WHSPAA Presentation to Leaders

Living Leading Giving
A programme to provide knowledge and experience for sports leaders by
Welwyn Hatfield Sport and Physical Activity Alliance and Welwyn Hatfield
School Sports Partnership and other partners include Welwyn Hatfield Borough
Council, the Welwyn Hatfield sports organisations and clubs.
It is funded by Sport England.

The programme in
more detail – from the
Sport England bid
1. Recruitment: we will work with local
schools and Hertfordshire University to
identify young people aged 16-25 to
become involved in the project.
2. 2. Leadership: our beneficiaries will have
the opportunity to obtain nationally
accredited leadership awards. This will
teach skills such as organisation, team
work and management, essential
attributes to enhance a young person’s
development. We will also provide first
aid qualifications and relevant insurance,
to enable our volunteers to be able to
deliver sessions now and in the future.

3. Physical Activity: our beneficiaries will also
participate in high quality physical activity.
This will reduce health risks associated with
an inactive lifestyle such as obesity and
cardio-vascular disease.
4. Healthy Living: during sessions, healthy
living messages will be delivered including
the benefits of regularly engaging in physical
activity and eating a healthy, balanced diet.
We will also provide education on the
dangers of alcohol and substance misuse,
allowing our beneficiaries to make more
informed choices in the future.

5. Volunteer Experience: our newly qualified
leaders will put their skills into practice by
creating new activity clubs for young people
aged 4-25 years within local community
settings including primary and secondary
schools and youth clubs. The clubs will
provide a range of team-building games and
activities to instil a love of physical activity,
improving the health of the local community
now and in the future. Under 16s will be
mentored by a volunteer aged 18+.
6. Leader Clothing: to ensure that our leaders
feel confident and comfortable when
volunteering we will provide them with
appropriate clothing and equipment, this will
be maintained and kept by WHSPAA.

Volunteering opportunities with local
clubs and sports organisations:
160 WH clubs are registered on WHSPAA
website but not all are able to provide a good
quality leadership experience. They need to
be appropriately organised, registered with
their NGB, insured in case of accidents and
have coaches with experience in supporting
leaders.

The choice of sport
courses will influence
further opportunities
To find the volunteering opportunities and
ultimately potential employment
opportunities it is sensible to choose those
sports most in demand.
The sports (and the clubs) that can provide
this environment in Welwyn Hatfield are
principally:
Badminton, Disability Sport, Gymnastics,
Rugby, Tennis, Football and possibly
Athletics, and Dance. Details can be found
on the Find a Club section of WHSPAA
website: www.welhatsports.org.uk
WH SGP will be liaising with the sports clubs
to provide a definitive list of suitable clubs
and what they offer.

Volunteering
Opportunities
Clubs: The SSP will be contacting the 160 WH clubs to find
out what they can offer, with report in January.
Finesse Leisure, Gosling Sports Park and HAD are all keen
to provide supported volunteering opportunities
- Join In Hertfordshire aims to match people to fun,
interesting and rewarding volunteering opportunities at
clubs and sporting events in Hertfordshire. It is a partnership
between Join In (the London Olympic and Paralympic legacy
charity) and the Herts Sport Partnership, and it was
launched in July.
As well as promoting local volunteering opportunities, Join
In has also become the “go-to” organisation for recruiting
sports volunteers at a national level. From Sport Relief to
the Tour de France, Join In volunteers receive exclusive
opportunities to help out at some of the world’s highest
profile sporting events. Today, more than 130,000 people
are joining in and the numbers are growing every week.
