Per tradition at Palo Alto Commons, we select an Employee of the
Month each month. The Avant staff is also eligible to receive this honor,
and we are pleased to announce that our December 2014 Employee of the
Month is Mario C. (photo left), who
is a cook at The Avant. Mario has
been working in our community since
our opening in May. “I felt very good
to win this award,” he said. Prior to
working here, Mario worked as a cook
in many restaurant and adds, “I live to
cook. I love preparing the different
recipes and learning new skills.” Sherry Bucio, Mario supervisor, adds that he is “hard-working, eager to learn new
skills, and always has a positive attitude. He is a great team player and always
tries his best.” Congratulations to Mario!
Per resident request at the November residents meeting, we created and
distributed resident rosters. We will maintain this roster and distribute an
updated one bi-monthly.

LEFT BANK/RIVE GAUCHE * French Cafe * Thursday, December 11, at 2:00pm
Left Bank/Rive Gauche plays French café music from the first half of the
20th-century, along with American, Spanish and Gypsy songs from the same
period.. The trio is made up of violin, acoustic bass guitar, chromatic button
accordion and voice. They play at public and private events on the
Peninsula. Recent and upcoming gigs include the Gamble Garden Tour,
UNESCO International Jazz Day celebration, the Cantor Museum at Stanford
French Exhibition reception, the California Academy of Sciences, and farmer’s
markets on the peninsula. They have made music together as Left Bank/Rive Gauche since 2006, and have
recorded four CDs. Join us on Thursday, December 11, at 2:00pm.

IAN SCARFE & CHARLES AKERT * Classical Piano/Cello* Tuesday, December 9, at 3:15pm
Ian Scarfe returns to The Avant with longtime friend Charles Akert for a program of classical solo and duo
works for piano and concert. This concert will take place on Tuesday, December 9, at 3:15pm, in the lounge.
The program will include some selections from their CD, “Songs My Mother Taught Me”, featuring the music of
Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Bach. If you love classical music, don’t miss this concert!
RESIDENTS MEETING * Monday, December 15, at 11:00am
Thank you to the residents who attend the monthly residents meeting! Sue, Charito, Sherry, and Deeann meet
with residents monthly to discuss their respective departments and to answer residents questions. We truly value
constructive feedback and appreciate any insights, suggestions, of ideas that residents have to offer. We strive to
provide the best customer service and hospitality, so please attend the next meeting with your ideas! The
December residents meeting will take place on Monday, December 15, at 11:00am. See you there!

Our Trivia Dinner Nights are growing in population, and the competition is heating up! This month, the trivia

FIELD TRIP– Christmas Creche Exhibit
FIELD TRIP– Holiday Lights Drive
We will be going to a special outing on Tuesday,
December 9, at 12:30pm, to see the 27th Annual
Christimas Creche Exhibit. This exhibit celebrates
the birth of the Christ Child with more than 350
nativities from around the world in artistic settings and
with live holiday music. The exhibit takes place at
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Palo Alto. Deadline to sign up is December 4.
Cost: free
We are bringing hot chocolate and holiday cookies
and going on a very special holiday lights drive in Palo Alto and San Carlos on Tuesday, December 16. at
7:00pm. We will drive through Christmas Tree Lane
in each town as well as other festive holiday
locations, time permitting. Please sign up at the
Concierge by December 12. Cost: free

MOVIE OUTING– Stanford Theatre
The Stanford Theatre brings the authentic moviegoing experience of Hollywood’s Golden Age! Classic
Hollywood directors never intended for you to watch
their pictures on a video screen in your living room.
We will be attending a matinee presentation of a classic
film on Saturday, December 13, at 2:30pm. (Movie
begins at 3:30pm.) Film to be announced. Please sign

FIELD TRIP– Museum of American Heritage
We will be going to the Museum of American
Heritage on Thursday, December 4, at 1:00pm.
The museum is dedicated to the preservation and
display of electrical and mechanical technology and
inventions from the 1750s through the 1950s. The
museum has a large collection of artifacts that are
generally not accessible to the public. MOAH’s newest
exhibit, Museum of American Heritage A to Z, introduces
visitors to the breadth and depth of the museum’s collection with a variety of artifacts. This unique museum
also features several permanent exhibits, such as an early 20th Century kitchen, a 1920s General Store, a print
shop, and the Marshall Matthews Garage.

Join us on December 7, at 3:00pm, at the Mountain
View Center of Performing Arts, for a concert by
Schola Cantorum. Come and celebrate the holidays
with Silicon Valley's premier 90-voice chorus under
the direction of Gregory Wait in a performance of
Midnight Mass for Christmas. This special program was
composed by Marc-Antoine Charpentier — one of
France's most outstanding seventeenth-century
musicians. Deadline to sign up is December 2.

We will be attending 2 Pianos 4 Hands at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts on Saturday,
January 24, at 2:00pm. In a comic coming-of-age journey from Bach and Beethoven to Joplin and Jerry Lee

FIELD TRIP– PACE Art Gallery in Menlo Park
The current exhibit is entitled, “A Brief History of PACE”. A survey exhibition including over sixty works by
twelve of the artists who have made Pace one of the leading galleries for over half a century. The exhibition marks
the extension of Pace’s temporary Menlo Park gallery, located in the former Tesla headquarters, and follows
surveys of Alexander Calder and Tara Donovan. A timeline of Pace’s history will provide context to the works
on view, chronicling Pace and art history postwar. Join us on this field trip on Monday, January 5. Cost: free

SYMPHONY OUTING– MTT’s ‘Soldier’s Tale’ by San Francisco Symphony
We will attend the San Francisco Symphony performance entitled, “Soldier’s Tale”, at Davies Symphony Hall
on Sunday, January 18, at 2:00pm, in San Francisco. This symphony will be conducted by Michael Tilson
Thomas. This is the story of a soldier, deceived by the devil, with music by Stravinsky. The captivating tale is
brought to life by a special guest narrator. Deadline to sign up is January 1. Cost: $99
