ST. BRENDAN CHURCH A Catholic Parish Community : Church and School 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA 94127 Tel. No. (415) 681-4225 www.stbrendanparish.org December 21, 2014 Fourth Sunday of Advent Fourth Sunday of Advent Open your heart to the Christmas promise This time of year is full of promise and the Bethlehem star reminds us of our hope for a future of peace in our own hearts and the hearts of the world. But we cannot achieve this peace on our own. We must open our hearts to the promise of Christmas. “One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again” (Isaiah 2:4). Violence flourishes if the world accepts it as inevitable. The world can change if the love of the Christmas child takes root in our hearts. Peace flows from hearts that love. “The poor will eat their fill; those who seek the Lord will offer praise” (Psalm 22:27). Peace spreads more easily when all have enough. These days the poor are everywhere and people are struggling to hold onto hope. If we each make our holiday charitable efforts a year-round habit, perhaps the words of the psalmist will come true. “The virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). This Christmas we can once again rekindle our own sense of innocence and hope. Try to experience the new life promised with the birth of the Christ child and be like the young girl long ago who believed that nothing is impossible when God is involved. Reflections of Our Parochial Vicar Merry Christmas There are times when we want to do certain things that are good in nature but we find natural forces preventing us from doing it. David wanted to build a temple for the Lord, this ordinarily is the needful but the prophet Nathan comes to tell David that God has declined this offer. It is instructional that even though this was a positive idea, David did not press on, rather he backed up and allowed the will of God to be done. There are also times and moments when God demands of us something very difficult and probably superfluous in the eyes of the world but again we are to heed to the will God. Mary was invited to become a mother before marriage and out of marriage, which was dangerous at that time. If a woman was caught in a case of adultery, she was stoned to death, and there was no more proof of adultery than being pregnant without marriage. It was in the midst of this rather precarious situation that Mary professed her Fiat. She accepted the will of God not minding the consequences. This has an implication for us, that as followers of Christ and children of God, we must always search for his will in our lives and when found, we must unconditionally accept it. We need to daily ask the question, “God what do you want me to do?” There is this beautiful prayer of self-abandonment to the will of God. It says, “Jesus I love you, all I have is yours, yours I am, yours I want to be, do with me whatever you will”. This seems to have been Mary’s disposition when she said; “I am the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to your will”. In the prayer that Jesus himself taught us, we say “fiat voluntas tus”, (may your will be done); this means we are to be open to the will of God. Is God asking you to consider becoming a permanent deacon? Is God asking you to become a priest or nun? Is God asking you to take up the ministry of Lector or Eucharistic minister? Let me quickly mention here that we are having a shortage of readers (lectors) at the 9:30 and 11:30 masses, and an acute shortage of Eucharistic ministers at the 11:30 mass. Would you like to consider doing the will of God through one of these ministries? It may be very inconvenient like the condition Mary who despite the odds said yes to the will of God. Please if you are considering this reach out to me or Sr. Angela or Anne Kearney. From the Parish pastoral and administrative staff we wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Our Christmas masses will be 12/24 @5pm. This is the Children’s mass. We shall project the mass in the hall and Eucharistic ministers will also bring communion to the hall, so we have enough room. 12/25 @ midnight. We shall begin before midnight with the singing of Christmas carols. Other masses on 12/25 will be 7:00 am, 8:00 am, 9:30 am and 11:30 am. We shall hold specially all of our parishioners and their loved ones who would be travelling during this season in our prayers that God may grant all of them safety in their travels. We shall also hold our pastor Fr. Ted in our prayers as he begins his annual vacation on 12/25 after the Christmas masses. Fr. Ted will be travelling to the Philippines. While in the Philippines, he will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his priestly ordination with family, friends and classmates. He also has a chance of meeting Pope Francis who just last week sent him his papal blessing on this 25th anniversary. We congratulate you Fr. Ted and wish you a safe trip and safe return back to us after your vacation. Merry Christmas. Fr. Theo Under 5 Christmas Potluck Weekly Offering Join us for the Under 5 Christmas Potluck!
