AP photographer
catches marriage
proposal at the
Eiffel Tower’s
Christmas ice-rink
PaRIs (aP) — It could have
been a scene from fairytale movie
“Frozen.”
and an aP photographer snapping tourists at the Eiffel Tower’s
Christmas ice-rink happened upon
the fairytale moment recently.
Real estate agent Jon Mcachran,
32, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, provoked instant applause when he got
down on one frosty knee (and iceskate) to pop the question on the
ice to his girlfriend ashley Marie
Kimberl, 30, presenting her with
a sparkling diamond engagement
ring.
Kimberl confirmed her answer
to the aP: “We’re getting married!”
she gushed that “it was a surprise, as our first date was on an
ice-rink in Virginia.”
This was not the first time that
the question has been popped at the
Eiffel Tower. Tom Cruise famously
asked Katie Holmes to marry him
there in 2005.

2014 Best-in-theater List
By MARK KENNEDY
AP DrAmA Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — The bestin-theater list for 2014 includes a
musical with multiple murders,
another w ith a cross - dressing
German, one that’s set in a decadent Berlin nightclub, the revival
of an America masterpiece and we
celebrate someone who broke an
important barrier.
Our Top 10 list of the best in
theater in 2014:
1. “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”:
The cult story about a transgender
East German rock star seemed
just to be waiting for it’s time to
shine on Broadway and Neil Patrick
Harris turned out to be a perfect fit
for her high heels.
2. “The Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night-Time”: Mark
Haddon’s best-selling novel about
a 15-year-old boy with Asperger’s
syndrome seemed an unlikely skeleton for a show, but director Marianne Elliott and choreographers
Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett
stage a swirling, beautifully kaleidoscopic, touching show.
3. “The Elephant Man”: One of
the world’s hunkiest men went to
Broadway and made himself hideous, using only his acting skills.

CELEBR ATIONS
For many young people in the audience, Bradley Cooper’s production
may be the first time they come to
Broadway. Now they’ll come back.
4. “A Gentleman’s Guide to
Love & Murder”: It was The Little
Engine That Could musical about
an impoverished man who discovers he’s ninth in line to inherit a
fortune. So he decides to eliminate
the eight heirs of the D’Ysquith
family standing in his way. Jefferson Mays plays all eight victims —
two women and six men — and is
the highlight of a clever, raucous
show.
5. “Aladdin”: It’s got James
Monroe Iglehart as a cartwheeling,
high kicking genie who performs
“Friend Like Me” with such skill
that he gets a standing ovation. It’s
also got a funny, self-mocking script
by Chad Beguelin. Both make it a
show everyone can enjoy.
6. “A Raisin in the Sun”: The
revival helmed by Kenny Leon and
starring Denzel Washington and
LaTanya Richardson Jackson was
a throbbing, vibrant production of
the American masterpiece. President Obama even made the trip
north to see it.
7. Norm Lewis becoming the
first black actor to take on the title
role in Broadway’s “The Phantom
of the Opera.” It was a long overdue step and Lewis was classy as
always: “I love the show but also
to have hopefully set a precedent
to see more diversity in casting,”
he said.
8. “On the Town”: The 1944
romance-chasing romp by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and
Adolph Green is filling Broadway’s
biggest theater with big, crowdpleasing dance numbers, lavish
and clever visuals and superb performances from a massive cast.
9. Bryan Cranston, starring in
“All the Way,” went from being
Walter White, the sinister meth lord
in the TV series “Breaking Bad,” to
playing President Lyndon B. Johnson, an irascible, foul-mouthed oldschool politician. Cranston took
home the Tony in his Broadway
debut.
10. “Cabaret”: It’s a glorious
revival of a show that is still glorious. Alan Cumming is debauchedly
brilliant, and Danny Burstein and
Linda Emond are perfect together.
But the musical is so well made that
Bryan Cranston could play Sally
Bowles and it would be fine.
Honorable Mention:
A wonderfully wacky and yet poignant “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” a
super cast of rising-star millennials
playing Gen-Xers in “This Is Our
Youth” and a searing and amazing
“Disgraced.”

Sheep wearing festive
sweater returned to
owner after escape
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A sheep
wearing a festive red-and-green
sweater who was found wandering
around Omaha has been reunited with
his owner.
Owner Margaret Vazquez tells
KMTV she initially panicked when
the sheep named Gage went missing. She says the sheep “follows me
everywhere.”
Nebraska Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese says the sheep was
reclaimed recently. The Humane Society was caring for Gage after he was
found in an Omaha neighborhood.
Gage shares a shed with two
chickens, when he isn’t in his owner’s
house. Gage is used to walking on a
leash and doesn’t seem to mind that
the holiday apparel he donned appears
to have been designed for a dog.
Vazquez says it was the first time
Gage has escaped and now will spend
more time indoors.

its inaugural class for the International Mustache Hall of Fame on Feb.
11, the birthday of Burt Reynolds.
The Mustache Hall of Fame will
be a virtual-only effort initially, but
AMI says it is searching for a physical
location.

I didn’t believe
I sneaked downstairs
That Christmas Eve
I don’t know why
‘Cause I didn’t believe
and there he stood
all covered with soot
In big black boots
and a funny red suit
all I could see
Was santa’s back
He was taking something
Out of his pack
and putting it under
The Christmas tree
It looked like a truck
Maybe it’s for me
a curly haired doll
I knew was for sis
‘Cause I saw it on
Her Christmas list
I didn’t have a list
at all because
I didn’t believe
In santa Claus
But now I know
That it’s not a lie
‘Cause I saw him with
my very own eyes

Beautiful “Christmas Sweaters”
To whom it concerns
I’m wanting to say,
“you can’t steal my joy
Or laugh it away.”
It’s now a new trend
To laugh and to jeer
at the beautiful sweaters
I cherish each year.
On december 1st
The tote comes out
The lid comes off
and I place them about.
I put them on hangers
and place them with care
Right in the closet
For my daily wear.
I have one for each day
The whole month long.
Now people’s response
Is totally wrong
so, when out in public
I’ll simply wear red
I like it a lot
I’ll wear it instead.
But here in my home
I want you to know,
you can’t laugh at me
and my sweaters, so...
Bah Hum Bug!
I won’t let you take my love for the
sweater
so make no mistake
I’m baking and singing
and you can’t steal my cheer
For my beautiful sweaters
Wedding proposal a smashing success
a M s T E R da M (a P) — a
dutchman’s attempt at a romantic wedding proposal was simply
smashing.
The unidentified lover in the
central town of Ijsselstein rented a
crane, planning to descend in front
of his girlfriend’s bedroom window
first thing in the morning, play her
a song and then pop the question.
Instead the crane toppled over,
smashing a large hole in the neigh-
I wear daily each year.
I think it is tragic
That you all must now miss
My beautiful sweaters
But, it’s come down to this
I boldly refuse
To embrace these new trends
and I’ll have one more sweater
When this season ends.
The now “Ugly sweater”
Is change of the time
Make fun of your own
But don’t laugh at mine!

The Christmas Gift
Thanksgiving day is over
Christmas is on the way.
Preparations need to be made
For a very special day
The day that Jesus was born
bors’ roof.
The man clambered to safety
and no one was injured.
according to the algemeen dagblad newspaper, the girlfriend said
“yes,” anyway.
after speaking with police, the
pair traveled to Paris to celebrate.
We celebrate each year,
Giving gifts to loved ones
The reason we’ve lost, I fear.
I pray that every human being
Could give the gift of love.
Expensive gifts cannot replace
The love from God above
Gift giving is out of hand
Prices are really high.
We need to give of ourselves,
Expensive things we need not buy.
Visit a shut-in every week
do a good deed for a friend,
This will be appreciated
Material gifts you need not send.
God’s gift to us was Jesus Christ
For our sins He lived and died.
and to all who ask forgiveness
Not one will be denied.
Sue Gratz,
Leipsic
Then the crane fell again during
attempts to right it with a larger
crane, bashing in the rest of the
neighbors’ roof. The town’s mayor
is on the spot after the building was
declared unsafe. six apartments
were evacuated.

Not so much
man’s best friend
PR aT TV ILLE, ala. (a P) —
Police in central alabama say a
man’s own dog helped officers bust
him on a drug charge.
Prattville Police spokeswoman
Paula Barlow says the pooch named
Bo followed his fleeing master, who
was being pursued by officers.
When the dog stopped and wagged
his tail in tall grass, she says, officers found and arrested Edwin Henderson.
Barlow says the chase began
when two drug officers arrived with
a search warrant and Henderson
took off running.
after an investigator pointed at
Henderson and told the dog “go get
him,” that’s what Bo did.
B a rlow s ay s Henders on is
cha rged w ith fa i lure to obey
police, manufacturing a controlled
substance and possession of drug
paraphernalia. It’s unclear if he has
an attorney, and there’s no word on
who’s taking care of Bo.
General Sherman
writes Lincoln about
a Christmas gift
EDITOR’S NOTE: This series
celebrating our heritage during the
150th anniversary of the Civil War
draws primarily from wartime dispatches credited to The Associated
Press or other accounts distributed
through the AP and other historical
sources.
Union forces led by Maj. Gen.
William sherman reached savannah
near the Georgia coast in december
1864, and the news spread quickly
throughout Northern newspapers
this week 150 years ago in the Civil
War.
“savannah Occupied by Gen.
sherman” read one headline on a
dispatch from The associated Press
dated dec. 25, 1864.
It said sherman had recently
taken 800 prisoners, guns and ammunition.
and in a famous line remembered
long after, sherman wrote President
abraham Lincoln: “I beg to present
to you as a Christmas gift the city
of savannah, with one hundred and
fifty guns and plenty of ammunition,
also about twenty-five thousands
bales of cotton.”
aP dispatches said Confederate
ironclad vessels were blown up and
the navy yard burned at savannah.
The dispatch said the city of some
20,000 was quiet, and one officer
called it an “almost bloodless victory.”
