RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Unger’s research interests focus on understanding the interactions between atmospheric
chemical composition and the climate system. Dr. Unger develops and applies numerical Earth
system models to quantify the impacts of emissions from human activities and the land biosphere
on climate change, and human and ecosystem health. A common theme of her research is the
coupled oxidant-aerosol-climate approach that examines multiple radiatively active short-lived
gases (ozone, methane) and aerosol particles (organics, soot, sulfate, nitrate). Current research
areas include air pollution effects on the carbon cycle, chemistry-climate feedbacks in past warm
climates, deforestation and human land use impacts on atmospheric chemistry, and effects of
aviation emissions on climate change and human health.
