Fall Injury Prevention By Proper Screening
D
izziness and vertigo are among the top three reasons why
patients visit a physician. Back pain and headaches comprise the other two reasons. Symptoms such as dizziness,
vertigo and imbalance actually are estimated to affect 40% of
patients 40 years of age and older. Of those age 65 years or older, 25% are estimated to suffer a fall and thus a fall related injury. Falling is typically a direct consequence of dizziness, primarily
in this group of elder individuals and risk of falling can increase
considerably when those individuals have other problems such
as high blood pressure or diabetes, or any of the gamut of neurologic defects such as Parkinson's. A sample report of US emergency room visits, from 1995-2004, confirmed that vertigo and
dizziness were indeed high on the list of reported presenting
complaints as reason for reporting to the emergency room. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
demonstrated that individuals with symptomatic vestibular dysfunction have a 12-fold increase in the probability of incurring a
fall.
It has also been associated that more frequent medical consultation, sick leave, and interruption of daily activities in general,
have been related to dizziness symptoms, particularly vestibular
vertigo.
Medical research on ill health is commonly disease focused as
opposed to symptoms related. This generalized approach may
actually underestimate the reality of such common symptoms
as vertigo and dizziness, which as mentioned, rank high as patient complaints in primary care, yet evade accurate diagnosis
and remain unexplained in 80% of cases. Making matters worse,
even though symptoms of vertigo and dizziness can be associated with a wide variety of other conditions, all of which necessitate a multidisciplinary approach to management, said dizziness
symptoms rarely prompt appropriate referral to a qualified specialist for proper evaluation. The most frequent conditions
which cause such symptoms as vertigo and dizziness for the
most part remain largely undiagnosed outside of specialty clinics such as my own.
Because of the substantial risk of injury and the resultant decline in independence and/or quality of life following a fall, predicting who is at risk is most helpful, and for those who reduce
that risk through a fall prevention program, falls and otherwise
impending fall related injuries may be prevented.
Balance is not a single physiologic function. The sensory inputs
for balance include vision, vestibular, and proprioceptive feedback. While a person is walking, the brain must instantaneously
integrate this information and execute appropriate motor planning.
This function must be supported by an adequate neuromusculoskeletal system. All of these factors change with age. Further,
any disease related decline in any of these systems further impairs balance. Bilateral vestibular loss is a significant contributor
in 25% of elderly patients with imbalance. Untreated vertigo is a
severe risk factor for falling as well.
At Physical Therapy Solutions, we have a comprehensive Balance Program that includes assessment and evaluation programs, balance retraining, and vestibular rehabilitation. With
balance retraining and vestibular rehabilitation, our goal is to
improve balance function and visual motor control, increase general activity levels, and help your body compensate for inner ear
disorders. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our
balance therapy programs have a 99% balance improvement
success rate.

The machine also provides visual feedback on the computer screen.
Vestibular problems can be very debilitating for patients and many times they
go undiagnosed for a long time. If you suffer from Dizziness or Imbalance - we
can help you! Our Integrated Balance Program is aimed at decreasing dizziness
and loss of balance so you can stay in balance and
fully participate in a vibrant and active lifestyle.
WHAT IS THE SMART EQUI TEST SYSTEM?
This system was initially developed for NASA to
evaluate how space flights affects balance control
and inner ear functions in astronauts. This
equipment allows rehab professionals to perform
six different tests, while the patient is standing on
a force plate, to measure body movement and sway
during different purposeful movements and when
trying to stand still under various conditions.
HOW DOES TESTING ON THE SMART EQUI SYSTEM
EVALUATE A PERSON’S BALANCE?
Balance is a very complex interaction between the
sensory system and the brain. The system helps us
examine if there is a problem in the interaction between the sensory systems
- eyes, ears, sensation in our feet and joints and the brain, which coordinates
our movements. This equipment also allows us to compare a person’s
performance to that of people their age who don’t have balance or vestibular
issues.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL IT TAKE TO SEE AN IMPROVEMENT IN
BALANCE?
Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation of a person’s
condition. Most patients have seen a significant improvement in as little as one
to two weeks.

What our clients are saying:
As a professional contractor and painter, I was out of work for over a month due to my dizzy
condition, with the morning time being the worse. I tried everything, including medicine, and
nothing worked. My uncle’s wife told me about PTS, so I checked them out. The staff and
Rupangi were very encouraging and in as little as one session, I felt relief from my dizziness.

The percentage of people who buy
drugs online has grown significantly.
While buying drugs online has many
benefits it has couple of demerits also.
One can avoid the bad experience that
may be caused by these demerits by
taking few little precautions.
Find a Legal Pharmacy
Buy drugs from licensed pharmacy. In
order to conduct business online, a
pharmacist need to acquired license.
Such license is issued by respective
regional government body for pharmacists. If the pharmacy, you are thinking
to buy drugs from, claims to be located
in USA then it should have license number provided by one of pharmacists
associations.
Ensure Safety
Once legitimacy of that pharmacy is
confirmed second thing you need to
look for is where that pharmacy buys
drugs from (i.e. which retailer or distributor is the source for that pharmacy
to buy drugs?). Distributor should be
authorized. Also distributor should buy
medications directly from manufacturers of respective drug.
Drugs provided to pharmacy (and
thereby to you) must be in a seal as
produced by the manufacturer. This
ensures that shipped medicines have
not been tampered. In case you feel
you have not received drugs in proper
seal or drugs/drugs packing is damaged
you should not use that medicine and
those drugs should be sent back to
pharmacy.
Ensure Privacy
Make sure no third party is there
between you and the pharmacy you
are buying drugs from. Customers' privacy is not maintained in that case.
Pharmacy must state contact details on
site for customers for assistance such
as order cancellation, fax prescription,
change of shipping address, parcel
tracking and parcel return.
Medical History
Either a medical profile of customers or
a valid prescription, provided by quali-
fied physician, is mandatory to ship
drugs to customers. Do not buy drugs
that does not require prescription. You
are putting your health and money at
great risk by buying drugs without prescription. No legal action can be taken
if pharmacy shipped fake pills or counterfeited medicines (which may show
life threatening adverse effects) or did
not ship at all.
Medical profile: Pharmacy should
maintain medical record of customer
with details such as...
Current administration of other drugs
Recent or past medical history. Health
events such as diabetes or blood pressure or stroke or heart attack or so
on...
Alcoholism, smoking and drug addiction.
List of supplements or herbal or vitamins customer is taking.
Prescription: There are two types of
drugs for consumers; OTC (Over the
Counter) drugs and Prescription drugs.
OTC drug can be bought without any
prescription. Pharmacy is needed to
ask for prescription, written by physician, to sell drug hat requires prescription to buy.
Make sure pharmacy also dispatches
prescription (one that you sent) with
medicines in parcel.
Buy only drug that your physician has
asked you to buy. Do not buy alternative of if the drug you want to buy
online is not available for any reason.

Walking Your Way to Fitness and Weight Loss
Suburban Senior Magazine • 847-848-5987 • December 2014 - January 2015
Walk Your Way to Weight Loss and
Better Health
Many people overlook the multitude
of benefits that walking can bring.
The act of walking has more advantages than most people realize and
yet most of us just can't seem to find
enough time in each day to walk a
little more.
Walking is safe and it's easy. This
low-impact form of exercise has
many more benefits than you would
first think.
Here are some of the benefits of including a regular walk into your week.
Weight Loss
Most people associate weight loss
with several grueling hours at the
gym pushing weights or running on
treadmills. What these people should
understand is that taking a walk
through the park with your dog or
with a friend can help with your lose
weight quickly and easily. Even
though you're not doing any strenuous exercise, by walking you're getting your body moving and helping to
increase your metabolism.
You don't need to walk for hours to
get good weight loss results. Include
a short 10 minute walk during your
lunch break. Park the car further
away from your destination and walk
the rest of the way. Walk around the
mall and window shop. Use the stairs
instead of the lifts. Don't use the car
for short trips, but try to walk instead.
Body Tone
Lack of body tone is where the muscles in your body begin to atrophy
and sag. Even thin people can lose
body tone. You can beat that sagging,
flabby look by making enough time in
your day to take a walk. Walking will
help your body to regain some body
tone as you begin to use the muscles
in your legs, buttocks and stomach.
Increasing your body tone and
strengthening the muscles in your
legs, back and stomach as you walk
can speed up your weight loss plans
and make you look and feel thinner
much faster than dieting.
Lower Blood Pressure
Walking helps your body to regulate
your blood pressure. While you may find
that your heart rate increases a little
during your walk, you'll also notice that
your blood pressure can be easier to
regulate once you're at home resting
again too.
Lower Stress Levels
Many people store excess weight
around the stomach when they can't
find ways to deal with stress properly.
Taking a walk after a
stressful, busy day at
work can help to
clear your mind and
tone your body at the
same time. Being out
in the fresh air and
away from those
stresses gets your
mind thinking about
less stressful topics
and you can begin to
feel much lighter and
happier.
Lower Depression
Symptoms
Many people overeat
to stave off feelings
of depression. When they realize they're
putting on weight, they become even
more depressed and eat more again.
Walking can help your body to release
endorphins, which are the natural feelgood hormones produced by our brain.
Walking on a regular basis can help to
control some of the symptoms of depression by helping you to feel good.
When you feel good, you won't be so
tempted to overeat. By walking, you'll
also be losing weight, which will help to
lift your mood too.
Feel Invigorated
Did you know walking outside in the
fresh air can give you a feeling of invigoration? There's a huge difference in the
feeling you get between walking on a
treadmill indoors and going outside to
walk around.
Just being outside means you're getting a bit of sunshine and some much
needed Vitamin D, but you're also filling
your lungs with fresh air. These simple
things can help you stay motivated with
your weight loss goals and you'll be seeing results and not feeling as though losing weight is too much hard work.
Save Money
Walking is free. You don't have to pay
for gym memberships or expensive
weight loss equipment. Many people living on a tight budget make excuses
about not being able to lose weight because they can't afford the ' special diet
pills' or the expensive gym memberships
or the aerobics classes. Walking costs
only a bit of your time. Simply put on
your shoes and get moving.
Hopefully you realize how many weight
loss benefits there are to taking a simple
walk each day.

Winters coming, and as we all know
this is a time that doesn't just nip at
your nose, it affects your whole body.
According to the National Health Survey Eighty-one Million Americans suffer
from cracked, dry skin each year. The
cold dry winter air can take its toll on
your skin, taking away all oils and water
leaving your skin unprotected. This is
when you experience the pain of itchy,
cracked, irritated skin. Having this happen to you is not only painful - it can
make you more susceptible to infection. Fortunately for you there are various steps you can take to avoid all this
keeping your skin soft, moisturized, and
protected from the icy cold air. Here
are some organic tips to help you along
the way.
You're going to want to start by eating
plenty of Omega 3 fats, these help keep
your skin moisturized, some options
are flaxseeds, walnuts, and wild
salmon. Eggs and avocado are also a
good source for Omega 3 fats. Also eating dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, or romaine lettuce, these can be
very hydrating. If you're strapped for
time, grab an Omega 3 supplement.
You're body needs plenty of water to
stay hydrated so get into the habit of
drinking as much water as you can
now. Even if we weren't talking about
winter - this is always a good idea, 73%
of Americans do not drink enough
stand-alone water, I know, I know - the
sugar filled Pepsi tastes so much better,
but if you want to help your body make

the choice of drinking water more
often.
Using a humidifier is a well known
technique to keep your lips, skin, and
nose moisturized during the winter. If
you're in an office, get one - your coworkers will be very happy you did.
Just be sure to clean it regularly so as
not to suffer a buildup of bacteria,
mold and fungi.
Try to avoid taking those long soothing
hot showers, the change in temperature can have a drastic affect on your
skin, if the water is too hot it can scald
your skin causing it to become dry.
Moreover, during your shower - try to
use organic, moisturizing soap - alcohol based cleansers can leave your
skin dry and ready to crack. During the
winter your best option is to find a
creamy rich cleansing soap that is
designed at moisturizing.
To reiterate what has just been said in
one word, moisturize. It sounds basic the cure to dry skin, is to simply moisturize. Apply heavy, oil based moisturizer on your skin many times a day especially so after being in the bath or
shower when your skin is most vulnerable. The importance of finding an oil
based moisturizer cannot be stressed
enough, it will create a protective
layer on the skin that retains moisture.
A Combination of all of these tips and
techniques will without a doubt help
protect your skin from any level of
cold this winter throws at you.

comparative techniques (laser or radio frequency),
there are greatly reduced pain levels, bruising and
discomfort both during the ClariVein procedure and
post op. This is due to the way that ClariVein works, ie,
it disrupts the lining (the intima) of the vein allowing
the highly effective use of a drug which is used to close
the vein. At a biochemical level, the drug fits into the
epithelial receptors like an enzyme / substrate complex,
this does not happen in the same way if the drug alone
were to be used.
the tumescent anaesthetic is very important to get right
as this prevents the heat reaching into the body and
causing thermal injury, so the need for this part of the
procedure and any risk of it not being done well is
completely eliminated.
Thermal techniques such as laser and radio frequency
use heat to destroy the vein, and as a result cause
severe trauma to it hence much of the pain and bruising
associated with these techniques.
While there is not long term data on the effectiveness
of the technique, there is one year data which is as
good if not better than laser and radio frequency
achieved at the same point. All the indications are that
ClariVein will provide a safe, effective and lasting
treatment for varicose veins.
During the ClariVein procedure, the patient should feel
a “buzzing” feeling in their leg which is not painful.
There is also a quick return to normal activities.
Dominic J. Tolitano, M.D.

t’s the first new treatment to remove varicose
veins in over a decade….and Advanced Vein
Clinics are the original Chicago centers offering it
to patients.
The 15 minute treatment, called ClariVein, is painless,
requires no anesthesia, has less bruising, and
produces results comparable to the traditional laser
procedure. Clarivein is so gentle that patients have to
wear compression stockings for only two days
following the procedure. They actually go back to
work the same or next day.
ClariVein consists of a thin wire that Dr. Dominic
Tolitano threads deep into the vein. That wire then
rotates 3500 rpm like a garden edge trimmer against
the vein’s inner lining while Dr. Tolitano slowly injects
a scarring agent. The combination completely closes a
swollen vein. Combining a mechanical and chemical
injury at the same time makes the treatment
especially effective at closing a swollen vessel. Most
important, the treatment eliminates any risk of
thermal or laser injury and requires only a “pin prick”
to anesthetize the skin.
ClariVein offers greatly reduced pain levels, minimal
discomfort, and minimal bruising. Compared to other
Compared to laser or radio frequency
treatments ClariVein is:
• Safe, fast & effective procedure with minimal pain
& discomfort
• Negligible bruising, or none at all
• Reduced risks
• No risk of thermal damage from laser or RF energy
• No risk of nerve injury
• No multiple needle sticks injuries
• No internal leg pressure
• A rapid return to normal activities
• Zero risk of thermal injury
This also means the procedure time is quicker as there
are fewer steps.
Clinical Results
The technique is FDA approved and the device CE

ClariVein summary
For 350 years, varicose veins have been treated with a
surgical technique, for 10 years laser and radio
frequency took over, now there’s ClariVein – this is the
future of vein treatment.
It is safe, fast, & effective with greatly
reduced patient pain, discomfort, & bruising.
Dr. Tolitano says, “This treatment isn’t for everybody.
At this point I’m just using it for patients with varicose
veins on their lower legs. However that’s a significant
number of patients. The bottom line is any good vein
clinic will now offer both modalities.” He adds either

the procedure.

To Our Valued Patients;
I am pleased to announce that our offices in Franklin Park have been
accredited by Medicare to provide Durable Medical Equipment (DME) to
Medicare patients. This means that Medicare will cover certain Durable
Medical Equipment, which without this accreditation, would have
required cash payment. The addition of this DME to our current services,
which include chiropractic care, massage therapy, and custom made foot
orthotics, will greatly benefit our Medicare patients.
Working with the patient’s Primary Care Physician to obtain a prescription stating the DME equipment is appropriate, our staff will be able to
further assist patients in leading functional lives. We are excited to have
yet another tool available to further our ability to maximize the progress
of our patients. On our website (in Healthy Hints) is a list of the new DME
products we provide.
Please feel free to discuss this information during your next appointment or
contact our office. Thank you for trusting us with your care. We consider it a
privilege to work with each patient and we look forward to continuing to identify opportunities to ensure that we are able to provide exceptional quality
care to all of our patients.
Respectfully Yours,

How to Create a Strong Password
1. What makes a password strong (or
weak)?
A strong password:
• Is at least eight characters long.
• Does not contain your user name, real
name, or company name.
• Does not contain a complete word.
• Is significantly different from previous
passwords.
• Contains characters from each of the
following four categories: Uppercase letters, Lowercase letters, Numbers, Symbols found on the keyboard (all
keyboard characters not defined as letters or numerals) and spaces
A password might meet all the criteria
above and still be a weak password. For
example, Hello2U! meets all the criteria
for a strong password listed above, but
is still weak because it contains a complete word. H3ll0 2 U! is a stronger
alternative because it replaces some of
the letters in the complete word with
numbers and also includes spaces.
2. Creating stronger passwords using
ASCII characters
You can also create passwords that use
extended ASCII characters. Using
extended ASCII characters helps make
your password more secure by increasing the number of characters you can
choose from to create a strong password. Before using extended ASCII characters in your password, make sure that
passwords containing them are compatible with the programs that are used by
you or your organization. Be especially
cautious about using extended ASCII
characters in passwords if your organization uses several different operating
systems or versions of Windows.

Passwords provide the first line of
defense against unauthorized access to
your computer. The stronger your password, the more protected your computer will be from hackers and malicious
software. You should make sure you
have strong passwords for all accounts
on your computer. If you're using a corporate network, your network administrator might require you to use a strong
password.
9
You can find extended ASCII characters
in Character Map. Some extended ASCII
characters should not be used in passwords. Do not use a character if a keystroke is not defined for it in the
lower-right corner of the Character
Map dialog box.
Windows passwords can be much longer than the eight characters recommended above. In fact, you can make a
password up to 127 characters long.
However, if you are on a network that
also has computers running Windows
95 or Windows 98, consider using a
password that is no longer than 14
characters. If your password is longer
than 14 characters, you might not be
able to log on to your network from
computers running those operating
systems.
By the way, a long password is difficult
to remember. If you forget or lose it,
you will spend a lot of time to recover
windows password or spend money
on windows password recovery software.
3. Help yourself remember your strong
password by following these tips:
• Create an acronym from an easy-toremember piece of information. For
example, pick a phrase that is meaningful to you, such as My son's birthday is
12 December, 2004. Using that phrase
as your guide, you might use
Msbi12/Dec,4 for your password.
• Substitute numbers, symbols, and
misspellings for letters or words in an
easy-to-remember phrase. For example, My son's birthday is 12 December,
2004 could become Mi$un's Brthd8iz
12124 (it's OK to use spaces in your
password).
• Relate your password to a favorite
hobby or sport. For example, I love to
play badminton could become
ILuv2PlayB@dm1nt()n.
If you feel you must write down your
password in order to remember it,
make sure you don't label it as your
password, and keep it in a safe place.

Impact of Eye Health
on Your Overall Health
by Dr Richard Nielson
The health of our eyes is not something
that we think too much of. Many people
will only think of having their eyes
checked when they begin to notice pain
or other symptoms of eye problems.
However, eye care is more important
than we think. Visiting an eye doctor to
ensure that your eyes are in good condition will help you avoid various problems
with your general health.
1. Eye problems can be indications of
other diseases and conditions
Eye problems are often an indication of
poor health. Many disorders and diseases creep up on people. The deterioration of the body can be so gradual that it
goes undetected until it has already progressed too far.
These diseases however are only detectable by an eye doctor during an examination. Problems such as diabetes, high
blood pressure and even cancer are present through the development of eye
problems. Going for an examination may
therefore save your life.
2. Severe headaches
Many people today are prone to developing eye strain as a result of focusing on
small images such as those on your
phone, words in a book or on a computer
screen for too long. Your retina gets tired
focusing on these images and your vision
becomes blurred. Many people develop
severe headaches after straining their
eyes for prolonged periods. This can
interfere with your daily life.
Severe headaches can also result from
other problems such as glaucoma (a con-
dition that results in the buildup of
intraocular pressure) and papilloedema
(swelling of the optic nerve).
3. Neck and shoulder pain
You can develop pain in the shoulders
and in the neck if you have eye problems. This is especially common
amongst people who read, use computers or carry out other intricate work for
extended periods at a time. If you have
to strain to see what you are doing, you
are likely to crane your neck or hunch
your shoulders to get a closer look.
This results in poor posture. Those who
do this for extended periods at a time
will find that they will develop pain in
the neck and shoulders. Some also
develop stiffness in the neck, shoulders
and upper back.
According to studies released at the
National Ergonomics Conference and
Exposition, up to 50% of those suffering
from stiffness and pain in the shoulders
and neck report having eye problems
such as irritation, blurring, strain and
dryness.
4. Back pain
People with eye problems tend to
develop upper back pain resulting from
poor posture when straining to see.
This problem can develop to back problems that are more serious such as
ankylosing spondylitis. This is inflammation of the joints in the spine.
As you can see, eye health is more than
just about eye care. It is also good for
your general well-being.

3 Tips to De-Clutter Your Home
our home's beauty is not measured by its size… at
least not by itself anyway. You could have a fairly
decent sized house but it can look like it's a war zone.
Wouldn't you rather have a good sized house that's
got everything in its place? The choice to do this, of
course, resides with you… and only you!
Remember that your home will speak volumes about
who you are as well as the other folks who live with
you. If people walk into your home and see it resembles a garbage dump, you can be sure that their
impression of you is going to be negative. However, if
you keep a tidy, immaculate house, your visitors will
see you in a positive light. Does this appeal more to
you than the earlier thoughts of you? Then to get it…
you just need a little help to de-clutter your home.
and how much progress you have made on it. This can
certainly be helpful to you since it won't make you feel
overwhelmed by all the tasks you need to do to de-clutter your home. Focus on each individual task, crossing
3 Tips To De-Clutter Your Home and Life Too
Tip 1 - Have A Well-Thought Out Attack Plan
Be sure to have a detailed attack plan to get your
house spotless. This means deciding what part of your
home you will clean first. A home's disaster areas will
vary from every person/family. What you need to do is
decide what rooms are the messiest and focus on
those rooms first. Have a plan that lays out each
room's tasks and estimate the amount of time it'll take
to get those tasks done.
Time frames are important since it'll help to monitor how long you've been spending on a certain task
them off your list as you get them done. When you do
this, you'll feel like you've accomplished something.
Tip 2 - Begin The Clean Up
Now is the time to de-clutter your home, which is
what'll eat up a good chunk of your time. You need to
start by getting things organized. You do this by sorting
out the clutter and grouping things similar to each
other in one pile and/or plastic bins. This means putting clothes with clothes, toys with toys, etc. If you
have things you still want or are able to use, be sure to
leave them in those piles/bins.
However, if you've got clothes you don't want, don't
like, can't wear or are out of date, then take them out.
You can sell them in a garage sale or to a consignment
shop. You can also give them to friends and family or
donate them to a charity. Throw out broken or torn
things.
The way you de-clutter your home will vary in terms
of how quickly they can get done. Some of your plans
to de-clutter your home may take months while others
will take mere days.
Tip 3 - Don't Get Discouraged
It's important to realize that not all your goals to declutter your home will pan out in a short amount of
time. However, you don't need to get discouraged. If
you find yourself heading that way because the job is
just too big (or looks like it), take some time away from
it. Revisit your plans to de-clutter your home and make
some new ones. Don't stop the process of de-cluttering
your home until the results you want are achieved.
Remember, you're the person who lives inside the
home. Do you really want to endure a life of dirtiness
forever? If you don't, then it's time to take action and

Best Abdominal Exercise
Weight problems, lack of muscle tone and rounded
stomachs are common place as we get older. What is
worse, is that even the best abdominal exercises sometimes don't help and we are tempted to put it all down
to just getting older.
If you have lost some weight but can't get rid of the
tummy or you have back pain and feel quite tired all
the time, weak core muscles could be the cause.
Believe it or not, there is an effective abdominal exercise to:
• flatten your stomach
• rediscover your waistline
• strengthen your back
• improve your posture
• improve balance and stamina
The secret is to work on your core muscles
to make them stronger! Anyone can do this
at any age but first we need to look at what
core muscles are.
Like a tree, your core is the trunk and
your arms and legs the branches. If your
• Assistance with Medicaid Eligibility for

core is strong your stomach will be flatter, your posture better, you look 10 pounds lighter and your back
ache may disappear!
To test how strong your core is at the moment try
this little test.
Place an exercise mat on the floor and get down on
all fours. Stretch your legs out behind you and rest
your weight on your fore-arms with your hands clasped
in front of you. Raise your legs and body up into a
straight line from head to heels. With your weight on
your toes and fore-arms and engaging your core muscles, hold the position for as long as you can. Thirty
seconds is quite good and a minute is better.
This exercise is called The Plank and works
multiple muscles at the same
time to strengthen your
back, shoulders, arms, quads and abdominal muscles.
It is also one of the best abdominal exercises because
it improves posture too. Bad posture is one of the
main reasons why even slim people have rounded
stomachs.
Good posture means the core muscles can better
support your inner organs, it also improves digestion,
circulation and breathing. Your pelvic area gets a work
out too, lowering the risk of incontinence, something
we all worry about.
This hugely effective exercise can also be performed
on your side. Rest your weight on the side of one foot
and one fore-arm and raise your body up into a
straight line or plank looking to one side. Make sure
your body is straight from head to feet and don't allow
your body to sag. Keep your core muscles engaged.
Anyone with a health problem or pain should first
consult a doctor before performing these exercises.
My advice is to take things slowly, build your strength
gradually and after a few weeks you will begin to reap
your reward. This is one of the best abdominal exercises I know with the added benefit of strengthening
the whole core leaving you feeling slimmer, stronger
and more energetic!

There are a variety of superstitious traditions that began a long time ago which
have lost their meaning in current day.
Typically these traditions were enacted
to influence the luck you might have
within the coming year. For instance, the
New Years Eve parties that people all
know and love began due to the belief
that what one did on the first day of the
entire year may affect their luck. This is
why parties go past midnight and into
the new year and in addition it explains
why they require lots of family and
friends.
Once the clock strikes midnight it's common for all of us to kiss our loved ones
and make plenty of noise to celebrate
the beginning of a new year. Some of us
simply do this without really considering
it, there's a superstitious reason behind
this. Traditionally, people kissed one another to make sure that the connection
lasted throughout the year plus they
made a large amount of noise because
they believed it would scare the evil spirits away.
Good Reputation for New Year's
Day
once we would expect, it actually started
using the first new moon following the
first day of spring (also called the Vernal
Equinox).
It was not until 153 BC that January was
declared as the start of the year by the
Romans. The month was named after
Janus the mythical god of beginnings. The
twelve months became a lot more like
that utilized in present day in 46 BC when
Julius Caesar established the Julian Calendar. After consultation by having an astronomer he matched the calendar year
with the movement from the sun and
marked January 1 as the start of new
year.
New Year's Resolutions
The popular tradition of creating New
Year's resolutions also offers origins in
Ancient Babylon and Rome. The Babylonians would typically return farm equipment that they had borrowed in the past
year, while in Caesar's time Janus had become the symbol for resolutions while he
had two faces that may look to the past
and into the future.
Today we make New Year's Resolutions
to try to improve some facet of inside us
next season. Popular resolutions include
quitting smoking, losing weight and getting out of debt. This sounds good but
the sad the fact is that many of us break
them prior to the entire year has gone
out. In fact, a recent study found that
22% of people give up their resolution
within the first week. By the end of
March more than half of the people
pledging New Year’s resolutions had fallen from the bandwagon. by John Wayne
The origins of recent Years celebrations
date back 1000's of years. In around 2000
B.C. the Babylonians celebrated the
brand new year over an 11-day period.
This period did not begin on January 1

Preventing a Will Contest & Preserving Peace in the Family
he purpose of writing a Last Will and Testament is to make sure that you – and not an
anonymous probate court judge – have control over the distribution of your property after your
death. If one or more family members disputes the
instructions in your will, however, then it is possible
that a probate court judge may decide how your
assets will be distributed.
Protect yourself, your family members and your last
wishes by taking steps to prevent a will contest after
your death. Will contests (this is the legal term used
to describe a family member’s challenge to the contents of a will) can be based on one or more of these
claims:
• The will was not properly executed
• The will maker was under improper or undue influence from a beneficiary
• The will maker or another person committed fraud
• The will maker lacked the mental capacity to make
the will
help of an estate planning attorney will also ensure
that your will is a properly executed and valid legal
document.
Don’t delay estate planning. Plan your estate while
you are in good health – “of sound mind and body.” If
you create your will while your physical or mental
health is failing, your will becomes vulnerable to
claims that it is invalid due to your lack of mental
capacity.
Consider a no-contest clause. A no-contest clause
(also called an in terroreum clause) in a Last Will and
Testament disinherits anyone who contests the will.
Keep in mind, though, that no-contest clauses are
valid in some states but not in others.
There are a number of steps that you can take to help
prevent will contests based on any of those claims. It
is important to remember, though, that different
states have different laws regarding wills and probate.
What is advisable in one state may be inadvisable in
another, which is why the first suggestion for preventing a will contest is:
Consider using trusts. Trusts are becoming more
widely used in estate planning , and are useful for various situations. A will is a public document once it is
filed in probate court, and the public nature of the
document can give rise to disputes and will contests.
In contrast, a revocable living trust is a personal and
private document that does not have to be filed as a
public record. Furthermore, lifetime trusts can be
used to provide financially for “troublesome” beneficiaries who might otherwise spend through their
inheritance. Lifetime trusts are flexible and can link
financial inheritance to the accomplishment of goals
that you set forth in the trust documents.
Obtain qualified legal advice regarding your estate
plan. Estate planning has become a popular “do it
yourself” legal task, but you should at least consider
having your will reviewed – if not written – by a qualified estate planning lawyer. Writing your will with the
Write your will independently. To avoid claims of
undue influence after your death, make sure you write
your will in circumstances that are clearly free from
interference by family members or other beneficiaries.
Avoid having beneficiaries serve as witnesses, for
example, and don’t allow beneficiaries to attend your
meetings with your estate planning attorney. This is
especially important if you are under the care of a
family member who is also a beneficiary.
Be of sound mind and body. At the time you write
and sign your will, you can ask your physician to perform a physical examination and certify that you are
mentally competent to execute your will. Another
option is for your attorney to ask you a series of questions before you sign your will and document that the
questions were asked and answered. It may also be a
good idea to make a video recording of the process of
signing your will, as another way to prove mental competency.
Answer your family’s questions. Consider sharing
your intentions with your family and other beneficiaries. If you explain the reasons for the decisions you
made regarding bequests, you may help prevent will
contests after your death. Instead or in addition, you
may write a letter to your beneficiaries that will be
read at the same time your will is read.
Keep your will dust-free. Once your Last Will and Testament and other estate planning documents are
complete, don’t just file and forget them. Review your
will with an attorney at least once a year and make
any necessary changes in a timely manner.

While many professionals are able to
advise a senior about estate planning
and asset management, they do not
provide the senior with the daily management of financial affairs and related
domestic matters. Everyone needs to
pay bills regularly, maintain bank
accounts, be aware of changes in
healthcare coverage, remain on a budget, and face numerous other financialrelated issues, or they may have to face
bitter consequences that could include
eviction, utility cutoffs, or loss of healthcare coverage.
Family members, usually adult children
who take on the role of the parent,
often step in at the beginning to perform domestic tasks for their senior
loved ones. This informal model of
money management assistance can
work well depending on the availability
of the family members and the difficulty
of the overall financial picture. Over
time, it may become overwhelming,
require too much of a family member’s
time, or it may make sense to have a
neutral party oversee the finances. At
that point, it may be time to hire professional help.
Maintaining Independence
A relatively new approach for seniors
and their families is to enlist a daily
money manager. When working with a
daily money manager, the senior and
the involved family members remain in
complete control of their finances. At
the same time, on a regular basis, they
receive support in managing and organizing the day-to-day financial responsibilities of a household and the senior
individual. Often, a daily money manager will come into the home and assist
a senior with organizing mail and paperwork, paying bills, reviewing medical
claims, negotiating with creditors, reconciling credit card statements, and
more. Ultimately, the daily money manager provides a comprehensive
approach to managing the household’s
paperwork and keeping the senior as
independent as possible.
will spend the time on the phone for correction rather than you.
A bill payer – Organizes the bills and
reminds the senior when to pay each bill,
or the daily money manager may have
authorization to pay the bills from the
senior’s bank account.
When a daily money manager is invited
into someone’s home to help him or
her with money matters, that daily
money manager will get a comprehensive look at the senior’s life. The nature
of the job of a daily money manager is
one that lends itself to monitoring
theoverall well-being of the senior client as well as their finances. Therefore,
the daily money manager will assist the
individual with legal matters, household
issues, benefits and insurance concerns,
and much more.

Slow Down
As a Gift to Your Aging Parents
Hey there busy Boomer.. GenX'er: What would
you think of giving your aging parents a gift that
costs you absolutely nothing except a little more
of your time? Would that fit your budget? More
importantly, would it fit your lifestyle?
- What, from among all your many commitments
and over-commitments, could you cut back in
order to free up extra time on a regular basis for
the two people whose time is far more limited
than even yours (over the long stretch)?
What is it, you ask. Are you sure you're ready?
It's a commitment on your part - signed, sealed,
and delivered... not just some flimsily-wrapped
agreement - to slow down with, around, and for
your aging parents.
- How much would you lose (versus how much
could you gain) if you dropped just one outside
involvement in order to get more involved with
your aging parents? (Remember, spending your
time with them fidgeting and looking at your
watch as if something more pressing were waiting doesn't count!)
Slow Down!
Sure, your busy midlife existence runs at high
speed and overdrive every minute you're not
sleeping - and you probably give that sleeping
part far less time than it deserves. This season,
though, try giving yourself AND your aging parents the gift of your slowing down - even
slightly. Consider it an exercise in seeing how
much you've been missing.
Don't jump at this too quickly. I mean, you
wouldn't want to overdo.
Just think for a moment, though:
- When was the last time you told your elderly
mother or father to take as long as they needed
because you'd be happy to wait... and then you
WERE happy to wait?
- What kind of response do you imagine you'd
get from your elderly parents if you said there
was no rush, that you had all the time in the
world - for them... and then took off your coat
and settled in for whatever it was they had in
mind?
- How would your aging parents respond if you
showed up out of the blue to take them for a
long, slow drive to someplace - or to see someone - you never seem to have time to visit?
The astonishment factor would probably be
enough to create something cataclysmic! And,
wouldn't that be great?!
Do you see where I'm going here? Shifting gear
matters - to both of you!
Life moves far too quickly without our speeding
it up unnecessarily. And, believe it or not, it's
going even faster for your aging parents.
I know, you think they're slowing down.. and
they are.. on the outside. But by their internal
clocks, time is rushing by. They can't control it.
They can just try to keep up.
At this point in your life, you're just the opposite.
Your internal clock is still keeping a slower, more
steady beat. On the outside, though, the
demands on your time keep you zipping at ever
increasing speeds.
The challenge for you, if you choose to accept it,
my midlife friend, is to consciously shift gears
and slow down enough to match your parents'
external pace - even every so often. This gift to
them would be incredible!
Do you have it in you? I'm betting you do. And
just think: In the long run, the rewards far outweigh the costs. What more could an adult child
of aging parents ask the perfect gift to do? I'll let
you decide.

8 Ways to Truly Love Your Body RIGHT NOW !
o be honest, I'm breathing a sigh
of relief that summer is in the
rearview mirror. While I love the
easy-breezy feel and long days, I'd get
pangs of anxiety about having to reveal my
vampire white, tree trunk-type legs and
"bat wings" because of my skimpier wardrobe. Now that fall is here, I can better hide
my imperfections under my curvy boot cut
jeans and sweaters and not feel so painstakingly self-conscious.
None of my friends would actually know
that I worry about this, and truth be told I'd
be kind of embarrassed to tell them. Objectively speaking, I probably come across as a
relatively confident person who doesn't
seem super-concerned about my appearance (e.g. I'm usually dressed casually without a lot of makeup and my hair thrown up
in a bun). And I don't discuss weight that
often, because I don't like to showcase my
insecurities and flaws, but WOW, do I
secretly get down in the dumps about the
way my body looks and feels sometimes.
In the grand scheme of things, I know that
it doesn't matter whether you're a size 2 or
20 as long as you're healthy, but sometimes
I wish that my body type was different.
Whenever I see a woman with a long, lean
body I get sort of envious about how great
she looks in EVERYTHING, and annoyed that I'm naturally
kind of short and stocky. There's only so much you can
change with diet and exercise.
Then I snap back to reality, scoff at my vanity and think
about the 'big picture' of how lucky I am to be healthy. Yet
despite this outlook, I still find myself muttering horrible
things to myself about my appearance in the mirror.
I didn't quite realize how self-critical I was being until my
5-year-old daughter started repeating my comments aloud
(and in front of my husband, no less!). I was horrified, not
just because of the bad example I've been setting for my
daughter, but because she'll realize what a hypocrite I am.
Since birth, I've been telling her how perfect she is and
how she should love herself, while I'm busy tossing clothes
around my bedroom screaming, "I'm too fat to wear this!"
Recently, a Tumblr blog went viral that was a reminder
to love and embrace your body, no matter what size you
are, as long as you're healthy. Brittany Miles battled and
overcame an eating disorder, and her path to self-acceptance and perspective on weight is refreshing. In celebration of her positive attitude about body image, I spoke
with Maria Bucaro, author of Love Your Body Now! Lose
The Weight of Self-Hate Gain the Yummy-ness of Goddessness about eight key steps you can take toward appreciating and respecting your body RIGHT NOW.
tion," says Bucaro. The question can be,
“What do I want to eat? Do I want
another glass of wine? What kind of
movement do I want to do today?'
"This really works and it might take a
little time to hear what the body is saying, mostly because that little voice that
we all have is trying to override what
the body is really saying. Be still and listen."
5. Physically love your body. Your body
is filled with pleasure centers. We often
focus on the pain, or what is feeling
unpleasant. "Begin to focus on what
feels good and your body will respond,"
suggests Bucaro. Rub your eyes, stroke
your hands, caress your belly (yes, even
the rolls!) or whatever feels good for
you. At the same time, talk to your
body, expressing gratitude for all that it
does for you.
you can support each other in feeling good." Focus on
what you do want and you'll get more of that in your
life. Bucaro just completed 100 days of celebrating loving her body along with some other women. She also
has a Facebook group where you can get inspired and
support each other in body image issues.
2. Assume responsibility for everything that is going on
in your reality right now. When you do, then you have
the power to alter your reality by changing your
thoughts. No one's opinion matters. Only your opinion
matters, which means you get to decide what is beautiful. You get to choose how you see yourself. "If you
want to see yourself as beautiful, then consciously
begin to see yourself as you want to be," advises
Bucaro. "Begin creating the beauty you truly want by
holding the intention of beauty, knowing that you are
beautiful right now."
3. Be kind to yourself and your body. Treat yourself
like you would treat your best friend. It is not about
punishing yourself with physical exercise for the sake
of losing weight. It is not about lifting weights and suffering. There is nothing wrong with lifting weights or
going out for a run, if you're happy to do it. It's about
what feels good and is joyful. Your body is craving
movement, not punishment. Your body is craving love,
not battle. Treat your body well. Explore what you love
to do. For example, Bucaro loves to swim, ride her bike
and take nature walks. Think about what turns you on
and lights you up... and go do it.
1. Stop talking about dieting, getting "stuff" done to your
body and all around complaining about how you don't like
what you see in the mirror. Stop thinking about it, stop
talking about it with other people and especially stop talking about it with yourself. "Talking about what you don't
want just keeps getting you more of what you don't want,"
explains Bucaro. "Start talking about what you like about
4. Listen to your body. It knows what it wants. "Someyour body, what makes you feel good and ask a friend how times in order to hear my body, I need to ask it a ques-
6. Before you get out of bed in the
morning, choose one thing each day
that you love about your body. Is it your
eyes? Your shoulders? Your hips? Your
lips? What do you love about your
body? Love it right now. "Exaggerate
how much you love it -- go on, no one is
watching ( and if they are, who cares!)," says
Bucaro. "Throughout the day, think about the part
that you love, and when you use that part and
appreciate it, do the happy dance!"
7. Jiggle the jiggle or whatever you find disturbing
about your body. Have fun with your body and love
it. In other words, lighten up! "This is something
we do in the Love Your Body Now workshops and
it's amazing how powerful this is," explains Bucaro.
Put some music on, and look at what you don't
like. Now turn it around and make it your friend.
Big nose? Wrinkles? Fat? Weird toes? Dance with
it, laugh with it and have fun. It's the only body
you've got, so enjoy it and be kind! "If you want to
take it to the next level, do it with a friend," suggests Bucaro. "BUT make sure it's a loving and supportive friend who understands what you're
doing."
8. Gratitude. Think about all of the things that your
body is doing right now, without you even having
to think about it. Blood is being pumped and oxygenated, waste is being taken care of, food is being
digested, breathing in and out without stopping,
even when you're asleep (and so much more!).
"Arms hug, legs carry you to loved ones, lips kiss
and smiles can change a life," Bucaro reminds us.
"Heart opens, hands hold and caress and comfort,
eyes look into your loved ones soul. Ears hear the
music of your baby's giggle and the music of a symphony. You're a part of that symphony of life.
Express gratitude for yourself, your life (whatever it
may look like), and for those around you."

5 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET WARM
W
inter can be a harrowing time
for a pet's health if certain precautions aren't taken. Illness
and worse are just a few minor mistakes
away. Take our five best tips for managing your pet's well being and make sure
that you keep veterinary calls at a minimum this winter season.
We're rounding the seasonal corner into
the winter months. With the winter
come the usual maladies like sniffles, flu
and colds that are expected for humans;
however, winter is especially a tough
time for pets that spend any regular
amount of time outside. How can an
owner effectively protect their pet from
the harsher climate without compromising normal behaviors such as regular
walks and outdoor independence?
Few people realize this, but winter has
the same impact on our pets that it does
to humans. A coat of fur can only do so
much; precautions must be taken to
protect the health and well being of
your best friends in the chilly winter
months ahead. To avoid a trip to the
veterinarian, the following are some
points and precautions a responsible pet
owner should make for ensuring health
in low temperatures.
Age
A pet's age is a definite deal-breaker
on the extent and frequency that they
should be allowed outdoors in cold
weather. Especially young dogs and
cats should not be kept outside for
extended periods of time. Also,
elderly pets are equally vulnerable in
the cold. Young and old pets do not
have the required body fat, metabolism speed, and fur to be properly
protected in low temperatures; they
should be kept inside for their own
good.
Clothing
Pet clothing is adorable, right? A
puppy wrapped up snug in a miniature Bill Cosby sweater? Awww. But,
be responsible with it. While clothing
is a popular way of warming up your
pets in cold temperature, it is counter-effective if utilized incorrectly. If a
piece of clothing becomes wet,
remove it. Wet clothing is as counterproductive for an animal as it is for a
human. Also, pet clothing will not
make the weather more bearable for
elderly or young pets. Pet clothing is
for pets of a healthy outdoor age, and
is not a suitable substitute for a full
coat of fur or insulating body fat.
Foresight
Aside from the cold, there are certain
other seasonal behaviors that a pet
owner should look out for. Always
know where your pet is and what they
are doing. Underneath a car is a popular place for cats to hide in cold
months. The lack of frost and the
warmth above is most appealing.
Always check under your car and
maybe even honk the horn a few
times to scare any hiding animals
away. Also, spilled antifreeze should
be cleaned up immediately. Its sticky
sweetness will be alluring to animals
that could seriously poison themselves by attempting to eat it. If your
pet does ingest antifreeze or any similar chemical, veterinary attention
should be taken immediately. Take
your pet to the nearest animal hospital; it doesn't take very much to be a
fatal dose.

Treatment
This brings us to treatment. If your pet
experiences a negative reaction to the
cold (stiff muscles, weak appetite, shivering, lethargy), there are some quick measures you can take. Bring the pet into a
warm room and wrap them with dry,
warm blankets or towels. Rest a warm
water bottle, wrapped in a towel, at their
abdomen, and immediately call the veterinarian. A vet will be best able to tell
you the next course of action and if you
should risk traveling to a vet clinic.
Empathy
Above all, have empathy for your
pet. The best rule of thumb is that if
the weather is too cold for you,
chances are it's too cold for your pet
in extended exposures. Give them a
safe spot in the home, hallway, or
well insulated garage to retreat to
during extreme temperatures, and
your pet should stay healthy and
incident free during periods of cold.

New Year All Around the World
GERMANY: New Year's Eve in Germany is a
rather quiet affair compared to many other
nations. It is a time for family gatherings
and parties tend to be low-key, consisting
of relatives and close friends. At midnight,
a toast is customarily made with champagne or Sekt and everyone says, "Prosit
Neujahr!. Often, there are firework displays
which people usually watch from the windows of their homes.
One popular custom is Bleigiessen, where
a candle is lit and small chunks of lead are
melted in a spoon held over the candle.
The molten lead is then quickly dropped
into cold water, whereupon it hardens
almost immediately. Each person then tries
to determine what he or she "sees" in the
hardened lead figure in an attempt to tell
the future from the shape which forms.
Often, the lead figure is held up to the candle or other light in order to better discern

AUSTRIA, POLAND & SWITZERLAND:
New Year's Eve is known as the Eve of
Saint Sylvester or Sylvesterabend.
According to legend, Saint Sylvester
(or, according to Polish lore, Pope Sylvester) slew an evil monster-dragon
known as the Leviathon in 1000 A.D.,
the year widely predicted at that time
to be Judgment Day. The Leviathon
was supposed to rise, devour the land
and the people and set fire to the
heavens. He did rise and was vanquished. The Leviathon, a serpentdragon with shiny scales who fed on
other dragons, was so large that its
multicolored coils encircled the Earth.
In Switzerland, the people parade
through the streets dressed in costumes and hats, representative of
good and evil spirits.
HONG KONG: The
people in Hong
Kong are not
allowed to set off
real firecrackers at
the New Year. Instead, they use plastic
firecrackers as decorations. Most people
favor red as the color for clothing and decorations since it is associated with joy and
happiness. Lucky money is distributed in
red envelopes with the family name and a
good luck message written in gold. These
are given on by relatives to the children of
the family and any unmarried members
only. The New Year feast is always a large
one for the first day of the year.
HUNGARY: Effigies of a scapegoat known
as "Jack Straw" are burned. These effigies
represent the evils and misfortunes of the
past year. "Jack Straw" is carried around
the village before being committed to the
flames.
INDIA: The basis for the Indian New Year is
a classic tale of good conquering evil.
When Prince Rama, rightful heir to his
father's throne, was banished to the forest
for 14 years by his wicked stepmother,
Rama's wife was kidnapped by the evil
Demon King Ravan, ruler of a neighboring
land. A battle ensued and Rama, aided by
the monkey warrior Hanuma, rescued his
wife, defeated Ravan and returned to his
kingdom to reclaim his throne. In celebration of Rama's victory, people feasted and
lit oil lamps in their homes. Such was the
first Indian New Year celebration known as
Diwali, meaning "Row of Lights."
Today, the festival falls in late October or
early November and is celebrated according to regional customs. In Northern India,
for example, every town and village glows
with thousands of lights and homes are
decorated with little oil lamps called diwa,
intended to drive out evil and replace it
with goodness. People try to complete any
unfinished work since Diwali marks the end
of the year. Businesses pay off all debts
and new account books are blessed before
the New Year. People buy new things for
their homes, or purchase new tools or
even new clothes. Cards and gifts are
exchanged, New Year resolutions are made
and all quarrels are forgiven and forgotten,
since this is a time of year to be happy
and generous. Even the animals who
have been worked are washed, groomed
and decorated for the festival.
NETHERLANDS: In the Netherlands, people burn Christmas trees on street bonfires and hold firework displays to herald
in the New Year. This practice is also considered to be a means of driving away the
spirits of the old year. Many cultures
believe that anything in the shape of a
ring symbolizes good luck, since it is indicative of "coming full circle" and thus completing the cycle of a year. For this
reason, the Dutch often eat donuts on
New Year's Day to ensure good fortune
for the coming year.
PORTUGAL AND SPAIN: The people of
the Iberian Peninsula pick and eat twelve
grapes from a bunch just as the clock
strikes twelve on New Year's Eve. This
tradition is said to ensure twelve happy
months in the coming year.
SOUTH AFRICA: In South Africa, church
bells ring in the New Year and gunshots
are fired. In the Cape Province area, New
Year's Day and Second New Year's Day
are celebrated with a carnival atmosphere with people dressing in colorful
costumes and dancing in the streets to
the sound of drums.
THAILAND: The Thai New Year festival is
called Songkran and lasts for three days
from April 13th until April 15th, according
to the Gregorian Calendar. There are
many customs associated with the New
Year celebrations. For example, people
douse each other with perfumed water
to symbolize cleansing and renewal and
the hope that it will bring good rains in
the coming year. All the statues and
images of Buddha are washed and monasteries are visited in order to pray and
offer gifts of rice, fruits, sweets and other
foods to the monks.

Motivation
to Eat
SUPER FOODS
by James Albrecht
The motivations for including super foods in your diet
are manifestations of the realization you need to eat
food for the health of your body not for convenience
nor from the habits you have developed over a lifetime. The first step needs to be a desire to understand
how the food you normally eat affects your health. A
health crisis is often the motivation to examine the
dietary choices you make every day.
The media has stories everyday regarding the obesity
epidemic in this country. Development of diabetes,
heart disease and cancer will shock most people into
rethinking what they are eating every day. Obviously
the diets of many people in this country are not based
on sound nutrition, are not balanced, are not nutrient
rich, are chosen to promote health. The most advertised food choices are based on convenience; taste and
promoting highly processed factory foods full of fat and
sugar.
The endless television ads promoting fast food, ready
to eat meals, salty snacks, processed foods, high sugar
cereals, processed meat products, high carbohydrate
foods and sugar based beverages influence millions of
people to eat an unhealthy diet. Ads promote foods
based on convenience. Beautiful enhanced images of
delicious appearing low nutrient high calorie food sell
people on a high calorie low nutrient diet.
I am often amazed at what I see in people's carts at
the supermarket. Boxes of frozen pizzas, processed
meats, prepared meals, sugar soda, salty snacks, and
sugar cereals fill the cart. There are no fresh vegetables
of any kind in the cart.
Unless people make decisions to educate themselves
on the food value of the items in their cart they are on
a collision course to obesity and bad health. Children
who are fed this type of food and eat fast food weekly
are on the road to becoming obesity statistics. As these
children grow they continue to eat the same type of
food and carry these dietary habits to adulthood.
If there is no motivation to make food choices based
on the proper nutritional needs of the body a person
will be unlikely to be interested in super foods.
One the main benefits of basing your diet on foods
from the list of super foods is weight loss. Super foods
are defined as foods high in nutrients and vitamins and
low in calories. To lose weight you need to eat a balanced nutrient rich, low caloric diet. So choosing foods
with the highest nutrient value per calorie is the fastest way to getting to the target weight.
Introducing super foods into your diet will allow you
to replace the high calorie low nutrient foods gradually, making the process simple and easy to accomplish. Conventional wisdom says it takes 28 days of
repeating an action for it to become a habit. To train
yourself to adopt new eating habits is going to take
some time and determination. If you have been eating the same way for years or decades they are habits
not easy to break.
Making a gradual switch with realistic planning and
setting attainable goals will more likely result in success.
A gradual cutting back of sugar is the important first
step. Starting a food log and writing down what and
how much you eat every meal will help you understand where important changes can be made in your
diet.
Consulting with your doctor is a good step. This may
be the reason why many people make the decision to
take control of their diet and food choices. If you
have been told you are diabetic or are developing
type II diabetes, the doctor has hopefully talked to
you about losing weight and watching what you eat.
Unfortunately, many doctors rely more on a pharmaceutical approach and less on stressing the importance of changing the diet. Continuing with the same
diet that brought you to be diabetic and adding drugs
to treat the disease without a fundamental change in
your diet is the wrong approach in my opinion. They
are many doctors, nutritionists, and former type II
diabetics who endorse diet as a means to reversing
the disease. A diet based on super foods will promote
the development of your immunity cells.
The keys are education, commitment and implementation of a plan to eat a diet based on foods to
promote your health and eliminate those low nutrient, high sugar, highly processed foods.
So choose super foods to be the base of your everyday diet. The list below are basic super foods to plan
your menus around.
Leafy green vegetables of all kinds • Legumes of all
kinds • Sweet potatoes • Cruciform vegetables
Berries of all kinds • Nuts and Seeds • Coconuts
Cinnamon • Avocado • Spirulina • Cacao • Green Tea
SUPER FOODS
SESAME SEEDS
These overlooked little seeds
should be making a comeback in
your pantry this year due to their
high levels of calcium and zinc
(almost 20% of your daily dose of
each). One small study found that
sesame seed consumption helped
with improving lipid and glucose profiles in pre-diabetic
patients, and a 2010 study reported similar findings in
an animal model.
BELUGA LENTILS
Expect to see plenty of lentil dishes
on the menu this year. What’s so
great about them? How about
everything? Several studies have
pointed out the benefits of legume
consumption on prevention and
management of chronic disease,
but it’s beluga lentils rich black color that give it an edge
on other lentils. Any time we have a very rich color in a
fruit, vegetable, or even a bean, the more color, the
more benefit to your health. Black anthocyanins in these
little beads have been found in other foods to be tops in
fighting inflammation, cancer and heart disease.
AVOCADO OIL
Avocado oil is often hailed for its high content of healthy monounsaturated fats, yet
many of us shy away from it because
we’re not sure how to cook with it.
While chefs across the nation
will be using it in your pricey
restaurant entrées, you can use
it at home in dressings, dips, and
marinades. Added benefit:
consuming more of it may help to increase your healthy
HDL cholesterol levels.

BLACK SOYBEANS
Expect this bean to
become more mainstream in 2015 as a
potential weight loss
food: A 2007 study
found black soybeans to have an “antiobesity” effect in rats.
COFFEE
For whatever reason,
there’s this perception that coffee is bad
for us. But coffee is
actually the greatest
source of antioxidants
worldwide. A few of
its impressive acts:
coffee helps prevent diabetes and certain
cancers, strengthens DNA, is great for skin,
and lowers early risk of death.
BEET JUICE
This year will see a continued emergence of health
drinks galore. In your
quest to find the one
that works for you, give
beet juice a try. It's been
found in several studies to
promote brain health,
lower blood pressure, and even enhance
athletic performance.
SHICHIMI
TOGARASHI
This Japanese spice
will be hot in 2015—
literally! Shichimi Togarashi is a blend of
seven different spices
and often includes
chili powder, orange
or tangerine peel,
black and white sesame seeds and seaweed. What does it not have? Salt! Not
only will this up-and-comer be a new spice
in the ethnic cuisine trend, it can serve as
an option for great taste (on fish, chicken,
noodles, etc.) without the salt. Further,
with its antioxidant rich ingredients, this
mix may play a role in lowering your risk
for high blood pressure and heart disease.
RICOTTA
Cheese has always
been a popular staple in the American
diet, but the spreadable cheeses often
get overlooked as
options in recipes.
Enter ricotta, the
gritty white cheese that may in fact be
"whey" better than some other options.
Why? Because it’s packed with protein,
something that studies tell us is very
important in keeping muscle up while losing weight. Further, protein specifically
from dairy was found to be protective of
bone health in women trying to shed
pounds.

TEMPEH
Prepare yourself: 2015
will be the year of the
gut. While historical
evidence has linked
harmful gut bacteria to
everything from
increasing diabetes risk to the formation
of autoimmune diseases, healthy gut
bacteria are now being hailed as a possible solution in disease prevention. Probiotics in fermented foods can help with

The
Basics of a Pre Diabetes Diet Plan
A pre diabetes diet plan can be part of
the treatment for pre diabetes, a prior
stage of diabetes mellitus type 2. With
proper exercise, this diet can also be a
diet that can help in preventing diabetes. In pre diabetes, the blood sugar
levels are high but are not high enough
to be considered as diabetes, which is
why it allows for type 2 diabetes to be
prevented.
What are the basics of a pre diabetes
diet plan? Here are a few basics.
1. Lessen your amount of carbohydrates
To help you in your diet, lower your
intake of carbohydrates especially simple carbohydrates because they lead to
overeating, cravings, and weight gain in
most instances. Simple carbohydrates
can be found in refined sugars.
On the other hand, there are complex
carbohydrates that can help lose
weight because they are digested more
slowly. As a result, one would have a
more steady source of energy and feel
fuller for a longer period. Choose the
complex carbs over the simple carbs.
You can do so by eating whole wheat
bread, brown rice, skim milk, soy milk,
and bran products.
2. Eat fruits and vegetables
Fresh fruits and vegetables can do a lot
of wonders to the body. They contain a
lot of vitamins and minerals. Some
even have high amounts of complex
carbohydrates such as apples, pears,
and oranges.
Fresh fruits are also fibrous, which
means they can help in improving

digestion and stabilizing blood sugar levels.
Vegetables, especially green and leafy
ones, are also helpful in improving the
body. Thus, eat more broccoli, green
beams, spinach, and carrots.
3. Choose low fat protein sources
As for your source of protein, choose lean
meat and fishes. If you want beef and pork,
choose the lean cuts such as sirloin.
Remove the skins of chicken and turkey if
you want to eat them.
It is also important to avoid eating too
much fried foods. Should you need to use
oil, choose liquid vegetable oils and healthy
oils such as olive oil.
If you keep in mind these three basic
reminders on a pre diabetes diet plan and
regularly exercise, then you'll have greater
chances of avoiding type 2 diabetes.
