Conference Goal The goal is to enhance the skills and performance of those providers who treat alcohol and other drug problems. New scientific, best-practices, treatment, tools and modalities in all areas of addiction medicine will be presented. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees will be able to: • discuss how the State of Washington is involved in Chemical Dependency Treatment. • describe how the START study helps clarify differences in agonist replacement therapy. • engage patients who are not ready to change in discussions of their alcohol use and how to offer patients shared decision-making regarding alcohol use disorders. • discuss the current state of substance use and addiction in adolescents. • list what impacts initiation of use and the evidence for treatment interventions. • present addictions, their treatment, and recovery as depicted in popular media. • consider audience perspectives on how these public media presentations might augment or decrease addictions treatment engagement and effectiveness. • analyze the potential benefits and negative consequences of medical marijuana. • estimate the capabilities and goals of a computer-based intervention for addiction. • extrapolate the study results of a computer-based intervention in addiction patients. • identify pharmacodynamics and kinetics of common hallucinogens. • examine recent research utilizing hallucinogens for treatment of addictive disorders. • realize DSM-5 definition of Mood Disorder, NOS. • identify treatment strategies to treat Mood Disorder, NOS. • review the brief screening instruments to assess for gambling problems. • evaluate the evidence-based treatments for gambling disorder and potential treatment referral. • review the current state of major global infectious diseases including emerging diseases. • name and differentiate the strengths and weaknesses of available alcohol biomarkers. • translate how alcohol biomarkers can be used in the assessment and treatment of alcohol use disorders.
