MISSION STATEMENT
We, the family of Saint Martha Parish, in order to live richly in our Catholic heritage and Parish traditions, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and
the example of Saint Martha’s hospitality, devote our mind, body and spirit to:
Pray to God, through the most exalted mystery, the celebration of the Eucharist and recognize in this Union with Christ the Sacrifice,
Sacrament and Real Presence.
Foster a home where Christianity is welcomed as the focal point, which will allow us to continue to grow as selfless, humble Catholic
individuals and integral, involved members of our Parish and community;

WE ARE A TITHING PARISH
God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it
for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10%
to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our
personal chariƟes) in graƟtude. This spirituality of Ɵthing is as old
as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area
of our lives! The aim is to secure not the Ɵthe, but the Ɵther, not
the giŌ, but the giver—for God!

Sacrament of Baptism
Baptisms for children are celebrated on the first and third Sunday of the month
at 1:15 (except during Lent) and on most Sundays of Easter. Parental
instruction is required for the each child. See the priest after Sunday Mass to set
up baptism. For adults, contact the rectory to join the RCIA program. These
sacraments are usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil.
Sacrament of Marriage
Couples planning marriage should contact the parish office at least nine months
in advance. Weddings are not celebrated during the Season of Lent.
Anointing of the Sick
Please contact the parish office at the onset of serious illness. On the Sunday
before you enter the hospital, please ask one of the priests to administer the
Anointing, so that the healing touch of Christ may come to you in this beautiful
sacrament.
Communion Calls for Shut-Ins
The homebound can be visited regularly by the parish priests and pastoral staff
and brought Holy Communion on Sunday by special ministers of the Eucharist.
Contact Sr. Claire if there is a need.
Funerals
Upon the death of a family member, contact the parish office so that a priest or
other member of the pastoral staff can visit to offer comfort and help plan the
funeral liturgy. Arrangement regarding time and dates of funerals are made
through a funeral director.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may
be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of
Hosts. Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven
and pour down blessings upon you without measure?”
Malachi 3:10
From the Pastor: The image of “preparing the way for
the Lord” comes from the advance team who would go
over the road upon which a king was to pass. They
would remove obstacles and fill in holes, for these might
cause the king, carried in his enclosed sedan chair, to be
jostled or even ejected from his seat. In the same way,
we are called to “make things right” for the Lord’s
coming. Tithing is certainly a way of doing this, as it is
rooted in justice, the virtue which calls us to give
everyone his or her proper due. God is entitled to the
first and best we have. When we become tithers, we
make straight the way for the Lord by conforming to His
sense of justice. Thank you for embracing God’s Plan
for Giving.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
21 December 2014
Dear Members of the Parish Family,
On this Fourth and final Sunday of Advent, Scripture
focuses our attention on Our Blessed Mother and her “yes” to
God which allowed Jesus to be incarnate of her and come to
save the world. With Joseph standing beside her in difficult
circumstances (you can bet the old biddies in Nazareth had a
field day with her pregnancy!), God’s plan unfolded and the
Word became Flesh and dwelt among us.
It is this reality we celebrate this week at Christmas.
Our focus will be not only on the Holy Family in the crèche,
but also on our own families, striving to be holy, as we gather
together to celebrate the Messiah’s Sacred Birth. Next Sunday,
we specifically celebrate Jesus, Mary and Joseph as the Holy
Family, and will begin our parish’s time of spiritual preparation
for the upcoming World Meeting of Families.
May “family” remain our focus in all we do over the
Christmas Season and beyond. And may all our people realize
they belong to another family---the parish family--- and stay in
touch with their brothers and sisters, not only at Christmas but
all through the year!

WEEKLY MEMORIALS
The sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament
reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful
way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the
heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one,
either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of
$10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will
publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help
supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting
memorial.

ALL CLASS REUNION
St. Martha Parish School will be hosting an
All Class Reunion on Friday, January 9th
at Katie O’Donnell’s located at 4501
Woodhaven Road, Philadelphia, PA. Let
your family, friends and classmates know to join us for a great
night out. No tickets will be sold for this event but there will be
a cash bar and a 50/50 raffle.

During this time of preparation for Christmas, we
ask for your help. If anyone is able to give a
donation, or script, to assist the needy families in
our parish, it would really be appreciated. Be
assured, donations will help with very basic needs such as food
and clothing. Unemployment continues to be on the rise as
well as sickness within families. We are able to help many
families in our parish through your generosity. Place your
donation in an envelope marked Must Be Santa. You can mail
it, put it in the Sunday collection basket or turn it into the
rectory in care of Sister Claire. Thank you and be assured you
will be remembered in prayer. God bless your generosity.
SPIRITUAL SUPPORT SYSTEM
If you are unable to attend Sunday Mass regularly, due to
advancing years or health reasons, please call the Parish Office.
An initial visit will be set up through Sister Claire McMahon,
IHM, for a monthly visit by our priests, deacon and pastoral
staff, and a weekly visit by an extraordinary minister of the
Eucharist. If a neighbor or family member in our parish is
interested, please ask them if they would like you to call for this
spiritual support.
Also, if you, or someone in our parish is in the hospital, we
would appreciate being informed. H.I.P.P. laws prevent us
from knowing who is hospitalized unless the patient or another
person lets us know. On the Sunday before a planned
admission, ask one of the priests to administer the Anointing of
the Sick.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS
Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery
of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and become God’s own
children, members of the family we call Church. You may
arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons
after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are
required (and godparents invited but not required) to attend a
Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday
evening at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a
couple who have presented children for baptism give an
overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical
suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day.
Pre-Jordan Class will be held on the following dates:
January 15, March 12, May 21 and July 16. Consider
coming to the class before your baby is born, when things are
just a bit less hectic.
PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP
It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be
registered and active members of the parish. Circumstances
sometimes change registration status. If you can answer “yes”
to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are
registered correctly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away
from you parental home (not just for college)? (2) Have you
recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with
your parents, over eighteen, and not receiving your own
mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the
rectory office to update your registration status. New families
moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass.

WHAT YOU MAY NOT REALIZE ABOUT SCRIP
Each school family is required to purchase an average of $50
weekly in scrip. Considering weekly bills such as gasoline and
food, this is pretty simple to do... most families will exceed this
minimum when they realize they are piling up tuition credits
simply by making a quick stop at the scrip office.
Here is what you might not realize: anyone can purchase scrip!
You could apply it to a grandchild’s tuition, or a friend or
neighbor, or to the parish tuition fund, so a deserving family
can get some help along the way. Scrip is one of those quiet
fundraisers which can benefit not only our families but our
parish. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up today!
Why make the trip to the stores at a mall just to buy a gift card?
Our scrip office probably has what you want!

“CARE AND SHARE” MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ITEMS
AVAILABLE
Our parishioners have been very generous in their response to
“Care and Share”. If you or someone you know is in need of a
walker, bath chair, etc., please check the “Care and Share” poster on the vestibule bulletin board.
What you need, even if you already have one but could use
another one, could be available at low cost or free.
If you have an item that you no longer need and someone else
could use please post on the poster.
ARE YOU A MANDATED REPORTER?
As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environments, the
Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training
curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect.
These new policies reflect the Church’s commitment to always
do more, as well as new Pennsylvania laws that go into effect
on December 31, 2014. If you have direct contact with
children, you may be a mandated reporter. Deacon Steve is our
Safe Environment Coordinator and will be working with our
parish in the coming weeks to educate mandated reporters
about their responsibilities and how to properly report child
abuse to ChildLine, PA’s 24-hour child abuse reporting hotline.
In the meantime, he can be reached at 215-632-3720 with any
questions. Information is also available at
www.childyouthprotection.org. As we continue to do all we
can to keep our children safe, also know that the Office for
Child and Youth Protection provides services, resources and
support toward healing for victims and survivors of child sexual abuse and their families. Victim services can be reached at

MOTHER’S PRAYER GROUP
The Mother’s Prayer Group at St. Martha’s meets on the first
and third Monday’s of the month. We meet from 7:30-8:30 in
the Chapel on the first floor of the school. We pray for our
children and the intentions of each other. Join us! If you need
additional information, contact Margaret Breen at

WANTED - WOMEN WHO LOVE!
Women who have the time to give of themselves through the art
of crocheting/knitting. More hands are needed to continue our
ministry. Please consider helping others know that God is near
through the warmth of a prayer shawl. There is so much joy in
this ministry. Through our work, a person who is grieving, ill
or just in need of God’s love will receive a blessed prayer
shawl. So if you know of anyone who is in need of
consolation, who needs to feel God’s arms wrapped around
them and would gain comfort from this gift of love, please do
not hesitate to contact Carol Lynn Steffen at 215-637-2531.
