Monofilament fishing line is made out of
polyamide (nylon)-pellets, which are liquefied in an extruder and subsequently
pressed through extremely fine holes in a
spinning nozzle under high pressure.
After cooling in a water bath, these

threads are expanded by a multiple of
their length. This is done until it is stretched to its final diameter. Depending upon
line quality, the threads receive special
coatings for surface hardness, UV-resistance etc. in different immersion baths.
Lines can be manufactured with different
colors and attributes thanks to the possibility of adding basic element additives
like color granules and flexibilizers.
Besides fishing line made of nylon, there is
also line made of fluorocarbon. Originally,
it was used as a leader in fly fishing, but
today it is also being used more often as
fishing line. Being that this material
refracts light in a similar way as water,
such fishing line is ideal to use for fishing
for shy fish. Additional attributes: it sinks 3
times faster than nylon line; it is close to
100% UV-resistant, cold resistant and
does not absorb water, so the original
breaking strain remains even after fishing
for hours.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to unite all
the good attributes of nylon into one single line. Thus a “hard” line has a higher
linear breaking strain, but lower knot
strength and elasticity. A “soft” line, on
the other hand, offers lower breaking
strain, but higher knot strength and more
elasticity. Therefore, it is very important to
know the specific uses of a product in
order to compose its individual elements
perfectly during manufacturing.

THE BIGGEST DECEPTION
FACTOR: DIAMETER AND
BREAKING STRAIN
The angler is often lied to
about these two topics. TÜV has determined by random sampling in France that
90% of the fishing line wrongly declared
to have a diameter or breaking strain
well over the manufacturing tolerance.
This is not much better in Germany or
most other countries.Thus, monofilament

much more than 4 kg, but it is still touted with the specifications over the 8
kg mark.

In order to stop this deception to anglers, the European Fishing Tackle and Trade
Association (EFTTA) has
authorized an independent testing laboratory in England to check line diameter
and breaking strain and to award certification to manufacturers that work correctly. This EFTTA Certificate only permits
a diameter and breaking strain deviation
of ±10% in production.

Look for this EFTTA certificate the next
time you buy fishing line or ask about
manufacturers who fulfill these quality
requirements. Otherwise, simply check
the given diameter with a micrometer
before your purchase or let your dealer
do it for you. This small effort will pay off
in that you will be rewarded with more
safety and better fishing. In order to simplify choosing the right fishing line, you
will subsequently find some explanations
about the meaning and definitions of the
most important line criteria.
Breaking strain:
This is the measure of all things for most anglers. Actually, it only plays a role during loosening a hanger. The power, which is developed
while playing a heavy fish, is much lower than
one would think.
Knot strength:
Since the knot represents the weakest link in
the line assembly, it
has an especially
important meaning.
Correct knots like the
improved and the
double looped
‘Clinch Knot’ yield up
to 100% linear breaking strain. You’ll achieve
the best result by using CLIMAX KNOT + as
well. When it is applied to the line before the
knot is tied, it will prevent heat development
when tightening. At the same time, CLIMAX
KNOT + prevents the nylon from being pinched
during strong tension. It serves as a kind of
buffer.
Abrasion resistance:
If one considers the stress a line takes through
friction in the rod rings, rubbing on obstacles
like branches, rocks, mussels in water and contact to fish teeth, then the importance of this
line attribute is understandable. Only line made
of a good material and with an additional
coating will make the grade for long durability.
Suppleness:
Especially with spinning,
one has to find a healthy
compromise between
breaking strain and line
hardness. What use is a
line that has the highest
breaking strain, but is so
stiff it comes off the reel
curly and cannot be casted out far?
Elasticity:
One of the main advantages of a good monofilament is its elasticity, which is at between
20 and 30%. Not too much and not too little
elasticity in a line is the “insurance” against
fish loss. This buffer compensates for heavy
strokes of a fighting fish or setting the hook
too strongly as well as the potential harm of a
brake adjusted too high or insufficient rod
action.
Line color:
A distinctive feature of monofilament line is
that it can be manufactured in every color.
Line color plays a very important roll in successful fishing. Transparent or light line is a
definite advantage for predator fishing. Its silhouette under the water surface is much less
suspicious for fish than a hefty colored line.
For bottom anglers, muted colors that vanish
in the mud of unclear waters are ideal.
A bright colored, highly visible line such as
yellow or orange is perfect when using pilkers
or twisters, spinning or trolling, this line indicates the exact position of the bait and helps
the angler catch fish.
Memory effect:
Particularly hard monofilament line with low
elasticity tends to “remember” a specific original form and take on this shape. Such line,
which has been on a reel for a long time,
tends to pop off the reel like a corkscrew
when casted and often hangs in the rings.
Later, the line will lay in spirals on the water
surface and this prevents setting the hook
quickly. In most cases it helps to stretch the
line before use.
LINE CARE:
The life-time of a monofilament is largely
dependant upon the right care. Floating line
should be treated with our CLIMAX line care
agents after long exposure to straining waters.
These agents free the line of dirt and return
the line to its original floating properties and
suppleness. Check the first 20 meters of line
for damage after longer use. If strong bends or
roughness are found on the line, cut these
abrasions off and renew line assembly.
Important: Do not leave the line in the sun
unless necessary and protect it from drying
out. Store your line in a dark, humid area, e.g.
in the cellar or basement.
WHAT TO DO, WHEN...
After you have spooled a new line directly
from the packaging onto your reel it is wise to
let it rest for a few hours before fishing, so
that it conforms to the reel diameter better.
Thus, you will prevent line twisting and
memory. Every line twists after spinning or
trolling a long time using heavy spoons or
plugs. Let the line pull from the reel, without
bait, in flowing water or behind the boat and
clean it. It will lie on the reel smoothly and
without any twists.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS ABOUT BRAIDED LINE
Braided fishing line has been used by professional anglers and deep sea anglers and is
manufactured from polyester fiber (Dacron).
Dacron line absorbs water and can be dyed in
any color shade. The specific weight of this
fiber is higher than that of water, so this line
can simply break through the water surface
and sink. In the middle of the 90s, an alternative came on the market. It was a new kind of
fiber with the name DYNEEMA® or Spectra.
The success of this polyethylene gel spun synthetic fiber was resounding. Touted as a miracle line with gigantic breaking strain, it amazed
anglers all over the world. Since then, many
anglers had to collect their own experiences
with fish sliding on the hook and broken rods
due to low line elasticity and the extremely
high breaking strain of these braided lines.

BRAIDED DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN
BRAIDED PROPERLY
In comparison to monofilament fishing line,
braided fishing line is made of many strands,
which are in turn spun from razor-thin synthetic fibers. A flexible, extremely durable fishing
line with 2 to 3% elongation is formed
through tight braiding.
CLIMAX-lines are pre-stretched and sealed
against abrasion and dirt infiltration in the line
shaft via a special thermo-treatment after the
braiding process. The quality of a braid is
dependant upon high-quality basic material,
the number of strands,
which would be braided
together, braiding precision as well as the subsequent finishing.
OVAL OR ROUND
The profile of the line, i.e.
oval or round is dependant upon the number of
strands, with which the
line is braided.
A braid with 3 strands
(the minimum amount)
will always remain relatively flat, even when
they are braided very
tightly. The line becomes
compacter and “rounder” with an increase in the number of
strands. The complex production, in comparison to that of monofilament, takes a multitude
of time and the quality difference of basic
materials result in a price difference between
monofilament fishing line and braided fishing
line. Economical braided line is normally made
with fewer strands and looser braiding. Thus,
they are not as round. That is not necessarily a
disadvantage, since they are more flexible and
have a higher breaking strain than the extremely tight braided lines.
THE MATERIAL
DYNEEMA®*-FIBRES
High-strength polyethylene-fiber from the
Dutch chemical company DSM is 15 times
more guaranteeing tensile strength than the
same weight of steel. Having a density of
0.95 to 0.97 g/cm3, it is lighter than water
and floats fantastically even after being used
for longer fishing periods. The fibers are very
durable, last a long time and are highly
resistant to abrasion. It does not absorb
moisture and is resistant to UV rays as well
as chemicals – the ideal material for a professional fishing line.
FLOATING, INTERMEDIATE, FAST
SINKING, SUPER FAST SINKING
Thanks to the combination
of different types of fiber
in a braid, it is possible to
create line with individual
attributes and abilities. The
incorporation of lighter or
heavier fibers to the
DYNEEMA®-Fibres braid or even the insertion of

and match fishing, sinking
lines used for bottom fishing or extremely heavy

DIAMETER –
A SUBJECTIVE SPECIFICATION
Many anglers are insecure when they – like
how they are accustomed with monofilament
– measure the diameter of braided line or they
estimate according to feeling. Since a braided
line body, even with exact braiding and special
stretching, deforms when measuring with a
micrometer and a laser measurement is not
applicable due to the lines “non-rounded”
body as well, it does not really have a diameter to declare. Therefore, only a calculated
measurement is possible.
For this reason you should buy your braided line according to breaking strain and
not by a diameter specification that cannot be proven.

Highest breaking strain:
Since the breaking strain is considerably higher than that of a comparable diameter of a
monofilament, high-capacity trolling or biggame reels are not necessary for catching big
fish. Thanks to the lower line diameter, the
line capacity of a spinning reel is more than
enough. However, they should be matched to
the high requirements of braided line. They
should be spooling well-crossed layers.
Casing, gearing mechanism and spool body
should also correspond to each other. Even
the rod has to be able to withstand force
caused by a braided line.
Optimal suppleness:
Braided lines are missing the irritating
memory effect often found with monofilament fishing line. The line cleanly lies on the
reel and when casted, flows like silk from the
reel without crinkling – ideal conditions for
long, relaxing casts.
High knot
strength:
Not all fishing knots,
which work well
with monofilament
fishing line, are suitable for braided
lines.
Due to the softer
line body, many
knots loosen under
load. Even braided
lines can maintain up to 100% bearing force
with the ”Grinner”- double looped ”Clinch
knot” (swiveled 7 times) as well as the
Bimini-Twist-Knot.
Color quality:
In comparison to monofilament fishing lines,
with which the color can already be mixed in
the basic material, braided lines are dyed after
the braiding procedure.
Naturally, the color washes out after being used
for a while, which does
not prevent catching
fish successfully.
Longer life-time:
Thanks to the outstanding quality of the premium DYNEEMA®-Fibres with its abrasion
resistance, low moisture absorption, UV- and
chemical resistance, a “Braided” fishing line
has a much longer life-time than any monofilament which justifies the higher price a bit.

It is recommended to wash the line in fresh
water after long
exposure especially
to salt water. After
drying, you should
treat your braid with
our CLIMAX line
care agents. It
returns the original suppleness and floating
nature to the line without greasing; it seals
and lengthens the life-time of your line. .

Attention. Check the first 20 meters of line
for damage after longer use.
If single strands are broken, or roughness are
found on the line, cut these parts off and

After fishing season, store the line in a dry
place. The line will have a longer life-time, if it
is taken care of in this manner.
