The Cranberry Scoop
DENNIS COUNCIL ON AGING
NOVEMBER & DECEMBER POETIC QUOTES:
“Dull November brings the blast, then the leaves are
whirling fast.” – Sara Coleridge
“I saw the lovely arch of rainbow span the sky, the
gold sun burning as the rain swept by.” – Elizabeth
Coatsworth
“So dull and dark are the November days. The lazy mist high up
the evening curled, and now the morn quite hides in smoke and
haze; the place we occupy seems all the world.” – John Clare
“How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon.
December is here before its June. My goodness how the time
has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” – Dr. Seuss
“God gave us memory so that we might have roses in
December.” – James Matthew Barrie
“How like a winter hath my absence been. From
thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year! What
freezings have I felt, what dark days seen, what
old December’s bareness everywhere!”
– Shakespeare

MOVIE MATINEES
FOR
NOVEMBER & DECEMBER
RESCHEDULED: Jersey Boys (2014), rated R ~
Wednesday, November 19th, 1:45 pm
Brand new to DVD! The story of the musical group the Four Seasons—the rise, the tough
times, personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became
symbolic of a generation. Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships within the group,
with a focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. An allegiance to a
code of honor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude
of challenges. Directed by Clint Eastwood.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1984) ~
Wednesday, December 17th, 1:45pm
Get into the holiday spirit with one of the best retellings of this Christmas classic!
Academy Award winner George C. Scott gives a powerful performance as Ebenezer
Scrooge in this truly heartwarming telling of Charles Dickens' beloved drama. At first,
miserable, greedy old Scrooge can't tolerate the revelry of Christmas, much less
comprehend its meaning. But visits from his former business partner's ghost and three
cautionary specters from the past, present and future force the man to soul-search.
A classic tale of redemption.

JUST
Did you know? Sarah Buell Hale (1788 –
1879) is most responsible for making
Thanksgiving a national holiday. She was a
writer, an influential editor, and the author of
the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb."
Thanksgiving had previously been celebrated
only in New England. Hale wrote letters to five
Presidents: Taylor, Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan,
& Lincoln. Her initial letters failed to persuade,
but the letter she wrote to Lincoln in 1863
convinced him. The holiday was considered a
unifying day after the Civil War. Before it's
addition, the only national holidays were
Washington's Birthday and Independence Day.

FROM THE

OUTREACH DEPARTMENT
Fuel Assistance Season Officially Begins November First
If you are renewing, and have received your renewal form, call for an appointment to have
us check your documentation and make copies. You want to be sure you have included
everything on the list. You must send documentation every year.
If you are applying for the first time, call now to schedule an appointment. The season runs from
November through April. The applications are here and must remain in the building. We cannot mail them.
We can come out for a home visit and do the application but only if you do not have transport or are unable
to take the DART bus (Dial-a-Ride transportation, formerly the B-bus).
We encourage folks to come here as we need to make copies of your documentation.
What you need for your appointment:
Proof of income for everyone living under your roof: If you are on Social Security, we need the
BENEFITS LETTER ( a bank statement is not acceptable if you are new applicant), also
documentation of pensions, interest, dividend statements, annuity income, wages, alimony, four
pay stubs, child support…any form of income.
If you own: mortgage documents, real estate bill and home owners’ insurance policy
If you rent: your lease, showing how much you pay, and with the landlord’s name, address and telephone number
Utility bills: your most recent electric and heat bill
Photo ID: Driver’s license or state ID
Social Security Numbers of everyone living under your roof.
TOWN OF DENNIS HELPS WITH FUEL ASSISTANCE
If you have been approved by South Shore Community Action for fuel assistance, you may qualify for help
from the Town of Dennis fuel assistance allotment. It comes into play if you use up all of your South Shore
funding. The money comes from South Shore, who bills the town at the end of the year. Qualifications:
Dennis Resident: live alone and have less than $3000 in checking/savings or two adults in the home and
have less than $4000 in checking and savings.
FILE OF LIFE: It is that little red plastic envelope on your fridge containing all your essential information. The
EMTs look for first thing when they come to your house. On it you have filled in information about meds and
Docs, emergency contacts, allergies, religion, etc. (I have added, “I have cold feet: need socks”). Also, I have
what Barbara-Anne Foley, the COA director in Harwich coined as a CAPE bag. Carry All Personal Essentials. Years ago she had yellow bags made up with that written on the front. I still have mine, but really any
bag will do. Indicate on your FILE OF LIFE where your bag is located. In mine I have a pad of paper, pen,
hair and tooth brush, slipper socks, underwear, a book, flashlight, a light bathrobe and a light lap blanket.
Some folks like to put in a house key and another File of Life. If you need to refresh and renew your FILE
OF LIFE with changes of meds, docs, or any other information, we have the blank sheets here. We
want the EMT’s to be able to read any corrections. If you do NOT have a FILE OF LIFE, come and get it
today, and pack your CAPE bag now!
Rest your eyes: If you spend a lot of time focusing on any one thing, you can forget to blink
your eyes and your eyes can get tired and dry. Try the 20-20-20-4 rule: Every 20 minutes,
look away 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds and blink four times.
Friendly Visitor Volunteer Program: This is a one-on-one, one hour a week commitment
to visit a senior in the community who is alone.
Handymen and Home Health/Cleaning Worker Lists are available at the Outreach Office.
Marion Prendergast and Kathy Pedini are Notaries (by appointment).

ELDER LAW NOTES
BY
ARTHUR B. CROOKS, JR., ESQ.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?? A recent article in the New York Times illustrated a problem which I am
noticing more and more in my practice. Mother had prepared a Durable Power of Attorney naming her
daughter as her power of attorney. Mother used the name her daughter had always used and thought
nothing more of it. There came a time when the daughter needed to use the power of attorney and took
it to the bank. Unbeknownst to Mother – her daughter had decided to “change” her name by slightly
modifying the spelling of her name and placing her “new” name on her driver’s license. The bank refused
to honor the power of attorney because they maintained she was not the “daughter’ named in the
document. YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT REGARDING YOUR “NAME” AND ITS EXACT SPELLING.
What name is on your birth certificate? What name is on your driver’s license? What name is on your
marriage certificate, military discharge papers etc.? Only the Probate Court can officially change your
name. Parting thoughts: if you are a “Jr.” you do not get “promoted” upon the death of your father; are
middle names spelled out or just an initial?; and only George Foreman can name all his sons George
Foreman.
Arthur B. Crooks, Jr., Esq., is Chairman of the Dennis Council on Aging.
If you have questions please call 508-398-3037 or visit www.crookslaw.com.
