If you’ve no place to go, stay home in the wet or the snow. The ice is always reforming, and you slip without much warning. So if you’re smart, don’t go and slip in the icy flow. Now there’s time you can’t avoid it--the mailbox, food, or pills. So be careful to employ it--all your wily safety skills. Check for ice that may lie before you, and walk the grass wherever you can. Spread the ice melt you got from M&M. Patience is your plan. Remember if you fall down, a hospital next you’ll see, And you get no relief from insurance…“Tort Immunity.”* So take precious care of yourself, keep a neighbor close at hand. Relax, enjoy the winter; that’s nature’s simple plan. ICE MELT IS AVAILABLE AT THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE. REPORT ALL DANGEROUS SITUATIONS TO TAYLOR MANAGEMENT. *Tort Immunity generally means that residents give up the right to sue Four Seasons for simple negligence. This was done to minimize insurance claims. Gross negligence is present when Four Seasons is formally advised of a dangerous condition and fails to respond. The lesson: be careful, report dangers, don’t sue, and have a warm safe winter. Jack Chambers, President Condominium Board Farmers Loves Seniors! It takes a lot of time and work, but with the help of our on-site Engineer, Victor Fronzo, Taylor Management, and the Board of Trustees, we hope that our volunteer group will meet that goal. The names of our new members, returning members, Management liaison, Board of Trustees liaison, and our Chairman for 2015 will be published in the next issue of this magazine. The “punch list” of items which put the finishing touches on the Pond 9 (Hole 9) golf course area has been completed. The only remaining item is to make the slope of the bridge safer for all residents. Our Engineers and consultants are working on possible solutions that will reduce the incline. Those of you who have visited the site have seen a new railing system where the new path connects with the old one next to the shuffleboard courts, the aeration system which keeps the water clean, the sprinkler system that will keep all the new plants, shrubs, and grass in good condition, benches in and around the “park” setting, as well as aesthetically-placed lighting on the waterfall and the entire Pond 9 area. It is truly a transformed area of our community for all to enjoy. Three proposals were received for the road evaluation project for this new year, and several discussions are on the agenda for this matter. Some time in the spring we will be getting ready to upgrade major portions of our walking (Vita) paths. The walking path is a complex project requiring a great deal of planning and discussion. This project may have to be done in yearly phases because we have about four miles of paths to fix or replace. Engineering designs and recommendations to address drainage problems brought to our attention will also be implemented in the spring. When our golfers get back to the course, they will see that the golf cart bridge and parking guardrail has new wood and has been wood-stained by the Maintenance Department. The Shuffleboard area may need new concrete work in order to upgrade the area. That will probably be taken care of when sidewalks and driveway aprons are repaired. If you notice street or roadway lamps out, please report the location to the Management Office so JCP&L can be notified. Each pole has an identifying number on it. Thank you for your help in this matter. Let’s hope we can stay within our budget for snow plowing this year! HAPPY VIEWING! Dorothy Rohland LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE In 2015 we will establish a database in the Management Office of survey maps for all private lots in Four Seasons. Any future Work Orders submitted by owners of private lots must be accompanied by a survey map. The office will copy your survey for their files. Many Work Orders are delayed because we need to accurately establish the private/common line. We encourage you to bring your survey map to the Management Office now so that we will be ready to respond quickly next spring. Thank you. Ramona Lucadamo, Chairperson PAGE 11 PAGE 12 FOUR SEASONS TIMES JANUARY 2015 Activities/Clubs BOCCE January brings us ice and snow. February feels like five below. March is wet and wild. April gives us a smile. May to August are the best of all, That’s when we play... BOCCE BALL! September to December all end in “ber” (brrrrr) Enough already with clothes of fur! Fur hats, fur gloves, fur coats, fur boots, fur slippers....I wish I could put them all away until next fall or go south and get away from it all! I know bocce is probably the furthest thing from our mind right now. If you’re on the “wait list,” be assured that I haven’t forgotten you. I will be calling you--eventually. As of now, three nights of play have nine teams. We need an even number on each night so no team gets a “bye-bye.” That’s where the “wait list” comes in handy. I will be assembling new teams from that list so that there will be an even number of teams playing every night. There is never a limit to the wait list. Call me if you want to play. Do you want to play on our travel team? It is open to the whole community, especially the MEN. We are always looking for good men! We play every Wednesday morning (9:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon), starting the first week in May and ending the end of August. Half of our games are played at home and the other half are played away (Original Leisure Village, Leisure Knoll, Leisure Village West, Lake Ridge, Renaissance, West Lake, Greenbriar, South Knolls, Metedeconk, Crestwood, and Holiday City). Believe it or not, we do play for a trophy (which we won in 2005)! Here’s to a healthy, wealthy and wonderful 2015! DEBORAH HOSPITAL 1980’s: In 1980, Dr. Vladir Maranhao performed Deborah’s first (balloon) angioplasty. This put Deborah in the category of pioneer in Clinical Cardiology. The Deborah Research Institute was formally established in 1981 in the Robert Wood Johnson Jr. Laboratories on the Deborah Campus. The scientists conduct basic, applied, and clinical research to learn the causes and develop treatments of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. In 1984, Deborah became the first hospital on the East Coast and the second in the nation to install a CT scanner, which allows physicians to view and evaluate the heart in motion. Our meeting on November 21st was a pure delight, thanks to Gloria Padget, dance instructor. We were entertained by the Glorigirls, a group of (youthful) senior citizens from Whiting, NJ. We applaud them on their precision dancing and outstanding costumes. In addition, there were several specialty groups performing dances including country-western and jitterbug (poodle skirt and all). There also was singing and a comedian for laughs. Thank you, Chomie Persson for arranging this great meeting. It is a New Year, so let us all do what we do best--have a banner year in fund-raising for Deborah Hospital. Please pay your dues for 2015. We will not have a February meeting. See you in March. We wish everyone in Four Seasons Community a year of good health, happiness, and good fortune. Hilda Sutton Carol MacDonald, Bocce Chairperson Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average... which means, you have met your New Year’s resolution. ~ Jay Leno PAGE 13 PAGE 14 FOUR SEASONS TIMES JANUARY 2015 CHORUS AND THEATER CLUBS ROCK & ROLL CLUB When you read this article, 2014 will be relegated to memory and we will be looking forward (hopefully) to enjoying all the better things that this New Year can bring. The January issue is traditionally pictorial and affords us the opportunity to recall all the varied and fun-filled events that we participated in and enjoyed in the past year. As we have said so often before, we hope that pictures of our performances will bring smiles of remembrance to all. We thank you for your attendance, support, and kind remarks for our efforts--they are deeply appreciated. We look forward to entertaining all of you again in this New Year. I was having a hard time coming up with a theme for the, as usual, incredible Rock & Roll concert of this past November 21st. Leave it to my husband, Joel, to come up with a thought that is both true and descriptive of the night’s events... OK, so who knew that there is an actual condition in Australia called “Mango Madness”?? I can envision everyone running for a dictionary right now. I’ll save you some steps…the definition is, “The irrational behavior of a person suffering from the effects of living in tropical heat.” That best describes the collective reaction to the music of The Mangoes! To watch so many of our friends dancing with the fervor of a group at a Sweet Sixteen party was both fun and nostalgic. My favorite time was when all the people on the floor formed a circle and began “line dancing” to some countrythemed songs that the band played. Everyone was smiling and laughing and “inventing” new moves to go with the music. I can’t help thinking about the aches that must have greeted many of the carousers the following morning, although, like childbirth, those aches must have brought smiles to the faces of the attendees. BRAVO! Another sparkling night that warmed a chilly room and once again left us all with a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane at Four Seasons! Roz Obolsky JEWISH CULTURAL CLUB We at the Jewish Cultural Club wish all of our Four Seasons friends a very Healthy and Happy New Year. We hope everyone had a joyous holiday season. In 2014 we had a wide range of fun and entertaining programs, thanks to the hard work of so many of our members. Whether in front of the audience or behind the scenes, they all did a great job and a mere “thank you” is not enough to express how much they are appreciated. In November we were entertained by our talented Four Seasons Players who kept us “in stitches,” laughing and enjoying ourselves. December found us enjoying our wonderful Chanukah Party, which is always a wonderful afternoon. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at 1 PM; all are welcome to join us. Dues are $15.00 for the year, with an admission fee of $3.00. We’re looking forward to meeting new members and seeing our “seasoned” ones. running or flushes on its own during the day or night, before calling a plumber you should check a few things on your own. To begin with, check the overflow tube to make sure that the water level in the tank is below the top of the overflow tube by at least half an inch. The water height can be changed by adjusting the float, which is either a ball or floating cup. The length of chain that lifts the flapper valve is important. The flapper valve will not open full if it is too long, or it might not open enough if it is too short. The flapper valve itself may be worn at the seal, allowing water to flow past it. If this is the case, bring the flapper valve to a local plumbing supply house for an exact replacement. A one-size-fits-all does not necessarily fit all! Know the model of the fixture before you go. Smoke Detectors It is important, when replacing batteries in your smoke detectors or replacing the entire unit, that all the smoke detectors are “tied in” electrically, so in case of an emergency they all sound to alert you that there is a problem somewhere. The procedure is simple. marty Lukso Directors Club Sales Associate Weichert realtors Pt. Want to work with an amicable, patient and committed full time top producing professional? Want to work with the beST? Then call mArTy LuKSo, your Five Star Professional Award winning agent for a third straight year as voted by my clients for outstanding service and published in NJ Monthly Magazine 2012, 2013, and again in 2014 in the Best of the Best editions. Most homes here at Four Seasons have four smoke detectors (don’t forget the one in the attic); but there may be more depending on your model. After replacing the first battery, press and hold the reset button for three seconds till it beeps. Go to the next unit and do the same, holding the test button in for about three seconds. The first and second unit should sound an alert. Do the same with the third and fourth units. By the fourth (or last) unit, all the smoke detectors will sound. They will beep for about 30 seconds and will then be tied together electrically. (Let others in the house know what you are doing--it does get noisy when all the alarms are sounding!) You may want to install a stand-alone smoke detector in your utility room and garage ceilings. These two will not be tied to the other four. You never know when you might need them. They all take a nine-volt battery. Fall Prevention Here are some fall prevention tips that were put out by the Ocean Medical Center. • Remove hazards like throw rugs. • Replace carpeting that is torn, loose, or has turned up edges. • Have good lighting throughout your home. • Use a night light in hallways and bathrooms. • If you use a cane or walker, don’t use furniture for support. • Keep stairs, if you have them, clear of objects. • Place non-skid decals or mat in the tub or shower. • Install grab bars in shower and near toilet. • Be mindful of wet surfaces. • Wear shoes or slippers that fit well and stay securely on your feet. • If you must, use a step stool with handrails-not a chair. Where Are My Battery and Jumper Posts? Some car manufacturers are getting very “cute” when placing the battery in your car. It may be buried in the trunk, behind the rear seat, or in the engine compartment. One Chrysler Concorde I owned had the battery hidden on a shelf behind the front right wheel which had to be removed in order to reach it. Removal of the fender cowl was also necessary. The positive and negative terminals are in the engine compartment; you should know their location in case you need a jump start. Check your manual. (Thanks, Jean H. for the tip.) As a consumer, you are protected by the Consumer Fraud Act, whether ordering merchandise by mail order, having furniture delivered, or buying merchandise in a store. Mail Order If you purchase merchandise by mail order, the law says you must receive your order within six (6) weeks or less. If the business is not able to send you the merchandise you ordered, it is required to send you notice advising you of the delay, and then it must substitute merchandise of equal or superior quality for the merchandise you ordered or offer to send you a full refund. Delivery of Household Furniture With regard to household furniture, household furniture includes, but is not limited to, furniture, major electrical appliances, and items such as carpets and drapes. When you purchase household furniture and sign a contract or sales order to have your furniture delivered, the contract form must contain the following sentence in bold type: “The merchandise you have ordered is promised for delivery to you on or before _______” and the blank space must be filled in with the date agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller. The retailer is required to deliver your furniture by or on the mutually agreed-upon delivery date, or give you a written notice explaining why the furniture cannot be delivered on the promised date. The written notice must give you the option to cancel your order and receive a full refund or accept delivery of the furniture at a later date. If the store only delivers a portion of your order on the agreed-upon delivery date, you have the option to cancel the order and receive a full refund or accept the remaining merchandise at a later date. If the items are damaged when they are delivered or are not the exact size, style, or color you ordered, you have the option of accepting the furniture or returning it and receiving a full refund. *All plumbing work performed by licensed plumber * All electrical work performed by licensed electrician PAGE 23 24 73 1F Tom Dedicated to your skin, hair & nails. To me an elevator is just a box held up by a few ropes. Yes, I know they generally work very well and few people are intimidated by them--but I am! I will not go into an elevator alone, and when job or doctor hunting, before I research salary and/or credentials, I inquire about location. Fortunately my last job, managing a synagogue, was in a one-story building. Would you call this a phobia? Where do phobias come from? My problem stemmed from being assaulted in--you guessed it--an elevator. Although I have managed to overcome other assaults, mostly mental, I have not even tried to deal with this one. After all, for all of my adult life I have lived in private homes, so this method of “transportation” has not been a problem. If, indeed, I am invited to a party in an apartment building, or simply must visit the dentist in a high-rise, my understanding husband will happily escort me. I admit I will have to defer to those better informed to explain exactly how, when, and why someone becomes “phobic.” My obsession with order in my home might be more a reaction to a chaotic childhood than a phobia….who knows?? A few friends of mine must sit against the wall when dining in a restaurant. If such seating is not available, their evening is ruined. Were they influenced in a past life by Wild Bill Hickok,* or did their family have something to do with this “mishagas”**? As you can see, if it does not affect me, it is a “mishagas.” (Kind of self-serving, I know!) Fear of heights, fear of animals, fear of dentists, etc. all make sense to me. But are they phobias or rational fears? How strongly we wish to correct what ails us depends on how much our lives are affected by our “mishagas,” phobias, or whatever you label them, I suppose. In my case, however, I have been assured there will be no elevators at my funeral. After that, who knows… Rae *Wild Bill Hickock would only sit against the wall for fear of being shot in the back. **craziness; silliness Please Patronize Our Advertisers Lic # 9677 GAron T. Practice it as often as you like or need: Close your eyes and relax. Imagine yourself in a safe healing place of your own design and choosing. Next, let yourself be aware of whatever feelings, sensations, or images arise, as your focus on what has been upsetting you. As you connect with the negativity, make a tight fist with your left hand for a few moments. Relax your fist. Open then close your eyes. Breathe in and out deeply. Next, connect with a happy memory--one where you felt loved, smart, and secure. As you reconnect with those pleasant images, make a fist with your right hand for a few moments. Release the fist. Open and then close your eyes. Breathe in and out deeply. Now draw in a deep breath and make a fist with both hands at the same time. Hold for a count of ten. Exhale and relax your fists. Open your eyes and think again about the negative thought, feeling, image, memory, or sensation. Notice how much of a shift has occurred. Do you feel less upset now? Practice this technique frequently to neutralize negative thoughts and feelings. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to prepare for what lies ahead for us, good or bad? Being human, we really are only interested in the better things that await us and hope to find the strength to deal with whatever is less than desirable, should it occur. These are the thoughts I’m dealing with as I write this article in November 2014 for your eyes to peruse in January 2015. With so many in this community heading to warmer climes in the next few weeks, or off to celebrate the holidays with family in other parts of the country, I’ll envision for all, from that imaginary globe in my brain a condition that emanates from a beloved Yiddish expression that translates to “GO IN GOOD HEALTH AND RETURN IN GOOD HEALTH.” May we all enter 2015 in the best of all situations and continue to share this special time in life with whatever good we prophesize for ourselves and each other. Happy New Year to one and all. Do you or anyone you know have a special occasion to attend and want to look gorgeous? ELIZABETH PINIZZOTTO of TOMS RIVER ads-3159 PAGE 37 Special Events MOVIE WITH A MENU “A League of Their Own” On November 8th, the Social Committee presented the movie “A League of Their Own,” with an appropriate menu of hot dogs, hot pretzels, Cracker Jacks, nacho chips, and soda and bottled water. Although we were stuffed from the typical ball park food, we had no trouble making room for ice cream! The 50 people in attendance enjoyed seeing the fact-based story about the members of the first allfemale Baseball League, started during the war years of the 1940’s. In the 1970’s, the League and the women on its teams were finally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. This movie was produced and directed by Penny Marshall and starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell. It was very well done and the acting was superb. It brought to the fore a part of history that is almost forgotten. Many thanks to Anita Sachs for chairing this event, along with her helpers: Judy Schenker, Marge Coco, and Karel Schitzer. They all did a terrific job in bringing this entertaining evening to our residents. Priscilla Greenwald What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year. ~ Vern McLellan MEN’S CLUB SHOWTIME III In the Ballroom, on November 15th, we saw a show that was outstanding, entertaining, and funny! The comedian, Kris Monty, kept the audience roaring with laughter. He has travelled all over the country, and he feels that the best parts of America are New York and New Jersey. He did not tell jokes, but anecdotes that we could identify with. He spoke of family, Thanksgiving dinner, mothers, aging…he covered it all. Headliner Vincent Talarico sang in three languages. We really enjoyed his song choices. He moved us with his sincerity, passion, powerful voice, and commanding stage presence. It does not matter if you have seen him before, you should have seen him that night! In addition, he is an accomplished drummer. He studied drums with jazz great Joe Morello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Shades of Gene Krupa! Vinnie performed a very impressive drum solo worthy of a big Bravo! He then called for two men to come on to the stage and perform dance moves with him. Al Rutsky and Bob Tibus volunteered and they did a fine job as a dancing trio. Vinnie came off the stage and selected Phyllis Hertzendorf to cuddle with and sing to. Phyllis played it to the max. Way to go, girl! This great performer writes his own music and has had songs published. He has performed in numerous plays and musical theater. We must give a big “thank you” to Stan Stack for bringing this show to our theater. We loved it!! Hilda Sutton Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. ~ Albert Einstein Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin. ~ Mother Teresa PTMA 1547-1208 PAGE 38 FOUR SEASONS TIMES JANUARY 2015 BRANSON TRIP--“OH WHAT A TIME IT WAS” Our adventure started quite early, 4:30 a.m., on a lovely day. Our trip to the Philadelphia airport was without incident (none of us would have known had there been one, since we all slept soundly on the way to the airport). We arrived in Springfield, MO and waited for a bus to begin our journey to Branson. Our first show was that very evening, so we didn’t have time to dally, change clothes, or dine. The shows (seven of them) were all very entertaining, and our tour guide secured great seats for us. Meals were included, so we dined daily with a cast of thousands. Branson restaurants are certainly equipped for large groups! The “Magnificent Eleven” (us) enjoyed the shows, which were all lavish with holiday decorations. However, the most highly decorated area were not the stages, but the rest rooms at The Shoji Tabuchi Show. The Men’s Room boasted a pool table, while the Ladies Room glittered with displays and four Christmas trees. As we traveled, the Ozark Mountains greeted us with beautiful colors on the mountainsides; Branson is part of the plateau of the Ozarks. One of the highlights of our tours was The College of the Ozarks. It is unique since the students must also work as part of their curriculum, so it is nicknamed “Hard Work University.” We were told that it is a difficult process to gain entrance to the college. The weather was beautiful during our visit, but turned cold on the day we left. Then the adventure began….Our flight was delayed in Branson due to a bird stuck in the intake area of the plane’s engine. Needless to say, we missed the last flight from Chicago to Philadelphia and had to schedule a flight the next morning at 6:00 am (the only flight that could accommodate all 11 of us). We elected to spend the night in the airport rather than look for a hotel, so we settled in and made ourselves cozy on whatever couches and chairs we could find. We had chits for dining, but all the restaurants were closed and did not open until after we left the next morning. It was a cooperative group and we kept one another entertained until our coach home arrived. Once we boarded, silence descended. We all slept soundly and were very happy to get home and climb into our own beds. The experience sure made us appreciate home, but we all agreed it led to lasting friendships, lots of smiles, and tales to tell about our Branson airport adventure. Make certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice! Even when there is no snow, icy pond make great subjects. Look for ducks, geese, or sea gulls standing on the ice. Ice also makes for great reflection images. Many normal scenes take on a new meaning in the cold of winter After a snowfall there are great shots everywhere. The challenge with snow shots is getting the proper exposure. A very bright snowy scene tricks you camera into thinking there is too much light, so the camera will cut back on exposure. This makes the snow in your images look gray. If you know how to set your exposure compensation, increase the exposure by 1 stop to brighten the snow. If your camera has “scene” modes, use the one for snow or beach. The bare leafless trees make nice silhouette shots and are very good for black and white photography. They are especially effective with a sunrise or sunset behind them. That’s it for this month. As always you can email [email protected] with any photographic questions.
