Intended Audience
This activity is targeted toward health-care professionals who treat patients with
alcohol and other drug problems. It is particularly relevant for the following
specialties: addiction medicine providers, chemical dependency counselors, family
medicine providers (including physicians, nurses, ARNPs and PAs), psychiatrists who
treat patients with alcohol and drug problems.
Conference Goal
The goal is to enhance the skills and performance of those providers who treat
alcohol and other drug problems. New scientific, best-practices, treatment, tools
and modalities in all areas of addiction medicine will be presented. The latest
developments in treatment and translating that into clinical useful knowledge
will also be presented in didactic lectures.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:
• discuss how the State of Washington is involved in Chemical Dependency
Treatment.
• describe how the START study helps clarify differences in agonist replacement
therapy.
• engage patients who are not ready to change in discussions of their alcohol
use and how to offer patients shared decision-making regarding alcohol use
disorders.
• discuss the current state of substance use and addiction in adolescents.
• list what impacts initiation of use and the evidence for treatment
interventions.
• present addictions, their treatment, and recovery as depicted in popular
media.
• consider audience perspectives on how these public media presentations might
augment or decrease addictions treatment engagement and effectiveness.
• analyze the potential benefits and negative consequences of medical
marijuana.
• estimate the capabilities and goals of a computer-based intervention for
addiction.
• extrapolate the study results of a computer-based intervention in addiction
patients.
• identify pharmacodynamics and kinetics of common hallucinogens.
• examine recent research utilizing hallucinogens for treatment of addictive
disorders.
• realize DSM-5 definition of Mood Disorder, NOS.
• identify treatment strategies to treat Mood Disorder, NOS.
• review the brief screening instruments to assess for gambling problems.
• evaluate the evidence-based treatments for gambling disorder and potential
treatment referral.
• review the current state of major global infectious diseases including emerging
diseases.
• name and differentiate the strengths and weaknesses of available alcohol
biomarkers.
• translate how alcohol biomarkers can be used in the assessment and treatment
of alcohol use disorders.
