MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV
In a global offshore fleet of more than 7,500 vessels it is not easy to identify a vessel with the
potential to redefine the scope and efficiency of future marine operations, at least that was until
the delivery of the multipurpose MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV, an innovative, high speed, semi
SWATH catamaran, which is the world’s largest fast crew transfer and offshore support vessel.
MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV was ordered by Caspian Marine Services Limited (CMS) in August
2013 to provide fast, yet cost efficient, crew transfers and hot shot cargos to platforms in
two of Azerbaijan’s expansive offshore fields, the Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli oil field
and the Shah Deniz gas field. After a 10,500 nautical mile delivery voyage from Hobart,
Australia that included transiting the Volga-Don canal system only days before it closed for
approximately five (5) months due to winter ice, MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV has arrived in the
Caspian Sea.
The Incat built 70 metre (229’8”) MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV provides rapid transfer to multiple
offshore platforms for up to 150 offshore workers and 130 tonnes of deck cargo. With a high
speed range exceeding 400 nautical miles and a weather envelope up to 3 metres significant
wave height and 40 knots of wind, MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV delivers major operational and
cost efficiencies over helicopter transfers whilst ensuring more timely hot shot deliveries and
minimal platform downtime.
The MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV hull form and design has been optimized to minimize sea
sickness and to ensure that offshore workers arrive at the platform fit for work. The high
level of on board comfort is achieved through a combination of the vessel’s advanced semiSWATH hull form, a resiliently mounted superstructure cabin, a centre bow and an active ride
control system consisting of a retractable T-Foil, interceptors and yaw stabilisers. The vessel
incorporates a fully integrated, DNV Class approved, Dynamic Positioning (DP2) system.
Crew transfer is completed by an Ampelmann stabilized ‘walk to work’ platform, designed for
safe and level crew transfers between the vessel and the offshore platform. For redundancy,
two x Frog-9 personnel transfer capsules can be secured aft on the main deck. With these
capabilities, CMS expect 98.5% year round reliability in crew transfer operations.
When in transit workers are accommodated on the main and mid decks in extremely
comfortable aircraft style seating that is widely spaced and offers ample legroom. Each
seat has individual meal trays and entertainment system controls to access music or TV.
Alternatively, workers can connect to the internet via the onboard high speed WiFi and satellite
communications. The main deck also features two VIP rooms, vending machines, luggage
space and a large workshop with the mid-deck also incorporating 9 ILO compliant crew
accommodation cabins comprising a total of 14 berths.
On-board noise, vibration and indoor climate are designed in accordance to DNV Comfort
Class COMF –V(3) C(3) and in a testament to the high build standard, Mr Zamig Ismayilov,
Managing Director, Caspian Marine Services commented “I was surprised on the sea trial
that we were moving, I hadn’t even heard the engines start so not only will it carry all that is
required, it is fast, quiet and comfortable.”
Fully loaded, the vessel can operate at service speeds of 30+ knots powered by four MTU
16V4000 engines that drive Hamilton HT-900 water jets through four independent ZF 9050
NR2H gearboxes. Four azimuthing drop-down thrusters are used in manoeuvring and for
DP-2 operation.
MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV is built to the strict DNV Environmental Class “CLEAN-DESIGN”
notation in order to reduce and limit ship pollution into either the air or sea, or by transfer
ashore or accident (eg. SOx, NOx, refrigerants, sewage, garbage, antifouling etc.).
With its “Green Passport”, MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV will commence marine operations
in the Caspian Sea in January 2015, establishing new global benchmarks for operational
efficiency, worker comfort, safety and environmental credentials, whilst at the same time
providing significant operational cost savings.

MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV
MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV is a 70 metre, double-bottomed, semi swath catamaran built by
the renowned Incat Tasmania shipyard, designed by Incat Crowther and with production
drawings completed by Revolution Design.
Taking a clean sheet of paper, the MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV international tender design and
construct project placed a high value on many important elements including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Speed – operating 30+ knot service speeds (as Benjamin Franklin said, “time is money”)
Utilization – reliable year round Caspian Sea operations with minimal downtime
Safety – safe vessel to platform worker transfers, irrespective of weather
Comfort - ensuring workers arrive at the platform fit for work, irrespective of weather
Environment - built to DNV’s CLEAN DESIGN notation
COTS – integrating Commercial Off The Shelf solutions
Transfer of Technology – Leveraging experience in other marine sectors, for instance
ferries and defence
• Cost – reducing operational and capital expenditure
• Access – ensuring the vessel could freely transit in and out of the Caspian Sea despite
the highly restrictive water draft, air draft and beam restrictions of the canals.
• Delivery – into service ASAP
The Tender Submission and Contract Negotiations were coordinated and managed by
Maatsuyker Limited.
Prior to construction, the MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV conceptual design was extensively tested
and optimized using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and tank model testing. This testing ensured
that the MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV would be able to effect crew transfers in conditions of:
• Up to 40 knots of wind
• Up to 3 metres significant wave height

MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV
• Sea water temperatures ranging from 5 to 32 degrees Celsius
• Outside air temperatures ranging from -10 to 45 degrees Celsius
• Additionally, to ensure Dynamic Positioning (DP) Class 2 requirements were exceeded
in a worst-case component or thruster failure.
The design optimization process reduced calm water resistance, improved on station “zero
speed” performance and confirmed a very low MSI incidence in the prevailing Caspian Sea
conditions.
Maatsuyker (www.maatsuyker.com) is a world leading marine consultant for the
sale and charter of new and second hand vessels, arranging vessel finance and for
introducing best practice into ferry, defence and offshore marine operations. In 2012
and 2013 Maatsuyker brokered, by contract value, more high speed vessel sales and
charters than any other company in the world.
Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) has been conducted in accordance to the HSC Code
and Class Society guidelines for the propulsion system, electrical supply, essential services,
control systems and the DP system.
MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV was delivered on time and on budget by Incat Australia and in sea
trials it exceeded its contracted performance specification. Mr Zamig Ismayilov, Managing
Director, Caspian Marine Services commented at the vessels handover “We had heard a
lot about the quality of the Incat ships before we came to Tasmania, and now that we
have seen the finished ship we are very pleased that we decided on Incat; the Muslim
Magomayev they have built for us will be the best vessel of its type in the Caspian Sea.”
He continued, “Everyone in the industry knows that shipbuilders don’t deliver on time, but
Incat has and CMS are very happy that we are taking delivery of our boat not just on time,
but looking and performing very well.”
In the future, fast vessels like MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV will be readily configured for other
offshore roles such as ROV operations, Diving Support, Search & Rescue (SAR), Oil
Recovery, Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel (ERRV), Offshore Maintenance Vessel,
Platform Support Vessel (PSV), Multirole Field Support Vessel ERRV, Maritime Security
Vessel and Safety Standby Vessel.
