Dan Lipinski (D-3rd), joined by Sen. Mark Kirk and local manufacturing industry representatives, explained Monday that a bill requiring a national strategic plan for manufacturing he has been championing for years has become law. Lipinski and Kirk, a Republican, made the announcement at the fami- ly-owned Atlas Tool & Die Co., 4633 S. It requires that every four years the president work with public and private stakeholders to produce and publish a plan to promote manufacturing. At the same time, the president’s budget will have to contain an explanation of how the manufacturing strategy is being promoted. “From my days growing up in Clearing, near Midway Airport, I have understood how important manufacturing is to good middle-class jobs, strong communities and America’s defense,” Lipinski Cong. Let’s drift back to 1964 and try to envision what it might have been like then. Last week we looked at some of the presents kids might have hoped Santa would leave for them. This week let’s see what sort of gift Mom or Dad could possibly have received. Now, how do you think the wife would have reacted opening up this gift from the hubby? Untie the bright red bow, remove the pretty paper, and anxiously open the box to find a certificate for the Sears Charm School Self-Improvement Course. The six-week class covered make-up, hair styling, figure control, homemaking, and how to be a gracious hostess. The special Christmas price was $10. And the ad in the paper shortly before Christmas said, “Attention Husbands: A $10 gift coupon for our improvement course will make a wonderful Christmas gift for your wife.” Here’s another gift I’m sure the wife would have loved under the tree. Woolworth beckoned gentlemen to wrap up one of these for the little lady: “The party-spirited luxury apron, only $1 — So feminine but thoroughly washable.” Let us hope that if he took the advice of these two retailers, he also saw the ad from Hunt Jewelers and stopped in to pick up a little something, perhaps in a diamond. Now, what might she have bought for him? Any of these probably would have worked out nicely. Marquette Photo Supply advertised the Kodak Fun-Saver $20 movie camera kit. SOUTHWEST NEWS-HERALD Page 3 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2014 Ray Hanania Southwest News-Herald Columnist Battle to replace Topinka is all about politics You get a honeymoon when you win office, but there is no honeymoon in the political afterlife. Before Judy Baar Topinka was buried, a battle between the Democrats and Republicans already was erupting over who would take Topinka’s place as Illinois comptroller. It’s not like the office of comptroller is the most important state office. Sure, it isn’t. But the real issue is that Topinka was a Republican who held a statewide office, and that is not so common in Illinois, which is a deep Blue State held by Democrats. Although the new governor, Bruce Rauner, is a Republican, it’s more of a reflection on outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn’s failures as a state executive than any seismic shift in Illinois politics that gave Republicans an edge. Quinn blew this election with one of the worst election campaigns I have seen in 40 years, driven by his lack of loyalty to supporters and an enormous failure to reach out to mainstream suburban Cook County voters. It wasn’t a surprise at all. Quinn argues that for the sake of voters, the person appointed to replace Topinka should be forced to seek election in two years, in 2016, rather than in four years, in 2018, when the Topinka term actually would expire. Quinn is driven by bitterness — the kind he showed on election night when he refused to man up and concede defeat. But his colleagues are driven by spoils. The bottom line is the state Democrats want the comptroller’s office back that Topinka, a Republican, took. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued a ruling last week that basically said that outgoing Gov. Quinn has the power to appoint a person to take over Topinka’s remaining term, which ends in January, at the swearing in of a new comptroller. And, Madigan, a bright and brilliant state office-holder herself, said that incoming Gov. Rauner has the power to appoint the person to replace Topinka in the new four-year term that she won in the November election. Topinka died at a very politically inopportune moment, between winning the election and getting sworn in to a new term. Madigan’s ruling was based on existing state law, which does not require a special election to be held in two years, but instead should be held when the state elections are next scheduled in November 2018. She did say she believed that voters should be given the chance to elect a replacement in two years. Quinn has called the legislature back into special session Jan. 8, a week before Rauner is sworn in to succeed him, which is an unneeded added cost to taxpayers. The Republicans won the office fair and square. Voters, despite being heavily Democratic in Illinois, soundly backed not only Rauner to replace Quinn but also re-elected Topinka by a wide margin. Those calling for the costly special election argue it best reflects the interests of the voters. But I think the interests of the voters were clearly determined in November, when voters overwhelmingly endorsed Rauner and Topinka as the only two Republicans to hold statewide office in a field crowded with Democrats. Topinka’s successor should be a Republican chosen by the Republican Party. That should be respected. And I happen to be a Democrat. A “Reagan Democrat,” but a Democrat nonetheless. Kwame Raoul (D-13th) is pledging to bring back the idea of merging the offices of Illinois comptroller and treasurer. Raoul, whose district extends to the lake and goes as far west as Chicago Lawn, said on Dec. 17 that he would reintroduce a constitutional amendment that could give voters the opportunity to approve a merger of Illinois’ two top elected financial jobs. The move would save taxpayers an estimated $12 million per year, according to Raoul, who cited the late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka‘s support of the idea. “As we remember the extraordinary life of Judy Baar Topinka and mourn her passing, many of us are 9626 S. Pulaski • Oak Lawn Open Daily 10am to 8pm; Sunday 12pm to 7:00pm 708-636-2646 Holiday Party Platters reflecting on her passion for protecting taxpayers by exercising frugality in state government,” Raoul said. “Judy believed eliminating her own office was the right thing to do, and now is the time to honor her legacy while winning a victory for government efficiency.” Raoul has sponsored a constitutional amendment to merge the offices of comptroller and treasurer every year since 2010. In 2011, the Senate passed the resolution without opposition. The measure never received a vote in the House due to opposition by House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-22nd). If both chambers approve Raoul’s proposal in the upcoming legislative session, voters at the November 2016 general election will be asked whether or not they agree with changing the state constitution to eliminate the position of comptroller and assign its duties to the state treasurer. The constitution will be amended only if a majority of individuals casting ballots in that election (or three-fifths of voters who answer the ballot question) vote yes. “Great public servants like Judy Baar Topinka teach us never to rest in pursuit of better, more responsive government,” Raoul said. “So many core state services — from education to Medicaid to youth employment programs — are in dire need of funding. That $12 million will be put to good use each year.” The new legislative session begins Jan. 14 HEALTH INSURANCE? #1 Serves 5 to 8 People 30 Cocktail Shrimp with Cocktail Sauce $22.99 #2 Serves 10 to 15 People 48 Cocktail Shrimp with Cocktail Sauce $30.99 Avoid the Federal Penalty! Time goes by so quickly that it is hard to digest the past 12 months. I am more apt to recall stories from the past month than reaching back to last January. At the national level, North Korea has been accused by the United States of hacking into the database of Sony Pictures because Sony was going to release “The Interview” on Christmas Day. The satirical farce stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, who play characters recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong-un, the North Korean president. North Korea was not amused and threatened the U.S. dating back to April not to release the movie. Then Sony was hit by hackers on Nov. 24. The hackers — called the Guardians of Peace — posted messages threatening a 9-11 attack on theaters that showed the movie. Sony then pulled the plug on “The Interview.” Executives from Sony said movie chains were refusing to show the movie. Many movie chain executives said that was not true. But Sony Pictures had seen critical email conversastions about actors revealed to the public. Movies not yet released were able be viewed due to the hackers. The argument being debated is if studio executives back down for “The Interview,” what will happen if a foreign entity objects to a critical documentary? Even President Obama said he felt it was a mistake to pull the film. It appers the hackers won this cyberspace battle. Opening up trade to Cuba by the Obama administration this month has its detractors, who claim the Cuban people will still be living in a communist country. Well, they have been living that way over the past 50 years. Maybe it’s time to consider another strategy. Raoul Castro, 83, is the current Cuban president. His brother Fidel, 88, was the leading presence of the 1959 revolution. But that was a long time ago and this communist regime is suffering from hardening of the arteries. Perhaps the time will come when this regime will tumble as the nation slowly receives a taste of freedom. Other big stories this year focused on the death of two male blacks by white police officers. Protests surged with the assistance of social media. When a black male died in New York City, the protests escalated, relating a longtime fear in the African American community that black males are often subjected to brutality by some white police officers. This past week, two police officers were shot and killed in Brooklyn by a deranged man who then killed himself. He had revealed the reason for the killing was in retaliation of the deaths of the two black males. Some community organizers have called for an end to the protests until the two police officers were laid to rest. It is a reminder that while racial profiling and brutality exists, the job of police officers is difficult and dangerous. Locally, nine Chicago Archdiocese Catholic schools were set to close in June. The announcement came on Oct. 29. St. Rene, 6340 S. New England Ave., and St.Turibius, 4120 W.57th Place, were the two local Chicago grade schools scheduled to close. However, supporters of St. Rene are fighting to remain open, stating there has been no reason given why the school is closing. St. Rene had an enrollment of nearly 170 in October and has no debts, supporters state. These stories will continue to resonate in 2015. Cybersecurity will be mentioned often. Will the U.S. retaliate in a similar manner against the government of North Korea? Maybe that will be one of the big stories of 2015. Joe Boyle is the managing editor of the Southwest News-Herald. Raymond Ave. The snack shop has been open at various hours each day while the owner, Bani Issa, evaluated the needs and food interests of the library and local area patrons. Issa has decided on hours that will cover most of the library opening schedule. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The name of the cafe was chosen by Issa’s 12-yearold daughter, Mariam. According to Issa, he and his three children visit the library often. When Mariam saw that the previous snack shop owners had closed the Bookworm Cafe, she was insistent that her father look into opening the cafe again. Issa, a 23-year resident of Oak Lawn, feels the cafe is his chance to give back to the community where he lives and is raising his family. He had previously managed a bakery near the United Center in Chicago. He says he enjoys being involved with food service. The smell of homemade soup and fresh-brewed coffee greets visitors each day. The welcoming atmosphere extends to a comfortable leather sofa with soft pillows in one corner of the shop along with several new tables and chairs and a long table for groups of six. Issa plans to finalize menu selections within the coming weeks, but the menu may change seasonally as well. There is fresh fruit and breakfast cereal available each day, along with a variety of snacks, juice drinks, sandwich and dessert items. Postmaster: send address changes to: Southwest News-Herald, 7676 W. 63rd St., Summit, IL 60501 Russia’s Putin is in trouble; why that matters to us Russia is in the throes of a full-blown currency crisis, with profound implications for its economy, its political system and even for us. The ruble’s gyrations in recent weeks have been extreme, plunging to record lows that would have once seemed unthinkable. And that poses enormous geo-political opportunities for the United States, provided our leadership remains as disciplined as it has since the summer. The ruble’s rout is caused by the plunge in the price of oil, Russia’s major export, and exacerbated by sanctions imposed by President Barack Obama in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s military intervention in Ukraine this summer. Both abroad and at home, the Russian president overplayed his hand. So much so that the rouble’s slide reflects growing belief that Putin no longer runs Russia in its economic interests but is hell bent restoring the old Russian empire, which it cannot afford. The immediate options available to Putin to respond to the crisis of the rouble are unpleasant. Continue to jack up interest rates, now 17 percent in Russia; spend precious foreign reserves to prop up the rouble; or prevent Russians and others from taking money out of the country. The first two measures could end up in failure, while the third would be a retrograde and unpopular step for a government that has won accolades at home for restoring order and living standards on behalf of everyday people. Something else needs to change and that’s where our country comes in. Under Mr. Putin, the Russian economy has evolved into a corrupt, gangster crony capitalist society. Modernization that might have reduced the country’s reliance on oil has been squandered. And an expansionist foreign policy triggered sanctions from the United States and Europe due to the security threat Russia now imposes on free countries in Europe, a number of which are ancestral homes to many readers of this newspaper. The plunge in oil prices has intensified the pain caused by sanctions. Russia’s economy could shrink by as much as 5 percent this year, a figure architects of western sanctions thought would take years to achieve. Putin, therefore, is at a crossroads. He could reverse aggression in Ukraine and the rest of eastern Europe, and thus end sanctions. An easement of sanctions would not resolve the domestic economic damage from failing oil prices, but it would give Russia access again to western credit markets and more flexibility to ride out the economic storm. Based on past behavior, however, there is a good chance that Putin will behave irrationally. It is possible he will choose to double down on his vision of a Greater Russia, that he will further repress domestic opposition, and that he will set his sights on invading another neighboring country. It is, therefore, a good thing that President Obama offered up a new round of sanctions against Putin’s Russia last week. These past few weeks, it has become abundantly clear that our country has benefited from President Obama’s restraint of public rhetoric and his private resolve in building a team of rock-solid allies, especially Germany. The simple truth is the United States, since this summer, has been leading a coalition of free countries in an economic war against Russia. The good guys are winning. And there’s no reason to let up until Putin changes his ways or is vanquished by his own people. A free eastern Europe depends on it. Topinka would have continued to be herself under Gov.-elect Rauner By Rich Miller There’s little doubt that the late Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka would’ve continued her straight-talking ways during a Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner administration. Topinka was “good copy” for reporters. When she criticized a budget or a fiscal position, we listened. Other Statehouse denizens respected her fiscal smarts as well. If she attacked a proposal, legislators and everyone else under the dome took note. Rauner showed great deference to Topinka after the election, officing in her Statehouse suite and giving her chief of staff the authority to hire most of his new employees. I don’t think there’s any question that he grew to truly admire the quirky redhead. But Topinka had called for a far more gradual reduction to the state’s 2011 income tax hike than Gov.-elect Rauner has said he wants. A particularly brutal package of budget cuts or one-time gimmicks proposed by Rauner next year wouldn’t have gone down too well with her. Rauner would’ve had to take her opinion into account before unveiling his budget, or suffer the consequences afterward. She was also much more liberal than Rauner admits to. Topinka was expected to help build bridges between Rauner and organized labor, as well as to Democrats and left of center groups she worked with over the years and who have not yet become comfortable with the idea of a Republican governor. Yes, many of us lost a friend this month, but we also lost an experienced, respected politico who could counsel the new and inexperienced governor about how to be a more effective leader, and one who could help nudge him, publicly or privately, to stay on a more humane and fiscally responsible fiscal path. And with Topinka’s post-election passing, I don’t see any of Rauner’s fellow Republicans out there with the power or credibility who will also have the guts to stand up to the guy. Some holes can be patched here and there. Both Republican state legislative leaders have ties to unions, for example. Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno is a former social worker who has championed human services causes. But neither of those leaders have yet to show much independence from Rauner, whose money had a major impact on House races this year and could have an equally big impact on 2016 Senate races. For instance, Gov. Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton have all forcefully argued for a special election so that Rauner’s pick for Topinka’s replacement won’t serve beyond a 2016 special election. A four-year appointment by Rauner, they all argue, is just downright undemocratic. When the topic was first broached, Rauner claimed such an election would be unconstitutional, but the Illinois Constitution clearly says that the appointee serves until the successor is elected and qualified “as may be provided by law.” The next day, the two legislative leaders, Radogno and House GOP Leader Jim Durkin, released what higher-ups in the attorney general’s office derisively dismissed as a “half baked” legal opinion about why a special session would be unconstitutional. The opinion deliberately left out crucial words in important constitutional passages, defied logic by claiming “as may be provided by law” passage didn’t allow the Legislature to actually do anything, and ignored committee reports from and debate at the state’s Constitutional Convention which made it abundantly clear that the Legislature has the authority to act. Not only did that opinion bode ill for the incoming Rauner administration (with one person at the attorney general’s office saying it reminded her of Rod Blagojevich, whose lawyers would often pull legal arguments out of thin air to counter the attorney general), it also showed an astonishing servility by the two GOP legislative leaders. I don’t know whether Comptroller Topinka would’ve wanted a special election to replace her in 2016, rather than allow her successor to serve four years until after the regularly scheduled 2018 election. None of us do. She had her partisan leanings, so she might be wary of holding a special election in a presidential election year, when Democrats do much better than off years. But she was also a small “d” democrat and a four-year appointment sure doesn’t feel democratic to many folks. I do know, however, that Topinka never would’ve signed her name to an obviously bogus legal “argument” like the one released last week. “There’s a hole in the hearts of the people of this state,” Gov. Quinn said at Topinka’s memorial service last week. That’s true. But there’s also now a gaping hole in the government which assumes power next month. Moraine Valley is one of 15 community colleges selected nationally by AARP Foundation, in collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges, to administer Back to Work 50+. “In 2014, the BTW 50+ program taught participants the necessary skills to be successful and advance themselves in key industries, and program participants were very successful in landing employ- ment in our communities. We expect to build on the success of the program’s first year,” said Lisa Bly, assistant dean of Corporate, Community and Continuing Education at Moraine Valley and project director. “With our workforce development program, we provide real experience and focused training in fast growing industries. The cohort approach supports an open dialogue within the class, which allows for sharing of experiences and ideas throughout the learning process. Consider your attitude towards money. Each of us have different thoughts, feelings, emotions and approaches to money. Attitudes towards finances and money are formed from past experiences. How your parents handled money or dealt with financial issues when you were a child, or when you were growing up, helped shape your own attitude towards money. This attitude impacts many areas of your life including personal relationships, staying out of debt, saving for a home, planning for retirement and managing monthly bills. There are various forms of unhealthy attitudes toward money to look out for: 1) People who equate money and things with their self-worth. These individuals might do anything to get money or may overspend, finding themselves in serious debt. 2) Some excessive savers are vigilant about every dollar and every penny. Taken to the extreme, these are the people hoarding ketchup packets and napkins from restaurants or setting their heat so low in the winter their pipes burst. 3) There are those that obsess over their net worth and treat it as a measure of their status. They use their money as a source of power or as a method to control family members. 4) Finally, there are those who hide from money issues, feel stress with anything to do with money and avoid dealing with finances. If you find yourself having an unhealthy approach to money, the good news is that psychologists agree attitude is a learned behavior and what is learned, can also be unlearned. What can you do if you need to change your money attitude? Realize you need to make a change, reset your thinking and improve your approach to money. 1) Find a mentor or talk with people who have a healthy attitude towards money. 2) Read articles and books about managing personal finance. 3) Identify the behaviors you want to change and build positive financial habits to replace them. 4) Set time to review your spending and saving. They have extended the opportunity for kindergarten through eighth-grade students during the week of of Dec. 8. During this week, middle school students logged into code.org and began learning basic programming skills using the visual block interface. This platform also presents computer science in an incredibly engaging manner by introducing the concepts through the use of activities based on characters that are familiar to students. Many teachers at D123 saw this as an opportunity to engage and challenge students in a unique way. Teachers in subjects ranging from Science to 21st Century Literacy are excited about the opportunity for the students to participate in this event. Kudos to the teachers who are working with the students. Happy Birthday to Margie Garcia-Hernandez, Donna Ronshausen-Domanski and author Frank M. Victoria. The greens help you get a good start on vegetable servings for the day and make a delicious surprise. Strata with mixed greens and mushrooms is a delicious option for the New Year. It is similar to French toast. STRATA WITH MIXED GREENS AND MUSHROOMS sheet for 4 to 12 hours, turning them occasionally to help the bread dry out. In large saucepan, boil 2 inches water. Add greens and cook over medium-high heat for 3 minutes. Drain in colander, then run cold water over greens until they are cool enough to handle, 1 minute. Squeeze excess moisture from greens, then chop finely. Set greens aside. In medium skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add leek and onion and cook, stirring often, until onion is translucent, 4 minutes. Add mushrooms and thyme and cook, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are moist, 4 minutes. Mix in greens, and cook until mixture is dry and fluffy. Set pan aside. Coat 8-inch x 8-inch x 2-inch bak- • 6 slices multi-grain bread • 1 pkg. (5 oz.) fresh baby dark greens (mix of kale, chard, spinach) • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil • 3/4 cup chopped leek, white part and some pale green • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion • 8 oz. white mushrooms, stemmed and finely chopped • 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme leaves, or 2 tsp. dried thyme • Cooking spray • 1-1⁄2 cups (6 oz.) reduced-fat white cheddar cheese, shredded, divided • 4 large eggs • 2 cups 1 percent milk • 1 tsp. dry mustard powder • Generous pinch of cayenne pepper • Freshly ground black pepper Lay bread slices out on baking ing dish with cooking spray. Arrange 2 bread slices on bottom of pan. Cut two bread slices in half and fit 2 halves so bread covers bottom of pan completely. Spoon greens and mushroom mixture in even layer over bread. Sprinkle half the cheese over vegetables. Arrange remaining bread slices and halves to cover filling. In mixing bowl, whisk eggs until well blended. Add milk, mustard powder, cayenne and black peppers, and whisk to combine. Pour egg mixture into pan. Sprinkle remaining cheese over strata. Cover pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate 4 hours to overnight. To bake strata, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. While oven heats, set strata on counter to come toward room temperature. I’m hoping at the time I’m writing this it was a white Christmas. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year for 2015. I was very sorry to hear that Tarkington Seniors and Queen’s Seniors member Helen Suryn had fallen recently. She is recuperating at Rush Hospital and we hope she is doing well and we will soon again see her. She also recently celebrated her 102 birthday in October. Best wishes from all of us for happy holidays. I was shocked to hear that Judy Barr Topinka died. I remember her at so many functions as being so energetic and friendly. Our condolences to her son and family. May she rest in eternal peace. I was really thrilled to receive thoughts of happy holidays from my wonderful, efficient and caring nurses who worked hard to keep me alive and as well as could be during my stay at Rush. Thank you to Christie Schane, Caitlin Murphy. Katie Vanek, Sandra Obilade, Nance Dulaj West Lawn correspondent 7235 S. Avers Chicago, IL 60629 (773) 585-1627 and the wonderful staff, and happy holidays to you all. I wish to remind you to check on all your supplies, as after Dec. 27 they must be picked up. The new 20l5 deductible will take effect. Last Thanksgiving, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Frances Spencer. And this Christmas I received a beautiful bouquet from Elaine Beatovic. I am surrounded with various colors of mums. I really thank you for such caring at (773) 685-4090. I very much appreciate your Christmas cards as they have kept me cheered, but I will not be sending cards as my fingers tingle after the infusions I receive, which makes it difficult to write. And we have had our share of craziness, as our furnace went out without any warning. I was happy to see Tony Santucci bring heat back into our lives, and we are thankful for such wonderful people who are talented. I send condolences to the family of Thomas J. Durkin, 84, who died recently at Plymouth Place senior housing in LaGrange Park. I worked with Mr. Durkin at Thomas Havey Co., in Chicago a number of years ago as an assistant to the tax manager. His son and my son George received their C.P.A. certificates at the same time. He and his wife, Colette, who died in 2013, raised eight sons, five of whom are attorneys and three of whom are CPAs. I hope Santa Claus has brought you all you desired and that you all are healthy and happy in 2015. We whisper a special prayer for our military, their families, and our USA. The fans were hollering. The cameras were rolling. The coach of the top college basketball program in the nation was in the house. And people all over the world were watching. It was Show Time at Moraine Valley Community College. At least that’s what one St. Rita fan wrote on her poster and held it up throughout the game. But it lived up to the billing. The Palos Hills college hosted a battle of two of the best teams in the country last Friday night in the gym of its new Health, Recreation and Fitness building and St. Rita pulled off a 51-46 victory over Simeon on a game shown on ESPN2. Simeon fans were disappointed as their team, ranked 12th in the nation by USA Today, took the loss. St. Rita fans, however, were thrilled. Stoic-faced John Calipari, the coach of the top-ranked University of Kentucky, should have been happy as one of his prized recruits, St. Rita’s Charles Matthews, St. Rita senior Myles Carter throws down a dunkduring his team’s win over Simeon Friday night. – Photo for the News-Herald by Jeff Vorva had 17 points and 13 rebounds in the game. And Moraine Valley officials were ecstatic the game was a boon to the school and a chance time to show off its new and sleek athletic facility. But the game, which started at 5:30 p.m., not just appear overnight. There was a lot of work and thought put into mak- ing it happen. “It’s been a six-week process. We had to make sure we got the game, we had to prove to them that we can handle it with the staff,” said Bill Finn, the Moraine Valley Community College athletic director. “We got a crew of around 40 people set up the cameras, the microphones, cabling and other intricate stuff.” Long before the crowd was screaming for dunks and blocks, workers were in the quiet gym getting set up. Work on the gym began Thursday night and continued in earnest on Friday morning. “I’ve been working here since 10 a.m.,’’ Moraine Valley student worker Richard Gregg Jr. said Friday afternoon. “It’s going to be a big game so it’s gonna be exciting. I’m an athlete myself so it’s exciting that ESPN is here.” Finn was hoping more than 2,000 fans would show up. “Our (men’s basketball) games usually attract between 150 and 250 people, but this game should have at least 2,000 people watching, as well as a national audience,’’ he said hours before tipoff. The attendance was 2,600. “The main challenge for the school at this point is to make sure the facility is clean, staffed, and that there is enough change for those who are buying tickets.’’ Moraine Valley’s new athletic center officially opened in March, with the previous gymnasium being used occasionally for practice. Interment followed in Resurrection Cemetery. Christmas is over and New Year is on its way ‘No Excuses Journaling’ Christmas is over. It comes and goes so fast. I can’t figure out how, but it seems to sneak up on us even though it’s the same date every year. I think I should start my shopping for next year now, but I would forget where I put everything. That seems to happen more and more with me. Sometimes I buy birthday cards, can’t find them, buy them again and find the first ones. And I swear there is a gremlin in my house because I can see something everyday and when I need to use it, it’s gone. Sometimes I think I am losing my mind. Happy New Year! I can’t believe another year has flown by. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2015. Did you know that people in Mexico eat 12 grapes at the countdown to midnight? It represents 12 wishes. They also spread lentils around the doorway as a symbol of abundance, and sweep them out the door to drive everything bad from the previous year out the door! Wear red underwear to attract love, white for good health and green to attract money. Mexican pan dulce is served at midnight. The baker puts a lucky coin in the dough and the person who gets it when the sweet bread is being cut is considered the luckiest in the coming year. Mexican tables are set with the best linens; dinner is a variety of sweet, spicy, strong and sour with alcoholic beverages and some without alcohol. There are always floral arrangements and lots of candles, blue candles bring peace, yellow and abundance, red is passion, green is good health, orange brings intelligence and white isgood health. At midnight it’s customary to ring a bell for joy and happiness and kiss all the relatives! Throwing a glass of water at the street symbolizes washing away the Karen Sala Gage Park correspondent 5351 S. Rockwell St. Chicago, IL 60632 (773) 471-1429 tears. Put a coin in your shoe when you seek prosperity. Take your suitcases for a walk around the block if you want to go on a trip. If you want a promotion at work, get a ladder and stand higher than anyone else at your gathering. I received a very nice letter and Christmas card the other day from Jeana Wimunc. It was so nice to hear from you! Sometimes I wonder what happened to people I used to see all the time. Traffic in the neighborhood has really been unbearable. It seems like they are closing us in. Kedzie northbound, Kedzie southbound and 55th Street to the west. Why do they have to work on all the streets at the same time? It wouldn’t be as bad if everyone knew how to drive and leave intersections open, but they are in too much of a hurry to give up the extra inches, and really all it does is take longer. You can’t argue with stupid! All the construction at 55th and Kedzie seems to be coming along. St. Gall looks so pretty at night with all the lights around Our Lady of Guadalupe. I hope the new businesses will boost the economy in our neighborhood! It is so sad to see local businesses close, but it’s exciting to see new ones moving in. offered at The Center “No Excuses Journaling” begins today (Friday, Jan. 2) at The Center, 12700 Southwest Highway, Palos Park. Being that it is an election year, Martin Arteaga, one of the aldermanic candidates in the 23rd Ward, also dropped by. “We just had a very successful fundraising party. It was very well attended and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves,” said UBAM vice president Dr. Joe Loduca on Monday. He and UBAM president Anita Cummings, and board members Tom Boudos and Cindy Bieniek went over last-minute details about the program with Fair Play manager Sheri Fahy on Monday before driver Wally Czajowski headed off to deliver the boxes. The organization spends about $50 per box. Each box is filled with an assortment Crash Continued from Page 1 lanes of 95th Street, ran a red light and slammed into cars waiting for the light to change, police said. Alcohol intoxication is being ruled as a contributing factor to the crash, as well as excessive speed, police said. The third person in the car, Sister Sharon Ann Walsh, survived the crash. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2014 Continued from Page 1 of food and necessities such as toilet paper. Cummings said UBAM gets the addresses of financially struggling seniors from the senior services program run by the CAPS program. She noted that they also get names through programs such as the St. Vincent De Paul Society and other non-profit organizations that are in contact with seniors. “We could always use more names. A lot of people don’t want to admit that they could use a little extra food,” said Cummings. “We’re very appreciative of all the people and organizations who helped make the event such a success,” she added. She thanks all the local people and business owners who donated items for the silent auction, a popular feature at the holiday fundraiser. Popular items found on the raffle table included Blackhawks and White Sox items, and a football signed by Bears great Dan Hampton. Each year, Southwest Airlines also donates two round-trip tickets that are also raffled off. “This is our only charity fundraiser, so we really appreciate what everyone does,” Cummings said. UBAM board member Ken Pannaralla, executive director of the Southwest Home Equity Program, gave a short speech toward the end of the event, praising Cummings for all the work she has done with UBAM since its founding in the 1980s. She also was the former chair of the Home Equity Program. But Cummings gave credit to all the board members for their work in organizing the annual event. “People ask us why we do this (community) work, and the only answer is, because it needs to be done,” she said. Twenty-three people were treated at the scene and 11 were taken to an area hospital, officials said. This investigation is now closed, Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Randy Palmer said. Witnesses told police they initially saw Carthans slumped over the wheel of the pickup truck at 95th Street and Western Avenue and asked if he needed assistance. Carthans declined help and drove away, police said. Moments later, Carthans was involved in a four-car accident at 95th Street and Keeler Avenue near Target. None of the drivers in the crash were seriously injured or transported to the hospital, officials said. Carthans then drove at a high rate of speed toward 95th Street and Cicero Avenue. As he approached the intersection, he crossed into the eastbound lanes, ran the red light and struck cars stopped at a traffic light on eastbound 95th Street, officials said. Don Manzullo, who said there are dozens of federal agencies and departments with little or no coordination between them. Lipinski contended that this leads to duplication of services, as well as different areas of government working at cross purposes and against each other, creating rules and regulations that hinder job creation. “Failure to plan is a plan for failure,” Lipinski said. “We cannot allow our country to do this.” The congressman noted that he began the research and drafting of the bill in 2009. Several times over the years, a version of the bill passed in the House, but died when it was not brought up in the Senate. He credited Cong. Adam Kinzinger (R-16th), the chief Republican sponsor of the legislation in the House, and Kirk for his leadership in the Senate, for ensuring that it survived this time around. “This bipartisan bill shows that Washington is finally starting to get it, that manufacturing is good for America. Washington needs to promote policies that support manufacturing.” “Manufacturing is the beating heart of our economy,” said Kirk. “The people of Illinois reflect the highest work ethic of the Midwest. It is these men and women who keep me optimistic about the future of Illinois and the country. Kirk pointed out that components of military aircraft used in Afghanistan are manufactured at Atlas Tool & Die. “This is an essential national defense component, keeping our personnel safe in Afghanistan, produced right here,” the senator said. Lipinski explained that the first national strategic plan required by the new law will be done in 2018, in the second year of the new presidential term, and will follow the same schedule every four years. He said there is no point in doing it any earlier as the Obama administration is ending, and it will give each new administration a year to prepare. Zach Mottl, co-owner of Atlas and former chairman of the Technology & Machining Association of Illinois, noted that this legislation is the first of its kind since 1791, when Alexander Hamilton, as Treasury secretary, released his “Report on Manufactures.” He said TMA represents more than 1,000 companies and 30,000 employees in Illinois. “This act creates a system and framework to plan, execute and review (national manufacturing goals). “We (at Atlas and the TMA) are so grateful for this bipartisan view. Together we have to talk about a longterm strategy and the success for the U.S. economy,” Mottl said. Bill Hickey, president of Lapham-Hickey Steel in Bedford Park, also spoke during the news conference. Both he and Mottl testified in favor of the bill on Capitol Hill. “Manufacturing has been decreasing,” said Hickey. “There has been a 6 million loss (in jobs) over the past 15 years. We didn’t have a strategy for manufacturing. “What we’re going to do here is set an agenda and re-energize Main Street.” SOUTHWEST NEWS-HERALD Page 24 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2014 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year Take Advantage of Our Coupon Specials The Best Subs are made with...
