WEEKLY CHURCH SUPPORT
True Meaning of Christmas
Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how
it happened. I just finished the household chores for the
night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise
in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front
room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out next to
the fireplace. "What are you doing?" I started to ask. The
words choked up in my throat and I saw he had tears in his
eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager,
boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a
simple statement. "TEACH THE CHILDREN!" I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and
with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag
from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said,
"Teach the children!
Teach them the old meaning of Christmas; the meaning
that has been forgotten. Santa then reached in his bag and
pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle.
"Teach the children the pure green color of the stately fir
tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting
hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making
it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."
He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant
STAR. "The star was the heavenly sign of promises long
ago. God promised a Savior for the world; the star was the
sign of fulfillment of His promise." He then reached into
his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. "The candle symbolizes
Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great
light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."
Once again he reached into his bag and removed a
WREATH and placed it on the tree. "The wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is
one continuous round of affection." He then pulled from his
bag an ORNAMENT of himself. "Santa Claus symbolizes
the generosity and good will we feel during the month of
December." He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. "The
holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown
of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent the blood shed by Him. Next he pulled from his bag a
GIFT and said, "God so loved the world that He gave His
begotten son." Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift.
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY
CANE and hung it on the tree. "The candy cane represents
the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring
back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper." He reached in again
and pulled out an ANGEL. "The Angels heralded the glorious news of the Savior's birth. The Angels sang Glory to
God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward
men."
Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at
me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said,
"Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble
servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him,
our LORD, our GOD."

Christmas Mass Schedule
Merry Christmas
to All!
2014 Christmas Schedule
Christmas Eve
On Thursday, December 25th, we BEGIN the
Christmas Season. It didn’t start on Black Friday
or Cyber Monday, but on
CHRISTMAS
DAY
with the birth of Our Lord
at Bethlehem. I invite you to celebrate the beautiful
Season with great delight and peace. Spend time with
family and friends; enjoy meals together as a family;
be joyful as the Season suggests.
Don’t forget to spend some time with Our Lord.
During the Christmas Season the Church has given us
beautiful Feasts to celebrate. On December 26th we
celebrate St. Stephen, Deacon and First Martyr; on December 27th we celebrate St. John, Apostle and Evangelist; on December 28th we celebrate the Holy Family
of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. All opportunities to thank
Almighty God for the great gift He has given us in Our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; and the gifts of Holy
Mother Church and the Sacraments. As the Christmas
Season continues we celebrate Our Blessed Mother
under the title of: “Mary, Mother of God” on January
1st. How appropriate to place our New Year in the loving hands of Our Blessed Mother so she can present all
our prayers and hopes to God most high. Also during
the first week of the New Year we celebrate the Most
Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd. The culmination of
the Christmas Season comes with the Feasts of the
Epiphany of the Lord on January 4th and the Baptism
of the Lord on January 11th. As you can see, the
Church has given us more than 2 weeks of wonderful
Feasts so as to celebrate the great Miracle of the Incarnation on December 25th. Don’t let these most eventful
weeks go by without taking notice of our Liturgical
Calendar.
I would also like to take this opportunity, on behalf
of Fr. Fisette and Deacon Bob, to wish all of you a
beautiful and holy Christmas Season and a peaceful
and prosperous New Year. Our prayer for our Parish in
the coming year is that we all experience the great
love, peace and joy Our Savior offers us every day in
the Mass, in the Sacraments and in the Church. May
we never fail to appreciate or take for granted these
great gifts that have been given to us.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 21, 2014
A Note from the Principal
The Month of December at Saint Rocco School brings much excitement with all of the
many scheduled events……….
The St. Rocco School’s Fantastic 50 Raffle, one of our first major fundraisers of the year, concluded
on Tuesday afternoon in Café Rocco. The entire school’s faculty, staff and students watched as the
raffle tickets were spun in the raffle drum. The students were so excited to watch and listen with anticipation as to who had won! In between raffling the prizes, our choir sang Christmas carols. The
generosity and hard work of our Parent Association, as always, was greatly appreciated. The funds
raised provide our school the opportunity to purchase educational equipment, supplies, and programs which directly
benefit our students! Many thanks to the area businesses for their generous donations! A heartfelt thank you to all of the
family and friends who supported this event. A special thank you to Mrs. Scotti who coordinated this event!
Our Christmas Shoppe was also held last week with the help of many Parent Association parent volunteers.
They worked extremely hard to offer the greatest gifts for all of the families on the students’ lists. A special
thank you to Mrs. Monello who headed up this event!
Last Friday evening the students in grades PK-5 enjoyed a special visit from Santa in Café Rocco! The
children were able to sit with Santa, have milk and cookies and watch the Polar express will their
classroom friends. A special thank you to Mrs. Carlucci & Mrs. Ritacco who coordinated this event!
Mr. Feinstein visited our school this week as well. An assembly was held and he was able to see the
students wearing their Feinstein Junior Scholar tee shirts and sweatshirts. He was impressed with our school’s generosity in making a difference in the lives of others through their good deeds, food drives and community service.
On Thursday evening, an amazing Christmas Pageant, under the direction of our music teacher Mrs.
Rodi, was held in St. Rocco Church. The choir and grade level performances were truly a tribute to
the Christmas season, as well as St. Rocco Church and School community! The students were treated to the School House Orchestra on Friday which concluded the last full week of school before the
Christmas holiday. Christmas songs being sung by our St. Rocco students could be heard through
the halls making for a most touching, festive and blessed time of the year!
The Annual Science Fair was held under the direction of our Science Teacher, Miss Audrey Armstrong.
Our seventh and eighth grader students did a superb job with their projects. The Bishop Hendricken
High School team made up of Advanced Placement Science instructor, Mr. Jeremy Graney and his AP
Science students helped to judge the students submissions. Congratulations to the following winners 1 st
place~ Nitsa Prasith; 2nd place~ Spencer Merlino; 3rdplace ~ Victoria Reilly; 4th place~ Lucas Marchetti;
th
5 place ~ Jenna Cassiere.
Adopt-a Priest Program ~ As stated in last’s week packet, each classroom has adopted a priest to pray for daily and
continuing through the end of the school year. This program is sponsored by the Cerra Club, an organization of the Diocese of Providence. Let us also, keep Fr. Carusi, Deacon Bob, and the Sisters in our prayers and give thanks for their
presence in our lives.
May you the gladness of
Christmas

The spirit of Christmas
