The high school senior has spent the past four months in Altamont with Chris and Annette Altman as hosts. Wienecke, a native of Hedmuenden, near Frankfurt, spent a year writing essays, filing paperwork, and completing administrative tasks before he could make his voyage to the States. It is a voyage he is glad he made. “I didn’t have culture shock. I felt at home from the beginning. And to have people really care about you, it’s amazing,” he stated. The only difficulty came as he celebrated his 18th birthday state-side. “It was a little sad because 18 is like turning 21 here, but I enjoyed it,” he said. While here, he has reveled in the school spirit exhibited at Altamont. “You are proud of your school. The sports teams, the band, the students really get involved,” he stated, adding that he is participating in student council, scholastic bowl, and is planning to play baseball in the spring.
