The elite singing ensemble from San Marcos

Henry Dubroff
Perspectives on the Regional Economy
Harry Brown introduced our speaker: Henry Dubroff, the
Chairman and Editor of the Pacific Coast Business Times,
which he founded in 1999. The Business Times is a weekly
business journal for Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis
Obispo Counties. Henry and the Business Times have won
many awards for excellence in reporting.
Henry is a past President of the Society of Business Editors
and Writers and serves on the board of a number of
organizations, including the UCSB Economic Project. He
received his undergraduate degree from Lafayette Collage
and has a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia
University.
Mr. Dubroff provided an interesting discussion of the
business climate in the region. His weekly newspaper
reports on business news including trends, start-ups,
successes and failures in the geographic area from
Westlake Village to San Luis Obispo. He noted that business
journals are traditionally found in major cities across the
country but he chose to locate his in the tri-county area
as it offers a unique set of business interests not common
to, thus not supported by, the nearby large-city business
journals.
Business journals provide readers with in-depth stories
that can no longer be found in daily newspapers. The
contributors have the time to research and flesh-out their
stories, even to the point of fact-checking, (something that
seems to be missing in our dailies).
With the daily news stories seemingly about immigration
and integration, Mr. Dubroff points out that the economy
outweigh these concerns in polls across the country.
He spoke to the changes, not only in the way businesses
must embrace to be successful, but to the big change in
PAGE 4
CRACKERS
how reporters’ career paths have changed dramatically
during the past few years. He attributed much of this
change to the emergence of the internet. Not that
long ago, reporters would begin their careers at a
low-responsibility job at a small town paper, growing
gradually to more responsible positions with ever larger
markets. Currently, social media, blogs, and the internet
itself have created significant changes to the traditional
growth path for journalistic reporting.
Our area’s biggest business interests are agro-business
and technology. Mr. Dubroff discussed several of the
individual businesses in these fields. Wine grapes, for
example, have become a serious revenue producer
in not only our local area but state-wide and beyond.
Semiconductors, high-tech manufacturing, and medical
specialty items round out the technology markets.
Supporting tourism has been an important source of
revenue in the area and Mr. Dubroff believes that this will
increase substantially during the coming years. China,
in particular, has 200 million people who have enough
disposable income to travel to California’s coast and
many will choose to do that. China has now eclipsed
Europe as the largest geographical region from which
we are seeing tourist visits. With Disneyland and San
Francisco providing focal points, the wine producing
areas in-between will benefit as well.
Mr. Dubroff pointed out that home-ownership is decreasing,
with individuals renting living space becoming more
prevalent. This is of interest, not only because of the
obvious effect to realty revenues, but to small business
start-ups. Historically, small business start-ups, requiring
capital, would re-finance their home to obtain the funds.
With fewer homeowners… well you can do the math. This
is exacerbated by the reluctance on the part of financial
institutions to make loans to these very same small
business start-ups.
Jim Davis asked how he might best invest into the local
business environment. Mr. Dubroff offered a suggestion
that he consider Calavo, but then tempered this with: “stay
with what you know”.
Don Chalfant asked whether the California business climate
with apparent negative business environment was due
more to regulations or to taxes. The answer, in general,
was that the regulations are becoming more onerous across
the country; business and income and property taxes are
the primary negative forces that impair business survival in
California.
You may subscribe to the Pacific Coast business Times print
copy for about $50/year or, you may sign-up at no charge
