Welcome to the Little Raiders Preschool Child Care Program!!! The first day at a new child care or preschool program is an exciting adventure in your child’s life. Your child is beginning on a journey that will lead them on many roads of discovery and learning. As wonderful as this new experience may be, it can also be quite stressful for a young child as well as their parents. New situations and change can be unsettling for all of us. For many children this may be their first experience at an elementary school or perhaps the first experience of separation from parents or caregivers at home. It is common for even the most outgoing child to be anxious at first. We have provided a few suggestions for assisting your child during this time of transition. Remember the Little Raider Staff will be available to provide support and assistance… making your child’s first days happy ones! Prepare your child for the new school /daycare experience by explaining what to expect. Answer all questions directly and honestly. Convey a positive attitude. Young children are aware of your feelings. Your enthusiasm will assure the child that school can be a fun and exciting place. Establish a routine involving both the night before as well as morning preparation. Rituals and routines will add predictability and are comforting in unfamiliar situation. Clearly state to your child where you will be and when you will return. It may also be helpful to discuss what will happen when you are reunited. Maintain a clear good-bye routine. This may include warning the child you are leaving in three minutes, a kiss and hug, or a wave from the door. Once you tell your child you are leaving, it is very important that you follow through. Extending the good-bye with, “OK just one more hug and then I really have to go” tends to heighten anxiety rather than relieve it. Avoid sneaking out, as this seems to encourage children to become less trusting and makes the second day even harder. Again, please know we are here to help make the first day a happy transition and we look forward to an exciting and fun year. With respect to child custody disputes, until custody has been established by a court order, neither parent may limit the other parent from picking up the child, and the provider will release the child to a known identifiable parent. Until documentation is provided to center, we are unable to withhold a parent from picking up their child. REPORTING CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT TO PROTECTIVE SERVICES: The Portland Public School District is mandated by Michigan law, Act No. 238, governing all school and child care programs to report any suspected abuse or neglect of children in their care. Michigan law requires all child care providers to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect. Should abuse or neglect be suspected, the following steps are the usual course of action: Child Care Worker must make verbal report of the suspected case to Children’s Protective Services. Staff member will inform the suspected case to program director. A social worker or representative of the agency will visit the child at home or at the child care facility. Child Care Worker who made the oral report must complete written report and submit to CPS. All tables and food contact surfaces will be washed, rinsed and sanitized prior to and after each use for food consumption or when soiled. Toys and other surfaces will also be sanitized on a weekly basis or when soiled. Rest mats are sanitized using a three step process prior to and after each use or when soiled. PLEASE NOTE: Due to any potential allergy or reaction from a medication, STAFF WILL NOT ADMINISTER THE FIRST DOSE OF ANY MEDICATION. We do not administer Motrin or Tylenol for fever. SICK CHILDREN Please do not send a sick child to the program. Not only is it better for the child’s emotional and physical well-being to remain at home but a contagious child can affect the health of everyone in the program. If a staff member observes a change in a child’s health or if a child becomes ill while in the program, he/she will be isolated from the other children. A parent or designated adult will be contacted regarding the concern or asked to pick up an ill child. The following should be helpful in deciding when it is appropriate for your child to attend the program before, during and after an illness. These policies were written with the health of everyone in mind. 1. Change in behavior: If this is the only symptom, send your child to the program but be prepared to be notified if your child has developed other symptoms and needs to be picked up. 2. Fever: If your child’s fever is higher than 100 degrees orally then he/she MUST NOTt attend the program until 24 hours after the temperature has remained normal and the child feels well. 3. Upper respiratory disturbances: A child with a simple cold may attend the program only if he/she is fully able to participate in the daily regimen of the program. If he/she is lethargic, please keep him/her at home. 4. Gastro-intestinal disturbances: If your child vomits or has diarrhea he/she should stay at home and may return after 24 hours of no vomiting or diarrhea. 5. Pain: A child who is in pain cannot be comfortable or adequately cared for in a child care setting; therefore, the child should stay at home until the pain has been investigated and the child feels well enough to return and fully participate in the normal routine. 6. Rash: If your child has any rash it must be identified by a physician. Your child can return upon documentation from a physician. If your child has a minor illness or has one of the above six symptoms and you are unsure about sending your child to the program, please call the center. CHILD ACCIDENT, INJURY OR INCIDENT: Depending on the severity of event, parents will be notified by a staff member of accidents, injuries or incidents either by telephone or verbally at time of child pick-up. 6 ILLNESSES THAT EXCLUDE A CHILD FROM ATTENDING 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Strep throat: The child may return 24 hours after the first dose of medication is given. Hepatitis: The child may return after a statement of good health has been given by the attending physician. Impetigo: The child may return after the first 24 hours of treatment. Ringworm: The child may return after the first 24 hours of treatment. NOTIFICATION OF ABSENCE Please call the center to let the staff know if your child will be absent. If your child has a contagious illness please let us know so we can post the information. To insure confidentiality no names will be posted. IMMUNIZATIONS Children are required to have immunizations as determined by the State of Michigan Department of Public Health before they enter our child care program. If you choose not to have your child immunized, a waiver must be signed and a copy is sent to the Health Department. Waiver forms are available through the school nurse. A child who has been exempted from a vaccination is considered susceptible to the disease or diseases for which the vaccination offers protection. That child will be subject to exclusion from the program if an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease to which he or she is susceptible occurs. PHYSICAL EXAMS Each child must have a physical examination by a doctor within 30 days of their start date. Health appraisal form must be completed by a doctor and a copy of immunization records must be submitted for child’s file. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES In the event of an emergency, we will contact the parent as well as emergency professionals. If you cannot be reached, the child will be taken to the hospital specified on the emergency card. If no hospital is specified, the child will be taken to the closest hospital with a staff member accompanying child. Staff will continue to contact a parent and will also call emergency contacts. FIRE/TORNADO/LOCK-DOWN DRILLS/ EMERGENCY EVACUATION: A minimum of four fire drills are conducted per year to ensure staff and children know the emergency evacuation procedures. Children are escorted out of the building and down the sidewalk to the fence. Attendance is taken once everyone is there and standing against the fence. After the all clear has been issued, normal activities resume. Tornado drills occur at least 2 times during the months of April - October. In the event of an emergency evacuation, all parents of students in attendance will be notified via telephone as soon as staff has secured the safety of the children. Emergency Safe Shelter: Portland Middle School DISCIPLINE POLICY/PHILOSPHY: It is vital to the well-being and successful development of young children that they have clear, consistent, and appropriate limits on behavior. Because of our commitment to developing a positive sense of self-esteem, and independent responsible and caring behavior on the part of the children, we approach setting limits or discipline in a predictable manner. The limits we set arise from two areas of importance: not hurting oneself or others, and respecting everything in the physical environment. We also set up the environment to minimize the necessity of limits, and share control with the children in the decision making process. We strive for a setting that provides children with opportunities to explore their environment with consistent, ageappropriate limits. In this atmosphere, most behavioral issues are prevented. However, if behavioral issues occur, our philosophy is to help children learn values and problem-solving skills and take responsibility for their choices. Our first course of action is positive redirection (a child may simply be directed to another activity) and facilitation of win-win problem solving. Generally these two approaches are successful. If they are not, other strategies are utilized, which may include removing a child from an area or limiting access to materials for a brief time until the child is more in control and able to respond to or follow safety guidelines. It is used as a mechanism to assist the child in calming down, reassessing the situation, and reestablishing some inner control. It also provides the teacher and child an opportunity to talk about feelings. Ideally, the child determines the length of time by informing the teacher that she/he feels ready to participate in an appropriate manner. At no time will a child ever be struck, roughly handled, verbally abused, intimidated or demeaned as a disciplinary measure in the Little Raiders Preschool Child Care Program. SERIOUS DISCIPLINARY PROBLEM: A serious disciplinary problem exists when at the sole discretion of the director, a child consistently inflicts physical or emotional harm on other children, physically abuses staff, or otherwise refuses, or proves unable to conform to the rules and guidelines of the program. If a child has a chronic behavior problem the staff will work for a time with both the child and the parents. However, the right is reserved to dis-enroll any child who is unable to conform to the rules and guidelines of the program. 8 Sign In/Out Procedures Please sign your child in and out on the Little Raider’s attendance sheet located on a clipboard at the check in table. This sheet is used as a checklist for emergencies (fire drills, etc.) and is an important center record. Also make note if your child will need a lunch or milk from the Oakwood Elementary kitchen. Children are not allowed to write on this sheet. Talk with your child about how you will say good-bye when you get to school. Usually a quick good-bye is best. Tell your child exactly what you will do when you get here and when you will return. Let a staff member know when you are ready to leave. Make good-byes simple and quick. PICK-UP 1. When picking up your child, please make sure you tell a teacher and sign him/her out. If the children are outside on the playground, please use the walkie-talkie to inform staff of your arrival. They will inform you as to which playground you can find your child. 2. Please allow enough time for your child to get ready to leave. We close at 6:00pm so give enough time to touch bases with staff, look for belongings and say good-bye to friends. 3. If someone other than yourself will be picking up your child, tell a teacher and write the information on the note pad near the attendance sheet. Be sure to date and sign it. Tell the person picking up to bring a picture I.D. WE WILL NOT RELEASE A CHILD TO ANYONE (INCLUDING SIBLINGS OR GRANDPARENTS) UNFAMILIER TO OUR STAFF UNLESS WE HAVE NOTICE (WRITTEN OR PHONED IN) AND THEY HAVE A PICTURE I.D. 4. Read notices posted on the bulletin board. Postings will include reminders and notices of communicable disease exposure. 5. If you are unable to pick up your child by closing, alternate arrangements for pick up must be made. If the child is not picked up by closing, all persons listed on the emergency card will be called.
