Keynote Session 1: IoT and Interactive Design
Dr. Yi-Bing Lin, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan
Session Chair: Prof. Jang-Ping Sheu
Abstract
In recent years, many Internet of Things (IoT) have been used in applications such as money flow, logistics
flow, people flow, interactive art design, and so on. To manage these increasing disparate devices and
connectivity options, ETSI has specified end-to-end M2M system architecture for IoT applications. Based on
this architecture we develop an IoT DEvice FEature MAnagement (DEFEMA) system to manage IoT devices.
In our approach, an IoT device is characterized by its “features” (e.g., temperature, vibration, display, etc.)
that are manipulated by the network applications. If a network application handles the individual device
features independently, then we can write a software module for each device feature, and the network
application can be simply constructed by including these brick-like device feature modules. In this talk,
we show that based on the concept of device feature, brick-like software modules can provide simple and
efficient mechanism to develop IoT device applications and interactions.

Keynote Session 2: TSUBAME3.0 towards 4.0 and Toward Convergence of Extreme Computing and Big Data
Dr. Satoshi Matsuoka, Professor of Global Scientific Information and Computing Center, Tokyo Institute of
Technology, Japan
Session Chair: Prof. Yeh-Ching Chung
Abstract
Rapid growth in the use cases and demands for extreme computing and huge data processing is leading
to convergence of the two infrastructures. Tokyo Tech.’s TSUBAME3.0, a 2016 successor to the highly
successful TSUBAME2/2.5, will aim to deploy a series of innovative technologies, including ultra-efficient
liquid cooling and power control, petabytes of non-volatile memory, as well as low cost Petabit-class
interconnect. To address the challenges of such technology adoption, proper system architecture, software
stack, and algorithm must be designed and developed; these are being addressed by several of our
ongoing research projects as well as prototypes, such as the TSUBAME-KFC prototype which became #1
in the world in power efficiency on the Green500 twice in a row, the Billion-way Resiliency project that
is investigating effective methods for future resilient supercomputers, as well as the Extreme Big Data
(EBD) project which is looking at co-design development of convergent system stack given future data and
computing workloads. These will lead to further innovations in the 2020s era TSUBAME4.0, which will have
even more aggressive technologies to make datacenters of today be completely obsolete.
Biography
Satoshi Matsuoka has been a Full Professor at the Global Scientific Information
and Computing Center (GSIC), a Japanese national supercomputing center
hosted by the Tokyo Institute of Technology, since 2001. He received his Ph. D.
from the University of Tokyo in 1993. He is the leader of the TSUBAME series
of supercomputers, including TSUBAME2.0 which was the first supercomputer
in Japan to exceed Petaflop performance and became the 4th fastest in
the world on the Top500 in Nov. 2010, as well as the recent TSUBAME-KFC
becoming #1 in the world for power efficiency for both the Green 500 and
Green Graph 500 lists in Nov. 2013. He is also currently leading several major
supercomputing research projects, such as the MEXT Green Supercomputing,
JSPS Billion-Scale Supercomputer Resilience, as well as the JST-CREST Extreme
Big Data. He has written over 500 articles according to Google Scholar, and
chaired numerous ACM/IEEE conferences, most recently the overall Technical
Program Chair at the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference (SC13) in 2013.
He is a fellow of the ACM and European ISC, and has won many awards,
including the JSPS Prize from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science in
2006, awarded by his Highness Prince Akishino, the ACM Gordon Bell Prize
in 2011, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2012, and recently the
2014 IEEE-CS Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award, the highest prestige in the
field of HPC.

Keynote Session 3: Personalized Smart Health and Big Data Cyber Infrastructure
Dr. John Yen, University Professor and Director of Strategic Research Initiatives, College of Information
Sciences and Technology (IST), Pennsylvania State University, USA
Session Chair: Prof. Yanmin Zhu
Abstract
The explosion of online social interactions through social media and the rapidly increasing availability
and adoption of self-monitoring wearable devices have provided the perfect opportunity to harvest them
for developing, studying, and disseminating a wide range of personalized smart health applications and
services. What are the implications of these emerging systems for needed cyber infrastructure? How well
the recent developments of big data cyber infrastructures address these needs? Drawing from insights
obtained through related existing and ongoing research projects regarding social media mining, predictive
modeling, and big data, I will discuss and address these questions with the goal to foster a conversation
regarding the needs of cyber infrastructure of emerging large-scale personalized smart health systems.
Biography
John Yen is University Professor and Director of Strategic Research Initiatives
at College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at the Pennsylvania
State University. He received his PhD in Computer Science from University of
California, Berkeley (1986), M.S. in Computer Science from University of Santa
Clara (1982), and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University
(1980). From 1986 to 1989, he conducted artificial intelligence research at
University of Southern California/Information Sciences Institute. He was on the
faculty of Computer Science Department and the founding director of Center
for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Research at Texas A&M University from
1989 to 2001. In 2001, he joined the young college (IST) at Penn State, which
was created for fostering interdisciplinary research and education for the
new information age. Since then, he has served as Professor-in-Charge and
Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs of the college. Through
partnership with American Cancer Society and Penn State Hershey Cancer
Institute, he co-founded the Cancer Informatics Initiative for conducting
research to harvest social media for personalized smart health systems. He
received the NSF Young Investigator Award in 1992 and IBM Faculty Award in
2012. He is a senior member of AAAI and a Fellow of IEEE.
