EMERALD COAST CLASSIC CHAMPS Junior G Stefan Moody scored a career-high 26 points, including 17 in the second half, as Ole Miss handed Cincinnati its first loss of the season with a 66-54 victory in the championship of the inaugural Emerald Coast Classic. The Rebels scored six straight points to break a 14-14 tie, retaining the lead the rest of the way. Ole Miss held Cincinnati in check offensively, as the Bearcats shot a seasonlow 30.4 percent from the floor and went almost 10 minutes without a field goal. It was the second-straight regular-season tournament title for Ole Miss. Moody was named the tournament MVP and senior G Jarvis Summers was named to the all-tournament team. OLEMISSSPORTS.COM POWER CONFERENCE WINS The Rebels’ win over Oregon gave Ole Miss another win over a power conference after the Rebels posted victories over the AAC (Cincinnati) and Big East (Creighton) at the Emerald Coast Classic earlier this year. It also gave the Rebels victories over teams from three different major conferences for the first time since 2011-12, when Ole Miss earned wins over the ACC (Miami), Big East (DePaul) and Big Ten (Penn State). The Rebels are now 13-6 against Power-5 conferences under head coach Andy Kennedy. SUMMERS NAMED TO COUSY AWARD WATCH LIST Senior G Jarvis Summers was one of 35 players recently named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List by Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men’s college basketball. SUMMERS EARNS PRESEASON HONORS Senior G Jarvis Summers was named to the All-SEC first team in a preseason poll of both the leagues’ coaches and media. He was also selected the preseason SEC Player of the Year and first team allconference by CBSSports.com. In addition, Summers was named the second-most undervalued player in the nation by Jay Bilas, who rated Summers the ninth-best point guard in the nation. OLE MISS KNOCKS OFF NAU Ole Miss finished the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 37-32 lead into halftime, and the Rebels carried that momentum to an 80-74 win over Northern Arizona. Senior G Jarvis Summers led the way with a season-high 22 points, his second 20-point game this season. He was joined in double figures by junior G Stefan Moody (13 points) and senior G LaDarius White (12 points), who each finished in double figures for the third straight game. The Rebels held a decisive rebounding advantage, 42-27, and took advantage at the free-throw line, where they went 30-of-35 for the game, which marked the most made free throws by Ole Miss since knocking down 30 vs. Mississippi Valley State last season. REBEL DEFENSE STYMIES SOUTHERN The Rebel defense limited the Jaguars to 28.1% shooting from the field and force 22 turnovers as Ole Miss knocked off Southern 69-38. It marked the fewest points allow by the Rebels since limiting Louisiana-Monroe to 38 points in the 2012 season opener. NEW ARENA ON THE HORIZON With $125 million in pledges and cash, the Forward Together Capital Campaign entered its building phase last year as Ole Miss works its way towards a new basketball arena. The building phase will focus on the Rebels’ new basketball arena and a five-story parking garage with 800 spaces serving the entire campus community. Construction on the new arena began in the spring of 2014 with the goal to open the arena no later than January 2016, which would be in time for conference action. The 6-foot-4 senior guard scored 16 points, including making three 3-pointers, and M.J. Rhett added 14 as Mississippi coasted to an 82-51 victory over Southeast Missouri at Landers Center. Smith had made just 1 of 14 attempts from 3-point range before Monday’s win. Smith and Rhett both had season-highs in points. Ole Miss (8-3) was in control from the beginning, jumping out to a 19-4 lead after making eight of its first 10 attempts from the field. It was Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy’s 200th career victory. He reached the mark in 10 seasons -- nine with the Rebels and one at Cincinnati. The Rebels’ final margin of 31 points was their largest of the game, but they led by double figures throughout the second half. They’ve won three of their past four games. Southeast Missouri (5-7) couldn’t dig out of the early hole and never led. Jarekious Bradley led the Redhawks with 10 points. Ole Miss continues to build chemistry after adding Smith and Rhett during the offseason. Rhett is also a graduate transfer from Tennessee State and both have slowly adapted to the Rebels’ offense. Rhett, a 6-foot-9 forward, made 6 of 7 shots from the field in 19 minutes on the floor. Smith was averaging just 2.1 points per game before Monday’s outburst. OXFORD, Miss. - Jarvis Summers scored a career-high 29 points, but Dayton banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to knock off Ole Miss 83-80 in overtime Saturday. Devin Oliver, 11 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 4 from three-point range, took the decisive shot at the top of the key, far behind the 3-point line. Oliver, who added seven rebounds and five assists, scored the final seven points of regulation play for the Flyers to force overtime at 73-73. Dayton (12-3) rallied from an 80-76 overtime deficit in the final minute of overtime to tie it at 80 on a jumper and layup from Dyshawn Pierre and Kyle Davis, respectively. Ole Miss (9-4) turned it over with five seconds remaining on an illegal screen from Sebastian Saiz. The Flyers turned to Oliver, who had misfired on a pair of early-season opportunities. Oliver managed to shake free for the straight-away shot that banked through cleanly. Ole Miss had an unsuccessful desperation heave at the buzzer. It was the second consecutive home defeat for the Rebels (9-4) in the final second within a week. Mercer’s Langston Hall hit a 3-point shot with 0.6 remaining to give the Bears a 79-76 win over Ole Miss on Sunday. Oliver’s decisive shot came from the same spot on the court. Soochie Smith and Pierre had 11 points each while Matt Kavanaugh and Vee Sanford added 10 points apiece for the Flyers. Dayton shot 31 of 65 (47.7 percent) from the field, including 11 of 28 (39.3 percent) from 3-point range. Ole Miss was led by Summers with 29 points, hitting 9 of 15 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Marshall Henderson had 15 points, all in the second half while Aaron Jones added 10 points. Ole Miss had the ball, up one with a six second difference in shot clock and game clock before turning the ball over out of bounds, giving the ball back to Charleston Southern with 8.2 seconds left. In a furious finish, Saah Nimley missed the initial layup, but Cedrick Bowen followed with a tip-dunk with 0.1 seconds to give Charleston Southern a 66-65 overtime win in the season opener for both teams Friday night. Ole Miss was not able to overcome an inefficient offensive performance, as they went 19-of-63 from the field and 6-of-30 from 3-point range with 17 turnovers. The Rebels were also outrebounded 54-50, including 19-16 on the offensive glass. Martavious Newby led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds, one point shy of his career high. He was also efficient, going 4-for-5 from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Newby was joined in double figures by senior M.J. Rhett, who scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in his Ole Miss debut. White and Jarvis Summers, who fouled out with 2:06 left in regulation, added eight points each for the Rebels. Down 29-17 at halftime, Ole Miss rallied in the second half behind some timely baskets by Newby and Rhett, tying the game at 54-54 with 3:24 left on a jumper from Rhett. Charleston Southern went back ahead 57-54 before Stefan Moody sent the game into overtime tied 57-57 on a runner in the lane with 16 seconds left, getting his ninth field goal attempt to go down after missing each of his first eight. Friday night’s loss to Charleston Southern snapped a 10-game winning streak for Ole Miss in season openers, including the first loss in a season opener under Kennedy. The Rebels return to action, going on the road to play at Troy on Monday night. TROY, Ala. - Senior guard Jarvis Summers scored 21 points, while junior Stefan Moody and senior LaDarius White added 14 points each, as Ole Miss defeated Troy 74-64 Monday. Moody, a junior college transfer, added all 14 points in the second half. The Kissimmee, Florida, native’s basket with two and half minutes remaining gave Ole Miss its biggest lead at 70-55. Troy never led. Wesley Person scored 25 points for the Trojans, the most by a Troy freshman in at least 14 years, to lead the Trojans (1-1). The Trojans, down 34-23 at halftime, pulled within four early in the second half, but Ole Miss scored on its next four possessions, capped by a basket by Summers and led 44-32. Martavious Newby and M.J. Rhett added nine points apiece for Ole Miss (4-1) which will take on 5-0 Cincinnati - a 69-51 winner over Middle Tennessee in the first semifinal - in Saturday night’s championship game. Summers was 9-of-10 at free-throw line and Newby was 4-of-4 - all in the final 20 seconds - as the Rebels finished 19-of-21 overall from the line. After trailing by six at halftime and 65-63 after Toby Hegner hit one of two free throws with 2:13 remaining, Ole Miss took the lead for good on Newby’s 3-pointer from the wing with just under 1:45 to play. Rhett followed Brooks’ missed 1-and-1 free throw with a baseline jumper, and Summers and Newby combined to sink 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to close out the comeback. Ole Miss got the early jump, scoring the game’s first four points and led 16-10 with just under 13 minutes to play in the half before Zierden caught fire and scored nine points in a 17-2 Creighton run over the ensuing 4:30. NICEVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Junior guard Stefan Moody scored a career-high 26 points, including 17 in the second half, as Ole Miss handed Cincinnati its first loss of the season with a 66-54 victory in the championship of the inaugural Emerald Coast Classic basketball tournament held at The Arena Saturday night. The Rebels scored six straight points to break a 14-14 tie, retaining the lead the rest of the way. Cincinnati struggled offensively, shooting a season-low 30.4 percent from the floor after hitting a season-high 56.8 percent in a 69-51 triumph past Middle Tennessee State Friday night. Clinging to a 30-25 halftime lead, the 5-foot 10-inch Moody ignited the Rebels in the second half with his penetration producing twisting layups in the paint through the Cincinnati offense. He also hit three three-point baskets. Moody was named the tournament’s most valuable performer and was joined by senior guard Jarvis Summers, the leading active score in the SEC, on the 10-man alltournament team. The Rebels shot a sizzling 62.5 percent in the second half, hitting 10 of 16 shots. That allowed Ole Miss to construct its biggest lead at 52-33 with 10:22 left following a free throw by Moody. OLEMISSSPORTS.COM GAME 12 | DAYTON | 17 GAME RECAPS Game 7 | Dec. 4, 2014 TCU 66, Ole Miss 54 Oxford, Miss. | Tad Smith Coliseum Game 8 | Dec. 7, 2014 Ole Miss 79, Oregon 73 Eugene, Ore. | Matthew Knight Arena OXFORD, Miss. - Junior guard Stefan Moody led Ole Miss with 12 points, as the Rebels fell to TCU 66-54 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Thursday. TCU (8-0) held Ole Miss (5-2) to a season-low 29.8 percent from the field, including a 7:11 scoring drought in the second half, during which the Horned Frogs turned a fivepoint lead into a decisive 18-point lead. Moody was the lone Rebel in double figures, his team-leading fifth game in double figures this season, scoring seven of his 12 points in the second half. Sophomore forward Sebastian Saiz was second on the team with nine points, followed by senior guard Jarvis Summers with eight. Senior forward M.J. Rhett led the Rebels with seven rebounds. In a back-and-forth first half that featured three ties and 10 lead changes, TCU took a 27-24 lead into the locker room. It was a defensive battle for much of the half, as the teams combined to go 16-of-53 from the field. TCU did its damage from 3-point range, where they went 4-of-8, while Ole Miss remained close by going 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, despite going 7-of-28 from the field and 0-of-6 from 3-point range. Ole Miss scored the first points of the second half, drawing to within one, before TCU answered with a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to seven. The Rebels battled back to within five, 42-37, with 13:06 left, before the Horned Frogs went on a 13-0 run and took their lead out to 55-37 with 5:55 left. EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The smallest player on the floor provided the perfect exclamation point for Ole Miss’ statement win on Sunday. Stefan Moody’s two-handed dunk with 36 seconds left punctuated his 22-point performance that helped lead the Rebels (6-2) to a 79-73 victory over Oregon and avenged an overtime loss at home to the Ducks (5-3) last season. The 5-foot-10 Moody was one of five Rebels to reach double figures, which didn’t include leading scorer Jarvis Summers, who finished with just one point. Sebastian Saiz added 17 points for Ole Miss, which also had three players off the bench in double figures. LaDarius White finished with 13 points, and Aaron Jones and Dwight Coleby had 10 each. Freshman Dillon Brooks led the Ducks with a season-high 21 points, and Pac-12 scoring leader Joseph Young added 17. It was Oregon’s first loss in six home games. Ole Miss outscored the Ducks 35-5 in points off the bench. M.J. Rhett and Martavious Newby led Ole Miss to a 46-39 rebounding edge with seven each. There were seven ties and 17 lead changes in the first half before the Rebels went on a 10-0 run to move ahead 33-24. Oregon missed eight consecutive shots during Ole Miss’ spurt, including a four on one possession. The Rebels closed out the half with a little luck when Rhett swatted home a rebound tip before Moody banked in a floater from the top of the key at the buzzer for his fourth 3 and a 47-33 advantage. The Hilltoppers (4-4) shot 51.9 percent from field in the second half, including 6-of12 from 3-point range, outscoring the Rebels 41-18 over the last 14:49 of the game. After shooting 52.9 percent in the first half, Ole Miss was held to just 24.2 percent shooting in the second half. For Moody, it was his second-straight 20-point game and his team-leading third 20-point game of the season. Joining him in double figures was senior LaDarius White with 15 points, who scored 13 of his 15 in the first half. It was a back and forth contest early, with three ties and four lead changes, before a 3-pointer from White gave Ole Miss the lead, 17-16, with 10:27 left in the first half, the start of a 9-1 run for the Rebels. Three-straight 3-pointers from Moody stretched the lead to 32-19 with 5:36 left. Moody finished with a game-high 14 points in the first half, going 4-of-7 from 3-point range and scoring 12 of his 14 points in a 3:44 stretch late in the half. Ole Miss led by as many as 17 on the way to a 45-32 halftime lead. The Rebels shot 53 percent from the field and held the Hilltoppers to just 33 percent shooting, including a 3:55 field-goal drought. OXFORD, Miss. - Behind a career-high 26 points from senior guard LaDarius White, Ole Miss overcame a 17-point deficit to knock off Coastal Carolina 71-68 on Thursday night at Tad Smith Coliseum. The Rebels shot 60.9 percent in the second half, as they overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to win for the first time this season. White was an efficient 7-of-13 from the field, 6-of-8 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, setting another career high with six made 3-pointers. He was joined in double figures by fellow senior guard Jarvis Summers (16 points) and junior guard Stefan Moody (11 points). Coastal Carolina made six of their first eight shots, including their first five from 3-point range, on the way to 66.7 percent shooting from the floor and 8-of-11 shooting from 3-point range in the first half. The Chanticleers led by as many as 17 and went into halftime leading 41-28. Sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from White, Ole Miss opened the second half on an 8-4 run, drawing to within single digits. The Chanticleers pushed the lead back to double digits, and then the Rebels answered with an 18-3 run, taking their first lead of the game, 54-53, with 8:21 left in the game. The Chanticleers rallied, taking advantage of two Ole Miss turnovers and going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, to tie the game at 66-66 with under a minute left. Moody then gave the Rebels a 68-66 lead with two free throws, and then an offensive foul for Coastal Carolina gave the ball back to Ole Miss, after which Summers made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 69-66.
