The Edward Payson Vining Rare Book Collection
Tuesday, April 14
Doyle New York is honored to offer the Edward Payson Vining Rare Book Collection, the property of Gordon
College, Wenham, Massachusetts. Vining (1847-1920) was a successful businessman who retired in early middle
age to devote himself to the study of Shakespeare, early American history and related topics. He was a prodigious
collector of books relating to his many interests. Upon his death, his collection was donated to what was then
the Gordon College of Theology and Missions. The selection is exceptionally rich in early travels and voyages,
Shakespeariana, material relating to linguistics and philology, and Americana, among other fields. Most notably
it includes copies of the first and second Bibles in the Massachusett language, 1663 and 1685 respectively,
which were painstakingly translated into that language over a fourteen-year period. Both editions were printed in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the 1663 edition is the first Bible in any language to be printed in North America.

Impressionist
& Modern Art
Post-War &
Contemporary Art
Tuesday, May 5
Tuesday, May 12
The May 5 sale presents works by
European and American artists
ranging from Academic and
Barbizon art through Impressionism
and Post-Impressionism to early
Modernism.
The May 12 auction offers works by European, American,
Latin American and Asian artists representing artistic
movements ranging from Abstract Expressionism through
21st century Contemporary works and Street Art.
Sale highlights include a large-scale abstraction by Paul Jenkins
from 1985 titled Phenomena Terrestrial Signals (see front cover).
Very much a part of the Abstract Expressionist generation
of artists, Jenkins is often differentiated because of the beauty
of his works. He is also slightly apart from the stain painters,
as he chose to work on primed rather than raw canvas. The
rich colors of his canvases were poured and manipulated
using a bone knife, thus melding control with chance. The
result of this technique in his experienced hands delivers
works of art that have an organic balance and spiritual quality.
A delightful double-sided drawing
by American artist John Singer
Sargent (1856-1925) is a study for
one of his best-loved oils, Carnation,
Lily, Lily, Rose, in the collection of
London’s Tate Gallery. Believed to
be the last study for the painting
in private hands, it depicts the two
young daughters of the illustrator
Frederick Barnard, on verso and
recto, holding paper lanterns. The
title of the painting was inspired by
a popular song, Ye Shepherds Tell
Me, which mentions Flora wearing
“A wreath around her head, around
her head she wore, Carnation, lily,
lily, rose.”
Norwegian artist Frits (Johan
Frederik) Thaulow (1847-1906) is
represented by a masterful waterside
view. During the 1890s, Thaulow
often traveled and worked in
Normandy, especially in the villages
and countryside along the Arques
River near the English Channel port
of Dieppe. This beguiling view of a
farmstead on the Arques is a superb
example of Thaulow’s best work of
this period, showing his characteristic
effects of light and water reflection
with particular brilliance.

The Estate of Erica Lemle Amsterdam offers a selection of metal
sculpture by Harry Bertoia. The forms of the artist’s mature
sculpture include biomorphic shapes, as seen in Bush, and
linear, symmetrical objects, such as Dandelion, each reflecting
an organic theme derived from nature. The Estate of
Erica Lemle Amsterdam also includes a collection
of French Art Nouveau cameo glass to be
