Psalm -- Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways (Psalm 128) or Psalm 105. Second Reading -- Be thankful; do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:12-21 [12-17]) or Hebrews 11:8, 11-12, 17-19. Gospel -- The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom (Luke 2:22-40 [22, 39-40]). WE ARE GOD'S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of selfsurrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God's holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The mission of St. Gertrude Parish is to proclaim Jesus Christ as Savior: in Word, in Worship, in Service, and in Witness. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 28, 2014 From the Heart of Fr. Phil Weekend of December 28, 2014 Incarnation “…And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…” (Jn. 1:14) “…And He is called Emmanuel, which means: us…” (Mt. 1:23) God-with- What is the meaning of Christmas? What is the Mystery that we behold when, like the Three Wise Men, we come before Him and “fall on our knees” to adore Him”? It is the Mystery of the Incarnation: the miracle of God-becomehuman. In Jesus we behold the Face of God. And what do we see when we look upon the Face of God? We see the Face of Mercy. We see the Face of Divine Mercy. “God became man,” the early church fathers said, “so that men and women could become God.” God’s Passion is to be at-onewith the creatures - you and me - He made for Himself. Around the year 190 a.d., St. Irenaeus made this amazing statement: “Since the One who saves [Jesus, the Eternal Word] already existed [from all eternity in the Trinity], it was necessary that those who would be saved should come into existence, that the One [who saves] should not exist in vain.” In other words, you and I were created so we could receive the Gift of Christmas. We were created so we could hold God in our hands; so we could take into our bodies and souls, the very Body and Blood of the God who saves. Jesus in the Mystery of the Eucharist is the very same flesh-and-blood infant Mary wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger. He came to her so she would give Him to us. Christmas means that God desires to enter into the closest intimacy with those He made for Himself. He has chosen, called, and predestined us since before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4; Jn. 17:24) that we should be made worthy to receive Him. Do you believe? Come, then, let us adore Him!! e.g., St. Athanasius, On the Incarnation #54 Against the Heretics, Book III, ch. 22, v. 3 Mass Times Saturday: 4:30 pm Sunday: 8:00 am and 10:30 am Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday’s: 8:00 am Tuesday’s: 7:00 pm Monday: Eucharistic Exposition Begins 8:30 am, and Evening Prayer w/Benediction 7:00 pm Confession Times Saturday’s: 3:45 pm-4:15 pm, Sunday’s: 7:30 am-7:45 am Tuesday’s: 6:15 pm-6:45 pm. Recommended Holiday Viewing – Take a moment to sit back, put up your feet, and enjoy The Forsaken on Tuesday, December 30 on EWTN at 5:30 pm. This thirty minute documentary, featuring the Archdiocese of St. Louis mission program Pan y Amor, will open your eyes to the lives of children who have been rescued from living on the streets of Cochabamba and La Paz, Bolivia. Prior to being rescued, these children barely survived and often went to sleep hungry and on the streets. Emmy award winner Chuck Neff does an extraordinary job of capturing the struggles of these innocent children and their quest for a brighter future. This is a show you don’t want to miss!! Meeting Minutes We are going to try to include Meeting Minutes from all our committees here at St. Gertrude in the bulletin. They will be a shortened version so all will know what our committees are working on and discussing in their meetings. If you are a committee head please send your Meeting minutes to Tina Seals at [email protected]. Thank You! FINANCE & ADMISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES - SEPTEMBER 23, 2014 In attendance: Jennifer Hill (Shared Accounting) Vern Spaunhorst, Brad Nelson, Vicky Maune There was discussion on the clarity of the Weekly Contribution Report in the Bulletin. The committee decided the Electronic Collections should be included. We explored how we can reach out to the non-giving members of our Parish. This process would possibly bring back some members, update our files, and reduce our expenses of sending Parish Information and Envelopes to people that are no longer members of our Parish. Brad reported that we received a check for $5,000.00 from the State of Missouri for the Driveway Project. We are told there is still $2,000.00 that we should get refunded for also. Jennifer went over the monthly Financial Reports with the committee. And also reported that the Smart Tuition seems to working really well. Brad brought to the committee’s attention that we gained 3 students in our School!!! December 28, 2014 School News Dear St. Gertrude Parishioners, As we prepare to close the 2014 calendar year, I can’t help but reflect on all of the things that have given me pride in our school in my first 4 ½ months at St. Gertrude. • We have shown school pride in our attendance at the Washington Town and Country, Borgia Homecoming, and Holiday Lights Parades, winning 3rd place in the Town and Country Parade. In each we had a very large group of students walk with us. • We have just about completed our School Improvement Plan, which will guide the direction of our school over the next 5 years. • We have built a new sacred space within our school, the St. John Paul II Chapel, that will be accessible to our students all day long. These are just a few of the accomplishments that give me so much pride as principal of St. Gertrude School. I can honestly say that I cannot imagine myself being any happier at any other school. This is a school and a parish that really show how to put the “unity” into the community. I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I look forward to 2015 and all of the wonderful surprises that are in store for our school and parish. WE ARE SGS!!! God bless! Mr. Michael Etter Principal Since we now have a priest living at both St. Gertrude and St. Ann we will not cancel mass during inclimate weather this winter. Mass will be celebrated every day.
