Red Carpet Roundup:

Swimsuit round

What factors make bridals interesting enough for a Karachiite to
travel to Lahore and watch an endless succession of bling-riddled joras for three consecutive days?
There is styling for one, closely
followed by creative presentation
and the beauty of our artisans’
craftsmanship that is a source of
constant pride of joy in our traditional heritage.
Telenor Bridal Couture Week held
at the landmark Faletti’s Hotel
checked all the boxes with its designer-wear bridal couture collections, making up for any loss with
the sheer volume of business it
generates with the bi-annual event.
Speaking to Images on Sunday,
Zahid Khan of Kuki Concepts, a
BCW regular who opened Day
One with a Banarsi fabric-inspired
collection titled Parisa, said, “There
is hardly any other fashion week
that generates the kind of business
for me like BCW. With each successive airing, I get a fresh wave of
orders, and it more than covers the
cost I pay for showing at the venue. As far as I am concerned, I really don’t need to look anywhere
else to attract business for my bridal-wear. The event is continuously evolving and some of the country’s leading couturiers are now on
board which adds value to the platform and makes me proud of being
a part of it.” Umar Sayeed was fitting finale to the three-day show

The Miss World contest, which has been an annual feature since 1951,
will no longer feature a swimsuit round in their competition, the organisation’s chairwoman Julia Morley has said, reported IANS. Morley
also revealed that she is hoping to set her competition apart from other
pageants by emphasising brains and personality over physical beauty,
reported dailymail.co.uk. “I really… don’t need to see women just
walking up and down in bikinis. It doesn’t do anything for the woman.
And it doesn’t do anything for any of us,” Morley said in an interview
with Elle magazine. “I don’t care if someone has a bottom two inches
bigger than someone else’s. We are really not looking at her bottom. We
are really listening to her speak,” she added. Miss World was founded in
1951 by Morley’s late husband Eric and from then on, there has been a
contest dedicated exclusively to swimwear. But recently, she has come
to feel that the swimsuit round is unnecessary. Earlier, the pageant
decided not to broadcast the bikini portion of the show in recent years,
thereby judging the girls privately in front of a small panel instead. Now
they have planned to do away with the swimsuit round altogether. “We
don’t want to just make them feel like they are walking bodies, you
know,” said Morley, adding that she is hoping to set her competition
apart from other pageants by emphasising brains and personality over
physical beauty. One step was the creation of Beauty with a Purpose
segment that started in 1974. In this round, the contestants are judged
on their most relevant and important charity project in their nations.
Rolene Strauss of South Africa was crowned the 64th Miss World winner in London on December 14 this year and it marked the final event
featuring contestants wearing bikinis. The competition was contested
by 121 women from around the world.
Kate Winslet to star
in Steve Jobs biopic
Of course there were the classic BCW moments too with Ali Xeeshan’s fantastical ode to K. Asif’s Mughali-Azam and the legend of Anarkali, the way over-the-top hair and make-up show by Depilex on Day Two
followed by a flawless Toni & Guy execution of the same on Day Three based on fairytale themes delivered
in impeccable Urdu, and of course the special lights show by Shahzad Disaster and his troupe. Among the
evening’s pleasant surprises was UK-based menswear brand Ziggi Menswear with its finely tuned design
aesthetics. Mini Bindra’s Rubaaiyat-i-Khayyam collection was about traditional silhouettes with fitted
bodices paired with gharara pants with Persian motifs & Fahad Hussayn’s Nautanki Rani, was a homage to
the performing arts with Mehreen Jillani, music by Hassan Mohiuddin & narrated by Naheed Siddiqui & The

Actress Kate Winslet is in negotiations to play the female lead in a
Danny Boyle-directed upcoming biopic on late Apple co-founder Steve
Jobs, reports variety.com. Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs, while
Seth Rogen is on board to play co-founder Steve Wozniak. The boipic
is based on the Walter Isaacson biography and was originally set up at
Sony Pictures before Universal picked up the project. For now, Winslet, who has already garnered six Oscar nominations and one win for
best actress for her performance in "The Reader", can be seen next
reprising her role as Jeanine in `Insurgent`.
It's not the present nip in the air
that is affecting Sonam Kapoor and
Sonakshi Sinha, but the cold vibes
between them. With the Khan-daan
(Salman, Arbaaz and company) all
going to town about their upcoming production Dolly Ki Doli starring Sonam, Sona is feeling the heat.
While most stars are welcoming the
Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma
who was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola in January last year has stayed
away from the limelight, till now.
From starring alongside Shah Rukh
Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,
Ranveer Singh in Ladies vs Ricky
Bahl and now with Aamir Khan,
Anushka
spoke
to
bollywoodlife.com about her ‘unusual’ role in PK. When asked
whether the actor was surprised
when filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani
offered her a role in PK, Sharma
said, “Not like I couldn’t believe it
but I was very happy. I felt the
kind of happiness that I did when
I had got Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. I
think Hirani raises that bar with
his films. He is not just making
films but is contributing to society with it. So that’s what I felt
about him and then when he called
me and narrated the script to me, I
heard the role and I agreed and I
was very thrilled.” She says that
it’s tougher to make unusual characters look effortless and easy. “If
you have a peculiar look or a
speech problem or if you’re speaking a different language that Aamir
is in the film then you have do
something else. A role like this or
Shruti Kakad from Band Baaja
Baaraat looks easy onscreen but is
difficult because you have get into
the thought process of that person. Personally, I might not react
in some way but the onscreen character will, so, you have to think a
lot. In this case, when I was promoting Matru, I used to observe
journalists, especially Hindi journalists. I use to see how they talk
and behave. So throughout the
promotions that was going on in
my head. You start to become
aware of your surroundings with
respect to what you might need
for your characterisation,” Sharma
explains. When asked about working experience with maverick
Aamir Khan the actor said, “As
actors your methods might be different but ultimately you’re getting to the same thing which is that
you become the person you’re
meant to play. I actually did not
give too many takes and it never
happened. If at all Aamir felt anything was wrong, he would feel
about his own take.” The 26-yearold actor has starred with Bollywood’s big guns such a Shah Rukh
Khan previously but found her
experience in PK with Aamir Khan
to be “slightly more intimidating”.
“I wasn’t scared but Aamir was
slightly more intimidating than
Shah Rukh. You know he is a very
sharp and intelligent in person. So
I automatically started observing
him. I used to find it very interesting as to how he would look at a
scene and how he would say certain things,” . Sharma co-stars with
Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani
in PK, which released in Pakistan
on Friday.
It was a star-studded sangeet ceremony for Manish Malhotra’s niece,
Riddhi Malhotra. Riddhi is all set to tie the knot with scion of Talwalkar
Gyms, Tejas Talwakar. The couple hosted an extravagant mehndi that
had a galaxy of stars from the film fraternity in attendance, including
actors Kareena Kapoor and Malaika Aurora Khan among others. Here’s
our pick of the divas that glittered the most.
Dolly on social media, Sona prefers to remain silent. Adding to it
is the buzz about Sonam and Salman in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
Sona is Khan's Dabangg girl and
now that everyone is showering
attention on Sonam, apparently
Sona is not liking it a wee bit. Tch,
tch.
Parineeti Chopra: The Kill Dil actor rocked a heavy navy-blue lehenga
that sat high on the waist and comprised of a thick gold and crimson
embossed hem line. The matching full sleeved top was entirely crafted
with velour and featured a demure high neck. Letting her velvety ensemble do all the talking, the star kept her accessories to a bare minimum by
going for a single statement piece chunky necklace. She added drama to
her look by rocking a slightly darker shade of cerise on her lip and
matching it with flushed cheeks.
