THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with
water. Landscapers say that this "knits" the sod to the soil.
The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice
that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times.
Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into
the Jordan for baptism, he "knit" himself to what had come
before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one
with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into
the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of
God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary's
womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues
to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through
these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the
promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us,
as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate
our mission to proclaim the Good News.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive!, an Archdiocesan initiative inspirited
by Matthew Kelly’s The four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic to
cultivate prayer, study, generosity, and evangelization, has
begun! In 2015, there will be a special emphasis on prayer, a
broad term that pertains to the entirety of the spiritual life
(prayer, mass, sacraments, holiness, etc). Dynamic Catholics
have a daily commitment to prayer and vibrant spiritual lives.

just a ceremony of ritual, it is a sacrament; a sacrament brings
us into living relationship with god. The Lord himself dwells

The Country Store is open during the Sausage Dinner on

We are looking for many items for our guests such as homebaked breads, pies, cakes, cookies, home-made jellies and
preserves. Also fresh eggs, aprons, dish towels, pot holders,
dish cloths and assorted crafts are of interest.
Our guests at our last Chicken Dinner were very disappointed
that we did not have a large selection of the baked
goods. Please do not let our guests down!

HOUSE on Sunday, January 25th from 9AM-1PM. This will give anyone an opportunity to see what St. Gertrude School has to offer. I

Your schools will have access to the application begin- ning Sunday,
January 25.
Alive in Christ scholarships
provide financial assistance to families who would like their children to
attend a Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Scholarship award amounts are based upon financial need and will be
awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
This program is open to families with new students entering Kindergarten through 4th grade or Catholic families with students currently attending an Archdiocesan elementary school. Applications will be available at your school office or online at www.archstl.org/ttef beginning

scholarships began, the program has awarded 2,314 families across
the Archdiocese of St. Louis with a life changing scholarship.

Free Throw Competition The Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual "Free Throw Competition" on
Sunday, January 11th at 5:00 pm at the St. Gertrude Parish Center.
This competition is open to all girls, and boys ages 9 - 14. The local

Holy Land Trip Fr. Phil has been invited to be the Chaplain on a trip
to the Holy Land and Italy on April 13-26, 2015. This trip will
take you to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee, Capernaum, Rome,
