A Tough Loss!

The last few weeks of the football season were definitely something to see! Gunderson’s
JV team came out with a win against Westmont, leaving them scoreless for most of the game.
Both teams fought hard, but the Grizzlies fought harder with two scoring drives, one ending with
a touchdown run from Joseph Catano and one ending in a touchdown pass to Maurice Howard.
Kenny Cox also had a good game, with several amazing runs, and the JV team won 14-7.
However, our Varsity team did not have the same kind of game, and after a tough first half the
Grizzlies simply didn’t have the time to forge a comeback. The Grizzlies had to make several
substitutions until they finally got into the groove of things, and in the second half Harrison
Bueselnick threw a bomb down the field to a wide open Dejon Packer for 68 yards. Then on
another drive, Harrison threw a touchdown to Dejon for 53 yards. However, even with the great
contributions from both, the Grizzlies couldn’t make a comeback and lost 35-13.
How to Prepare for College!

College life, something that will become the next chapter in a lot of our lives sooner or later. If you are a Freshman or
Sophomore, it’s something you won’t really have to worry about until your years as an upperclassman. But for us Seniors and even some
early bird Juniors, it’s something very real. A reality that is realistically only months away. Now, I don’t know about the rest of you
seniors, but that to me is some very overwhelming stuff. That’s why I took the time to make life a little less stressful for all of us by
making the following list to inform and help jumpstart all of our minds so that we are as prepared as we possibly can be.

Get Involved:
College isn’t just about the work, make your school a part of you so that once you’re in college you can get the full experience by
getting involved.
!
Get Your Work Done:
Studying is a big part of college, develop those skills now and you’re set. Also be sure to stay on top of college applications, financial
aid, and all the other work to be done.
!
Challenge Yourself:
Take advantage of the more difficult classes taught here in high school. This will prepare you for the challenge of college and better you
as a student. These classes are made to get us ready for that next level.
!
Read:
Again most of college is studying which obviously involves reading. Develop those skills now and college homework will become a
little less stressful.
!
Get Help:
There are a lot of staff here at Gunderson who would be more than ecstatic to help you prepare for college, whether it be choosing one,
helping with the application process, and choosing classes for college. Take advantage of their help.
!
Don’t Procrastinate:
Seniors, get applications in, personal statements reviewed and in, SAT and/or ACT tests done and sent out, and any other college
preparations done as early as possible. Don’t put off everything until the last day
!
Look For A Mentor:
Many people here at Gunderson are here for you. Find a few that you feel the most comfortable with and get help from them for
personal statements, improving yourself for college, and any other questions you might have concerning college.

Involve Your Family:
They might be the best mentors you can get. Their advice and help can be very valuable to you and they can even help you with
applications and statements at home and give you only more knowledge than you already have.
!
Yes, this is the last year for a lot of us, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to relax. If anything, this advice should be something us seniors
should already be doing. Deadlines are coming soon guys, it’s time to tighten our belts.

Taylor Swift: 1989!

The country turned pop singer debuted her fifth album, 1989, on October 27th and in less
than a week the album became the first (and so far only) album to sell more than a million copies
and go platinum in 2014. The 13 song album features Max Martin, Ryan Tedder, as well as other
well known pop artists and has influences of Madonna, Outkast, and Cyndi Lauper. 1989 is
different from Taylor’s other works because it is Swift’s first attempt at a strictly pop album without
country influence’s and with her hit single “Shake It Off” she shows off her ability to create a song
that appeals to mass audiences. In the song she addresses her critics and and her supposed
“boyfriend issues” and “shakes it off”. Admittedly, the song is catchy, however the album as a
whole is only average. It doesn’t change anything, it doesn’t give you anything you haven’t heard
before, and it doesn’t even have a classic Taylor Swift break up song. The album has no purpose.
It’s strictly pop music for the sake of pop music. The only reason this album is so significant is
because it’s by Taylor Swift. She has finally transitioned from a country singer to a pop artist, and
has managed to keep an extremely large and loyal fanbase. However, her first attempt at a strictly
pop album leaves a lot to be desired and the only people I could recommend the album to are those
who already have it and die hard Taylor Swift fans.
Tha Carter V!

Lil Wayne, the undeclared yet unquestioned leader of Young Money, has a new album on the
way. Tha Carter V, the finale of the Carter series, was scheduled to be released earlier in the year,
but was delayed to December 9th just a day before it’s supposed release date. However, fans were
not left completely out of luck because Wayne has already released 6 singles 2 of which are
officially from the album, and has been featured on a ton of other artist’s songs as of late.
The singles (Believe Me, Grindin, Krazy, Gotti, Off Day, and D’Usse) each have a different feel,
with D’Usse being the best lyrically and most upbeat, Krazy sounding spastic and quick, and
Believe Me has an obvious Drake influence. From what we’ve heard so far, Tha Carter V could
easily be the best album of the Carter series, and possibly the best piece of work Wayne has ever
put out (which with 11 albums, 19 mixtapes, 2 EPs, and over 600 songs that he’s been featured on,
says a lot). If you simply cannot wait for Tha Carter V you should listen to the earlier albums in the
series, and if you want to listen to something a little more recent from Wayne I Am Not A Human
Being II is also a great album. Tha Carter V is guaranteed to be one of the best albums of the year,
but with the other great hip-hop albums that came out earlier this year there is going to be a lot of
discussion if this album stands up to the other’s in its category.

Recently, hackers have taken the world in stride. They have hacked pretty much every
major retail store in the hopes of obtaining your personal information. They are not just limited to
the stores, however. They have also been hacking email accounts. As one CNN report says, “If
your Gmail was hacked, blame your friends.” (Jose Pagliery November 14, 2014). They are right.
Hackers dupe victims into divulging their personal information or break codes. Once they are
inside your email, they scan it, looking for anything with your signature and personal information.
They will then send emails to your friends with a sob story asking for money. They may also set
up automatic email forwarding, so your emails will be sent to the hackers instead of the intended
recipient. This is done to ensure that your friends never know that you were hacked. Some may
even delete your contacts so you have no way of warning your friends. There are ways to protect
yourself, however. Delete any email with personal information or other sensitive data. Also, sign
up for two step email authentication. The second password is sent to you by a text message. The
first time you sign into gmail, it will ask you for the second password. This will be done once on
that computer. If you or somebody else tries to log into your email from another computer, the
second password will be required. This will add thirty seconds and may seem like an eternity in
the fast paced world we live, but it is worth it.

Kindness Still Exists!
A Recipe For
The Holidays!

You may not have noticed, but a little club is emerging at Gunderson. Alexandra Lee and
Alejandra Fraume took it upon themselves to start Acts of Random Kindness (ARK). This club
specializes in doing little things for strangers, hence the name Acts of Random Kindness. The act could
range from opening the door for someone to helping an injured person to just complementing someone.
ARK at Gunderson is a branch of the nationwide ARK. Across the United States, it is present in three
other states, Florida, New York, but most of the concentration is in California. They may be a grass root
club, but they have taken it upon themselves to make people’s lives easier, make it more pleasant. Some
of the people reading this will question of the validity of such a club, but the members of ARK are doing
something which not a lot of us are doing. We generally ignore the little things, but ARK forces us to
consider the little, minute things. ARK meets every Thursday in Ms. Evan’s room, D-6. Members can
potentially earn scholarships, but this is still being discussed. It is highly recommended that you join this
fledgling club and make Gunderson a better place. Here is Alexandra Lee, the President of ARK, telling
us more about the club.

Q. What led to the creation of ARK?
A. ARK Club wasn't my original idea. It was created by a girl names Sabrina Ma at Independence High
School, and since then she has been able to spread this movement to 25 other schools. I heard about last
year, and couldn't stop thinking about it. It was a spur of the moment sort of thing, and we started the
club here at Gunderson!

Q. How many members are currently in the club?
A. Our impact has been small lately, but we hope to make ARK one of the biggest clubs in campus and
for everyone in Gunderson to benefit from our endeavors.
!

Q. How has or will ARK affect Gunderson?
A. Why? Why not? I believe nothing but good can come from a club like this. I believe it can create a
very positive school environment and bring out happiness in a lot of people. Kindness can appeal to
anybody, and everyone has the capacity to be kind.
!
Q. What does ARK hope to accomplish?
A. Our members do weekly arktivities . So far we've done things like pass out lollipops with
compliments to people. They also had to learn their names. We also passed out Disney candy grams
during Homecoming week in order to promote school spirit.
!
Q. Why should students join ARK?
A. Kindness has the power to affect the world, and to create a huge movement. They should join because
we can have the power to change the school, and possibly the world, for the better.

The Gunderson Grizzlies football team played their final home game on Friday, November 7th,
against the San Jose High Bulldogs. For a lot of the seniors, this was the final football game of their life, so
as you can imagine this game was played with a lot of passion and intensity. The Grizzlies went out and
tried their hardest to finish with another win, especially at home. But San Jose High came away with the
victory with a final score of 35-14. The Bulldogs led 21-0 at halftime, and the Grizzlies worked even
harder in the second half to try to make a comeback. Julian Gutierrez scored off a fumble forced by John
Saens and took it to the house. Isaac Romero added a rushing touchdown, to Gunderson’s comeback bid.
But in the end, San Jose High’s quick start proved too much to overcome, and Gunderson came up short.
Our Gunderson Grizzlies took on the Live Oak Acorns, at Live Oak, to finish off the regular season.

Since the holidays are coming
up, I decided to do some
baking to test what I’d be
baking for Christmas for my
family to enjoy with some hot
tea. I came across these
Nutella S’mores recipe and it
was the best thing I’ve ever
tasted. I would like to share
this piece of heaven so you
guys can try it out as well.
Here’s the instructions on what
to do and the materials you’ll
need:

Materials:
12 medium-sized, storebought chocolate chip cookies. 3/4 cup nutella 12 large marshamallows, cut
in half 3 large candy canes, crushed 12 Hershey kisses
!
Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
Fahrenheit. Spread each
cookie with one Tablespoon of
Nutella. Next, place two
marshmallow halves on top.
Now, place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake
for 10 minutes or until
marshmallows are goldenbrown. Remove from oven
and top with one Hershey kiss
per cookie. To top it off, you
can add your favorite icecream as well. This will make
it taste even more yummier if
thats possible.

A Pipe-Bot That Seeks Leaks:
In March, what started as a
negligible leak in a gas pipe
caused an explosion that
leveled two apartment
buildings and killed eight
people in New York City.
Leaky pipes can pose a real
danger, but there isn’t an oil,
natural gas, or water network
in the world that doesn’t have
them.
“No matter what type of pipe
system you have, leaks go
undetected for a long time,”
says Kamal Youcef-Toumi, a
mechanical engineer at MIT.
Existing acoustic sensors aim
to detect leaks from aboveground, but to catch smaller
leaks sooner, Youcef-Toumi’s
team is designing an
autonomous robot to patrol
pipes from within. The twoliter-bottle-size prototype
cruises through pipes at up to
3 miles per hour in search of
subtle pressure differences that
indicate a loss of fluids. Then
the pipe-bot sends an alert
with GPS coordinates to a
technician who can locate and
repair the leak.

tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the

the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together

With the loss of ten seniors, Varsity
Girls Soccer will focus on rebuilding their
team this year. We sat down with the
Varsity Coach Herlth and two returning
Varsity players to see what their thoughts
are about this upcoming 2014-2015
season.

Coach Herlth Interview:

Q: What’s your main focus for this
season?
A: “Well we have a young team so we
want to focus on becoming a team and I
really want to make sure everyone feels
welcome.”
Q: Any new strategies for this new
team?
A: “Yeah, we have to build our defense all
over again. Everything we are going to do
is centered around defense and we are
going to build from there.”
Q: How will you monitor and evaluate
the success of your coaching?
A: “I will monitor the success of my
coaching by the happiness of my players.
If they are having fun then I am doing
something right!”
Q: Which areas of your coaching would
you like to develop and why?
A: “I would like to decrease my sarcasm.
I want to increase preparation.”

Boys Basketball
With tryouts finishing up and the preseason coming fast, the 2014-2015 Gunderon Grizzlies
boys basketball season is almost here. Last season the boys Varsity team had a record of 11-3 in
league. They also made it to the third round of playoffs (CCS), and lost to Aptos High School.
Varsity lost three seniors last year. They were all pretty influential and significant to the team in
terms involving leadership, scoring, rebounding, teaching, and representation. Another big event
that came out of last season was that, because Varsity got second in B league, they got the choice to
move to move up to A league, and they did. With a huge season last year for the Gunderson boys
basketball team, this year they have big shoes to fill and the loss of seniors doesn’t help. But the
players moving up to Varsity from JV can fill those shoes because they had the best record ever in
Gunderson history which was 10-4. This year the boys basketball team will have to represent their
community, school, and the program. Come support at their first game. Its on November 29 at
Harker High School at 7:00 p.m.

Girls Basketball
With winter sports approaching Gunderson girls basketball are preparing for a big season.
Tryouts are over and the teams are set. Coming off and 8-6 record in league, but managed to get to
the fourth round of playoffs (CCS). Losing two seniors, Lira Ndifon, Essence Johnson, Mia
Medina, Demi Kouretas, and Vivianna Abrego will step up this year and have high expectations.
Gunderson girls basketball have a lot to prove and are more than ready for this upcoming season.
Come support here at Gunderson High School’s gym on November 25 7:00 p.m. vs. Sobrato.

Black Friday Madness! !

Black Friday is one of the most craziest
days through out the year. It’s the time of the
year where everyone goes shopping like crazy!
I do have to say that there are a lot of good
deals. The trick to get those good deals is to be
there very early and that is why you see people
getting in line like a week before. It’s literally
kind of insane how seriously most people take
it. Honestly Best Buy is probably one of the
most packed stores to go into on Black Friday.
There is some good things that happen like,
getting good deals, seeing other people be
crazy, and also running into a lot of people you
know. Imagine how bad it must be for people
working on black friday. They probably have to
have a lot of patience because imagine people
with all that attitude! Most of the stores open at
12 a.m. right after thanksgiving. It’s perfect to
walk and make all the food go away.
Overall everyone should at least try and
experience it. It wouldn’t hurt to just go one
time. Try and see how you feel about it. You
might find something you really like at a cheap
price. You never know!

BoBo Drinks is best described as
Starbucks with an Asian spin. Many people go
to BoBO’s for the specialty jars that they
serve that have a mixture of tea and fruits. I
personally recommend the Very Berry jar!
Right when you walk in, the first thing you
hear is a variety of music playing in the
background of people having fun and friendly
conversations. The menu is very organized &
easy to read, and the entire place is very
colorful. The vibe is amazing! The workers
greet you with respect & bring your drinks out
within a matter of minutes. They also serve
sandwiches & appetizers which I’d also
recommend that you try. The price is not too
expensive considering they drinks are
amazingly delicious, and the drinks are about
the same price as Starbucks. It’s located by
the Walmart on Story Rd. and next to the
restaurant Crawdaddy! Go try it!

Q: what is BSU?
A ( Black Student Union)

Q: When does this club hold
meetings?
A: We hold meetings at lunch
in C-2 every Monday
!
Q: What made you want to
pick up the program?
A: First reason is because I
feel strongly about the black
community coming together
and gaining a deeper
understanding and
appreciation of who they are.
Second reason is because I
was asked by the former BSU
Advisor (Ms. Dawkins).

Q: Who runs BSU?
A: BSU is evolving into it’s
correct order of being student
ran. Because this is our first
year in three years as the
student advisor I had to play
the lead role. Now that BSU
has been existing for a couple
months now students took
ownership and lead roles
within the club.

Q: What happens in BSU?
A:

• we do community service
• we’re active in on-campus
events
• we have potlucks
• host cultural events

We’ve accomplish so many
things within weeks so we’re
