and are illustrated in the accompanying catalog. The catalog includes essays on each work and
notes the most recent research.
The catalog is available at the
gallery for $45 or postpaid for
$52 in the U.S. The paintings of
the period in the exhibition are
not illustrated in the catalog.
All those passionate about folk
art should not miss A Shared
Legacy: Folk Art in America at
the American Folk Art Museum.
The exhibit includes more than
60 pieces of folk art of the highest quality from the collection of
Barbara L. Gordon, a Washington collector who has been refining her collection for 25 years.
Still lifes, landscapes, allegorical
paintings, portraits, sculpture,
decorated boxes, and furniture
chests are all illustrated in the
accompanying catalog ($65 hardbound). In conjunction with the
exhibition, the Folk Art Museum
is hosting “A Shared Legacy,” a
half-day symposium on January
22 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for members, $15
for non-members, and can be purchased through the museum Web
site. It is sponsored by the Council for Traditional Folk Art. The
event is moderated by Stacy C.
Hollander, the deputy director for
curatorial affairs, chief curator,
and director of exhibitions at the
museum. The speakers all contributed essays for the catalog and
will speak about their research.
They include writer and histori-
an Avis Berman; Cynthia Falk,
a professor at the Cooperstown
Graduate Program; Lisa Minardi,
an assistant curator at the Winterthur Museum and Ph.D. candidate in the History of American
Civilization at the University of
Delaware; Ralph Sessions, director of special projects at the DC
Moore Gallery, New York City,
and previously chief curator at
the museum; and Richard Miller,
former curator at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Muse-
um at Colonial Williamsburg. A
light lunch is included.
Save some time to visit the
Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian
Design Museum at 2 East 91st
Street. Under renovation since
2009, the museum, in the former
Andrew Carnegie residence, has
increased gallery space, collections have been reinstalled, and
the visitor experience has been
enhanced through interactive
technologies. See (www.cooper
hewitt.org) for details.
