Pier Paolo Pasolini Cover of French magazine Gay Pied, novembre 1982 Arbery Books catalogue December 2014 Pier Paolo Pasolini (born Bologna 5 March 1922, murdered Ostia 2 November 1975) was a film director, novelist, essayist and poet whose work, portraying the stark realities of impoverished and / or sexually active lives, often provoked controversy. Openly gay following a scandal in 1947 which led to his expulsion from the Communist Party and move to Rome, Pasolini’s treatment of homosexuality in his work is always sympathetic, although it is only in his poetry that it sometimes appears as a central theme. A long-term leftist, his views were not always orthodox and in later years he allied himself with the Radical Party. Pasolini’s empathy for and attraction to working-class youths lay at the heart of much of his work, as witnessed in his films and novels, and of his personal relationships, with several of his love affairs beginning with boys in their mid-teens. His death – run over by his own car near a gay cruising ground – has never been fully explained; the seventeen-year-old male prostitute who originally confessed to murder retracted his confession in 2005. Other suggested explanations include attempts at blackmail and right-wing activists. Arbery Books (established 2009) specialises in publications and ephemera of gay, lesbian and transgender interest.
