We welcome all to join us for worship and invite you to become a part of our parish family.
New members are asked to call the Parish Center to schedule an appointment for registration.
Registration is required for admission to our programs of Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation for Baptism, First Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation and Marriage. Eligibility certificates for Sponsorship for Baptism and Confirmation are issued to registered parishioners who are practicing Catholics. Couples planning to be married, or those desiring to
schedule a Baptism are asked to call the Parish Center to schedule an appointment to speak
with a priest. The Parish Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm
(closing from noon to 1 pm for lunch and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm for dinner), Friday from 9 am to
5 pm (closing from noon to 1 pm for lunch), Saturday from 9 am to Noon and Sunday from
8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Priests are available after building hours for emergencies only by calling
215.368.0220. Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is available in the Saint Katharine Drexel Adoration Chapel.

with a parish priest and the date and time are reserved. Attendance at a Marriage Preparation program is required in accord with Archdiocesan policy.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Dear friends / Mis amigos queridos,
On this final Sunday of the Advent season, it is fitting that Mary should take the attention as the vehicle
through whom God made good on His promises to Israel. After centuries of waiting, “in the fullness of time” God
stepped into human affairs, and sent His Son to be born of her. The Annunciation account in theGospel for today
describes the way she accepted what was being asked of her by God.
A woman I know keeps a small glass box on her dresser in front of her crucifix and statue of the Blessed
Mother. Whenever someone asks her to pray for a particular person, she puts a tiny note with the person’s name
on it in the box. In this way she feels she is entrusting the person to the prayer of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. To
her, she has special devotion; from her, she has received countless answers to prayer. Mary is more like a mother to
her than Jesus; after all, both her parents were human, and she was born and died in the normal ways.
But Mary was always and unusually reliable to God. Whatever pitches were thrown at her she did not
duck. She was able to endure all the difficulties of her pregnancy, and deliver a singular child, whom she loved reliably through all the years of His incredibly controversial life. Whatever He needed, she was there for Him. When
life was cut down and the crowds turned, Mary was there; when He died on the cross, Mary was there; when they
buried Him in a tomb, she was there; and when they could not find Him after three days, she was there. And as
daring as it is to presume on Mary’s reliability, my friend knows that Mary will remember the persons whose names
have been placed in a glass box, even when she forgets.
All of Mary’s life was a series of annunciations, particularly after the “big” ask that is described in this weekend’s Gospel. God constantly called her to be the reflection of His compassion for the world and to persevere in
faith. She mirrored in her life the providence of our loving God to all people. God asks the same reliability of each
one of us in living out our baptismal identities as His sons and daughters. The experience of Mary is often somewhat analogous to our own. You and I must discern God’s will for our lives, and then consider how we will answer
whatever is asked of us. Discernment of this type is serious work – a hard process that demands time, prayer and
thoughtfulness. In His annunciations to us, we try to sort out and make sense of what is often a mess in our lives.
Today’s Gospel offers Mary’s reliable faith and trust as an example for when we need to be open to God’s will. Our
God is always with us and there is no need to fear. Like Mary, you and I have been called to give birth to His Son
in our own way, in our own time, and in our own place. Maybe that is one of the reasons why the Marian stories in
the Gospels never seem to get old and are always packed with more than when they are first examined.

Have you experienced anything different from your observance of this year’s Advent? As we approach the
end of the season and enter into Christmastide it might be a good exercise to consider how well you and I have cooperated in putting into reality the Baptist’s call to make ready a way for the Lord.
Something as banal as Christmas cards can help. Remember them? In the pre-email days, they were correspondences we looked forward to receiving in the mailboxes outside our homes. The cards we made as children
proudly hung on the refrigerator door for the twelve days of Christmas, and then were retired to the storage box
that parents seem to have for each one of their children. (You know the ones: they hold report cards, and perfect
attendance certificates, art projects and Mothers’ Day gifts and the like.) After them came the little cards we exchanged with our classmates just before the Christmas vacation break. In high school/college the cards were funnier – sometimes downright insulting! – to friends and neighborhood buddies. And then the really special cards were
exchanged, the ones expressing special love to the one who might one day become a wife or husband. After that,
two lists became one and more compartmentalized: relatives, neighbors, high school friends, college friends, kid’s
teachers and coaches, work contacts. Maybe you are one who likes to send out the “year in review” letter inside
your cards, detailing the children’s achievements and the antics of your young grandchildren.
By midlife the list peaks, and then it changes over the years as people move in and out of your personal radar. Cards once postmarked successfully begin to come back as “undeliverable.” After retirements, there are fewer
names to send to since mail service to eternity does not exist yet. At the end, when the grandchildren have children
and the original list has been trimmed down to a paltry level of what it once was, the writing of Christmas cards
becomes bittersweet, a time of cherished memories and prayerful gratitude.

Center Chapel the Filipino Catholic Community will
be celebrating the 8th of the novena of Masses
(Simbang Gabi) in preparation for Christmas, 2014.

this community, continuing their Filipino tradition of

2015 MARCH FOR LIFE
The March for Life will be on Thursday, January 22,
2015. The cost is $35 for adults and $25 for school
children. The bus will depart from the Church parking lot at 5:30 am. Our group will be attending the
10 am Philadelphia Archdiocese Mass at the Shrine.
Following Mass will be lunch on your own and the
March. For those who would like to attend but not
participate in the walk, a retreat will be lead by Sr.
Barbara at the Shrine. Dinner will be provided on
the return trip and we hope to arrive back at Church
by 9:30 pm. Please consider making the time, as a
family if possible, to attend this very powerful and

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, PIUS IX COUNCIL NEWS
Monthly Breakfast
On Sunday December 28 from 8 am to 12 noon, the Knights will host their monthly Breakfast with the
Knights. It is an all you can eat buffet including made to order omelets and a selection of hot and cold
entrees. $9 for Adults, $8 for Seniors, $6 for Children ages 5 to 12. Active duty Fire, Police, Military and
children under 5 eat free! Knights of Columbus hall is located at 258 West 8th Street in Lansdale, on the

Free Throw Competition
On Sunday January 18 from 1 to 5 pm, the Knights will host the Annual Knights of Columbus Free
Throw Competition at the Drexel Hall gymnasium of the St. Maria Goretti Parish center located at 1601
Derstine Road in Hatfield, PA. All Boys and Girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate at this local level

Metanoia is an active community of Catholic young
adults in Western Montgomery County. The group

CATHEDRAL AMBASSADORS NEEDED
The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul conducts an evangelization ministry with Cathedral Ambassadors. This enthusiastic group of trained Ambassadors staffs the Basilica every day of the week and is
comprised of volunteer parishioners from all over the
diocese. They answer questions, offer assistance and
give tours. Cathedral Ambassadors provide a personal presence in the Basilica and put a face on the
Church. They are assigned 4 hour shifts. The schedule is flexible—one day or more a month. They are

Does not an old-fashioned Christmas card list mirror the reality of life? Our Advents are times of discovery,
growth, loss and change. How much quicker does life change than it feels as we are living through it! We do not
realize just how fast at that time. While moving us forward, Advent is also about now. Now is the time for loving
spouses, children, respecting co-workers and neighbors. Now is the time for the hugs and the “I love you” cards,
and now is the time to make the kind of memories that will live on well after we have sent our last Christmas card.

Remember to consult the mailing you should have received with the schedules for Christmas Masses. We
look forward to having you with us, and bring a friend and family members. We all know that Wednesday through
Friday are going to be hectic and will leave us frenetic, but do not let the pressures of the buying/preparing/
cooking/wrapping/visiting/hosting deter you from thanking God for the gift that the infant Jesus is to us.
St. Augustine’s homilies are some of the oldest extant Christian texts. In one of his Christmas homilies, the
saint offers these inspiring words (dated between 391-400 AD), which I pass on to you to end this week’s message.
It is amazing and beautiful praise, which focuses on the paradox of the infant birth:
So let us proclaim loudly the day of the day! Let us proclaim his salvation! Let us tell the nations about his
glory and tell every kind of people about what makes him so shocking. He is lying in a barn, but he contains the whole world. He is breastfed, but feeds angels. He is wrapped up in rags, but clothes us with immortality. He gets milk to drink, but he is revered. He could not find a place in an inn, but he made a temple for himself in the hearts of those who believe. Strength became weak so that weakness could become
strong. So rather than underestimating his birth in the flesh, we should be shocked! We should recognize
how great the height of humility was in that birth, all for our sake. We should let it set us ablaze with love,
so that we can come to his eternity. [St. Augustine, Sermon 190]

¿Qué significa para el Papa la Navidad? Es el encuentro con Jesús.
Dios siempre ha buscado a su pueblo, lo ha guiado, lo ha custodiado,
ha prometido que le estará siempre cerca. En el Libro del Deuteronomio leemos que Dios camina con nosotros, nos guía de la mano como
un papá con su hijo.
Esto es hermoso. La Navidad es el encuentro de Dios con su pueblo. Y
también es una consolación, un misterio de consolación. Muchas
veces, después de la misa de Nochebuena, pasé algunas horas solo, en
la capilla, antes de celebrar la misa de la aurora, con un sentimiento
de profunda consolación y paz. Recuerdo una vez aquí en Roma, creo
que era la Navidad de 1974, en una noche de oración después de la
misa en la residencia del Centro Astalli. Para mí la Navidad siempre
ha sido esto: contemplar la visita de Dios a su pueblo.
¿Cuál es el mensaje de la Navidad para las personas de hoy?
Nos habla de la ternura y de la esperanza. Dios, al encontrarse con
nosotros, nos dice dos cosas.
• La primera: tengan esperanza. Dios siempre abre las puertas, no las
cierra nunca. Es el papá que nos abre las puertas.
• Segunda: no tengan miedo de la ternura. Cuando los cristianos se
olvidan de la esperanza y de la ternura se vuelven una Iglesia fría, que
no sabe dónde ir y se enreda en las ideologías, en las actitudes mundanas. Mientras la sencillez de Dios te dice: sigue adelante, yo soy un
Padre que te acaricia.
• Tengo miedo cuando los cristianos pierden la esperanza y la capacidad de abrazar y acariciar. Tal vez por esto, viendo hacia el futuro,
hablo a menudo sobre los niños y los ancianos, es decir los más indefensos. En mi vida como sacerdote, yendo a la parroquia, siempre
traté de transmitir esta ternura, sobre todo a los niños y a los ancianos.
Me hace bien, y pienso en la ternura que Dios tiene por nosotros.

Bautismos – Clases bautismales serán el primer Domingo de cada mes
después de la misa. Inscríbase por anticipado con el Padre Forlano.
La próxima clase bautismal es el 4 de enero. Todos los que necesitan
bautizar a un niño o una niña o quieren ser padrino o madrina deben
asistir. Normalmente, se celebran los bautismos durante la misa del
segundo y cuarto Domingo del mes. Para ser padrino/madrina o recibir una carta de elegibilidad, una persona tiene que ser: 1) Un Católico
practicante con un mínimo de 16 años de edad y haya recibido todos
los sacramentos de iniciación - bautismo, confirmación, y comunión. 2)
Registrado en la parroquia o bien conocido en la comunidad de la
Iglesia. 3) Casado por la iglesia católica o soltero sin vivir en unión
libre. 4) Hay que asistir a la Misa. 5) Deben tener sus propios hijos
confirmados si tienen la edad.
El Sacramento de Reconciliación se ofrece los sábados a las 8:30 a.m. y
4:00 p.m. y los domingos 12:30 - 12:50 p.m. o por cita con Padre Forlano o Padre Miguel.
El Matrimonio – Hable con Padre Forlano más que 6 meses antes de
