Quote
“Holly and

Candles and
bells,
I know the
message
That each of
you tells.”
~ Leland B.
Jacobs
After a meeting several days ago, I
couldn’t find my keys. I quickly gave
myself a personal “TSA Pat Down.”
They weren’t in my pockets.
Suddenly I realized I must have left
them in the car. Frantically,
I headed for the parking lot. My
husband has scolded me many times
for leaving my keys in the car’s
ignition.
He’s afraid that the car could be
stolen. As I looked around the parking
lot, I realized he was right.
The parking lot was empty. I
immediately called the police. I gave
them my location, confessed that I
had left the keys in the car, and that it
had been stolen.
Then I made the most difficult call to
my husband:
“I left my keys in the car and it’s been
stolen.”
There was a moment of silence. I
thought the call had been
disconnected, but then I heard his
voice.
“Are you kidding me?” he barked,
“I dropped you off!”
Now it was my turn to be silent.
Embarrassed, I said, “Well, come and
get me.”
He retorted, “I will, as soon as I
convince this cop that I didn’t steal
your damn car!”
Welcome to the golden years…..
For many families, the
tradition of decorating a
gingerbread house is an
annual holiday event. Little
do they know that they are
participating in a tradition
that is centuries old.
Though the English are
credited with being the first
to bake and sell gingerbread
when they introduced the
Gingerbread Man, they
weren’t the first people in
Europe to bake this unique
treat. In fact, it was an
Armenian Monk who is
actually credited for bringing
gingerbread to Europe back
in the 10th century. . In the
16th century, gingerbread
was also available for
purchase in farmers’ markets
and pharmacies. It wasn’t
until gingerbread found its
way to Britain that it started
being painted. It was
displayed in shop windows
and became the popular
holiday treat we now know
today.
Though decorating
gingerbread cookies had
become a growing trend, the
popular activity of
decorating gingerbread
houses didn’t take hold until
the publishing of Hansel and
Gretel by the Brothers
Grimm. This well-known
German tale also resulted
in German settlers bringing
gingerbread to America,
where it continues to be
popular today.

Annual Gingerbread
House Competition will
take place on Tuesday
December 2nd.

Keeping Healthy for the Holidays
By the first of December,
the holiday season is
already well underway.
It’s a season of feasts and
parties, tempting desserts,
and freely flowing drinks.
Combine this steady
eating with harsh and
discouraging weather, and
it is not uncommon to
suddenly pack on a few
extra pounds. Fortunately,
there are ways to both
enjoy the holidays
and stay fit well into the
new year. Despite our best
intentions to eat light, it is
near impossible to resist a
full holiday table with all
the trimmings. The trick is
not to “save” your appetite
before the big meal. Don’t
skip breakfast and lunch.
Instead, have four to six
mini-meals throughout the
day to sustain your
metabolism and keep
burning calories. Then you
will be less likely to
overeat. To increase a
feeling of fullness and
reduce your appetite, eat
water-based foods that are
low in calories, such as
brothy soups, fruits, and
vegetables. Also, when
dinner arrives, eat slowly.
It takes at least 20 minutes
for your stomach to signal
to your brain that it is full.
Maintaining an exercise
routine may be the most
important factor in staying
fit. Make a point of
exercising before the big
meal or holiday party.
Often you can even find
holiday-themed
community events like
Turkey Trots or Jingle
Jogs.

Resident of the Month: Betty Mauer
Our Resident of the month is Mrs. Betty Mauer.
Betty was born at St. Catherine’s Hospital on
Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY. Betty was
an only child, her father was a N.Y. City
Patrolman. Her mom was a stay at home
mother.
Bettys’ maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Kelly,
lived with the family. Betty’s mother had a
rheumatic heart and really needed her help to
care for her family. When Betty was 12 her
mother passed away. Within a few years
Betty’s father married again. This was a
dilemma because Betty wanted to stay with her
grandmother.
Betty had to go before a judge. The judge tried
to put Betty at ease by asking her age and
asking about school. Then he quickly asked
“why do you want to live with your
grandmother?” Betty quickly piped up
“because my grandmother needs me!” Case
closed the judge ordered her dad to pay child
support to her grandmother. Betty and her
grandmother were very close.
Betty met her husband Lawrence at Grover
Cleveland High School. They became
boyfriend and girlfriend in their sophomore
year. Lawrence left high school in his junior
year to join the Navy.
Betty and Lawrence corresponded when
Lawrence was sent to the South Pacific. His
ship was based in the Philippines.
Betty and Lawrence resumed their relationship
when he was discharged. They were married
in 1947. Betty’s grandmother came to live
with them in Middle Village. They all moved
to Massapequa in 1959. Betty and Lawrence
lived there for 35 years.
Lawrence worked for the NY City Department
of Sanitation. Betty went back to working at a
bank after her two children went off to school.
She had been a bookkeeper for five years
before marrying.
Betty has one daughter Maureen, who brings
us flowers from her garden group sometimes.
She also has one son, Lawrence. Betty was
blessed with six grandchildren and four great
grandchildren.
Betty and Lawrence sold their house in
Massapequa and moved to La Bon Vie in
Patchogue. Unfortunately Lawrence passed
away in 1999. Betty eventually came to Lake
Shore from a rehab in Smithtown.
Betty can be found playing BINGO every day!
She also enjoys attending our parties and many
of our religious services.
Betty is thankful at this Christmas Season to
have found a home at Lake Shore. She is also
happy to be blessed with a wonderful
roommate, Angie Hranicka.
