PASTOR’S CHRISTMAS MEDITATION
I remember when I was a little boy in Holy Name School and “Sister” told
us that Christmas was not the most important day of the year - Easter was!
What a shock! What a revelation! Of course, “Sister” was correct (as always) - if Jesus had not risen on the third day, we would not celebrate His
birth. But then, why all the presents, all the music, the decorations, the cookies, the time off of school for Christmas, not Easter?
Those are good questions and I don’t know the answer. But perhaps it’s because we
need all those things at this time of year with the cold, dark, endless days of winter staring us in the face. And Jesus did not come to save our souls only but our minds as well.
So I doubt that He objects if we get a little carried away in celebrating His birthday. Just
don’t forget the poor - don’t shut them out of our celebrations or put them in the barn!
Perhaps that is the message of Christmas for us at this time and place.
So, on behalf of Fr. Brian, Sr. Margie and the entire Holy Name Parish Staff, I pray that
each and every one of you may have a truly Blessed Christmas Season that brings you
real peace and joy. God bless us every one!
Msgr. David Lockard

CHRISTMAS OFFERING TO OUR LORD THROUGH HOLY NAME PARISH
As we enter the season of Advent we need to draw up a list of people to whom we wish
to give a Christmas gift—paper carrier, mail delivery person, teacher, etc. not to mention
family members and friends. Whether you see our parish as part of your family or simply
as a “service provider,” I encourage you to be sure to include Holy Name on your Christmas list. The parish expenses always go up around Christmas—the utility bills, snow removal, bonuses for our hard-working employees—so every parish, including ours, depends upon a generous Christmas donation from its membership.
As it is with other forms of giving, so it is with the Christmas offering for our parish. Only
you know what is a fitting gift for you to give. However, we have just completed an Increased Offertory Appeal at Holy Name, so logically we should increase our Christmas offering accordingly if possible. For example, if you have been giving $40.00 for the last few years, perhaps it is time to give $45.00. Praying about this in the days leading up to the Christmas feast will certainly help one to know what to give this year.
COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
I suppose all of us know of at least one person who
used to be a Catholic but who “dropped out” somewhere along the way for some reason. These folks
need to be invited to return, to “come home” so to
speak. Christmas time is a prime time for such an
invitation. But this must be done gently in a “nonnagging, non-guilting” manner, otherwise things
could become worse. Think of how Pope Francis
would approach a person like this. Pray and ask the
Holy Spirit to give you the courage and the right
words for this important mission. Make this an Advent project this year and every year. Don’t worry if
you don’t see any results immediately. We plant the
seed; another one waters and then some day God
will harvest.
RESTORE CHEER WHERE IT HAS VANISHED
Many older people who live alone don’t bother decorating their homes for Christmas for several reasons:
“It’s too much trouble,” “Christmas is for kids,”
“There’s no one to see the decorations,” “It costs too
much money,” “I’m too tired.” Before Christmas,
think about the elderly people you know and consider delivering a gift such as a table decoration, a
poinsettia, a simple manger scene or the gift of your
time. Any of these gifts can brighten a room or an
apartment and put the quiet holy spirit of Christmas
in place of the loneliness that often marks the season for the elderly and alone.
JOY: The True GiŌ of Christmas
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Pope Benedict XVI commenƟng on the scene of the AnnunciaƟon as recounted in
the Gospel on the 4th Sunday of Advent: “With the angel’s greeƟng to Mary ‘kaire’ in Greek means ‘be joyful’ - so the New Testament begins,” he said. “We
could say that the first word of the New Testament is ‘be joyful,’ ‘be happy,’ in other words, ‘joy.’ This is the true meaning of Christmas: God is near us, so near that
He became a child.”
The Holy Father then highlighted how “we realize that today’s world, where God is absent, is
dominated by fear, by uncertainty.” Nonetheless, “the words ‘be joyful because God is with you and
with us,’ truly open a new Ɵme.”
“Joy is the true giŌ of Christmas, not the expensive giŌs that call for Ɵme and money. We can communicate
this joy simply with a smile, a kind gesture, a liƩle help, or forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly
come back to us...Let us pray that this presence of the liberaƟng joy of God shines forth in our lives.”

Holy Name before the end of the year, you can reduce your income taxes, if you itemize. For more
information or suggestions on giving please call the

good deeds for others. In the Advent spirit of giving we will be collecting donations for “The Gabriel Project”
