DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF A
UW CERTIFICATE OR DEGREE
GAIN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE THAT OPENS POSSIBILITIES AND HELPS YOU
REACH YOUR GOALS.
In addition to giving you the reward of learning something new, UW certificates and degrees
can help you sharpen your skills, get a promotion, change careers, step into an emerging
field or prepare to branch out on your own — as demonstrated by thousands of graduates
each year.
KEEP YOUR DAY JOB, HAVE A LIFE AND STILL KEEP LEARNING.
Certificates typically consist of one or two courses each quarter for three quarters, which
means you can complete a program in just nine months. Some take even less time. Degree
programs generally take two or more years to complete. To maximize flexibility around busy
work and family lives, we offer programs during the evening, on weekends, online and in a
variety of locations, including the UW Seattle campus, downtown Seattle, Bellevue and Bothell.
BROADEN YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK.
Most students find their lives are enriched by the connections they make. Throughout the
duration of a program, you attend classes with like-minded individuals, which can be a great
bonding experience. Learn from UW faculty, instructors and guest speakers who are top
industry professionals in touch with the latest developments in their fields. Often these
contacts lead to unexpected career developments.
COMPLETE RELEVANT PROJECTS AND EARN A RESPECTED UW CREDENTIAL.
In addition to our highly ranked degree programs, we offer a range of well-regarded certificate
programs. Certificates are developed under the guidance of an advisory board made up of
individuals who understand the evolving needs of employers. As a result, you gain practical,
real-world knowledge that is immediately applicable in the workplace. Programs culminate
with a capstone project or portfolio piece that you can use to demonstrate your learning to
employers and others interested in your work.
EXPERIENCE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE UW AND LEARN FROM INDUSTRY LEADERS.
By tapping into the tremendous resources of UW faculty, our advisory boards and our
instructors, we’re able to offer programs that address the demands of rapidly changing work
environments and emerging technologies. Many of our programs are not offered anywhere
else in the region.

ARTS, WRITING & COMMUNICATION
Dare to Create
You’ve got something to say. A sentiment or story you want to share.
Maybe you capture it in a photo or drawing. Maybe you write about it.
Whatever medium you choose, the satisfaction of giving life to your
idea is hard to match.
Jess Grant knows the feeling. Throughout his career in administration, he found a way to
create, spending years writing songs on the side. Then, when he retired, he decided to try
his hand at screenwriting. “I love movies and I love writing and character development,”
Grant said. “But it was a little intimidating. I'd never written a screenplay.”
So Grant signed up for the Certificate in Screenwriting. He appreciated the hands-on,
craft-oriented format of the program. “Just because you can write narrative and a piece
of dialogue doesn't mean you can structure a story,” he noted. During the program,
Grant completed his first screenplay.
Learning the craft of screenwriting was crucial. What really set the program apart for
Grant, however, was the emphasis on marketing. “Putting together a good script isn't
enough,” he said. “You want to see it up on the big screen.”
Encouraged by his instructor and a guest speaker from the local film industry, Grant
pitched his screenplay to a producer, who asked to see a copy. While there’s no film deal
yet, just having his play read was an accomplishment. “In my world, that was big,” he said.
Grant is now working on a second screenplay.

CAREER INSIGHTS
ASSESSING FRINGE BENEFITS
Many companies go above and beyond the standard fare of medical coverage
and life insurance, using fringe benefits not just to attract candidates, but also to
brand their corporate culture. The perks are as varied as the companies that offer
them and range from providing free gourmet food to offering free beer or allowing
employees to bring their dogs to work.
While these and other unique benefits impress some, others aren’t so easily
swayed. When it comes to figuring out the value of fringe benefits, Stacey Carroll,
principal consultant with PayScale, notes that the true worth is in the eye of the
beholder.

BUSINESS
Passion Never Rests
A little know-how can go a long way toward big success in business.
Sometimes mastering just a few new tools can unlock opportunities
that were unimaginable before.
That’s what happened for Daniel Will George when he took the Certificate in Business
Administration. “I see my career as having manifold possibilities, really, and I have no
reservations,” he said. “Before I enrolled in the program, I had a much narrower view of
my path.”
A fine arts major with programming skills, George wanted to get an overview of the
business world and learn how he could be successful in it. He found the course sections
on negotiation, marketing, and strategy for financial and critical thinking about business
especially helpful.
George used his newfound skills to evaluate a startup before accepting a job there — and
to negotiate a higher salary and other benefits. “Thank goodness I took the business
administration program, because I now know the basics of what stock options are,” he said.
In addition, George feels confident that with the skills he gained in the program, he can
pursue his own business dreams. “I wouldn’t have been able to think, ‘Maybe I’ll meet
an engineer, and I’ll put a team together and we’ll develop an app. Maybe we’ll start a
business and find a niche market,’ he explained. “Now I’m thinking that way. I’m definitely
excited and optimistic about my future.”

CONSTRUCTION, REAL ESTATE
& SUSTAINABILITY
Build the Solution
Building and maintaining the structures and infrastructures that make up
where a community lives, works and plays is no small feat. Success
depends on the talents and energies of countless people, often working
behind the scenes. Planners, engineers, construction managers, facility
managers. And that’s just a start.
The interdependence of these systems is never more evident than when something goes
wrong. Being an executive officer in the Washington Army National Guard, Michael J.
Monaghan knows too well how disaster elevates the importance of our systems.
Monaghan chose the online Master of Infrastructure Management & Planning program
because “it’s closely related to one of the things the National Guard does, and that's help
out in the community in cases of natural disaster or emergency.” He found the emergency
management, strategic planning, policy analysis and infrastructure finance classes particularly
relevant to his work.
Monaghan also believes this degree will be valuable when he retires from the military. “I'm
planning on taking this education and combining it with my military experience and finding
a good job in the civilian sector,” he said. “There are tons of opportunities based on what
we did in this program. Combine it with my work experience, and I really think the sky's the
limit in a few years when I start job hunting.”

EDUCATION
Learn to Lead
Educators inspire, teach, nudge and point the way for learners of all ages
to fulfill their potential — and their dreams. They’re also among the first to
value the opportunity to grow through education themselves.
Traci Carvalho-Mattos had been working as an assistant teacher for decades when the
timing became right for her to achieve her lifelong goal of finishing her bachelor’s degree.
While living and working in Oahu, Hawaii, Carvalho-Mattos enrolled in the online Bachelor
of Arts in Early Childhood & Family Studies degree completion program.
“When you’ve been in the field for 20 years, you might think you already know all of this,”
Carvalho-Mattos said. “I’ve learned to identify and deepen my practices and challenge myself.”
Although Carvalho-Mattos was initially hesitant about the program’s online format, she
has found the experience positive. She cites flexibility, becoming more tech savvy and the
relationships she’s formed as bonuses to the online format.
The degree program will also help Carvalho-Mattos advance in her career. “A bachelor’s
degree will open up my employment opportunities,” she said. “I will be able to run my own
classroom instead of being an assistant teacher. It will also give me a pay increase in my
position that I hold right now. It’s a win all the way around.”

RETURNING TO WORK AFTER A
PARENTING BREAK
Six years ago, Natalie Singer-Velush was working as a newspaper reporter covering
some of the city's biggest crimes and juggling care of her infant and toddler
daughters. She loved her job but missed her kids. When chaos began to eclipse the
satisfaction she had once felt from her career — and despite real fear about mommy
tracking herself — she decided to step away for a while to raise her children.
As a stay-at-home mother, she reconnected with her daughters and regained
some sanity. Yet even as she sang through story times, toured kindergartens and
communed with other mothers and fathers on work hiatus, she had already begun
to obsess over two little words: What’s next?

yourself after taking time off to raise your kids in the Career

HEALTH, BIOTECHNOLOGY
& SOCIAL WORK
Change the Course
Molecular biology, nutrition, social work, public health administration.
These are just a few of the puzzle pieces that create the full picture
of health care today. And just as numerous and varied as these
components are the career opportunities in this arena.
Sudipta Chakrabarti, a graduate of the Master of Science in Biomedical Regulatory
Affairs program, began her health care career in India as a pharmacist. “When I moved
here, I wanted to build a new career that is related to my health care background,
something that would be challenging and interesting,” she said.
Although Chakrabarti had a background in pharmaceuticals, she discovered a new
interest during the program — medical devices. “I found I enjoyed the engineering part
of devices,” she explained. “I also love testing devices, the labs and the regulations for
devices. It’s really fun for me.”
Chakrabarti also enjoyed the cohort-based system of the program. “Since we all took
classes together, we were able to make friends and network,” she said. And, she noted,
the inclusion of industry guest speakers provided further opportunities for students to
build professional connections.
The hands-on experience during her practicum at Philips Healthcare, a medical device
company, solidified Chakrabarti’s decision that this career change was right for her.
“After the program, I got a job at a device company,” said Chakrabarti, now a regulatory
affairs specialist at FUJIFILM Sonosite. “The program exposed me to the device world
and changed my thinking about my career.”

GREAT RESUME BUT NO INTERVIEWS?
If you’ve crafted a resume that’s visually appealing, easy to read and succinctly
conveys why you’re the best person for the job, congratulations. Creating a solid
resume is no easy feat. Now, with that task checked off, it might seem like the logical
next step is to get your resume in front of as many eyes as possible. But that might
not be the best way to land an interview.
Staying on top of who sees your resume — and who doesn’t — is what executive
career coach and job search coach Rita Ashley calls resume hygiene. Ashley, author
of Job Search Debugged and Networking Debugged, believes how you share your
resume is almost as important as its content.

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION,
NONPROFIT, SOCIAL SCIENCES & LAW
We > Me
Studies are backing up what common sense tells us: Doing meaningful
work is key to job satisfaction. For some that might mean contributing
to a bigger cause, developing individual talents or finding work they love.
For Jessica Frederick, it’s a combination of all three.
Drawn to the nonprofit field, Frederick enrolled in the Certificate in Nonprofit Management.
“It gave me that umbrella look at how nonprofits are run,” she explained. “A kind of taste test
of lots of different areas — HR, marketing, fundraising, volunteer management.”
Frederick also decided to take the Certificate in Fundraising Management, as a way to dive
into one area of nonprofit work. The program gave her hard skills, she said, and an opportunity
to practice them during grant writing and fundraising planning projects for local nonprofits.
And, she discovered, with fundraising she can draw on her strengths in communicating and
relationship building. She had found her niche.
The relationships she developed with her cohort, guest speakers and professors were a
highlight for Frederick. “The teachers are not just professionals in the field, they’re household
names when it comes to fundraising,” she noted. “To be able to have them as your advocates
and learn directly from them is a priceless experience.”
Today, Frederick is the development and communications manager at a nonprofit, and she
couldn’t be more excited about it. “Now I know that this is what I was meant to do,” she said.

TECHNOLOGY, SCIENCE,
ENGINEERING & MATH
Question the Answer
Before you can innovate, you need to understand how things work.
The mechanics, the numbers, the chemistry, the code. Often, a
glimpse into those workings stirs up a curiosity that sets you off on
a path of lifelong learning.
Nell Shamrell, a senior software developer, started down this path by taking the Certificate
in Ruby Programming. She already had some programming experience. The certificate,
however, gave her a broader understanding of the world of Ruby and Ruby on Rails —
as well as the community surrounding both.
The advanced Ruby on Rails class, one of Shamrell’s favorite courses, covered a wide variety
of subjects, like deploying in multiple environments and optimizing Web applications.
“It was an introduction to lots of topics that empowered you to seek out deeper knowledge.”
As Shamrell noted, learning programming is an ongoing process. “Being introduced to new
Ruby tools and learning how to seek out knowledge was immensely helpful.”
Through the certificate program, Shamrell began working collaboratively on code with
people around the world, using tools such as Git and GitHub. As for the introduction
to and experience with open source software she had in the program, Shamrell said,
“That’s worth major points at companies.”
“I moved into a higher position as a result of the technical expertise I received from the
certificate,” Shamrell said. “I’ve also been speaking at conferences on technical topics,
on Ruby and on Rails, which has done wonders for my career.”

HOT JOBS: CYBERSECURITY
ANALYSTS
Cyberattacks are one of the hazards of the digital age. Every week, there seems to
be another news story about passwords stolen, customer data hacked or celebrity
photos leaked.
Cybersecurity professionals are on the front lines of defense against threats like
these. They’re in charge of keeping an organization’s networks and information safe.
In the broadest sense, they plan and implement security measures and monitor for
security breaches. Once a threat is detected, they work quickly to neutralize it and
repair any damage. They’re even starting to implement more proactive rather than
reactive security measures.
And, as the number and sophistication of cyberattacks increase, government and
private industry organizations are clamoring to hire well-trained cybersecurity
professionals.
