Board of Directors Meeting
Date:
Tuesday, DECEMBER 9
Time:
7:30 pm
From the Editor
Linda Solomon
We are coming up on those special holidays that make
everyone think of their families and the good (or bad)
times those holidays evoke. Those of us from the northeast or northwest think of spiced drinks and cakes that
would last lovingly on a tongue cold from the outside
frost, maybe even warming up our innards. Being welcomed into a friend’s or family member’s warm home
after a drive and then a short walk from the car to the
front door was always fraught with anticipation. If it was
Christmas or Chanukah and one was burdened with gifts,
thoughts would turn to what will this person have for me?
The holidays are happy memories for me and I have
shared some of them with you before. I would like to take
this time to mention just one more if I may.
It was Christmas Eve of 1988 and I was spending it
with my friend, John, at his sister’s house. Not being
Christian, but loving the holiday, I would always spend
Christmas Eve and Day with friends. John’s sister, Ann,
made a traditional 7 fishes meal and when everything
was cleaned up, Ann, John, their niece and my friend
Peggy, their father and I went to Christmas midnight
mass. As we were leaving the church, the snow was just
beginning to leave a light dusting on the ground. We
spontaneously decided to go to Manhattan to the skating
rink at Rockefeller Center and to see the window displays
along Fifth Avenue.
The night was quiet and we could hear the caroling
that was being piped into the air around the gigantic
Christmas tree. We watched skaters on the rink - a couple
who were dance skating to the music. There were very
few people around as the hour was so late and back then
that magical place was not so popular to visit as it became just a few years later.
So we felt like we had the whole space to ourselves on
that magical Christmas eve when the world was quiet and
we were filled with the wonder of our gorgeous New York
City and the snow and the decorations and the wonder of
it all. I will never forget that night and the dear friends
with whom I shared it all.

DECEMBER 2014
Annual Meeting and Elections
Date:
Tuesday, DECEMBER 23
Time:
7:30 pm
From the President
Sy Weiss
“WOW” Another year gone by. Before it’s gone
we will have our annual elections, which will be
held on the 4rd Tuesday of December which is the
23th.
Our community continues to look beautiful and
is still receiving compliments by visitors and homeowners alike. Welcome back to our snowbirds
which are slowly returning.
I know that I am repeating myself but I find it
necessary to do so. Garbage must be placed in a
covered can and put out the night before garbage
pick-up. We will move your unprotected garbage to
the side of your home if not probably protected
from the unwanted critters.
There is a new Mail Box in the Rec parking lot,
if you are having any issues or problems on your
property. Please do not call unless it is an emergency. Our board members are homeowners just
like you.
Once again, your dog poop is YOUR responsibility. Please pick up after them. Also, your dog
must be kept on a leash, not everyone is pet friendly
and some actually fear animals. If this becomes a
problem the board does have the right to request the
removal of the pet. It’s not the animal’s fault, so
let’s not take it out on him or her.
On a happier note, I would like to wish everyone
a Happy and Healthy Holiday season.

CRIME TRENDS - DO’S AND DON’TS
These actions are recommended by the Palm
Beach County Sheriff’s Office newsletter for public
dissemination. Read them carefully and act accordingly.
ALWAYS check your monthly statements and bills
as soon as you receive them. The sooner you catch
a discrepancy the quicker you can correct it or bring
in Law Enforcement to take appropriate action.
NEVER give out your personal information over
the phone. If you have caller ID or an answering
machine, screen your calls prior to responding
NEVER accept or hire anyone for any type of work
that is being solicited from someone going door to
door. Report this activity immediately to the authorities. Roofing scams are very popular right
now.
USE the buddy system when running your daily
errands; take a friend or two, have lunch and enjoy
the day out together, safely!
BE SURE to have an “Emergency Contact” person

Talk of the Town
by BOB TOWNSEND
B
TATOOS
ack when I was having a mid-life crisis and got
the first of my tattoos some people said I’d regret it one day. I didn’t. Until very recently.
Before I get into the reason why, though, let me tell
you about my tattoos.
I think I’ve mentioned to you previously about how
I hit the bottle pretty hard in my younger days. My first
tattoo found its way onto my right forearm when I was
35 years old. It was a cute little chick wearing a widebrimmed hat and a long strand of beads around her neck.
When I woke up - sober - the morning after, however, I
discovered it was actually a cowgirl that had been
branded onto my arm. She was wearing the traditional
ten-gallon hat and a rope around her neck. Hung over
and struggling to get out of bed that morning, I gazed
down at my arm, realized what I had done and grimaced,
“(Expletive deleted), I don’t believe I’m going to be going through life with Annie Oakley on my arm!”
The next tattoo I got just about two weeks later. This
was on my left forearm and pictured another woman.
She was wearing Roaring Twenties-type garment on her
head and was either a very attractive female from that
era or a hippie. Either way, I liked the tattoo.
I got my third tattoo in Hawaii. Part of the group I
was with went to Pearl Harbor for the afternoon and part
went to a beach. I went to a tattoo parlor. And I do mean
for the afternoon. Literally. It took five and a half hours
for the dude with the tattoo gun to complete the masterpiece on the side of my left leg. It’s a woman in a long,
black leather coat that’s open in the front and she has
nothing on under it. There’s a tattoo of a dragon on her
chest. So, you see, I was sporting “The Girl With the
Dragon Tatoo” long before Stieg Larsson’s popular
book or the movie. It became very handy at the After 6
Club’s luncheon to welcome back our community’s
“snowbirds” in October. The entertainment that afternoon was a scavenger hunt contest. We were divided
into six teams seated in a semi-circle around Diane
Weiss, who was standing in the middle of the floor.
Diane would call out persons or things she was seeking
(like a BB; if you don’t know what that is, don’t ask)
and contestants would race to her side, attempting to be
the first to comply. When she called for a girl with a
tattoo, I ran up to her and showed her my leg. There it
was: a girl pictured on my leg and she had a tattoo.
Diane and I had a lively debate as to whether my leg
qualified as a girl with a tattoo.
PAGE
7
Like I said, it wasn’t until very recently that I felt any
pangs of regret regarding my tattoos. Those feelings
came in connection with the After 6 Club’s Halloween
party. My wife, Ronnie, and I went in costumes. We
were Sonny and Cher. Obviously, I went as Cher. Why
is that so obvious, you ask? Silly question. Cher was
taller than Sonny.
I went to great lengths to look like Cher. (Although
my stepson saw pictures of the final product and said I
was the ugliest girl he had ever seen. I had to begrudgingly agree.) I even shaved my goatee and moustache.
But I was wearing a short-sleeved, Cher-like garment
and the tattoos of Annie Oakley on one arm and the
Roaring Twenties gal on the other was a dead giveaway
as to the true identity of the person in the jet-black wig
and the long, dangling earrings. So, for the first time, I
kind of regretted getting the tattoos. But, I’ve got to admit, I didn’t regret it all that much.

The Last Train to Paradise
By Les Standiford
For me what makes a nonfiction book memorable is
both a topic that interests me, gaining knowledge that is
not known to me and having it read like a novel with
memorable characters, a great plot and a pace that keeps
my interest.
All of this Les Standiford accomplishes in his nonfiction work about the building of the overseas railroad by
Henry Flagler and his Florida railroad company.
He sets the stage by having the first chapter deal with
characters like Ernest Hemingway and Bertrand Russell
and JJ Haycraft. It’s 1935, Labor Day weekend, and
there is a storm coming, a major hurricane, which will
be one of the deadliest on records, a category 5 hurricane. Hemingway is scrambling to get his boat moored
safely; Bertrand and his family are yearlong residents on
Matacombe Key at the town of Islamaroda. They are
trying to get to higher ground as the storm hits. JJ Haycraft is the engineer of old 447 and he is trying to get
down to the Keys to rescue people, particularly the men
in the tent camps who are working to build the new
The next chapters set the stage for the story of the
construction of what some called “Flagler’s folly” and
others called the 8th wonder of the world. Standiford
wisely does not do an in depth biography of Henry Flagler as that has already been done. He briefly describes
his early years, his successes at Standard Oil and his
three marriages. He views Flagler as a visionary and the

idea to turn a homeless shelter into a 5-star restaurant. The homeless at Ascencia Homeless Shelter in

decorated to become a beautiful space they called
Café Ascencia. Chef Jessie Brune prepared the
menu and the host was Benson and who acted as

(continued from page 7, Sharon’s Read)
man responsible for much of the development of the east
coast of Florida. His first visit to Florida happened when
he brought his first wife here on doctor’s orders. He then
proceeded to develop St. Augustine and Palm Beach. He
built fabulous hotels like the Breakers; and his mansion at
Whitehall was a wedding gift for his 3rd wife. At the end
of the Spanish American War and in learning about the
plans for the building of the Panama Canal, Flagler began
to envision a railroad that would bring goods from South
America up the coast of Florida, the Key West extension
of the Florida East Coast Railway, “Flagler’s Folly.” In
1898 he began talking about building a railroad over the
sea to his chief manager at the Florida East Coast Railway. He interviewed and hired a young engineer, Joseph
Meredith, to undertake the project. In 1905 Flagler said,
“Let’s go to Key West.”
The majority of the book is devoted to the various engineering difficulties that had to be addressed in building
the railroad, not the least of which was how to construct a
bridge over the 7 miles of open ocean between the Keys.
They were inventing new machinery and new technology
as they went along. There were many difficulties, including two destructive hurricanes, not the least of which was
recruiting men to work in the hot, muggy, mosquitoridden Florida summers. Many people wondered if Henry
Flagler would live to see the completion of the railroad.
Then in 1912 at the age of 82 Henry Flagler boarded his
private rail car in Palm Beach and made the inaugural trip
to nail the last spike in the railway and got off the train in
Key West. Henry Flagler died soon after this trip. Joseph
Meredith did not even live to see the completion of the
railway he devoted years of his life to.
The railroad continued after Flagler’s death but never
materialized into the transportation vehicle for goods
from South America that Flagler envisioned. It was not a
money making venture considering the cost of the construction. For awhile it did provide a way for people to
get down the coast of Florida and then by ferry to Cuba.
The last chapter details what happened in the 1935
hurricane that destroyed the railway and lost many lives.
Hemingway’s boat survived as Key West did not suffer a
direct hit. Bertrand Russell survived but many of his family members did not. JJ Haycraft did not rescue the people he hoped to rescue as the train was hit by a huge tidal
wave of water that pushed the train off the tracks. As you
drive to Key West there is a stone memorial at Islamaroda to those who died in that hurricane but there is only
a small sign pointing it out on the opposite side of the
road. Then as you travel over the various bridges, off to
the left you can see the remnants of the old train tracks

SAFETY TIPS
by Dennis & Carol Michalic
HAVE SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

In Memoriam
Plat 4/5 remembers
Jackie Milici
Wife of Richie, dear friend and neighbor
We offer condolences to
Morris and Doris Kushner on the loss of
Morris’ sister
Lydia Botfeld
She will be sadly missed.
FPL, PB Water Company and the Tax Department WILL
NOT make phone calls to you stating that they did not get
payments and request you give them your bank account
number, credit card number or any other information to
prevent their suspending your services, put a lien on your
taxes or arrest you.
 Scammers (usually in pairs to distract you) may appear at
your door unannounced to check electric outlets, test water.
The Water Department tests water and waste at their facility. They do not test the water in your house. Once the
water flows through the meter, their basic responsibility
stops. Verify FPL representatives at FPL.com or 697-8000.
 Tax scammers should be reported to Treasury Inspector for
Tax Administration 800-366-4484.
 The Water Department phone number is on your bill. Employees have ID cards.
 Phone calls not initiated by you are attempts to harvest your
personal information by identity thieves.
DO NOT BE A VICTIM. PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION!
FAMOUS QUOTES

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lange syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
