Living Christmas Tree a
gift to the community
HONEA PATH FIRST BAPTIST members put
in countless hours each year to present the Living Christmas Tree as a gift to the community.
The tree is constructed in the sanctuary each
year by church members. The presentation
is under the direction of music minister Sam
Dickerson, who also performs. There is never an
admission charge. Above, wise men bring gifts
to Baby Jesus during “The Story of Christmas.”
Mary and Joseph are played by Josh and Katie
Moody, and Baby Jesus is played by Julia King.
At left, the group Highest Praise sings. In addition to performing during the annual Living
Christmas Tree event, the group performs
throughout the area and is about to release a new
album.

District looks at hiring new resource officers
B E LT O N - H O N E A
PATH -- School District
Two officials and police are
working together to hire
school resource officers
for Belton and Honea Path
middle schools.
District Two trustees
discussed the possibility
during their regular monthly meeting last week.
“The board is definitely
interested in hiring SROs
(school resource officers),”
said superintendent Dr.
Richard Rosenberger. “The
officers would be housed at
the middle schools, but can
be utilized at the elementary schools also.”
Belton Police Chief
Tommy Clamp has applied
for a grant which would foot
a small portion of a Belton
Middle resource officer’s
salary and benefits.
The district is looking
at other options for funding
the rest of the costs, as well
as putting a Honea Path Police Department officer at
that town’s middle school.
The Anderson County
Sheriff’s Office provides a
deputy at BHP High School.
In other matters handled
last week by trustees:
•
Trustee
Danny
Hawkins was sworn into office. Greg Tysl was elected
chairman, Phil Ashley vice
chairman and Brenda Cooley secretary.
• Trustees approved a
resolution that would allow
the district to spend up to
$7.2 million for upgrades
through ABM to the dis-
trict’s HVAC system, infrastructure and lighting, as
well as a roof at BHP, part
of a roof at Belton Middle
and more items.
“This should generate a
savings,” said Rosenberger,
adding that the savings
could total several million
dollars. “It’s a pretty good
deal.”

Lady Bears off to 5-0
HONEA PATH -- The Lady
Bears relied on their defense last
week as they defeated Hanna 62-33
in a non-region basketball game.
Dominique Duck held Hanna’s
best offensive weapon scoreless
as BHP remained undefeated for
the season.
“Dominique gave an amazing
effort and played a great defensive
game,” said head coach Rafael
Traynum. “I give credit to my de-
fensive coordinator Charles Scott
for coming up with a great strategy
to contain their three-point attack.
Hanna scored 72 points vs Wren
a week earlier, so we knew they
could shoot the basketball. The
girls played great defensively.”
BHP junior Zipporah Scott
pumped in 24 points to lead all
scorers and Vieandra Dixon added
13.

basketball season.
BHP lost twice to Hanna and
once to Westside, both non-region

Aaron Taylor led the Bears in
scoring in all three games, pumping
in a total of 50 points.
Hanna jumped out to a 17-13
first-quarter lead when the two
schools first met Dec. 2 and went
on to win 74-49.
BHP, who was outscored in
every quarter, trailed 36-21 at the
half.
Xavier Hawthorne added a
dozen points.
One week later BHP fell again
to Hanna 69-41 in front of a home
crowd.
The Bears trailed 38-26 at the
half and were plagued with poor
shooting over the last 16 minutes.
Hanna went on a 30-15 run in
the second half.
Taylor led the Bears with 16
points. Hawthorne and Malcolm
Williams had 10 points each.

Fouls, turnovers
lead to Cubs’ loss
HONEA PATH -- The Cubs
played fairly even with Sanders for
the first half last week, but 12 minutes later they found themselves
with a 62-39 loss.
After trailing by seven at the
half, Honea Path went cold on offense, fouled and failed to protect
the basketball.
Meanwhile Sanders found its
range and had the hot hand. The Cubs
trailed 50-28 after three periods.
Late in the game Preston Ashley
provided a spark of excitement as
he came off the bench, stole the
ball three times at mid court and
scored three uncontested lay-ups.
One night later the Cubs fought
back against Bell Street Red, but
fell two points shy of a win.
