CHRISTMAS EVE
DECEMBER 24, 2014
PROCESSIONAL HYMN:
Once in Royal David's City
Verse 2 = Choirs Only
“He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all,
and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall;
with the poor, and meek, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.”
Verse 3 = St. Peter's Community Junior & Senior Choir Trebles
“And through all his wondrous childhood he would honour and
obey, love, and watch the lowly maiden, in whose gentle arms he
lay; Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he.”
Congregation Please Stand and Join in on verses 4, 5 & 6:
Verse 4:
For he is our childhood's pattern,
Day by day like us he grew,
He was little, weak and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us he knew;
And he feeleth for our sadness,
And he shareth in our gladness.
Verse 5:
And our eyes at last shall see him,
Through his own redeeming love;
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone.
Verse 6:
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see him; but in heaven,
Set at God's right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around.

The congregation is requested to please observe silence

night, and the mountains in reply echoing their brave delight.
Refrain: Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo

What great brightness did you see?
What glad tidings did you hear?

come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord,

The Sermon
- The Rev. James H. Adams, Rector
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with
the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for
our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the
Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was
made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and
is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken
through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the
world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People:
(Sue Adams)
Praise be to God in his great love for us.
He has entered our darkness with his great light.
He comes as our God and yet as a child.
Lord, help us and your whole church to walk as children of the light.
Teach us to see your presence in each other:
to be aware that what we do to each other we do to you.
We give thanks for the word spoken by the prophets,
but above all for the Word made flesh dwelling among us.
May your whole church proclaim this Good News with joy.
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, be born in us today.
OFFERTORY HYMN:
#83 O Come, All ye Faithful
Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace.
We pray for peace for Bethlehem today.
Lord, give peace in the hearts of all, peace in our land,
peace among the nations: peace in our homes
and peace in all our dealings;
peace through him who is the Prince of Peace.
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, be born in us today.
1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come, and behold him, born the King of angels;
Lord Jesus, born of Mary, you are part of the human family:
you share our joys and our sorrows, our hopes and our fears.
Bless our homes with your loving presence,
be known to be with us, our families and our friends.
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, be born in us today.
Lord Jesus Christ, you came down to lift us up.
You descended that we might ascend.
You became human that we could share in the divine.
We pray for all who are down at this time:
we remember the outcast and the refugee; the homeless.
We pray for the lonely and those who are unloved,
for all who will find this a sad day or a hard day.
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, be born in us today.
We give thanks that you have opened the kingdom of heaven
to all believers.
We pray for loved ones departed from us,
that they maybe one with you in your kingdom.
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, be born in us today.
~ Adeste fideles
Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.
2. God from God, Light from Light eternal,
lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
only begotten Son of the Father; (refrain)
3. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
glory to God, glory in the highest; (refrain)
4. See, how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle,
leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; (refrain)
5. Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
we would embrace thee, with love and awe;
who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? (refrain)
6. Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father,
now in flesh appearing. (refrain)

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Peace:
Celebrant: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People:
And also with you.
(Greet one another in the name of the Lord.)
Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who,
by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the
flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered
from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this
hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name;

THE SANCTUS:
~ Schubert
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love
which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel
to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and
above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your son. For in these last
days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the
Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us
from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have
brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out
of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;
and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my
Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me."
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ,
and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Peter and all your
saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and
daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation,
the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all
honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power,
and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
(Wendra Trowbridge and Jeremy Trowbridge, sopranos

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord
of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
115
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts
that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood
of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we
may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
1. (Ted Townson and Sadie Kenyon-Dean, duet)
What Child is This
~ Greensleeves
(Kathryn Lawson, clarinet)
What child is this, who, laid to rest,
on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
while shepherds watch are keeping?
Refrain: This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard
and angels sing; hast, haste to bring him laud,
the babe, the son of Mary.
2. Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here
the silent Word is pleading.
3. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, come, peasant, king,
to own him; the king of kings salvation brings,
let loving hearts enthrone him.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
~ Mendelssohn
1. Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies;
with the-angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem!
2. Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord;
late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the God-head see; hail the-incarnate Deity.
Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel!
3. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.
Risen with healing in his wings, light and life to all he brings,
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
1. Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright
round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.
2. Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight,
glories stream from heaven afar,
heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born!
3. Silent night, holy night, Son of God,
love's pure light radiant beams from thy holy face,
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Joy to the World!
~ Antioch
(omit verse 3)
1. Joy to the world! The Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King.
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and heaven and nature sing.
2. Joy to the world! The Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
4. He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love, and wonders of his love,
