Farewell from Lavonna

The Ukiah Senior Center has been such a wonderful place to work, make a difference
and the place I have called home for the last twelve years. But, with all good things
there comes a time when a change is in order. I had intended to work at the Center until
retirement but an exciting opportunity was placed before me. I will be taking a position
at the Mendocino Community Health Clinic. This is a positive career move for me and
will allow me to focus on the next chapter in my life.
It’s with sadness that I leave such a wonderful group of people. The staff, board,
volunteers and I have worked together over the years to make many changes to
improve the Center. I’m amazed and so proud of what we have accomplished. I believe
in the Ukiah Senior Center and all the valuable services provided. I will continue to be a
supporter of the Center and contribute in whatever fashion I am able to do so.
I will still be doing the Thanksgiving Dinner which has been serving the community for
ten years! If you would like to help with this tradition, please give me a call at 462-4343.
The Board of Directors will be accepting applications for the Executive Director position.

Eula McElrath is from Arkansas and I could listen to her talk for hours. When she arrived in

The first time I met her, she said, “Hi, Hon!” and our friendship grew from there. Over the
months as I’ve gotten to know her, she shared with me, in her down-home Southern drawl,
that she is one of twelve children who began life on a farm in Arkansas ninety years ago. She
grew up working long days with her sisters and brothers on the farm. She tells of a hurricane
that once devastated her farm – and how all the neighbors in the area came to help her
family rebuild. That’s what neighbors did back then.

In the fifties, after hearing that jobs were available in Northern California, Eula, her husband,
and daughter drove out here to start a new life.
Eula’s husband found work in Redwood Valley and it wasn’t long before they bought a mobile
home and settled in near The Forks. There was a small yard and Eula immediately set to work
planting a lawn, fruit trees, flowers and, most importantly, a redwood seedling someone had
given her. Fifty years later that tree is more than thirty feet tall and marks Eula’s property.
She proudly directs you to her home telling you to look for that redwood. You can’t miss it!
During one of our conversations, Eula told me she had a problem with the roof; a small area
needed patching. So we began working on an application with North Coast Energy Services,
hoping they would fix her roof and winterize her mobile home. After we turned in all the
paperwork (and the proper attachments), they informed me that they don’t do roofs. Go
figure! They told me to “have Ms. McElrath do the roof and we’ll winterize her mobile.”
I broke the news to Eula and for the first time I saw something other than her positive self.
But as Eula does when things don’t work out, she accepts it with a positive attitude and
moves on. With her daughter’s help, the roof got fixed and I called North Coast.
North Coast called back and scheduled a time for someone come out. On the appointed date,
I went to Eula’s and we met a fellow named Patrick. Patrick began looking around, measuring
windows and doors and checking the refrigerator, stove and heater. When he was finished,
he told Eula that NC was going to help her with some new windows, doors, a new exhaust fan

and a new refrigerator. As soon as Patrick left, Eula and I grinned at each other. We stood up

Then a week or two goes by and I realize I haven’t heard from Eula. I decide to call and see

Talk about Death and Dying
over Tea and Cake
The Death Cafe is a movement that began in Europe
and has spread across the globe. It offers a safe and
confidential space for talking about death, a subject
that many find awkward or uncomfortable.
It is freely offered and donations are requested only to
cover expenses. The Death Cafe is open to all and isn’t
based on any particular belief system or philosophy. For

Gathered in small groups around comfortable tables,
natural, spontaneous and lively conversations can
emerge with minimal direction from the hosts and
facilitators. Snack foods, tea and cake will be served,
helping all who come to relax and feel at home.

Care. The film demonstrates helpful strategies for minimizing
fear and resistance to help with areas of personal care,
including bathing.
There will be a discussion on understanding the root causes
of resistant behaviors, anticipating and minimizing predictable
triggers for fear and resistance, and setting realistic
expectations for both the care receiver and the caregiver.
