Vocational Nursing Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Certificate Program Description The Grayson College Vocational Nursing program requires 46 credit hours and can be completed in 12 months. The Vocational Nursing Program meets five days a week and is considered a full time program. The program follows a non-standard semester format. Classes begin in August and students complete three (3) 14-week semesters with scheduled breaks, completing the program the next August. Clinical course rotations may vary to include day or evening shifts. Students prepare for licensure by completing the course requirements as stated below. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a certificate in vocational nursing. Graduates must subsequently apply to take the NCLEX-PN exam. If successfully completed, the graduate will be issued a license to practice nursing as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). (HESI Admission Assessment test may be taken two (2) times in a 12 month period). Documentation of current enrollment or successful completion of BIOL 2404 (Survey of Anatomy and Physiology)- or– Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs with a grade of “C” or better. Documentation of ability to complete all required immunizations prior to the start of classes in August. This includes Hepatitis A&B series, MMR, tetanus and varicella. These immunizations are taken in series and can take up to six (6) months to complete. Only those with complete files will be considered for admission. Applicants with complete files will be evaluated for selection based on HESI Admission Assessment scores. Students with the highest scores will be selected first Applicants will be notified in writing of acceptance or non acceptance via US mail within 2 weeks of the application closing date. Following acceptance the applicant will be notified of how to complete the DPS/FBI background check required by the Texas Board of Nursing. Failure to complete this process by the appointed deadline date will result in loss of acceptance in the program. The applicant must also attend a mandatory orientation, complete CPR certification and TB test after acceptance. Texas Board of Nursing Eligibility for Admission and Licensure DPS/FBI Criminal Background Check: The Texas Board of Nursing requires ALL newly accepted and standby/alternate students to apply and pay for the DPS/ FBI background check and fingerprint scan PRIOR to final admission to any nursing program in the state of Texas. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below or the DPS/FBI check and fingerprint scan determine the need, you will be required by the Board of nursing to begin the declaratory order process. Results of the DPS/FBI background check may prohibit final admission to the program until the declaratory order is received. If any of the following criteria apply, then a petition for a Declaratory Order must be submitted to the Texas Board of Nursing prior to graduation. If you can answer “yes” to any of the questions listed below, this may prevent you from participating in the clinical component of the program. For any criminal offense, including those pending appeal, have you: been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony; pled nolo contendere, no contest, or guilty; received deferred adjudication; been placed on community supervision or court-ordered probation, whether or not adjudicated guilty; been sentenced to serve jail or prison time, or courtordered confinement; been granted pre-trail diversion; been arrested or have any pending criminal charges; been cited or charged with any violation of the law; been subject of a court-martial, Article 15 violation, or received any form of military judgment/punishment/action? Are you currently the target or subject of a grand jury or governmental agency investigation? Has any licensing authority refused to issue you a license or ever revoked, annulled, cancelled, accepted surrender of, suspended, placed on probation, refused to renew a license, certificate or multi-state privilege held by you now or previously, or ever fined, censured, reprimanded or otherwise disciplined you? Within the past five years, have you been addicted to and/or treated for the use of alcohol or any other drug? Within the past five years, have you been diagnosed with, treated, or hospitalized for schizophrenia and/or psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or borderline personality disorder? Clinical Drug Screen and Background Check: Clinical agencies also require the student to take a urine drug screen test and an additional criminal background check at the beginning of the first clinical course. The cost of the Drug Screen/Criminal Background Check is paid through nonrefundable registration fees. Students are subject to random drug screening throughout the program. Financial Aid: Financial aid is available to students including loans, grants, scholarships and work study jobs. All students seeking financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) over the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (GC’s school code in Step Six is 003570) and a GC Application for Financial Aid available on the GC website at www.grayson.edu.
