By Fiona JOIN the Board... When I started this position at the hall I never realized the upkeep and maintenance of the hall side of things. It is a big building! It is a well taken care of building thanks to a number of people who have given their time to fundraise, fill out grants, fix things, and maintain the building. We just finished doing a Life Cycle Report for the next 5-10 years and the Facility committee will work on getting the recommendations in the report done. On a daily basis there is a running toilet, light bulb out, sticky floor, or concern that needs addressed. I am not complaining – it is just interesting to reflect on the different areas that this position covers – and I know how to fix a stopped up kitchen sink now. If you happen to be interested in the inner workings of the Hall itself, the Board needs a Facility Director! It is terrific that there are some new faces on the Board of Directors that bring a new interest, focus, and set of skills to the table. Membership Director Member at Large I am finding it hard to think about December, as I am still a little bit over chocolated from Hallowe’en – I heard such a neat idea for Hallowe’en – ‘Trunk or Treat’. Something that I think would be fun to do one Hallowe’en. I will have to look into it for the future – but it sure sounds like fun. Is like a ‘show and shine’, but with scary cars and lots of candy! Simply find your niche... Committee for Special Events Committee for 2 New Play Yards Your Expertise and Passion are essential to the future of Haysboro! At the first luncheon meeting at one of the round tables for 6 were seated two female cats from Siam, 2 male Bengal tigers and 2 male cats from Nepal. When served first, one of the Siamese cats said: “Ah quiche! I just love quiche.” One of the Bengal tigers said: “Tiger men don’t eat quiche.” One of the Nepalese cats then said” “But Katmandu!” Calgary Bottle Exchange Kanto Sho Karate Check the website or call the Hall for information about the possibility of a community carol concert in midDecember. Originally from France and with family roots in Spain and Algeria, Pascal believes the best businesses understand what makes their customers happy and listens to their needs. “It’s a bit like running a food market in a small town: you know all your customers by name, you know why they visit and you cater to that.” What all of it amounts to is a sense of community, camaraderie, and social interaction that so much of modern society is missing. Metal Galaxy provides a place where everyone is equal, parents can bond with their teenage kids again and new friendships can be forged! Metal Galaxy is open on Tuesdays (10-3), Wednesdays (11-6), Thursdays and Fridays (11-9) and Saturdays (11-8). The store features expert advice on how to play various games and customize your decks of cards, a loyalty reward program, exclusive custom items such as Instant Collections and custom made decks as well as a weekly tournament schedule. In the 2013, 14 provincial achievement tests and diploma exams, our students continued to outperform the province in most subjects, particularly at the excellence standard. In addition, our high school completion rate continues to rise. In the last year, our students have also made significant contributions to their communities, volunteering thousands of hours and raising funds for local and global initiatives. Looking forward to 2015 and beyond, we know we have more work to do. Education trends are shifting as we continue to support and improve student learning. These include shifts in how we assess and report on student learning and how we ensure the success of our high school students. Our system has also been very involved in the provincial government’s curriculum redesign initiative, which is reviewing what K-12 students learn and how they learn it. As we continue to make these shifts, the voices of our parents and community will continue to play an important role. The Board of Trustees would like to wish you and your family a happy holiday season and wish you all the best in the new year. We always welcome your comments, feedback and questions. You can contact the Board of Trustees at [email protected]. Haysboro Preschool We have been so busy at the preschool it is hard to believe the Holiday season is here. Back in September we welcomed many new families to our community of learners, and the children began (or continued) their early childhood education in our classroom. As usual, family involvement helps us connect to the people in our neighbourhood, and plays a vital role in creating positive memories and outcomes for our children. Thanks everyone! In preparation for our Holiday celebration, the children have been working on gifts for giving, songs for singing and a performance of “The Gingerbread Man” for sharing at our Christmas parties on December 11 and 12. Wish us luck! Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year from the Haysboro Community Preschool. It stays green longer and is less of a fire hazard. • Always test for freshness before buying. A tree with high moisture content is safer. Very few needles should fall when the butt of the tree is tapped on the ground. Needles should bend, not break, and the stump should be sticky with resin. • Use a tree stand with a broad base for better balance and a large water reservoir to immerse the tree butt. Make sure the base of the tree is always in water. • Do not set your tree up near a heat source such as a radiator, television, fireplace or heating duct and do not block doors or windows. • Never use lit candles on a tree. • After the holidays, properly dispose of trees as soon as possible. The City of Calgary has a Christmas tree recycling program. For details visit calgary.ca. Decorations • Choose flame-retardant or flame resistant and noncombustible decorations. • If there are young children or pets in your home, avoid very small decorations. • Avoid using angel hair (glass wool) together with spray-on snowflakes. This combination is highly combustible. • Do not use metallic ornaments. If they make contact with defective wiring, they become a shock hazard. Lights • Use CSA (Canadian Standards Association) and/or ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) approved lights. • Use the proper lights for the environment. Indoor lights should not be used outdoors because they lack weatherproof connections. Some outdoor lights burn too hot for indoor use. • Inspect lights before use. Check for cracked bulbs and frayed, broken or exposed wires. Discard faulty bulbs. 20 • Do not use electric lights on metallic trees. A faulty system could energize the tree and shock or electrocute anyone who touches it. Illuminate metallic trees with coloured floodlights placed at a safe distance from the tree and out of reach. • Turn off all tree and display lights before retiring for the night or leaving the house. • Make sure not to overload an electrical outlet or extension cord. Candles • Place candles away from combustible materials such as curtains, paper, furniture, etc. • A responsible adult should always be present when candles are lit. • Keep candles in sturdy holders, on stable surfaces and away from drafts, children and pets. • Keep matches and lighters used to light candles in a safe place, away from children. • Ensure candles are extinguished when leaving the room or going to bed. • Remember: when you go out, blow out. Fireplaces • Never burn gift-wrap, boxes, cartons or other packaging in the fireplace. They burn too rapidly and generate far too much heat. • Do not hang Christmas stockings from the mantel when the fireplace is in use. • Always use a screen in front of the fireplace to protect against flying sparks. Fireplace glass can heat to more than 200 C degrees. Keep children away from fireplaces to avoid injury. • Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a fire. • Use only seasoned, dried wood. • Never leave the fire unattended or let it smolder. • Clean out the ashes regularly but allow them to cool for 72 hours in a metal container. Store outside, away from flammable materials. • Do not use Christmas trees for firewood. • Have chimneys cleaned annually by a certified technician. Last but not least ... make sure your smoke detectors work. McLaws Barrister & Solicitor (403) 710-3712 www.mclawslaw.ca 22 Winter has arrived and it’s time to be mindful of how the buildup of ice and snow on city sidewalks can post a risk of injury to Calgarians. Older adults, those with mobility issues or parents pushing strollers or walking with young children, may find it treacherous to venture out if neighbours are not diligent about clearing the ice and snow. All of us can help make walking in our communities safe for everyone if we work together and follow the regulations set out in Calgary’s Street Bylaw. Property owners are responsible for clearing all sidewalks adjacent to their property. This means removing all snow and ice down to the bare concrete within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. If, as a property owner, you do not live at the residence, it is important to work with tenants or arrange for a contractor to clear the snow. It’s also important to note that if a property is being developed, the developer is often the owner responsible to clean sidewalks around a construction site or empty lot. The property owner is ultimately responsible for snow clearing under the bylaw. For any ice that is difficult to remove, a de-icing mixture is available at fire halls or Roads depots. Please bring your own container. Remember that snow from private property cannot be put onto the road or boulevard. Large mounds of snow in the street can impede the flow of traffic, limit driver and pedestrian visibility and hinder Blue Cart and Black Bin collection. Sidewalks also need to be clear of obstructions such as electrical cords. When plugging in your vehicle, make sure you don’t place an electrical cord on or over any portion of a street. Have you considered being a Snow Angel? It can be a challenge for some residents to shovel and clear their sidewalks. The Snow Angel campaign encourages citizens to be good neighbours by helping older adults and others in need with their snow removal. All you have to do is adopt someone’s sidewalk this winter and keep it clear. Let’s remember that snow, ice and obstructions on our sidewalks can result in serious injuries and can cause those with limited mobility to be confined indoors. Be a good neighbour and clear the snow. To find out more about snow and ice removal in Calgary visit calgary.ca/snow or contact 311. For information on how to become a Snow Angel, visit Calgary.ca/snowangels. It commonly affects the ears, nose, cheeks, fingers and toes •Skin appears red, but also turns white when pressed. It may also feel numb to the touch •When treated promptly, frost-nipped skin will heal without complication •Gently re-warming the affected area in a warm environment is advised Alberta’s parks are the result of geology and geologic processes and therefore contain many geological wonders. This talk will focus on a few of these including answers to the following: “The where and why of hot pots”. “Rock and spontaneous combustion.” “Why the big stink at Harper Creek?” and more! “Warp speed Alberta?” “Where was Vermilion Chutes 370 million years ago?” “Where are you in the pink in Alberta?” “Why a railroad in the Athabasca River?” and “Marvellous megamarbles.” Frostbite •Frostbite occurs when skin becomes so cold, that the skin and underlying tissue freeze •It may look white and waxy and will feel hard to the touch •Treatment begins with removal from the cold environment and placing the affected area in warm, not hot, water, until re-warmed •Seek further medical attention as required Hypothermia •Hypothermia is an abnormally low body temperature – less than 34°C (as compared to normal body temperature of about 37°C) •People suffering hypothermia may act inappropriately with uncharacteristic stumbling, mumbling, and fumbling, as their body temperature continues to lower •Early recognition and prompt medical attention is crucial. Left untreated, hypothermia may progress to coma and/ or death •Call 9-1-1. Don’t forget to protect yourself from the factors that originally lead to the patient’s situation •Gentle re-warming should start as quickly as possible, including: removal of wet, or constrictive clothing; covering with blankets, or sleeping bags; and protecting the person from further heat loss (wind, moisture and contact with cold surfaces) •Dress in layers – it’s easier to remove layers, when warm, rather than not having enough layers, when cold Having access to a survival/first-aid kit within your vehicle is also advised. COUNCILLOR’s Report Brian Pincott Ward 11 www.ward11calgary.ca As winter arrives, so does the end of this year’s budget negotiations. For the past month, Council has heard from each of The City’s main business units regarding their achievements, challenges and projects that they will be undertaking. Many hours have been spent reviewing each portfolio, listening to presentations and discussions with my Council colleagues. We spent many more hours negotiating the budget for each business unit, deciding what could be cut and what would be staying, until we finally arrived at a final decision on the 2015-2018 budgets. Thank you for participating in all of the events and engagement opportunities regarding Action Plan 20152018 over the past year! Your input helped us make tough decisions regarding what programs and projects would be funded. Now that budget deliberations have ended, our focus is turning to the upcoming winter and holiday season.
