A Letter From Father John Blacker
The Seasons of Advent, Christastide and the New Year may seem like three different directions for our
thoughts, but the sig post that shows us the way points in the same direction (not three different ways)
the direction is Christ Jesus, the Son of God.
Advent is a time of a new beginning, a coming, a happening. It is the time of prayer and preparation
for the Coming of Christ at the end of time and the celebration of Christas, the Birhday of Our Lord
Jesus. It is a wonderfl time to discover the joy of Christ calling us to be ready to geet Him.
The Gospel is the Good News of Christ living at our side ever day to enlighten, stenghen and fee us,
not exactly the Christas presents we can buy at the shop or on-line!
Christastime is our ent into the more profound and deep tth of ' God with us'. The Incaration,
God bor for us and dwelling among us. Christas is a time of prayer for peace - but sadly conflicts
can be much closer than we think - they can be in our hears, our families and our day to day relations
with others. We need God's help to let go of anger and hur, and let te peace reig in our hears.
2015 is the New Year. A New Year to pray for ourselves, our needs and wants and a New Year to pray
for others, for the single parent, for prisoners, for those who are redundant or long ter unemployed,
for those suffering fom illness, physical and mental, for the bereaved and those who mour their loved
ones at this time.
Lord Jesus, we seek Your love for Advent, Christastide and the New Year - be the direction of our lives.
Father John Blacker

APOLOGIES
The Messenger last month (November) was subject
to printing difficulties.
The machine that does all of the printing has a busy
time printing over 90,000 sides per month and was
due a serious service it seems. (And has now had
one)
The team of Printers and Collators did a wonderful
job and caught as many blank pages as possible,
but some may have slipped through in the final
stages.
If you were one of a few recipients of an incomplete
Messenger we sincerely apologise.

with carols and reflection
Advent is a time when we can feel too busy to pray, but it
is a season that encourages prayer and reflection in the
midst of the busyness. Here are some suggestions that
might help you find time to pray this December.
Advent Word for the Day
As in previous years, a daily email will be circulated with a
seasonal reflection. This year we will be using the Jesse
Tree and the Advent antiphons to guide our prayers.
(Don’t worry if you don’t know what they are- we will
explore their significance together!)They will also be
posted on the website. To sign up or for more information
please email Jennifer on [email protected]
Advent Compline
On Monday evenings 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd December at
6.30pm in St John’s Pewsey (in the Lady Chapel by the
warm radiator!) there will be a short 30 minute service of
Night Prayer with poetry and silence.
Wednesday Prayer Group
A weekly intercessory prayer group meets at 5.00pm for
half an hour in St John’s Pewsey to pray for the Team and
any particular concerns people may bring. All are
welcome. For more information please contact Biz Keighley
(01672 563961 [email protected]).

SHOEBOXES THANK YOU.
So 15th November was our 13th Box Wrap Day
and as always it only happens with your kindness
and support. Again with your help we helped
Children in Need in Desperate situation
throughout the world. So my thanks to everyone
who gave time to help or donated gifts to help fill the boxes.
I would like to thank the Rev Jennifer Totney for her
encouraging email at the start of this year’s box event.
It has been about working in a quiet way and I so value
those who have helped me.
To sum up - Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did
not come to be served but to serve ….” (Mark 10:45).
Let us look for him to guide us - for when we follow
His call, we sow seeds of kindness which can result
in great blessings in the lives of people we meet.
Thank you all Stephen

SALISBURY PLAIN NEWS
There will be a reduction in military training over the
Christmas period together with a reduction in firing noise. It
was interesting to note the other day that the weather
conditions were such that I could hear mortars firing near
the Ridgeway while I was sitting in Waitrose car park in
Marlborough!
For those wishing to visit Imber village, the roads will be
open from 4pm on 18th December to 8.00am on 5th
January.
CONSERVATION NEWS
The recent unusually warm weather led to sightings
of Red Admiral and other butterflies in early
November, but regrettably they will not last long as
hard frosts were warned for a week later. But the
warm weather has also delayed the arrival of flocks
of our Scandinavian visitors such as the Redwing and
Fieldfare although small numbers of both have been
reported. A few Short eared Owls have been reported
as well as Hen Harriers.
At my recent Bulford Conservation Group meeting,
my ringing team listed ringing 229 birds in the year
up to September including: 5 Buzzard, 55 Kestrel, 37
Barn Owl, 36 Tawny Owl , 21 Great Tit and 2 Ravens
all in nests or boxes.
Garden birds are more active now that their food is
more scarce; my bird feeders are being "raided" by
Magpies and Jackdaws which keep the smaller birds
away as does the occasional and colourful Greatspotted Woodpecker.
Often developers object to NDP Plans as they are
being formed on the grounds that they do not allow
for enough development. This is your chance to
support the Pewsey NDP if you think it says the right
things.
Do you agree that development should happen only
within the line which shows the limit of development,
that there should be a balance between housing and
employment so there are enough jobs near to where
people live, there should be enough affordable houses
and green areas should be protected?

necessarily ones to wade through if you are short of

PREPARE for POTATO DAY!
Sunday 18th January 2015, Bouverie Hall - 10am until 2pm
Pewsey Potato Day has now become a popular annual event for local gardeners.
In conjunction with Pennard Plants, we shall again be offering at least 80 different varieties of seed potatoes for
sale by the individual tuber.
This means that if you want to experiment to see which variety you like and which grows best in your garden,
you can buy one or two of several types rather than a big bag of just one.
For expert growers, there will be several new blight-resistant types from the Sarpo range.
But it is not just potatoes. There will also be a selection of seeds, bulbs, plants and trees to tempt you, all at
very reasonable prices.
The event is open to all and admission is £1 per head, to include refreshments. DON'T MISS IT!

home of most of our Forces but many threats remain. Perhaps next year can be about diplomatic solutions rather
than war.
Here’s wishing everyone a very happy Christmas. Our celebrations start with a short Advent vigil at 6pm on
Friday 5th Dec. Other Services will be:
Sun 14th Dec – Morning Eucharist at 11am.
Sun 21st Dec – Christingle Service at 3.30pm.
Wed 24th Dec. – Midnight Mass at 11.30pm.
Sun. 11 Jan. – Morning Eucharist at 11am
Sunday 18th Jan – Evensong at 6pm.
Do please come along and those with children or young families will be particularly welcome at the Christingle
Service.
There will be no “Still Waters” in January or February 2015.
We are hoping to have a book sale early next year in aid of the Church and Village Hall. If you have any
unwanted books I, (Colin Bouch Yew Tree Cottage, 563077) would be glad to receive them or collect if preferred.
More details later.

St Mary Magdelene Woodborough
We have just held our planned "Team Vision" meeting with the Rector at which we discussed how we could
reach out to those parishioners who may come to Church for Festivals only and who we might encourage to
come to rearranged monthly services and times.
Also, in early November, we laid Peter Broxis' ashes to rest, beside those of his wife Anne, at a simple
service taken by the Rector and attended by relatives and friends from the village. Pictures will be sent to
his sons abroard - one in South Africa.
We are holding our next PCC Meeting on 18th November and the minutes will be displayed on the Church
notice board.
Our services for December are: Holy Communion BCP at 8.00am on 7th, our Carol Service at 6.00pm on
21st, and our two Christmas Eve services of the Crib Service at 4.00pm and Midnight Eucharist at 11.00pm.
January Services are in the diary on page 6
It is now time to thank all our helpers for their involvement both inside and outside the Church, and to wish
all parishioners a Very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.

ANGELS
· Draw a circle on the paper
and cut it out. Mark the
centre of the circle (lightly
fold it into quarters to find the
centre).
· Copy the face and features
on to the circle and colour
them in.
· Mark the dotted lines and cut
around them and around the
halo and hair as marked.
· Fold the angel into a cone by
putting one wing over the
other and slotting them
together. A little piece of
sellotape will hold it firmly.
We hear a lot about angels at
Christmas. A lot of the carols we
sing have angels in them – like
‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’
and ‘While Shepherds Watched
Their Flocks by Night’.
Angels are God’s messengers
and you can read about the
good news they brought to the
shepherds in Luke’s Gospel,
chapter 2, verses 8-20.
MAKE YOUR OWN
CHRISTMAS ANGEL
You can make a whole host of
angels, one for the top of the
tree and a row of them, all
different
sizes, to go on a
windowsill. To alter the size
simply draw a bigger or smaller
circle, you could use a dinner
plate or a small tin to draw
round. You could even make a
giant angel using a dustbin lid!
You will need:
Scissors, thick white paper or
thin white card, some felt tip
pens and something circular to
draw round (use a small plate or
saucer to start with).
How do angels greet each
other?
They say,
Halo.
How Many Angels
Do You Need This Year?
What do fish
sing at
Christmas?
Shark, the
herald angels
sing.
Merry Christmas
