PASTORAL CARE NEWS
Our 2015 Year 7 Student Welcome Day saw students placed in Houses, receive their House Shirt and start what we
hope will be a strong connection between House and School. I am sure they went home keen to relate the activities
and support provided by our excellent group of new Peer Support Leaders. Our Leadership Program, developed by our
Pastoral Care Team includes: a general Year 10 Leadership Day, a thorough interviewing process and special Peer
Support training. The selected Peer Support Leaders, will continue to develop their leadership skills through the year

2014 Champion House Cups
Congratulations to Loyola House on winning the Champion House.
The points table shows how Loyola were consistently involved in
many aspects of College life. The concept that Mr Edmunds speaks
about, of a student being able to leave their “Paw Print”, very much
highlights the positive culture of Loyola and how everyone can make
a contribution in some way.

iPAD INFORMATION
FOR 2015 STUDENTS OF YEARS 8, 9 and 12
We recently updated the iTunes U course called "iPads at Seton”, particularly the list of the required apps for
2015. I don't envisage that there will be many changes from the apps students currently have on their iPad, but it
would be good to check. The information in the guides, which includes material on digital citizenship and online
awareness, is very important.
If you have not enrolled in the course, follow these instructions to do so:

Download the free iTunes U app from the App store
Open the App store app
In the search box at the top right, type “iTunes U” and then select “Search”
The iTunes U app will appear
Select “Free” then “Install”
Once the app has downloaded to your iPad, open it, then

Select the “+” from the top left and choose "Enrol in a Course"

The code to use is E33-FM7-RZ2

After entering the code select “OK”
We will be holding a Parent information session on Wednesday 18 February next year which will expand on the
session we held this year and help inform you around the use of the iPad at the College. We are interested on
your thoughts on how the iPad has contributed to students learning this year. When you have 5 minutes spare
please go here http://goo.gl/forms/HnFnzIQywD to complete a quick survey.
FOR 2015 STUDENTS OF YEARS 7, 10 and 11
As you are aware all students will be using an iPad at the College in 2015.
iPad configuration sessions:
To ensure a smooth introduction of the iPads, we request that you and and your son/daughter attend an iPad
configuration and information session on Tuesday 27 January 2015. The sessions will be held at 9am, 12pm,
2pm and 6pm.
During these sessions we will:

Go through the philosophy of using iPads in education and how students can make the most of their iPad

Go through what students need to do on their iPad before school starts

Set up wireless access to the College network

Set up access to eBooks (Years 7 - 10 students)

Answer any questions
Go here http://goo.gl/dJvALZ to enrol in one of the sessions.
What you need to do before the configuration session:

Purchase an iPad as described on the booklist. We do not have a preferred retailer, there is no bulk
purchase discount, 3G is not necessary and the type of protective case you buy is your own choice.
If you currently own an iPad (either 16GB or 32GB but not an iPad mini) this iPad will
suffice.
If you are looking to purchase a new iPad, these are the recommended specifications:
- iPad Air
- WiFi
- 32GB or more
With the release of the iPad Air 2, the original iPad Air is now $150 cheaper.



Purchase $50 iTunes credit
Sign up on line to attend one of the sessions at Seton on Tuesday 27 January (details above)
Create an Apple ID using your son or daughter's @seton.wa.edu.au email address and enrol in the iTunes
U course. Go here http://goo.gl/iW4zR7 for an overview of how to do this. (If this link does not open in
your browser window, click "File" then "Download" from the menu).
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 27 January. A session focused on helping parents familiarise
themselves with the iPad, its use at school and safety options will be held on Wednesday, 18 February. If you
have any questions, please contact Greg Port at [email protected] 9314 1816 ext 626.
Greg Port, Head of ICT Integration
I have just returned from a very successful trip to Thailand. Each of the students were a credit to themselves, the
school and the educational project. It is a beautiful project, something that brings different faiths together and
different cultures together. There is a shared focus on the value of education in changing lives for the better.
Everyone who is part of the trip is educated in some way for we can all learn from each other, particularly when
we are outside of our normal day to day routine. From our perspective, we taught a little but learned so much
more, we gave a little but received so much more. Throughout next year I wish to share with you more of what
the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition do in Thailand, but also what they do in our own local area. They are
wonderful inspirations on how to serve with humility. Below are a few words from Jessica Smart, who is to be
congratulated on her fine leadership of the students. She leaves Seton at the end of this year and her impact on
our Thailand education project is one of her outstanding legacies.
Mr Don Parnell – Deputy Principal, Pastoral Care
The students who attended this year’s Seton
Education Project did themselves, their families and
the college proud. Although the trip was a short 10
days, many hours of preparation were spent to
ensure that the final trip would be a success;
planning lessons, learning customs and language,
creating a performance as well as planning for the
day to day experiences we might encounter. This
was a committed group whose members often
showed initiative which allowed us to tailor the trip
to make the most of the qualities and experiences
of the team. Well done to the eight students on
their fantastic efforts in the lead-up, and their
brilliant commitment to making the most of their
time abroad.
A fine group of budding leaders, the group took to all presented challenges well, often displaying a maturity
beyond their years. Living in unfamiliar circumstances proved to be both eye-opening and fun, with students
happy to share their living space with large families, making tight bonds with their wonderful hosts who opened
up their hearts and their homes. Students particularly enjoyed the family time in the mornings and evenings;
eating, talking, singing, playing games with the younger members of the family and learning how to cook the
delicious Thai cuisine. I’d like to say a huge thank you to our hosts, who looked after the children as if they were
their own, with great concern for their safety and wellbeing. Equally, the Thai teachers responsible for our kids
were a very special group of people, picking up our students for school, checking on them in the evenings and
always going above and beyond to help us out where they could. Thank you all so very much.
Still in school themselves, I was proud of the confidence shown by our students in the way that they lead small
classroom activities and full sessions of their own in the areas of Visual Art, Sport, Music and Cooking. The
teaching round-robin was a huge success, with students running four sessions over the afternoon, with little (to
no) help from an interpreter. The two schools that we visited had students from Kindergarten through to Year 10
and so our students had to adapt quickly to create suitable lessons and activities for different age levels; a
challenge for even seasoned teachers. This was a difficult, yet rewarding experience which certainly challenged
the students, who were happy to state at the end of the day that “teachers who do this every day are amazing”.
The Seton students approached their
responsibilities in the classroom with the
best of intentions and a ready smile, which
enabled many positive interactions
between themselves, the Thai teachers
and the Thai students. Thank you to the
entire Seton community for their support
of this fantastic extension of our
evangelical mission.
Ms Jessica Smart Arts - Drama & Dance
ARTS
The Artist in Residence Project (Air) began as part of a collaboration between schools and graduate students of
ECU. The aim is to offer both Primary and Secondary schools the opportunity to work with Arts graduates in their
final year of specialisation in a range of Arts disciplines. Local jewellery maker, Catherine Jack, was assigned to
work with Seton students and staff who were interested in creating a sculptural artwork that would be a part of a
concept to add public sculpture created by our students to our College grounds.
Catherine worked with a group of selected GATE Arts students as part of an extension program to create a
beautiful copper sculpture that was thematically based on areas around our College that students felt were
special places of retreat, beauty and solace. Armed with a pencil, each student drew from observation their
significant places and then using the methods of distressing and annealing on copper plates finally brought them
together in a circular form completing the unity of the composition. The students gained valuable skills from this
experience working across age levels, with new materials and technologies with interest.
Catherine graduates as a Materials, Design and technology teacher in 2015 and we were so impressed with her
work, that we employed her to continue to share her skills and talents as a full time teacher at Seton. Catherine
also has an interest in glass, metals, materials and wood. So, it looks like this sculpture will be the first of many
more to come!
Sharon Le Ray, Head of Arts
Calling on all of our talented Seton entertainers past and present.
Where are you and what are you doing now?
It’s time to dust off your dance shoes, rehearse your signature tunes, locate your fellow
musicians and tread the boards for one last time to be a part of Seton Catholic College’s
25th Anniversary celebrations on Friday 13 March at the International Food Festival from
5:00 – 9:00pm. All entertainment will be performed on the thrust stage in the St Brendan’s
Gymnasium. So if you sing, dance, play an instrument or are part of a performance group or
band, or even if you have a special skill or talent that you would like to share then we urge
you to be a part of our celebrations. To book your timeslot, please contact Sharon Le Ray on

DELANY
The end of another great year for Delany House! Congratulations go to Amy Sachman and Kate
Bell who won the Senior and Junior Delany Dragon’s Breath Awards, respectively. The Dragon’s
Breath Award is not given at random but is based on a points system, where every contribution
made to Delany House gains points. Both girls were involved across the board this year in Arts,
Sport and Ministry and are an example to all of what it means to have true House spirit. Let’s
have as many Delany students as possible challenging for these awards in 2015!
BOOKLISTS AND SECOND-HAND TEXTBOOK TRADING
Booklists are now on the College Website under Student Services. For Years 7 to 10, most of the books will
be eBooks and the cost will be added to the First Term school fees. Parents wishing to sell books second
hand are able to do this through the Sustainable School Shop website. See below.
Second-Hand Textbook Trading
The College is delighted with the outcomes and will continue to use the services of the Sustainable School Shop
to enable families to buy and sell their second-hand textbooks and other student resources. With the advent of
e-books, families may find this service more useful for selling than buying, particularly in lower school.
Complimentary subscriptions provided by the Sustainable School Shop for the past year will expire after 12
months.
Families are offered three levels of access:

Search only - registering/logging-in on the Sustainable School Shop. Searching all the for sale ads and
gaining the sellers’ contact details is free

It costs $1 to advertise single items.

Subscription - an annual subscription costs $19.95 and is the most anyone will pay. These are taken by
families who have many items to advertise.
The service provides access to second-hand textbooks, calculators, stationery, musical equipment, etc all year
round. Parents can trade with other parents from nearby schools and sell items no longer in use at the College.
For the best results:

Register on the website: www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au

List your items for sale

List wanted ads for those items you are looking to buy

The College’s booklists are loaded into the system to make listing ads easy

The system matches the ads of buyers with sellers and notifies the buyer via email

Buyers contact sellers and arrange where and when to trade

Most trading will occur with other parents from the College.

Parents are well supported via Sustainable School Shop’s telephone (1300 683 337) and email help lines

The system is simple and easy to use - If you don’t have a computer, internet access or an email address,
please call the Sustainable School Shop for assistance
All enquiries should be directed to the Sustainable School Shop on 1300 683 337 or help is also available through
‘Contact Us’ on their website at www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au

Year 7 Girls Basketball Final
The Girls progressed to the Finals of the prestigious Basketball WA
Champion’s Cup at the State Basketball Centre on 26 November where
they played a determined style of basketball against some of the State’s
best basketball schools. Each game was hard fought with some very
narrow loses and a tight win. The experience was something the girls
won’t forget and they will be stronger in the years to come from that
experience. A special thank you must go to Jalen Smith and Isabelle
Miotti for assisting on the day.
