While many people are busy preparing for the upcoming holidays, Ireland Gannon Associates is busy preparing for the
Spring Flower Show at Macy’s in NYC. Ken Muellers has been the principal designer for the Broadway windows for the
last eight years. He also coordinates the in-store gardens in the Herald Square store and the shows in Chicago and Washington, D.C. Ireland Gannon Associates, the landscape division of Martin Viette Nurseries, has been involved in the design and
installation of the Macy’s Flower Show for over 25 years.
Ken writes “The Garden Spot,” a regular column in HOUSE magazine, and is a CNLP and ISA Certified Arborist. Come
listen to Ken as he gives us a behind-the-scenes look into producing this spectacular display, including a sneak peek at what
is in store for 2015.
HOLIDAY CHINESE AUCTION
A Chinese auction is a form of raffle. When you purchase your raffle tickets, you will get both halves. Place one half
of each ticket into the bags in front of the prizes you’d like to win. Keep the other half. When the drawing starts, if one of
your numbers is called, take your ticket with you to retrieve your prize.
For the Chinese auction, ticket prices will differ from our regular monthly raffle.

We have received a lot of wonderful donated prizes, with values up to $450! They include gift baskets, decorative
items, jewelry, gift certificates, and more. The proceeds from the Chinese auction go to our scholarship fund, so please
buy lots of tickets!

President’s Message
Dear Members,
Elections are over and I want to
welcome Patricia Sayers to our board
in the position of Treasurer. Pat is a daylily hybridizer, and was very involved
in the Daylily Society, so she joins our
board with administrative expertise. I
also want to welcome Sharon Rubin
to the board as a new director. We are
always looking for new people to serve
on our board, and volunteer for things,
so if you would like to get involved,
please talk to me about your interests.
2014 has brought many changes to
the LI Horticultural Society. In January
we implemented a new meeting format,
with a start time of 1:30 PM, and only
one speaker and a (slightly) shorter
meeting. I, personally, have not heard
any negative feedback from this arrangement, and we will continue with
this format into 2015.
Also in April of 2014, the society
participated in a Home and Garden
Expo at the Nassau Coliseum which
resulted in 14 new members joining
our group. A special thank you goes to
Bruce Hambrecht for providing the
set up materials, creating our booth,
and breaking it down when the weekend was over. Bruce also set our booth
up in early October at the Cradle of
Aviation Museum at a flower show, but
unfortunately that show was not well
attended. But I appreciate the effort, so
thank you Bruce, and those members
who staffed the booth, for spending

We have created a marketing committee, headed by Barbara Loechner,
who has also been busy organizing our
December holiday party (which she ran
last year as well). We will have a Chinese auction, as well as singing elves.
And this year we celebrate the society’s
80th birthday!
Thanks to Barbara, we have received more publicity than ever before,
which is always a good thing. Jo Borut
has also added to our presence, by writing several articles for the Anton Press
and mentioning our name and meeting
dates to encourage people to come to
our meetings.
Another change is coming this January, 2015: we will no longer be mailing the newsletter out to our members.
The newsletter is available on www.
lihort.org each month, and you will
continue to receive an email to let you
know when the latest one is available
to read. That is why it is so important to
provide Nanci Allen with your current
email address. We promise not to give
it out to those ‘spam’ generators; it will
only be used for club business, including notification of trips, open garden
days and events and activities at other
garden venues, such as Farmingdale
College.

IT’S TIME TO RENEW your LIHS membership for
2015. At $25 per individual or family, it is the best bargain

that include informative education programs packed with
knowledge and inspiration, followed by a hospitality hour.
Almost every meeting includes a Horticultural Competition,
a raffle, our spring plant sale, and refreshments. We also
offer you 11 issues of our monthly newsletter to keep you
up to date with LIHS activities and horticultural news, and
discounts to select nurseries. In addition, there are trips to
local private and public gardens and well-regarded nurseries,
and on occasional, national and international trips to famous
garden locales.
Best of all, there is the warm fellowship of those who
are passionate about plants and gardening. But you already
know that! So spread the cheer, give the gift of gardening

Our Gardens of Shropshire tour, June 4-12, 2015, is now
sold out, but we are still accepting names for the waiting list.
Two highlights of the trip will be visits to the world-famous
David Austin Rose Garden, and Wollerton Old Hall Garden,
thought by many to be the best garden in England.
The cost of the trip is $1,998. This includes a shared
twin room for 8 nights, all meals, and all other expenses,
including gratuities. Transatlantic airfare is not included. If
you are traveling solo, we will try to provide a roommate for
you. If we can’t, you will be assigned a single room at no
