December 2014 - Volume XVIII, Issue 12 1720 Lime Kiln Road Green Bay, WI 54311 [email protected] Don’t Let Your House Guests Stress You Out This Season…Here’s How You Can Get Ready Now! ‘Tis the season to entertain, and if you have a crowd of people soon invading your home then you have some work to do. Whether it is for a party or an extended stay there are basically 3 areas that you need to tackle before the fun commences. #1 Clean. You have enough to worry about during the holidays than dealing with making sure the house is spic and span before the company arrives. But at the same time, you want your guests to enjoy your comfortable clean home. You have two choices; you can do it yourself or delegate. And sometimes a combination of both is the best answer. You can start cleaning a week before they arrive and chop your chores down into small tasks. For example, clean bathrooms on Monday, wash bedding on Tuesday, clean floors on Wednesday, clean the kitchen on Thursday, and empty the trash on Friday. It’s much easier to chunk down your chores so you don’t have to spend the whole day cleaning. Or, if it’s in the budget, you can treat yourself to a professional housecleaner the day before company arrives. Of course you’re going to want your carpets cleaned by a professional so everything is sparkling and fresh for the festivities, so be sure to give me a call early in the month. #2 Stock. With company comes lots of fun and lots of food. It’s always nice to stock up on your guest’s favorite coffee brands and breakfast items. You can prebake goodies, and stock your freezer with some dishes you make ahead of time, so you have easy home cooked options. Of course, Costco can be your best friend when you are stocking up for a house full of guests. If you need some help with the extra grocery budget you can usually find great coupons for your favorite grocery stores by following them on Facebook or signing up for their email promotions. #3 Gift. When the guests arrive it’s nice to greet them with a welcoming gift or a party favor. And this doesn’t have to be a gift that breaks the bank. A thoughtful handmade gift is always appreciated and often more special. You could spend a Saturday afternoon with your kids creating bracelets for your guests, perfecting a signature jam recipe, or decorating picture frames. And, of course, Pinterest.com will give you endless ideas on DIY gifts for your guests. But the most important thing to remember is you don’t have to be perfect, no one expects you to be Martha Stewart. It’s okay to relax, and just settle for “it’s good enough”. Enjoy your guests! After all, how can you turn down a second slice of Grandma’s famous “heaven on a plate”? You really don’t have to if you remember that you can keep your weight in check by sneaking in a little extra exercise and by making healthy choices when you’re away from the holiday table. 1. Popcorn done right. It’s satisfying and packs a nice low calorie punch per cup. Pop it in a small amount of coconut oil and use the butter sparingly to keep it a healthy snack. 2. Waffles and peanut butter. Okay, that doesn’t sound healthy at first, but it can be. There are many whole grain or gluten free waffles on the market that are easy to pop in a toaster. Smear a waffle with a tablespoon of organic PB and you have a very satisfying snack that comes in at less than 200 calories. 3. Grab a bar. With so many delicious, whole food snack bars on the market your choices are almost endless. Brands like Kind and Lara are minimally processed and pack a lot of flavor into them. 4. Hummus with a crunch. A few tablespoons of hummus with a plate of carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers along with a serving of your favorite healthy crackers will keep hunger at bay without the risk of added pounds. 5. Fruit and dip. Take a plate of your favorite fruit and dip it into a serving of a mixture of peanut butter and Greek yogurt and you’ll have a snack that is a delightful treat that feeds the sweet tooth naturally. Make it easy on yourself by stocking your fridge and pantry with some healthy snacking options that go beyond carrot sticks and celery. The Idea Corner December Is National Impaired Driving Month! 5 Tips To Save Lives Impaired driving goes beyond drunk driving, it’s an umbrella that also covers people who are driving drugged. Impaired driving is a problem that is on the rise. According to www.StopDruggedDriving.com a conservative estimate is 20% of traffic accidents are caused by drugged driving. December is a great month to raise awareness for impaired driving because of all the holiday parties and road trips. Its the perfect time to remind everyone you love to be on the lookout for impaired drivers and to be sure they don’t ever get behind the wheel impaired. Here’s how you can support National Impaired Driving month… #1. Designate a driver. This is something we have heard many times, it’s not a new concept to anyone. But the reason we hear it again and again is, it works. Always designate a driver who will stay sober and drug free. #2. Support safe driving. Support your loved ones by letting them know they have access to a safe ride when they need it. Drunk, drugged, or both, people need to know they can get a ride and not have to drive. #3. Report unsafe drivers. If you see an erratic driver or suspect an impaired driver call 911 immediately. Your call could save lives. #4. Spread the word. Share your support of National Impaired Driving month with all your followers through social media. The more people who you reach, the more people who have the subject at the top of their awareness and the better chances of minimizing the 100% preventable tragedies that impaired driving brings. #5. Reach out to a victim or a victim’s family. Find a local family who are victims of an impaired driver and see if they need a meal or just send them an encouraging message. You can usually find victims to help and support on www.GoFundMe.com Have a safe and fun holiday season! This is the perfect time of year to curl up on the couch with your family and a bowl of popcorn and watch your favorite movies. Here’s a list of 4 family-friendly movies you might want to add to your list: My Fair Lady – Audrey Hepburn circa 1964, who can ever get enough of Audrey? You can’t go wrong with almost 3 hours of singing and dancing, gorgeous costumes and sets, lose yourself in an era gone by. Freaky Friday – I’m talking the Disney flick from 1976. Your kids will love to see the 70’s styles and it’s fun to see a freckle faced Jodie Foster in her young teen years. Parent Trap – Not the 90’s remake, but the 1961 version starring Disney darling Hayley Mills. It’s a throw back to innocence, and the opening credits alone are worth the watch. State Fair – This is Americana at it’s best. This 1945 classic will transport you to a generation where gorgeous dresses and manners ruled the day, and you might even wish your hair could bounce like Jeanne Crain’s.
