followed the instructions above and eliminated from any “counting”
all of the Iowa locations with NO in the product columns by a Find and Replace. I did the same thing
with YES, and then used the @count function to array them from top to bottom. (I inserted a new
column next to the company name – B – and titled it “Yes’s – meaning that is the number of YES
results I sorted.)

What I did not copy and paste is all of the product category columns that each supplier location is able
to bill. But it is easy to do and see once the sorting is completed.
Some of you will not want to do all of the sorting steps. That’s fine – you can still visualize the
product categories (and competitive bid contracts by location) without any data manipulation.
