DECEMBER 28,2014
Perspectives From Fr. Kurt: Our Parish Family
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Patrick:
This past week, I heard a wonderful story about Pope Francis. It seems after he finishes Sunday
Mass, the Holy Father likes to stroll the Piazza and visit with people. Apparently, this one
Sunday, he was with a group of priests and seemed quite in a hurry to get to a meeting.
Suddenly, he stopped the “traveling clerics” because he saw a young girl crying in the crowd. He
got the crowd to pass the young child to him. He held her in his arms and began drying her
tears, just like any “grandpa” would do. Then he asked her: “Why are you crying, my child?
Why so sad?” She responded: “Because my little doggie died yesterday!” Without a hesitation,
the Holy Father responded: “Don’t be sad. Your little doggie is with God now who is caring for
him.” This is why I am so excited by Pope Francis’ witness to the world and why some people
describe him as truly inspiring. Notice, what he did and didn’t do! He didn’t stop and begin
quoting a theological treatise on the “afterlife of animals.” He responded to the tears and hurt of
an innocent child. He shoes simple words and simple gestures to express extraordinary love. This is the
essence of true holiness – extraordinary love. And in some powerful way, that little girl in her heart feels like
this “kind man in white” is like another grandpa in her life – part of her family.
As you spend time with whomever you call part of your family this holiday season, my hope is that you will do the
simple and the ordinary with extraordinary love during your time together. This is what bonds us together
with one another as a parish family, the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and with our Creator God!
I also share with you the Prayer After Communion in this weekend’s liturgy to further inspire you to become a
“holy family” – not perfect, but deeply loving:
Bring those you refresh with this heavenly Sacrament,
most merciful Father,
to imitate constantly the example of the Holy Family,
so that, after the trials of this world,
we may share their company for ever.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen

CENTURY CLUB ORNAMENTS HAVE ARRIVED!
If you have “joined” the Century Club, you can pick up your ornament from
one of the church window sills this weekend. THANK YOU!
If you have not contributed, and would still like to do so, we do have extra
ornaments. Please place your $100 donation in the collection basket in an
envelope marked with your name and the notation “CENTURY CLUB” clearly written
on the envelope, and an ornament will be waiting for you next week. This
year’s design is of our north window depicting St. Patrick and includes our
logo for the 175th anniversary of the parish on a frost green background. If
you would like more than one ornament, a donation of $175 will reserve two
ornaments for your family. Thank you for the contributions you make today,
and all year round to help make St. Patrick’s a fiscally sound parish.
The Tri-Parish group RCIA celebrated their Nativity Story
Christmas Pageant on Dec. 16th. It is always a fun night when
the Birth Narrative is acted out along with appropriate music. It
helps everyone to better understand not only the story but the
significance of the Christmas gift of Jesus.

What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for
Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the
Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. RCIA is a
living experience of the Church, and not
just a series of classes that teach
knowledge about the Church. Although
there is instruction in the facts of the
faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of
knowing and sharing with other members of the Church.
We also have an RCIA process teens and a program for
children as well.
If you are interested in learning
more, please contact your pastor
or call Doreen at
630.257.2414.

CONGRATULATIONS
PATRIOT PEN ESSAY WINNERS!
St. Alphonsus-St.
Patrick School students
in Mrs. Bruno’s 6th, 7th
and 8th grade English
classes recently took
part in the Patriot’s
Pen essay writing
contest sponsored by
the VFW to honor our
veterans. This year’s
theme was, "Why I Appreciate America’s
Veterans.” There were 16 local winners out of
over 300 entries. Of those local winners, six were
our students! These talented writers were
honored at the Lemont VFW Honor 22 Post 5819
on Sunday December 7th. These students go on to
represent our area in the regional and possibly
state competitions. The essays were judged on
knowledge of the theme, theme development, and
the clarity of ideas in the essay.
Our award winning writers this year include 6th
graders Paige C. and Aidan C, 7th graders Holly
P. and Kyle K., and 8th graders Katie K. and
Natalia M. We are very proud of these students
and their ability to eloquently express their
admiration for America’s Veterans. We
congratulate them and wish them luck as their
entries progress in the competition.

RE Schedule
Sunday Religious Education classes will not be
in session until January 4th due to Christmas
Break. Wednesday classes resume on January
7th. We wish all our students, catechists, aides
and volunteers and their families a very happy
and blessed New Year.
Confirmation
Retreat
Eighth graders from RE
as well as our school
are reminded that the
Confirmation retreat will
take place on Sunday,
January 18th from 1:30 – 5:30 pm at St.
Alphonsus/St. Patrick School on Davey Road.
Please enter through the entrance at the back of
the building.
5TH GRADE MYSTERY SKYPE
What is a Mystery Skype? Mystery Skype is a critical
thinking challenge played between two classrooms.
The 5th graders recently completed their first mystery skype
experience in the computer lab with another 5th grade classroom
whose location was a mystery until they figured it out. The
students connected via a Skype call and took turns asking each
other questions that had a yes or no answer. During the question period, the students
took notes, studied wall maps and google maps, and adjusted their questions based upon the information that was
coming to them and based on suggestions developed by a group of students known as the “think tank”.
Finally, when the students thought they had enough information, they ventured a guess about the location of the
other classroom. Our 5th graders guessed correctly that the other school was in California and the other class
eventually guessed our location as well.
After the mystery was solved, the students took turns sharing some information about their respective schools
and states. After the skype experience was finished, the students took time to reflect on their Mystery Skype on
Edmodo, our computer classroom learning network. They agreed that it was an interesting and exciting learning
challenge that made them think about geography and be conscious of their speaking and listening skills as well.
